    My Greenstalk is arriving Thursday. North East England

    I made a pepper tower this year, filling 26 of 30 pockets with 5 varieties, Hungarian Yellow Wax, Corona di Toro, Jimmy Nardello, Leysa, and Lipstick. The remaining four pockets were planted with dwarf zinnias. The productivity in the GreenStalk was better than the peppers planted in a raised bed. Some of the plants have grown tall, nearly five feet tall. Support for the plants is necessary, so I am using 3 ft bamboo plant stakes, and jute. My biggest problem is I need to use a step ladder to harvest from the top tier. I have already purchased a second tower for next year's Twin Towers of Pepper. My third GreenStalk is planted with Seascape Strawberries. My garden includes 8 raised beds, a 10x12 foot polytunnel greenhouse, 34 grow bags, an 8 ft long cattle panel tunnel, and a half dozen assorted pots for herbs-I can't let my mint take over my yard.

    It is so very generous of you to send Eli and Kate such a fabulous gift of a GreenStalk! I love the collaborations you do with Eli. Yes the first year is a challenge. Here where I live our irrigation water is on a separate system and it will be shut off on October 4th. So watering after that will involve lots of feet of garden hose.

    I also used the sticker technique to remember when I'd turned it last, lol. I considered doing 3 stickers for like S, T, Th and just turn it the night before one of those days.
    I had a ton of trouble with fungus gnats, but regularly feeding with mosquito bits helped. Amazingly, no real issue with slugs. Watering was troublesome because of the PNW weather because the top was getting more moisture than the mid and bottom tiers. I had to kinda focus in and give those tiers direct watering.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate Рік тому +4

      I think the watering will be something I’ll have to learn slowly.
      Especially remembering the size of the plants and roots

      @@eliandkatei think they would make great planters for herbs and miniature plants. I noticed Renee’s Garden seeds here sell mini vegetables especially lettuce. Yeah, the watering thing could be an issue unless it is under an umbrella as long as it doesn’t block the light. I’ve heard some have problems with tipping over. I think they are perfect for balconies and kitchen herb gardens. Maybe you will have to get a small umbrella for the top😂

    I am UK and we now have a UK distributor - Rooted in Bolton. .. Takes a while and rather expensive (we don't have the sales etc). Paying around £200 for the leaf/original combo with moving base and wheels. I have 2 so far. 2nd one I got from the Swedish distributor Eli and Kate used. I have not set them up yet. Was going to wait until spring but I do have around 30 strawberry plants that need somewhere to live over winter, so I might set mine up this afternoon. Great watch. Thank you for sharing

    I could listen to Eli talk all day long. What a generous, beautiful thing your gift was! I have loads of space for planter boxes, orchard space, etc that I probably won't spend the extra $$ anytime soon on a Greenstalk, but if I ever did want to do something like plant the little Alpine strawberries or something else so delicate that it might not survive in a box, that would certainly be an option.

    Eli, I definitely have problems with slugs and snails in my greenstalks. and I definitely find them in my tower when I move or disassemble it. I've tried using Sluggo but I'm not sure what else to do.

    Not sure Eli was a Greenstalk pioneer in Europe last year. There's a company in Sweden officially representing and distributing Greenstalk in Europe and I believe they've been in business last year already. I ordered mine this year April to Poland and they were already able to tell me exactly how long the shipment wil be underway. But I love her experience and would love to hear more!

    Pro tip - rotating the green stalks is typically a main attribute to growing in them. With the auto watering system, all the hose clips placed on one side of the planter isn’t needed to keep the vertical water line in place, so use one every other pot (or tier) and take the others and put them on the opposite side of the planter (or buy extra clips and place them on opposite sides of each other on the planter). When time to rotate the planter, simply remove the vertical hose from the clips, spin planter around to other side, clip water line back in on the opposite side. Bam, back in business.

      The very first thing I did was add copper tape to the spinner base. It won't stop them, but it deters them if you use tape with a high percentage of copper and make it as thick as you can.
      So far too good.... not had a single slug yet, but I know I have to stay vigilant

    I bought 2 GreenStalks last year. Filled them with Mel's mix and nothing but strawberries. The strawberries did great... except they didn't survive the winter. The strawberries in my raised bed did. So how do I keep my strawberries alive through the winter in a Green Stalk?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  8 місяців тому +1

      Moving them into a protected area can help. A warm garage, a basement, an insulated shed. If they freeze and dry out they won't make it through winter.
