    The pressure on these two is immense, it’s def getting to both of them. Not only do they have to focus on winning, but also to live up to everyone’s expectations as the ‘future of men’s tennis’.
    People have to give them a break they’re both still so young.

      That's the problem. After the big three, tennis has become goal oriented sport. It seems to me they are already making Sinner and Alcaraz the slam title machines, and I don't like it. Especially in the case of Alcaraz. He is only 21, and they are teaching him the specific skills which in my opinion should come and develop naturally as the player progresses in his career.

      No one, not even Gill, mentions Alcaraz's forearm injury and that he hasn't had much match practice since Miami. He had to skip Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome because of this. Great job, Gil as always !
    It is becoming obvious, at least to me, that there is an Alcaraz factor, just like there was a Nadal factor when taking into consideration who will win a highly competitive match.
    I am thinking about your pre-match predictions of last year's Wimbledon final and today's match. In both cases you carefully and logically predicted that Alcaraz's opponent was going to win.
    Then, after both Alcaraz's wins you seemed to be surprised by his mental strength and terrific shots made under pressure.

      I totally agree, people expectations can have such a negative impact on these younger players mental pressure. After all , at a pro tennis level skill set , tennis becomes more of a mental game factored in with physical injuries. Even without such mental pressure, i think it will take a decade or more for anyone in these batch of younger talented player to achieve the record and statistics made by the BIG 3. Some form of Injury will befall on these younger players due to their application of too much on power and speed in their playing styles much earlier than the BIG 3. Among the BIG 3, it was Novak who had to make some radical adjustment on his physio and lifeestyle changes that enable him to still be able to play and compete at 37 against these new batch of power hitting upcoming talented players.To this day most of the power hitters/ servers have such a short span in their tennis careers and some even failed to reach or remain in the top, we can only name a few.

    Carlos had his classic nervous first set start, worked his way back in, had a lapse in the third set, then played amazing in sets 4 and 5. God this guy just has to take us on a rollercoaster every time. I do hope his nerves clear up and he can start getting off to better starts, but it also hasn’t hurt him so far as he keeps winning after those starts…
    Kept thinking there would be a point where Sinner’s consistent baselining would overwhelm Alcaraz’s inconsistency, he’d get broken and lose it, but Carlitos came up with the right shots at the right moments. Very clutch at the end of each set. Honestly, he just feels more like a veteran than Sinner does. Also Sinner’s body does break down over long matches; it’s been a trend throughout his career. We can give him a pass due to his preparation for this tournament, but at a certain point he needs to be more durable if he wants to dominate the sport.
    Really interesting match even if the quality was shaky the first three sets. I think this final is gonna be insane. Zverev is playing out of his mind, but Alcaraz is better on this surface.

      Counterpoint: Sinner did win the AO down two sets to love, so physically he is fine. Even in this match, outside of the cramps, he was doing well physically. Yes, he still needs to improve his stamina, but that comes with experience and more matches, imo. And please don’t compare Alcaraz and Sinner in terms of physicality and endurance.

      @@vivahernando1Eh idk. JCF really knows how to work with Carlos and seems very close to him. Plus his tactical adjustments are spot-on, and Alcaraz sometimes tactically looks lost without him. I saw him try to move forward on the second serve return when Sinner was physically struggling, which almost made me facepalm, but then JCF quickly told Carlitos to move back.
      As for nerves, those are personal and are for the player to figure out alongside a sports psychologist/therapist of some sort. It’s not the coaches job to fix their mentality; the coach gets you fired up, encourages you, and gives you tactics. If you consistently come out flat with low effort, that may be the coach’s fault, but Alcaraz never has that issue. He’s always 100% enthusiastic

      @@SJ-di5zu 1. Even if AO was beginning of the season, a tennis player still needs to be peak condition physically in order a slam. In addition, Sinner played a lot of matches at the end of 2023, so for him to be physically fresh by end Australian Open is an improved sign that he is getting better there physically. Also, if you look at his body of work from post USO until now, he has done well physically. You don’t win a lot of matches by now having a very good physical strength/endurance. Yes, he still needs to improve his fitness, however it is more incremental improvements than big ones
      2. You are right about that. But in this match, I don’t think Sinner lost because he was physically broke down or he started to limp around, it is just Alcaraz raised his level and was able to maintain at the end of the match.

    The deep position that Carlos took had a psychological effect on Sinner. I don't believe Sinner believed he could pass Carlos when he's standing so far behind the baseline receiving the serve. Carlos is so fast, you can't punish his deep position, since he's back in the centre so fast, ready for the next ball.

      Correct! At the same token, this is where Clay allows Alcaraz to return from way behind the baseline. On Clay, the speed of the shots that Sinner will hit will be neutralized just a little bit. Thus, Alcaraz is able to play defense exceptionally well.

      In slow/medium high bouncing courts, Alcaraz has the advantage.

      Things are very simple to the future of these two, if Sinner is able to sustain the level he showed in the first set and in the Australian Open , Alcaraz , for all his variety, doesnt stand a chance against him, balls coming from Sinner's racquet offensively and counterattacking are too fast and too well placed for Alcaraz to show his variety. But sustaining that level is very very difficult, just Djokovic in 2011 and 2013 and Sinner in the first months of 2024 have achieved that.

    • @joannemoore3976
      @joannemoore3976 3 місяці тому +1

      Jannik doesn't need to solve the Carlos riddle, their H2H is very even and Sinner was having success against him before he (Sinner) also began consistently beating other top players. Some of this is surface dependent and there were other factors. They both came in off injuries but the nature of Jannik's injury and also being ill, meant he wasn't able to train properly for RG; it was a good result to reach the semis tbf. Taking nothing away from Carlos who deserves to be in the final. But these 2 will just drive each other to improve, from both sides.

  • @Jalleur14325
    @Jalleur14325 3 місяці тому +1

    Interesting that the errors were from nerves, I guess it's normal because of the big hype and I think the pressure was more on Sinner than Alcaraz this time because of moving to world no 1, and having won the Aussie. I thought although it's clear that the shot making is more something that Carlos does, we did see more variety from Sinner. There was a very nice scooped cross court drive from an Alcaraz dropper, there was at least one beautifully executed drop shot, I think off the forehand wing.
    My worry with this rivalry was always that Alcaraz was just too good but I underestimated Sinner and I don't think for a moment that Alcaraz can rely on his superior toolkit and creativity. Jannik is a workhorse, and has shown how he has already grown variety in his game. I think had he had a better consistency day it could have been a closer match. But nonetheless for a player not known for clay court brilliance, a fantastic slam for jannik. I look forward to seeing what happens at Wimbledon.

    Jannik looked an alien until 2-0 in the second set, then, probably due to his poor form ('cause of illness+hip=2 kg less) he appeared out of steam (which also reflected in a poor serve performance in the second set) and had to change strategy (no long rallies). One could argue that Carlitos came from injury too but that was a kind of issue that doesn't prevent training endurance. In the end Jannik can be happy for a good performance with poor preparation in Carlitos surface. Hopefully there would be another clash in the Wimbledon final. I see a lot of people comparing quality of Sinner- Alcaraz matches with Nadal - Djokovic or Nadal - Federer and claiming quality was higher in older matches. I do wish we had a shot quality index leading to overall match quality index, which we could apply to past matches and compare with matches of current generation. I am a believer in human evolution and in my opinion general quality of game at top level improves from generation to generation. I feel older gen matches used to have a lot of ‘continue the rally’ balls which were landing half way through the court and not at sufficient depth and those balls would been crushed immediately by movers and shotmakers of sinner/alcaraz quality.

    • @MaliniAikat-p1q

      Completely agree. And with humaqn evolution so does the game. The tennis being played now is radically altered from Rod Laver's time. Everything has changed - rackets, strings, player's movements. Comparisons with earlier gens don't make much sense up to a point

      well your feeling is wrong, lazy shots like that got punished even during Djokovic' baseline time, same goes for Federer. Nadal sometimes brought back high looping mid-court shots at both of them and the commentators mentioned it instantly becaue it led to Nadal losing the point- quality index would also be hard to measure, e.g. Federer 2019 Wimbledon was amazing yet Djokovic still won even though his level wasn't as close.

    Sinner recovered from a cramp against a 21 year old player to give heck of a fight. It is only that Alcaraz is lucky as always that he won.
    Fluke Alcaraz on the other hand cramped against a 36 year old player last year on this very court but just couldn't recover and got hammered. His deluded fans, jealous Fedal fans and Novak's detractors use this cramping as a flimsy excuse to claim that Alcaraz would have easily won if he didn't have cramps even though they had split sets and Novak won more number of games.

    It's gonna sound weird but this match felt like a Federer-Djokovic encounter where Djokovic is the better more consistent player and generally has a better win record but Federer is a more skilled player and can construct more diverse points and sometimes pulls out wins due to his ingenious point construction. Alcaraz being the replacement for Federer and Sinner for Djokovic except Alcaraz doesn't play as well on fast courts and can't even touch Federer's serve or his volleying skills quite yet but is a better defensive player and on the flip side Sinner does not have Djoker's mental resilience or superior defensive skills but can hit bigger and probably serve bigger than Djoker. I feel like this new breed of players can replicate what the greats did but their separation is smaller i.e. there is a possibility that we wont just be able to guess who will win based on the surface being played on soon (right now that's not the case) and we'll have multiple contenders on each surface.

    I believe we are going to enter a much more evenly distributed top-10 era relative to what we’ve been used to. The Big Three Era was marked with the other three shadowing them (DelPo, Murray and Stan), and Marin Cilic caught lightning in a bottle. Then there was the core of a dozen or so other players that either clawed their ways to finals or offered consistent challenges in the second weeks of majors to the above champs. Now, we have a top 6-8 who can contend or stay healthy anywhere depending on conditions.

    I thought Sinner was the better player by far in the early goings. Due to his cramping, and his execution in big moments this year -I have to conclude Sinner was simply not as resilient physically - he had strength and fitness issues - and that was the difference! It may have been as simple as diet/ hydration. I mean there was no comparison in the quality of the Tennis in the early goings, Sinner was playing like prime Djokovic in caliber. Sometimes being a little shorter helps with muscular resilience through the course of a grueling tournament. But I do think Sinner is going to put it all together and keep having major success at tournaments, including beating Alcaraz next time they meet in a final; I also think clay is Sinner's worst surface against Alcaraz right now! (and he still looked better other than health setbacks in my estimation). I'm not saying Alcaraz isn't a phenomenal player or didn't deserve it, but I do think a non-cramping Sinner would have taken it in 4 sets. Sinner needs to think about borrowing from Djokovic's diet and stretching.

    must be weird for Sinner to get to the n1 the same week while current n1 and RG contender resigns from tournament while the other n1 and RG beats you.
    otherwise the match was weird. a huge drop in quality after the 1st set, physical issues. i was thinking that even Medvedev (considering his weakness on clay) and Djokovic would have their chances against both of Sinner/Carlos in this match.
    anyway, Carlos gifted a lot of spectacular shots for the audience and was not so restrained emotionally, fair pass to the finals for him.

    For me the moment that turned it was Sinner serving at 4-5 30-15, 2 sets to 1 up easy smash lets the ball bounce aprox 10ft from the net and missed 30-30 all instead of 40-15 then loses that game and the set! At 5-5 all Alcaraz was under more pressure!. Also got to say Sinners 1st serve was at 55% and didn't really hit a first serve when he needed it! As for cramping fitness etc. Didn't play for 3 weeks was suffering with a bad virus! I also believe the new coaching rules benefit Carlos more! He was getting very upset & frustrated at 6-2 2-0 down he was constantly being given instructions by his coach!

  • @karlcalaguas4054

    All in all, it was great win for Alcaraz as he is able to reach 3rd Slam Final (3 different surfaces) and was able to ride the ship especially in the 4th and 5th sets.
    As for Sinner, I think it was a "good" loss despite not serving well in the match (as Gill mentioned). Like I have mentioned before, Clay allows Alcaraz to be aggressive, use his shotmaking abilities and spectacular defense to beat Sinner in 5 sets. And despite all of that, Sinner was able to take it to 5 sets and make Alcaraz earn the win.
    In addition, I think this match bodes really well for Sinner's chances at Wimbledon and the NA HC season (particularly US Open). He knows what he needs to be done in order to maximize his chances to win his 2nd Slam title at Wimbledon.

      @@Jalleur14325 Possibly, but people are forgetting that Carlos' backhand slice on grass grew by leaps and bounds last year in that Queen's - Wimbledon double, and it could be the X-factor shot (along with a consistent serve and his drop shot working well) that let's him stay in points vs. Jannik and redirect play before pouncing on a short/poor ball.

    • @karlcalaguas4054
      @karlcalaguas4054 3 місяці тому

      @@Alboravin I don’t think anyone is forgetting about Alcaraz’s chances at Wimbledon. He is the defending champion after all, so he should be co-favorite for Wimbledon, at the very least.
      But just like Clay amplifies Alcaraz’s game, Grass should also amplifies Sinner’s game too. Sinner reach QF and SF in back to back years without having a reliable serve and mental toughness. Now that he has a reliable serve and has the belief/confidence to win any big tournaments, there’s no reason for him not to win Wimbledon.

    • @Alboravin
      @Alboravin 3 місяці тому

      @@karlcalaguas4054 The thing is, grass also amplifies aspects of Carlos' game too - or better said, his quick learning abilities during that Queen's-Wimbledon run last year where he pretty much learned how to successfully contend on grass in just a matter of weeks, improved his repertoire of shots with the BH slice in particular proving to be a revelation. He has a better net game and shot variety than Sinner, something that can close out points on grass better than on other surfaces, and in terms of serve: if both are bombing in high 1st serve %s and maintaining good spot serving then it's a moot point there, no huge advantage for one or the other in that department. I honestly think Carlos' BH slice could be the deciding factor if the stars align for everything else and they're both 100%, in top form.
      Jannik winning a Wimbledon or five at some point in his prime is highly likely. The only player I see as currently more complete than him on grass (injuries and form aside) is Carlos, and that's with all due respect to Djokovic, who may still be a threat for obvious reasons but Father Time is knocking on the door for him now. Sinner is already a contender for Wimbledon so why anyone would think that he can't win at least one in his career is beyond me.
