  • hey in this video I talk about my 2017 Dodge Challenger and driving it in the snow. I wanted to show you guys that you can drive a Dodge Challenger a rear wheel drive sports car in the snow just like any mustang GT in the snow or Camaro SS in the snow. I have been driving rear wheel drive vehicles in the snow and winter for the past couple of years and it is possible to have a rear wheel drive vehicle as a daily driver in the snow and ice. driving a rear wheel drive sports car in the snow is okay to do as long as you have snow tires and you have the proper weight distribution over the rear axle / wheels. in this video I hope to shed some light on driving a rear wheel drive sports car in the snow and ice and hopefully this video can help you guys out if you're looking to drive a Dodge Challenger RT or Dodge Challenger scat pack in the snow.

I totally agree wit everything said...I currently have a rt and an old head said yea jus put some snow tires on that thing and put some sand bags in the truck and you a be ok...my only hang up with driving the challenger in the winter is that the challenger doesn't have window frames so my window gets frozen to the seal and I can't open the door from time to time but actual driving...this guy is spot on

Good content! Don't forget to undercoat every year, some are 2 or 5 year recoat depending on the product. Absolutely, snow tires are critical in a muscle car in winter driving, or good quality ASRs. My RT Shaker survived for years, and my Scat has done great for 2 years now. There's been no rust, no issues, just drive in ECO Mode....lol

This is exactly what I needed to see. I plan on getting a 2019 Challenger R/T and driving it in the winter. These are the exact conditions I'd be driving in and the areas I'd be in too. I live about 60 miles west of you. Thank you so much for this.

    • @kingmb

acerswift123 r/t by far. GT uses the Pentastar V6. R/T is a V8. I've been driving in the snow for 20+ years. My current route is basically a straight line from home to work. If I really need to go somewhere I'll use wife's AWD vehicle with snow tires.

So I’m trading my 2010 Mazda for the 2017 challenger rt, and just wanted to know if i could be safe with it. My choice is between the rt and the awd, but people keep saying the v6 is underpowered and loses value extremely fast.

Like many others I grew up with RWD cars in New England and they work fine in the snow with the right tires and as you mentioned weight over the rear tires always helps. Drove a 1983 Corvette that I purchased in 86 and with the exception of low clearance I drove it all winter long and it was fine. You just need to understand the car and yourself and not let your ego get the best of you

As an 80's teen in the STL area, my first vehicle was a rusted out RWD only pickup truck, then a 1980 Pontiac Sunfire (rwd), then a 1978 Pontiac Grand LeMans (rwd), and then a rwd only1986 Chevy S10 pickup. None of those vehicles ever had snow tires either, so it definitely can be done. That being said, those were cheap beater cars and I was a stupid teenager. However, if I owned a nice Challenger today you'd bet your freshly shaven ball-sack I'd have snow tires for the winter. Now freezing rain is a whole other monster no matter what car/tire combo you have.

I drive my 08 Mercedes E63 rwd 507 hp all round. You need snow tires, about 300lbs of sand bags(70 sand tubes wrapped in plastic bag,you can get at Menards)jug of salt and a small shovel just in case.I have the air ride suspension so I raise it a few inches when it snows.Sometimes when spinning its better to have traction control off because you wont get enough power with it on.Drive very carefully and slower and be very aware of others.

  • @kenarnold7278

Thanks, OmegaGreed! Yesterday (in Chicago) we had our first snowfall since I purchased my 2017 Challenger (used). It snowed about 2-3 inches on the subdivision's road and I WAS going to go out...but all I did was take it for a spin around the block! Why! Because I realized it was the LEAST snow car I've ever owned in my 40+ years of driving!
I fishtailed, slide almost off the street, and couldn't even get back up my driveway hill! I purchased the car with 20 inch, "All Season" tires that perhaps have 50% left on the tread with the car having 17,000 miles on it.
My question to you (or another viewer) is: "Since on a budget, do you think purchasing dedicated snow tires for JUST THE REAR PAIR would be OK? Or do you definitely have to install ALL FOUR as snow tires. It's costs $25 a pop to mount tires...and the ones that are on there are still good...I just live in the wrong climate (here in Chicago). Until I fix that geography, would buying just a pair do 70% of the job? Or not...

I had 2 snow tires on the back for a while and some extra weight in the trunk and that helped out alot. When I went to all 4 snow tires the car handled a lot better overall and it was more predictable.

Am I the only who has their doors frozen shut? I can drive my challenger in the winter. My problem with this car in the winter is simply that it was not built for these conditions. The doors are near impossible to open, the windows freeze so I can’t properly close the door unless the windows are cleaned off properly. There is a trim on the outside of the door at the bottom of the window that started to come off last winter. Some day I would like to get a Jeep for these harsh NY winters.

The worse part is having posi track n to get out of them skids is reaching for 4wd or taking out of gear cause rear brakes wont grab the back tires on the first brake press also abs module taps into the brake system n can be annoying when you just need that tire spin to get through or otta something... i used to drive an old 81 monte carlo for over 7yrs in yooper winters had my tools in the trunk was enough weight and had some mean knobby tires on the back for winter time- hell we hit the wellston Michigan fire tower road when i lived down in manistee county- 2ft of snow i kept them tires turning that car just dug and plowed through it. Lol was fun- not 17 anymore so more serious about driving and have purpose when leaving the house when its nasty out now

Get a separate set of rims for your winter tires. Save your nice rims for the summer. Makes life much easier when it comes to changing for tires for the season, plus if you are using the same set of rims for both sets of tires, the rims will inevitably get damaged from changing the tires on them twice a year.

I have a 300s AWD and didn't have any problems in the Canadian winter (Toronto), even with All Seasons and no extra weight. I'm thinking of buying the Challenger R/T just because I dream about having a V8 but at the same time I question myself if this would be reasonable winter wise.
These videos helped me a bunch to understand that it can drive well if you have proper tires and some weight.
Before anyone comes to me roasting about my lack of winter experience, well, I'm from Brazil and this is my second year living here in Toronto. As you can imagine, Brazilian winters are not well known for the amount of snow we get... lmao
