I lived next door to Nikita in Charlotte in the Beacon Hill Apartments....Right down the road from Crockett productions. My wife and his wife were both smokers, so they smoked outside together and actually became friends before her passing. Also, I only saw him break character once, when his corvette was stuck in the snow, and I helped him push it out...RIP Mandy...

He went to college at Golden Valley Ramsey community college .......Minneapolis Minnesota 1978 . Got his start with Eddy Sharkey on Lyndale avenue in South Minneapolis . Same gym where Hulk Hogan started along with numerous AWA stars
Robbinsdale, Minnesota High School in the late 70s--so many professional wrestlers. Nikita, Khruscher Khruschev (Barry Darsow), Rick Rude, Tom Zenk, Curt Hennig, several others.
Minnesota had legit badasses.
It still amazes me how much of these guys knew knew each other from their teen years.
It's such a shame to have lost Hennig & Rude so young. I have no doubt they would still be on-screen personalities of some sort to this day were they still around. Perfect was a great commentator, and Rude was already proving himself to be a great manager.
I loved that era of wrestling even better than the Attitude Era. When Hogan was doing movies, and only around part time, all the sudden it seemed like anyone could shatter the glass ceiling with the likes of Savage, Warrior, Slaughter, Flair, and Hitman all winning the title. The midcard was just about the best midcard that ever existed with Jake the Snake, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Hitman, Perfect, Rude, Undertaker, British Bulldog, Owen just got pushed up to midcard as did Shawn Michaels, and Razor Ramon and Diesel debuted, and evil Doink Matt Borne was in the crowds making children cry. The tag division was great with the likes of Legion of Doom, Money Inc., Nasty Boys, Natural Disasters, Bushwhackers and right at the start of that era you saw Demolition, Hart Foundation, The Rockers, and British Bulldogs competing then breaking up.
Rock and Austin were great, but Rock was just a knockoff of Savage's early career as intercontinental champion, and Austin alone doesn't make up for the supporting cast of guys like Hennig, Rude, Roberts, & Piper.
He learned to speak flawless English !!!
LMAO! It is SO insane hearing this mans real voice, after watching him as a kid. He kinda just groaned back then, and I remember only understanding two out of ten words he said. I know it was a character, but he sounds so well spoken and intelligent.

He was tough no doubt but not on the same level as Don Frye...people never mention him when talking about tough wrestlers...his moustache would ko Rick Rudes 7 days a week
You know there is always someone out there who can beat someone, but in the business while Rick Rude was wrestling, no one went out of their way to fuck with him. From early on everyone who was anyone in wrestling knew Rick was one bad ass mother F'er and you made sure you didn't piss him off. There were a few others who were real to life bad asses, Paul Ordoff, Dick Murdock, even Harley Race, there was a pecking order and everyone knew back then who was who, as well as who you DID NOT mess with.
Yea but I say Dr. D. David Shultz would have mopped the floor with Rick Rude. Shultz was even badder.

Rude, Hennig, Darsow, Simpson (Nikita) and Heggistrand (Hawk) were all part of that Robbinsdale group. They were pretty much to Minnesota what the guys in West Texas were.
Same school as Ric Flair in Robbinsdale too . Ofcourse Rick was a lot older but none the less the same school
it is always so weird to me when i think about that, i try to picture all the people i went to high school with and cannot imagine any of them growing up to be huge muscular pro wrestlers. and i grew up in Oklahoma and had a few cornfed farm boys around.

My favorite Rick Rude moment was when he was WCW USA Champion
Bill Moody said something along the lines of Rick intentionally starting fights in bars and beating guys up (as in, antisocial behavior - doing stuff like standing back from his wife(?) or girlfriend and setting a trap of sorts). And when he mentioned it, it sounded like it bothered him.
If his dad beat him up, that might explain some of the reason he did things like that.
Never hear stories about Meng starting fights with guys for no reason. Nor Harley.

I heard that about Rude also. He set traps to beat the shit out of people. I don’t have problem with tough guys, but I don’t like hearing that he did crap like that to ordinary people. I have no respect for that.
BINGO, there are multiple wrestlers who have said that about Rick Rude, those stories are true.
Rick Rude great heel and he had the best neckbreaker ever the rude awakening.
That he did. One of the things I loved about it, aside from the perfect vertical landing, was his setup. He really took his time to lay out the manuver (a great heat builder I'd imagine for the audiences), and masterfully did the drop.

That would've been a great turn. Honestly, I think that the move to WCW really benefitted him. His character really developed more, as like Bobby Heenan (R.I.P.) and the like have mentioned that he vehemently wanted to work on his own. He had great archrivals in Sting and Ricky Steamboat, to name a few --- which he brought out the best as a more fleshed out, less glamorous heel (getting his locks cut before his move really gave him a "hard man" look, in football terms). The beefs (with Sting especially) were much more drawn out in terms of story, so the heat had more sizzle in my opinion. He spoke quite well for himself, and gave his promos with the classic arrogant aura, with a touch more intensity and mania (the promo he did on Vader was a recent discovery from another UA-cam comment thread, and evidently was going to lead to a face turn for rude, prior to his unfortunate back injury in Japan if I recall correctly). The U.S. title run was yet another highlight for him, along with of course, the World Title. It would've been interesting to see him return in his later years, but his pitchman work for DX and the NWO showed that he hadn't lost his knack for the mic work. Forgive my longwindedness here, by the way.

I'm not doubting Rick Rude's toughness. However, telling a story about how he beat up a cake eater doesn't really prove it. While it is true that Edina routinely made it into the state championships, the cake eaters regularly got their asses kicked when it came to good old fasioned fist fights! :)
