    Thanks Gil for your analysis. A lot of pundits commentators and people online are ripping into Daniil like he’s some awful player. Sinner is playing insane right now and Dani didn’t execute on his tactics Sinner was like 9.5 no one is beating that! Sinner at his 100% is best player in world on this surface. When he plays 95% and Dani 70% of course this is the result. Dani needs to work on some things his mental strength is good against players he knows he is better than but suffers against these guys he misses easy shots that could get him advantage. Then he needs to improve serve not sure why his serve got a lot worse but that needs revamping big time maybe there is a physical reason his serve is worse than 2021 but if so needs to adapt something I believe he is capable of this. Overall still have faith in Meddy and think he will get occasional successes over Jannik and Carlos but it won’t be the status quo. Both Carlos and Jannik are generational talents and are taking tennis to a different level. Jannik reminds me very much of Djokovic in 2011.

    Fabulous Gill, many thanks..there was some commentary that Sinner played ok but it was mainly Medvedev playing badly..true he didn't play his best but Jannik didn't really allow him to. I admire Jannik so much for being willing to work on aspects of his game that don't come naturally to him and lose some matches but to persist nonetheless, 1 step back for 2 forward: it's paying off now. Also liked your upbeat message at the end that it has enriched them both.

    I don’t think Sinner’s ability to “make things boring” is talked about enough. He almost is never late to balls, goes for the solid rather than spectacular shots, can be slightly monotonous in rallies, makes his returns deep and serves to his spots. He’s getting the meat and potatoes right, but also has the power to hit anyone off the court on both sides. As Alcaraz showed at IW, and Djokovic at the ATP finals: you have to dig deep into your toolkit; get out of your usual patterns; and sustain a high execution level to make Sinner uncomfortable.

    Thank you for your analysis and take on what happened on Meds side, but also for the optimism on his future. I also see this as something very positive in the development for Medvedevs tennis/career and I think he is going through a patch now where he is taking risks, trying new things and changing things up, I have no doubt it’s going to pay off in the nearby future if he keeps trying. I mean this is the player that has surprised us most again and again. It’s kind off similar to Sinners rough patch in the beginning of last year when he was going through something similar until it all eventually clicked. Sinners also had many losses that felt uncharacteristic but you need to play in real matches to see where your progress is at. Medvedev is a thinking player and it was clear he was not playing like normal today, but I think it is even more positive that he is evolving. Looking forward to seeing him on clay.

      @@tamnatalie3 I don’t think Medvedev gets enough credit, I am not worried so much. At least now he can say “Ok, this tactic definitely doesn’t work all the time or requires perfect execution - maybe in the future I should use pieces of my usual style and injections of offense/aggression?” He could have played his usual style and still lose, but to lose like this is better whilst taking away a big lesson. Even Sinner himself said that it’s going to be interesting to see what Med does next, how he adapts after this loss - recognizing his own journey of evolving his game last year in what Medvedev is going through now. Positive feelings for the future.

    • @tamnatalie3
      @tamnatalie3 5 місяців тому +1

      @@rhubarb_rhubarbWe’re the few who remain positive after the tough loss. Many fans miss the top form Medvedev in 2021 with dynamite serve, but the reality is Meddy didn’t do well in sunshine double until 2023, he was in round 16 and QF at IW and Miami respectively in that year. Plus, he didn’t play well in clay season and Wimbledon either in 2021. If we look at that perspective, Meddy has kept improving, or else he couldn’t go back to top 3 after the slump in 2022. Yes, the loss to Sinner at Miami is embarrassing, but I agree that it’s not a bad tactic. He said at the press conference that the baseline rally game is not enough to beat Sinner. I don’t know if he can find a way to beat Sinner in big tournaments, but it’s fair to say that he’s kept improving his game.

      @@tamnatalie3 Totally agree, he is a smart guy, I am sure he knows what he needs to work on and do. People are so fatalistic in their outlook, so thank you to Gill also for lifting the positives in your channel. I think it’s great he has met Sinner so many times in a few months because it means 1) He is coming far in tournaments 2) They could’ve met several months or years apart and it would’ve possibly been even harder to grasp an understanding of Sinners game. Let’s believe in players.

  • @AGAU1022
    @AGAU1022 6 місяців тому +6

    Great analysis. Medvedev's serve definitely is the biggest potential improvement. He's one of the worst servers in the top 100 when adjusting for height. I think he could improve the quality of all serves including the kick serve and improve the variety and serve selection. He needs to be slightly more aggressive on both serves without losing consistency, which probably means more serve practice or serve +1 practice. Second biggest is the other thing you mentioned, choosing when to be aggressive and when not to be, not taking so long to make adjustments where necessary. Figure out what is working best at each stage of the much and adjust to the level the opponent is bringing in each point. But given his overall rally stats, you'd expect he's pretty good at that already.

    Sinner is just sublime tennis player, and he had a great day he is a real force to be reckoned with on a hardcourt imo he is the real no1 atm, not Djokovic who I feel would have got maybe 3-4 more games Vs this Sinner than Meddy did! Meddy probably feels pretty helpless after this defeat, but he just has to keep going growth comes from pain. Clay season could be a welcome break for him no expectations and maybe he can experiment with things in his game that will help him come USO swing which is his most important part of season.

    Medvedev's Struggle is all about the forehand. A waist level take back which is very time consuming spoiler his shot and forces him to play from the back of the court. If he comes closer it"s very hard him to hit a reliable forehand with this style. These tactics will not work unless he Changes his forehand technique.

    Sinners forehand is much better technically than Med. That to me is one of the big advantages. Med just doesn’t have the offensive power on that wing and he can be rushed. Cahill knows that and sinner exposed it today

      Yeah both Medvedev and Zverev should have monster forehands with their long levers but their technical deficiency makes it their weaker wing. If Zverev or Medvedev had a great forehands like Sinner/Tsitsipas/Alcaraz/Berrettini/Rublev or even Fritz, they'd be much damaging players.

    Gill on Meddy after AO final: "I don't think anyone would have touched him in set one, I don't think a single player on the planet would have been able to stay with him in set one". Gill now: (watch the video above). Not the first time Gill overreacts and exaggerates about Medvedev's level and cannot see solutions/tactics that other top players can use against him. 2 months ago it was about "offensive Medvedev", 3 years ago it was the same about "defensive Medvedev" (in the preview before 2021AO final - Medvedev as unbreakable defensive wall). Both visions dismantled very quickly (then Novak played too aggressive for Meddy, now Meddy is too weak offensively against Sinner). I would always wait with such strong statements, especially when we see something new in tennis. Yesterday Sinner looked like absolutely unbreakable defensive wall for most of the time, and great at offence as usual in the last 8 months. His focus, movement, decision making and shot making was at incredible level yesterday. But let's take a time and see if somebody will find solutions for this as well (on a quick hard courts). Yep, let's wait to the summer. Or at least to tomorrow😂

    Major Medvedev flaws were exposed today: Three-hand volleys, 4-handed body returns, hitting the ball flatter than Jimmy Connors. I think Medvedev will never beat Sinner again - unless he somehow catches him off guard, but that doesn't seem Sinner's style.
    I could see Daniil losing heart because what he's been trying to do is not working and starting to lose much more frequently to inferior players. And again, without his prime (2021) serve, nothing is possible.
