  • www.crosstrainingenduro.com How to ride single track on dirt bikes! Nothing focuses the attention like trying to stay on a track that is narrower than your handlebars at speed. We can show you how to ride dirt bikes using enduro techniques and dirt bike skills. As with most aspects of dirt riding, we are no good at this so have no qualifications to do a training vid about riding single track. But hey, that's never stopped us before. Body positioning. So... How to ride single track on dirt bikes. And they think that wheelspinning on the rev limiter will get them through and suddenly a beautiful single track becomes a rutted eroded nightmare. You can ride surprisingly tight single track in third gear if you learn to slip the clutch through and accelerating out of corners. When single track cornering, lean the bike but keep your body upright. So learn to ride properly and look after the tracks, ladies and gentlemen. Amen. How to ride single track on enduro bikes? Until it gets very tight and gnarly, you want to stand most of the time in single track. You can absorb bumps with your legs, and most importantly you can move your body from side to side as the bike bounces around and stay on that narrow track. A good sense of balance makes a big difference riding single track, get into our static balance training. And of course you should be in the default body position that keeps the rear weighted for traction. Keep your head up and look ahead. It's very tempting to look down just ahead of your front wheel in single track but you need to prepare for what's coming and trust your brain subconsciously to deal with the immediate stuff. Well it seems our regular cross training ride vids have become a motovlog, or vlog for short. Here are all our dirt rides starting with our latest ones- we must warn you our earlier motovlogs were a bit long and boring, they get shorter and better with time! A massive thanks as always to the guys who let us ride on their properties - Sam, Pete, Johnno, Kev and the WDTC club... and to Tim Coleman for helping us with enduro techniques. The best way to stay up-to-date with these vids is via our motovlog playlist. One of the reasons a lot of riders don't tell others about their single tracks is because you get hopeless riders getting stuck everywhere. Learn to leg paddle while standing on the footpegs in single track. When it gets rutted and nasty, you will often need to put a foot down and if you can do this while standing, you'll get through faster.

    Keep it smooth in single tracks. Beginner riders will be better off in the middle of the track at first and only using that berm to save themselves if the bike slides out. Deliberately ride in a higher gear with less revs. So often I see guys trying to accelerate and brake hard in single track and they end up riding a lot slower and often spearing off the track. If the tyres slip you can suddenly pull the bike into an upright position and sometimes this can save the bike instead of crashing. What do the world's best extreme enduro riders have in common? Riders like Graham Jarvis, Jonny Walker, Alfredo Gomez and Tim Coleman are all former trials riders who applied cross training skills to hard enduro events. Learning how to ride a dirt bike? Or taking your enduro technique to the next level? Get into cross training. A good way to form this habit is by weighting the inside footpeg into corners instead of turning the handlebars. It can feel fast because you hear the engine revving but until you become a very skilled rider it will just slow you down and cause mistakes. Top riders can blast along single track at ridiculous speeds on single track by using the edges of the single track as little berms when cornering. Impressive to watch but there is very little room for error. As with all aspects of dirt riding on single track, think outside the box when it comes to line selection. You don't have to stay in the middle of the single track especially if there are puddles of water, tree roots or ruts in the middle. Sometimes it pays to do a slalom action across the single track and ride up and down those little walls at the edge. When it gets nasty in single track and you have to sit, remember your traction control tips for getting over obstacles like tree roots. You can rock the bike or do a seat bounce with a controlled drop of the clutch. See our video on traction tips when you are stuck.

    Im 57. Exercise, exercise, exercise. If not daily, at least 3-4 times a week. A good cardio. Light weight arm, wrist, shoulder, leg routine. Hydration with plain ole water before you ride. I struggled with arm pump and fatigue before I started doing these things. Now I can ride for 5-6 hours before I start to fade. Tore my ACL and got WAY out of shape. After therapy and a return to my exercise routine, things changed dramatically. Move it, hydrate it or lose it.

      Great to hear. In my sixties now and I'm exercising every day just so I can get through a dirt ride and not be in too much pain the next day. The last two years I realised I needed to either really up the exercise or do more normal riding instead of the hard enduro stuff. I've opted for the latter.

    Coming from a moto background, I had very little experience on single track. The first real experience was in a dual sport ride with miles of continuous single track. The first part was through fields of two foot high grass. Absolutely no way for me sitting down to set up for a curve.
    I got frustrated waiting on the trailside for my slower buddy after this tall guy passed me. I fired up and chased him. Full on moto style. He clearly was not working as hard as me.
    I learned from that experience exactly what you’ve recommended by watching him.
    Stand, don’t look down, look ahead. I noticed I was weighting the inside peg but resisted it because my moto training says weight the outside.
    So now I know my instincts were correct.
    Thanks, can’t wait to see how it goes.

    Single track - Its all I ride on. old vintage bikes. I have nothing newer than a '94. my oldest is a '72. Ya gotta be tough to ride a '72 these days! Thanks for great videos. This helps me... As it does others too.... and yes, weight on the inside peg ... Counter balance is a BIG key in single track. Keeping your body straight, and toss the bike back an fourth - like we did riding pedal bikes - swoosh the bike left and right while standing and pedaling is how we gained speed... just the same concept with the dirt bike, except of course, the engine does the work instead of pedal power. :D

    Can someone explain me why ? I find my sec hand ktm an agile ,throw it anywhere , amazing torqy little thin. Ok as a Belgian i find that orange ugly ;D as hell but thats the only thing atm that is negative :D. Anyhuuu one needs to watch these vids !! it should be obligated ! All the best you funny talking Aussie :D

      hoe gaat het, john. ou comment ca va? my apparent hatred of austrian bikes is really just an ongoing joke. it's explained here: ua-cam.com/video/qSg2sll6yEo/v-deo.html
      but i have owned a few very happily. and my brother had the 350 and it was a great bike. but some people seriously dislike KTM for various reasons. in the early days they could be very unreliable and some think they still are. in some countries the bikes and/or parts are a lot more expensive because they simply know they can charge more. like all manufacturers, at times they make major mistakes and aren't quick to fix them. and have been accused of releasing innovations too soon and using us as guinea pigs. i covered these topics in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/kxCHcoHEEBA/v-deo.html
      but generally they are great bikes, and probably the best in certain categories in past years but i think the other europeans have mostly caught up with them now... and are cheaper.

    I've always been rubbish at standing all the time, especially when it's narrow. End up leaning into a corner, with the tires almost leaving the trail and my upper body going through bushes and tree branches on the inside, unless I go trials-slow. I've also had the devil's own time trying to shift, when half of my weight is bearing down on a foot that's supposed to be maneuvering for the lever. I have much better success personally by staying seated and keeping my center of gravity low, then only standing when I need to for bumps. Given that I ride vintage bikes with crap suspension compared to everyone else, you'd think I'd be the last person to get away with such shenanigans. Perhaps it's because the vintage seats are so much wider and more comfortable.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  4 роки тому +2

      i find the vintage bikes almost impossible to stand on, the ergos seem to be aimed at sitting most of the time.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 4 роки тому

      @@crosstrainingenduro Interesting. I need to get some time on modern bikes and see if there's a big difference in that regard. One thing I've noticed is that the vintage machines usually came with real tall bars, which are comfortable for standing but get awkward when you sit forward on the gas tank to attack a turn.

    Serious question. In your videos you say weight the inside peg. I have saw else where to weight the outside peg. Seems to me if the bike washes out and your weight is outside you can put the inside foot down a little faster. You defiantly need to lean the bike over more so maybe it is a wash. No pun intended. Just asking because I am way more of a gumby than you are.

      thought about that myself ,think weighting the outside peg put more weight to the tyres when cornering on mx track,think weighting the inside peg helps the bike turn quicker on narrow tight trails at slower or using less revs than racing mx

      I don't know if I am that slow and it is that technical I am normally very loose on the bike letting the seat move from side to side as needed between my legs. Makes me feel like a nads the size of my bike.

      When standing, weight the inside peg to make the bike turn in. In a longer flowing corner, you'll naturally then transition to weighting the outside peg once the bike is 'set' on the line you want. Experiment by riding in a straight line when standing, and shifting your weight from one foot to the other - you'll notice how agile the bike is, as you're basically making it fall over.

      Weight the inside when standing and the outside when sitting on tight, sharp corners while your inside leg is out stretched. That's how I do it anyway

    "as w/ most aspects of dirt riding..." did you come up w/ that, or, is it British\Australian legal slang for similar off-the record comments e.g., We take no liability for some yahoo who tries this at home...?
    Thanks for your humor!
