Curt Hennig interview a week after Rick Rude's funeral *RARE*

- An understandably upset Curt Hennig shoots on people who didn't show their support for Rick Rude following his death. As you can tell by the reaction, Hennig didnt know he'd be asked about Rude's death during a supposed "worked" promo.
He started losing it, and then he regained his Control. He was holding in a lot of real emotion. Wrestlers are all human. Two legends, Curt and Rick.
They’re human? Nope, not buying it
@@Maxx_d13
I’m not buying that “we’re human” garbage either.
@@dumisatonyjohnson8145 Santa Claus isn’t real and I’ve accepted that however, when they tried to tell me wrestling was fake. I had to take a stand
Who? The interviewer?
I saw the pain in his eyes. And you could tell he was not prepared for this interview. But like his name he handled it PERFECTLY
There was one quick moment where he held back tears but your right his reaction was absolutely perfect
Well put duwaaun
@Chris A if he cried I would have been ok with it! When you lose a friend who is like a brother of course the tears should flow!
Completely agree. Then the interviewer began to bring up situation the eyes glared over. Tears sit on the waterline
“Mr Perfectly”
1:42 "I lost my best friend" what a deep grief he has. Rest in peace both of two legends.
i member seeing this that very monday night. Curt was really hurting that night.
I wish we would have seen a new Curt Hennig.
@@Machete87 too bad that did not air on Nitro, that clip was filmed exclusively for WCW online to drive traffic to their website.
Gonna guess that was one hell of an reunion.
Or at least that’s what I hope happened.
Curt Hennig and Rick Rude were friends all their lives, literally. They knew each other as little kids and were close.
Mr. Perfect still has me swatting my gum away when I spit it out 💪🏼
Julian Jay Now that’s.... perfect.
I kick it with my foot, too
Lol I do the swat and kick.
I do it too. It’s fucking hard. I miss most of the time.
Julian Jay rip mr perfect
Wow. That little pop at the end. He was genuinely hurt and caught off guard by this. That was so real. I hope the guy apologized to Curt afterwards.
Yeah I felt that was a real bit of irritation over being caught off guard being asked about RR.
The interviewer really put Hennig on the spot, catching him off guard like that. Hennig had to maintain character while also speaking to a very personal issue, I don't blame Hennig for skewering the guy there at the end.
Pretty sure he was told to, perfect knows it so he probably went off on the guys who relay the script to the interviewer...
Almost impossible to maintain a Heel character when in a work promo like that cause you have to come across sympathetic and sad which he obviously was
I think that was kayfabe
Curt's last line of the interview was totally appropriate
Off topic. Love ur ROTLD profile pic
I am with you. That was awkward, and you can see how off guard Curt was. I bet he couldn’t believe the guy followed up his Booker T promo interview that was all business and all character with a very serious and personal topic. What a shitty move that was.
Yeah that interviewer shouldve known better completely uncalled for curt actually handled it well given the circumstances. R.I.P Rick and Curt
Yeah he was not happy about it. He was a true professional and takes his job seriously. He was supposed to be in character as a heel
@@nick56677 "Do you wanna Par-TAY!!! It's par-ty time!!!"
1:41 you can see the pain in his eyes after he says he lost his best friend. Those few seconds of silence after that were heartbreaking but being the absolute pro that he was he stays in character and keeps his shit together. Man i miss Curt Hennig, what a phenomenal wrestler he was.
You can see the pain in his eyes around 0:39 too.
@@rtbarshaw3766 What are you some type of moron?
I miss him as well. I met him for a second as a kid and he was still in character lol. RIP Curt
@Snake I had a question..... I didn't watch wrestling during this time. I was big into the WWF in the 80s from the days of Bob Backlund to Hogan's reign. Now was Hennig staying in character while discussing Rude's death? Because I always assumed he broke character.... But I have read a few comments on here saying he stayed in character.
@@ppiorkowski1502 Well i wouldn't say he broke character, but he did answer it initially in a very personal way. You see the man come out for a few seconds after he says he lost his best friend but he quickly switches back before it becomes too real. A lot of people in that situation would understandably become emotional after making a personal statement like that but it's almost like a switch flipped off and then back on again where he was able to put it aside and focus on the show. To be fair, you can tell he was caught off guard by that question, how else was he supposed to answer it other than truthfully?
I usually call BS when a UA-cam vid has *RARE* in the title, but this one is legit. Great find!
Well, it was from NITRO so i don't know how rare that is lol
@@VolkXue it is rare because these kind of backstage interview segments were not apart of the original script of Nitro. They were only shown to DirecTV customers during the commercials so anybody who had other cable providers customers couldn't see these or were unaware of it.

@@VolkXue You had to pay to get access to this only on Directv so that makes it even more rare as they did backstage interviews during the commercials. I bought it regularly

yeah curt was visibly shaken by the thoughts of losing his best friend it really sucks we lost those guys they both were in a different league. rude was incredible b4 sting broke his back and mr perfect what can u say one in a lifetime
Guess it wasn’t the wake up call for him like he thought, it wasn’t for others either as Rick Rude’s death was one of first wrestler deaths in that incredibly destructive 10year span of 97-2007
Pillman- Benoit
It seemed like we were losing a guy every 2months or so.
It’s really slowed down the last few years. It seems like now when a wrestler dies they are at least I. The Piper, Dusty, Bruno, Nikolai Volkoff age bracket which is still relatively young for some of those guys. But man oh man for a while these guys were lucky to make it through their 30’s
I watched Curt & Bret have a non-televised *belt vs belt* match for 1 hour in my home town. From the intros, they BOTH realized that we *loved-them-both-equally.* I have NEVER seen these 2 work so hard(which says a lot). Every single move got a loud POP. Not one boo. After an hour it was a DRAW & we chanted "THANK YOU! THANK YOU! over & over. It was *pure magic for them & us.*
When was this? The only time I can remember them having belts simultaneously was in 1990 and 1991 when Curt was the I-C Champ and Bret was a World Tag Team Champ.
@@CatsClaw44 -Exactly.
@@CARTOONIVERSE1so how can it be called a belt vs belt match? Bret couldn't put his tag team title belt on the line in a singles match? Plus I don't even think they started wrestling against each other until Bret done with his tag team reign.
@@ppiorkowski1502 - Sorry, I confused it with another live match I saw between Piper & Flair. Piper was the Intercontinental champ & Flair was the WWF world champ. They were both eventually disqualified.
@@CARTOONIVERSE1WOW that's crazy!! Piper wasn't the IC champion for very long was he? I wasn't really watching wrestling at that point but he won it from The Mountie (probably spelled it wrong) right? Do you know how long his reign was?
Curt is one of the few wrestlers that seems to have been liked and respected by everyone, he was clearly a great guy.
Taker is another one
this is the first time I've seen Curt Legitimately pissed ..
Wouldn't u be if your bestie passed away?????
I wouldn't be surprised if this led to Curt's drug use. Although I understand why he would be hurt by his best friend's death, I would stay away from drugs and focus on his family.
kenterminatedbygoogle well You must understand I think Maybe Curt was more angry that People who Rude helped didn't go to His funeral .. He said that ..
Also the question pissed him off how does he feel about the death of his best friend like really why asked that

Rude's former managers (Heyman, Heenan or Percy Pringle)???
kenterminatedbygoogle curt was using booze and drugs long before this
It's such a damn shame that rude and perfect aren't here anymore. Great wrestlers. Both were some of the best. May they RIP because they are dearly missed.
@Tom cap
they rest in peace because they made some bad decisions, both of them died from drug related reasons, rude because he took too many, Perfect because he OD'd on cocaine

That end part where Hennig hit him with that rolled up newspaper looked real. I think he really was pissed.
Yes he was
It was real.
Absolutely trash move - he and Rude were childhood friends.
He was pissed for sure
I reckon the interviewer was forced to ask about Rick Rude against his will. Given how unprofessional WCW was in its final years and since it was tanking executives would have been desperate to make anything interesting and this interviewer was thrown in to take the heat.
I have no idea how he kept it together, AND deliver such a good promo. Perfect.
Wow. Never seen this before. This was pretty raw.
Quite understandable considering. You could see he was struggling to hold in his emotions. You can only go so far before they show themselves. Poor bloke was hurting.

That wake-up call would have saved his life four years later and we would not have lost another great entertainment wrestler.
"Let me tell you this next time you wanna do an interview with me, you come and ask me first" -Mr.Perfect
Hennig is still motivating me all the time, when I'm doing sports. I just think on his movement and I feel powerful again and again. Sometimes I try to copy him a little bit, but no one is able to understand. This is just for me! Thank you Curt for your time!!!
Hennig came out expecting to do a heel promo, and it's kind of hard to come off as a heel when you're mourning the loss of a friend. Hennig looked like he was trying to fight from crying, while trying to stay in character. I have no doubt he was legitimately pissed, he really had no other choice if he wanted to stay in heel mode.
You are spot on. When you're asked a question like that you have to come off like a babyface. You can't play the heel when asked about the tragic death of your best friend. You can hear Curt's voice choke up on that last line.
When I want to cry I do the same head movements he did when he was talking
Facts that’s why he said next time you want to do an interview ask me first
Kinda BULLSHIT that they put him on the spot like that...especially since he is supposed to be a heel ffs it would make it a bit different if he was playing a good guy at the time
2hat does h3el and baby face jargon mean? 🤷♂️
Curt had his demons as we all do, but this man was pure heart. You can see the emotion in his eyes, and hear it in his voice. I wish he could have overcome that which plagued him, and that we still had him today. R.I.P Curt Henning and Rick Roode.

I can never get over the weirdness I feel when I'm watching a video of someone who has passed away. It's strange and it's hard to put into words how I feel. It makes you think about your own mortality, when you see guys like this have died you know it's coming for you too. We all know are going to die but we still have that little hope we won't deep down. Maybe we need that or we would go insane.
That's why they call believing in Jesus as "the blessed hope" because without it we would all go insane thinking about it

A very awkwardly arranged interview. First the reporter brings up a wrestling angle, which Curt takes a few moments to really get into character. Then the reporter brings up the recent death of Curt's friend, and Curt clearly is upset and caught off-guard. Curt struggles to respond, and eventually gets back to the wrestling angle. Then at the end he gets personal again when he tells the reporter to be more professional while slapping him with a newspaper. I've never really seen a wrestling interview like that before or since. Usually the guys doing the interviewing are liked by the wrestlers and know better than to really piss off the talent

I agree with what you said. Maybe the interviewer was doing what he was told, or his inquiring mind wanted to know how Curt felt. 1 of those incidents where its ok to tell the person that they can say no comment if they don't wanna talk about it.
At least they got to team up at both Survivor Series 1988 & 1989 together. That wasn't coincidence.
And they worked together at the 1990 Royal Rumble.
Dang I could feel his pain when he said "I lost my best friend"
That was an ambush question if I've ever heard one. He handled it well, he was great for sure.
When Kurt told him to ask him first, and then politely wacked him with the rolled up paper, he was frustrated and angry at the same time. He knew the guy wasn't trying to stir the pot, but he also could have easily decked him and kept walking.
Bad timing, is bad timing, no way about it. The business eats people and spits them out. Curt was mad about Rick Rude being spit out and not getting the respect of those he made money for attending his funeral. He has a legit gripe, and then the interviewer basically ambushed him with the worst possible question at that time he could ask. Hell if he would have waited a year or so later, it wouldn't have been so bad.
A time and place for everything. But early deaths from drug usage are not a part of that saying. Curt and Rick paid with their lives over giving themselves to the business. I hope they rest well on the other side.
@40 Phil P I started watching Rick in WCCW when he and Chris Adams had a feud. It was gold, and Rude could do nothing wrong.
The man tapped up his wedding ring on his finger during matches, as he was devoted to his wife eternally. Rude should have beaten warrior in 1990 at Summerslam for the strap. Dude was scorching hot as a heel. Curt Hennig was the only other man that could give even Rick Rood a run for his money. The wrestling world lost some amazing teachers for the new kids, and the world lost two damn good men.
@40 Phil P Aye, he was another one who gave himself to the business fully. Tom Billington I consider to be in the top three of the best pure in ring performers of all time. He had such a quick explosive nature in the ring on everything he did. Fact is, he did more damage to himself than his opponents, as evidenced in his later years. From what little family life we knew of Dynamite, he loved his wife and kids too. Add Big Bossman to that list as well. Dude was a big man who could move and was a big old country boy at heart. We sometimes forget that damage is cumulative, but it's true, it all adds up. And once it's time to punch your ticket out of this life, some will unfortunately, have to clock out much sooner due to a lifetime of damage they've sustained.
Sorry for the mini essay though, real good typing up wonderful responses with you. Be blessed in all you do.
It’s Curt you numbskull and also your buying too much into this interview kiddo...

Yeah, you could tell Hennig was visibly pissed off with that interview, no acting needed there...
When people don't ask for an interview first, they're proven to not be credible. When it is about a friend who passed away, you really should be respectful and ask first. All wrestlers, weather good or bad, liked or hated, gave us all memories that lasts a lifetime. I'm glad to have seen Mr Perfect Curt Hennig's reaction, which you could see real emotion, and you could tell would have rather kept his thoughts private. However, he was a true professional and answered the question on camera, and made a valid point about people who don't know how to be a real journalist.

That last line may have come from the heart - I don't think he expected the Rude line of conversation.
He didn't and it was uncalled for. You could see Curt having to turn to fight back the tears. It wasn't the time or the place and you certainly ask first off camera if that's going to be your question.
I wish Curt would have slapped the mic out of his hand.
I think you're right, and i think hitting him with that rolled up paper stopped him from hitting that guy.
Yeah, you could clearly see he was really pissed when the topic was brought up. It's not something you ask last as an afterthought and catch someone off guard looking for a reaction. It probably didn't make Curt happy right off the bat that the interviewer was mispronouncing HENNIG as HENNING, and immediately Curt enunciates his full name to get it right.... AND THEN came the indelicate question. Curt was really a pro. I'd be interested to hear what the interviewer's side of the story was, like if he had been instructed by the producers to ask that question and if he ever apologized to Curt.
Man you can tell he was hurting. But like the true professional he was, he carried on with the promo. RIP both guys.
Two of my fav wrestlers of all time. Rest up to both Mr Perfect and Ravishing Rick. What really sucks is Rude was planning to return to the ring.
rick rude was taking a lot of pain pills from the back injury Sting caused...contributed to his cause of DEATH...LOVED BOTH OF THEM....SAW THE END OF THE MATCH WHERE RUDE HIT THE EDGE OF A LEDGE THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE...
That was amazing. So raw and unbridled. Ravishing Rick Rude and Mr. Perfect are two of the best heels ever.
WOW!! It's the 1st time ever I've seen Curt 'Mr. Perfect' Hennig emotional. I completely understand he's still reeling from his long time friend 'Ravishing' Rick Rude's recent passing. It must've been awful for him.
Notice that we've never seen the interviewer again.
i just saw him in another clip
Oh...
Hall went at him pretty good in this interview
