  • Replacement of the shift cable on a Manual Transmission 1997 Second Generation Saturn SW2 Station Wagon. SW2 is basically the same as the SL2. I researched this and pulled all the info together in one place plus the techniques I learned and used as I did the replacement. It took about 5+ hours (including video and picture taking).

    Mine came looks at work. Fortunately it was in second gear. I drove the 10 miles home in second gear, up a long hill in the process. It was a little dangerous to be going 25 mph in a 75 mph 4 lane highway, but after a couple close calls made it home. Now to get cable replaced!

      You're welcome and just so you don't think I'm some kind of mad genius I never knew either until I was doing the install then saw the part that it moved and then wondered what if I move that with my hand what would happen and that's how I discovered it and realized it would help so much in the event of a broken cable.

    I have an automatic I'm working on. Your title didn't say "manual shift" or Stickshift so I watched assuming it was an automatic. I watched anyway and it was informative. Thank you.

      I'm sorry about that and I will try to add that in the description when I said shifter cable I thought that means manual but now I just thought about it and realized well it could be manual or automatic how is your project coming? I've heard the automatics on the Saturn for some reason are very expensive to rebuild

      @@pcofranc I am up and running and the whole issue was the clip holding in the lower shift cable on the motor side. Not the one on the end but the "C" type clip that you mentioned. I am afraid I had to use bailing wire to hold it in place as no clips are available here but it is working fine. A little history on my car... I bought my 1999 SC2 DOHC here in Mexico. It was a donation car from San Francisco and imported into Mexico. I bought it off my Mexican doctor friend down the street. I have literally brought this car back from the dead. I had it repainted, rebuilt the engine, did the brakes, had seats cushioned and reupholstered, new heater core I ordered on eBay that arrived bent like an accordion due to bad packaging. Got my money back and after straightening the thing out I installed it and it is still working fine. Got the A/C up and running and had the radiator rodded out and went through the entire suspension with new struts and all sorts of sway bar bushings etc. Replaced the front crankshaft seal because it was leaking and that caused the harmonic balancer to fail which I just replaced as well. It would make no sense to do this if I were in the US or Canada because of the labour costs. You said you paid $600 to have the cable replaced? In Mexico the cable is available at AutoZone here for about$65 U.S. The shop would probably charge around $30 U.S. total for labour to replace it. For example: to replace the harmonic balancer, front crankshaft seal, install a new water pump and replace two hard to get at hoses the shop charged me $2600 pesos and I got to drink a few Coronas while I watched them work in the shop. The price of the harmonic balancer was included in that price and all other parts I procured. That is $130 U.S. total. Subtract the cost of the harmonic balancer and labour is probably total around $80. I like this car and am going to hang onto it for a long time. American built, Canadian driven, kept alive by Mexican mechanics and beaten to death on Mexican roads. A real NAFTA warrior.

      @@fkarau Frank that is the greatest reply to any video I have ever had and just knowing that it was helpful in the way it was in all the things you've done to that car made it worse having my cable brake and the time and effort to make the video I'm so glad you got some shoes out of it and thank you so much for taking the time to write and supply all of that detail that's wild you know I live in San Diego so I'm not too far from the Tijuana border about a 20-minute Drive and it's amazing that the labor is so low band it's a shame to let a car go that can just keep going why send a bunch of working parts to the junkyard doesn't make any sense my car is still running fine although I am behind on a few small things I am at a hundred and seventy Thousand Miles I only put about $3,000 because I enjoy riding my motorcycle as much as possible. If you have a chance send me a link to a friend request for Facebook or something like that my Yahoo email I don't check it soften but I will keep an eye out for a message from you it is p c o f r a n c@yahoo.com and of course no spaces between those letters I'm blown away at how inexpensive labor is and totally that makes it worthwhile to get cars repaired there's so many cars in San Diego that could be run over the Border and just need seals replace to get rid of issues leaking a friend of mine picked up a 1998 Lincoln Mark 8 ones like a top passed emissions but has some leaking issues on the bottom and could use some reseals he paid only 1,200 at the auction

    The car is 2001 Saturn SL2 w/automatic transmission. I wanted to remove the Steering Column on that car, but confused on one black cable in the plastic box, which is attached to the bottom of the Ignition Lock Cylinder Housing w/some tabs and zip-tie (probably some tabs were broken, so someone attached w/zip-tie, bcs I saw another film and there were just tabs there). I'm afraid to remove that box w/cable going out of it, since think that it may mess up the lock (the box w/cable is sitting just under the Lock Cylinder). On another side that cable is attached under the Shifting handle in the same way how it is shown in this film. I couldn't find any similar Lock Ignition systems in films, besides the one mentioned above where the author just released that box slightly w/words: I don't know what will happen if to remove that box completely. I would appreciate any explanations on that box w/cable and its role. Thank you for so detailed film.

      @@pcofranc Thank you very much for the quick replay. The film (and it is the only one I found on YT) where that object (I mean black box w/cable coming out of it and going to the area of console and ends w/white bushing) can be seen is:
      ua-cam.com/video/4XJscUVv_q8/v-deo.html
      It starts fm ~1:27 (the author also concerns about total removal of the box), then it can be seen at @2:05 and @3:15 again. Thank you again for the attention to my question.
      Update: I have Shop Manual for that car and found fm one description there that the black box might be roll connector (I don't know what it does exactly). They say:
      On 2001 model remove roll connector by carefully disengaging plastic retainer tabs w/small flat ...
      All that is in Steering Wheel location. In another place they say:
      On vehicles w/automatic transaxles, connect park lock cable to ignition module (shown housing for the ignition lock cylinder).

    It's a long shot. But is there a certain way to remove the rubber piece where the shifter cables go from the engine compartment to the inside of the car? Close to the fire wall. I've been trying to use two screw drivers to pry it off but no luck

      There's a little plastic bracket in the middle of that rubber piece that the cables are setting in. Not sure if that's part of my problem

      @@jaydubya9135 It's been a few years since I work on this thing but what I do remember is when I when I was putting that rubber piece in peace in I had difficulty and and I think I ended it up up slicing it with a razor the razor and inserting it that way so you can probably do the same thing at the end of the day what is needed is the cables must have the ability to slip through that But as far as sealing you could probably use some polyurethane foam and grease the cables 1st and once the phone sets completely it would effectively do the same Though it would not be as strong obviously it's just there to keep out cold air in the Winter and maybe some fumes it is but the car is old old and on borrowed time anyway

    I also have problems with the shift cable grommet popping off the cable when in going reverse and I'm middle of traffic I can't shift,it's screwed people yelling I have to Rupp the console out and put linkage back in grommet.dammit and also the shifting is hard to go in grsrs like its cables are rusty inside or old cable like on bicycle cables.I was going to put lube into cable jacket.

    • @pcofranc
      @pcofranc  6 років тому +1

      Seven Potter the Lube on the cable shouldn't wear out as it's pretty much sealed my first suspicion would be that the synchros are wearing out on the transmission and that's what's making it difficult to go into gear and of course even when the transmission was new these cars never shifted very smoothly. A good test when the car is off if you move back and forth left and right in neutral but don't go into any of the gears that moves the cable if it moves easily than the cable probably doesn't need lubrication.

    so now i have to ask why my main shifter cable is "stuck" in a horizontal position when I see everyone elses ring is vertical? I can twist it far enough to clip it in but I expect the ring should not offer torque because that can't be good for bushing?

    • @pcofranc
      @pcofranc  7 років тому +1

      Chris Loewl if I understand your question it sounds like you're replacing the cable and one of the ends is laying horizontally when it should be vertical if that's the case rotate the cable to the correct position you can play around with it to get it so that it's not twisted up but it can actually be rotated to any position and then install that way.
