The Chosen and an absolute crazed sped up rendition of Kill the King from To Live Again are also worth checking out. Or the softer side on Sleepless from Stigmata. Totally agree, Kip Winger is one of the most underrated singers, song writers and producers. I am fortunate to have worked with him on several occasions, he invited me to play a few shows with him and also plays bass on 2 of my albums.
Their first two albums had some really good moments mixed in with the silliness. Headed for a heartbreak and State of Emergency were awesome, and from In the heart of the young the title track is fucking awesome and a must hear if you never heard it.
Recognized the name from trying to figure out who he was in The Eagles Farewell Concert (I only recognized the other three). My dad knew who he was right away though lol. Funny thing, he kind of reminds me of you Ken (appearance-wise, cause of the hair).

Billy Sheehan has shown time and again that he has some serious pipes! He always blows my mind with his backing vocals both in Mr Big and The Winery Dogs, with none other than Richie Kotzen
I’m so glad you included Dug Pinnick, even if just an honorable mention. King’s X is such an underrated band. But I can’t believe that Chris Squire wasn’t on your list. 🤔 Marco Mendoza is also an amazing bassist and vocalist.

I'm a lead singer bassist and one trick I've developed is Whisper Mode . When learning a difficult passage deactivate your vocal chords and whisper the vocal part this lets you build muscle memory while dropping the vocal melody mentally . This technique also helps you practice without ripping your vocal chords out doing the 60hrs repetition it generally takes me to get to performance level on a cover .
I was going to add that the end of the video looked like Greg Lake was mistaken for John Wetton, since that was his song being sung from the group, Asia.
I would include Mr. Mister's Richard Page as well, great bass player and an outstanding vocalist imho! Great video as per usual Ken, loving the series and the concept of these vids.. keep it up!
Felix Poppalardi from Mountain, Theme For An Imaginary Western written by Jack Bruce. Felix' voice was the anti Leslie West voice so added dimension to Mountain. So glad you featured Lip Winger!
Love the list. Most of my favorite musical artists are bassists. It's also something I am planning on picking up when I have more free time. But I feel there are two names missing from the list: 1. Les Claypool (Primus) 2. Kim Deal (Pixies, The Breeders)
Glad to see Randy Meisner on the honorable mention list, could easily fit on the top list in my view. He can play, hit the high notes and there is a passion you hear when he performs “his own thing” as a writer.
Glenn Hughes is definitely number one for me. Especially the fact that he can STILL sing great at his age considering all the drug abuse he was involved with
You forgot Rick Danko of The Band. Incredible bassist/multi instrumentalist/singer in the rock and roll hall of fame! Killer vocals/harmonies with Richard Manuel and Levon Helm.
James Dewar ! ! ! I just remembered him and I'm ashamed I had forgotten about him. He should absolutely be high on this list. Edit: I see others have mentioned him already. Thumbs up for all of you.
Me, his bass playing is so underrated, very in the pocket for hard rock, his effort on Might Just Take Your Life from the Cal Jam concert made me pick up the bass guitar
Chris Squire (RIP) is a surprising omission. Even though he wasn't known as a lead singer, Squire was the key ingredient in Yes's unique vocal sound - on top of being an all-time great bassist. His distinctive vocal tone is what made Yes sound like Yes.
Chris Squire actually sang lead on a few Yes songs and the latter albums he appeared on and Michael Anthony used to sing lead on Child in Time in the band he was in before joining Van Halen.
Hi Ken, great list, my number one will always be Phyl Lynott for ever. His voice is so emotional, make me thrill each time I listen to his songs. He's everlasting (And thanks for not forgetting Doug Pinnick, great singer too, great bass player as well) Hello from France
As a longtime Rush fan, I'm so happy to see Geddy top this list. I say this as a bassist whose singing voice would be outlawed by the Geneva Conventions if I ever unleashed it upon anyone. I don't hate humanity enough to inflict my singing voice on anyone. I won't even sing Happy Birthday, because it would be so far from happy.
Good list Ken. Others I would add off the top of my head: Jack Blades, Pat Badger, Tony Franklin, Richard Page, Peter Cetera, Greg Chaisson, Kevin Young and Timothy B. Schmidt.
I thought Naw you wont put Peter Cetera in there. Then just when I was about to give up- you Never disappoint! Yep he def had to be in that list Ken. ✌😁🎸
John Wetton is number one for me since I first hear him with King Crimson. He is featured as the last honorable mention in your video but listed as Greg Lake.
I saw the title and I immediately thought: "Geddy Lee!". Nice that he is on the top :) By the way, very cool video. Usually the "Top 10" videos are kinda boring but when you add a bit of interesting stories about the musicians, it gets way better. I am curious to see "Top 10 singing drummers".
Phil Lynott is my favorite singer of all time. His vocal tone was phenomenal. He was incredibly proud of being an Irishman raised in Dublin, even though he was born in England.
Chris Squire doing the high harmonies with Yes and Timothy Schmit from when he was in Poco and The Eagles would be in my top 10 but that shows our age difference. Jack Bruce singing White Room would have been perfect, but only you and I will know what we are talking about. Music is art and we have differences of opinions and if the artist has fans they deserve respect accordingly. Do a video on harmony and back up players. Without great backup vocals like Squire and Schmit the bands wouldn't been able to do the great live shows they did, Playing bass and singing is as hard as playing lead and singing.
Jack Bruce! The next singer/bassist on the scene after Sir Paul. Cream was one of the influencial bands of all time, and Bruce's vocal paved the way for the next generation of high operatic type rock singers.
Great video and great selections Ken! Love that you added Marco from Nightwish, Kip Winger and Peter Steele! I think it would be safe to add Les Claypool, odd vocal style but unique and a virtuoso on the bass!
Ken you just made my day bro by naming Geddy Lee the no 1 bassist he deserves it so much and comming from you the Wizard of music dissection good job like always

I was waiting for Dug Pinnick. Glad you at least put him the honorable mention section. Being a King's X fan, of course I thought he belonged in the top 10. I enjoyed the video. God bless you, Ken!
The last one was John Wetton!!! Great Singer of King Crimson and Asia. The difficulty is that the older Wetton looks like the younger Lake. Now they are playing togehter again in heaven. RIP brothers!
Glad you chose geddy as your number one pick.Rush has been my favourite band since 1976. Arguably a band with a drummer who is thee best or second best all time percussionist in many generas and the lyricist , an under rated guitarist Alex who is probably on the top ten best guitarists in rock and then geddy who is in the top three best bassists. Geddy is like a magician playing complicated arrangements on bass, keyboard and vocals all at the same time. With this much talent this three man band sounds like an orchestra...one of the tightest live rock bands you will ever see.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I grew up with most of the people on your list, they were good but the only one that gives me the wow moment is Marko. I recommend further investigation into his singing if you have time. Not just with Nightwish.
Esperanza Spalding. I know that this isn't in the genre that you're focusing on, but if you are mentioning bass players that can sing, there's no one that touches this lady. The fact that she is improvising bass lines at the same time as singing melodies is insanely impressive.
Great list, I've seen many of these folks live! Like other commenters said, there are some that could be added, but you would have to make an hours long video. Geddy is an absolute beast, especially when he was younger.
When you featured dUg Pinnick in the honorable mentions .. It just clued me that you should have also featured Ty Tabor .. As a great guitarist that can also sing!
Mark King is the best bass player who can sing and play bass in my opinion, he’s so cool and my favourite bass lines by him are “Love Games”, “The Chinese Way” and “Micro-kid”. 😁👍
I don't think Les gets enough credit for his vocals. His bass playing is the show stealer, but he has a very unique vocal range as well. I'm not sure too many people could even sing Tommy the Cat, yet alone do it while playing that bass line.
Yes, yes you do.... Les couldn't sing to save his life or career. Hence the failure of Primus. How many number 1's do they have? None? Get the hint yet!
@@Me4-gc8qs Primus wasn't about being "in." Claypool and Co. are in it for being weird and are still releasing music. Check out the Desaturating Seven, which came out 3 years ago.
Maurice wasn't just the bass player, he was a instumentalist. Playing keys (Melotron, keyboard, organ, piano) and rhythm guitar. And often singing harmonies at the same time.
Great list here! But I would have had Greg Lake in the top ten. WOW what a performer he was. Note: in your honorable mention you actually have the band Asia with John Wetton instead of the intended Greg Lake of ELP. But I loved John Wetton too!
I totally agree with what you said in your intro. I played bass in a metal band in the mid 80’s and when our singer left we spent months trying to find another one. With a gig coming up we had to resort to one of the remaining band members singing and that fell on me. Being a bass player I thought “bass players can’t sing” but I totally got into the role and discovered I could sing. I ended up staying on vocals and bass and we smashed out tons of great metal tunes particularly from Judas Priest and Van Halen. Moral of the story...bass players can be successful singers!!
Marco Hietala from nightwish singing high hopes (Pink Floyd) one of the highlights of his singing abilities
Thanks for the tidbit!
Please check out Tarot - Wings Of The Darkness the original 80's version ! :)
Without Marco in the list it's hard to take it seriously. He's also an instrumentalist.

Wow...superb...what an informative video..Great trip down memory lane..oh and thanks for the great singing advice....cheers from the 🇬🇧
HAHAHA.... I love Suzi Quatro the most! Still to this day she is a marvelous performer! Thanks for sharing!
She's such a cutie and the chick can rock!
Before I watch the list, is Marco Hietala from Nightwish featured?
Yes.
Thanks for mentioning Esperanza.
Thanks a lot, Mr Ken. I didn't seen this video until now ! I can't believe it
Great list, I've seen many of these folks live! Like other commenters said, there are some that could be added, but you would have to make an hours long video. Geddy is an absolute beast, especially when he was younger.
Yes, it could easily be Top 100, couldn't it?
@@kentamplin absolutely
I think Randy Meisner should be in the top 10. His high range was incredible ( just in his chest voice)
Great list, tons of talent there. But like all lists there's always a few "why didn't you list" candidates. Mine is Jeff Pilson. Loving the channel!
Thanks for sharing!
When you featured dUg Pinnick in the honorable mentions ..
It just clued me that you should have also featured Ty Tabor ..
As a great guitarist that can also sing!
You just did! Thanks!
As a bassist who suddenly and unexpectedly found himself the singer in the band, this is a great one!
Thanks for listening!
Mark King is the best bass player who can sing and play bass in my opinion, he’s so cool and my favourite bass lines by him are “Love Games”, “The Chinese Way” and “Micro-kid”. 😁👍
Les Claypool, Do I need to say more :D
Primus!
My name is Mud!
Thank you. What are your thoughts on Maurice Gibb’s (Bee Gees) bass playing and singing?
The Bee Gee's were brilliant.
Maurice wasn't just the bass player, he was a instumentalist. Playing keys (Melotron, keyboard, organ, piano) and rhythm guitar. And often singing harmonies at the same time.
My favorite bass player who sing is Peter Steele on Type O Negative
Cool!
Thank you for including the fabulous Suzie Q.
😊
So glad you put Kip Winger in the list. He is exceptionally talented. Love him. 🎤🎸🎤🎸🎤🎸🎤
And Phil Lynott too. 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Great list here! But I would have had Greg Lake in the top ten. WOW what a performer he was. Note: in your honorable mention you actually have the band Asia with John Wetton instead of the intended Greg Lake of ELP. But I loved John Wetton too!
Jimmy Plato 👍
Ken, Would like to add 3 more: Rob Grill, The Grass Roots, Richard Page, Mr. Mister, Billy Greer, Kansas.
Thanks for the additions, VIDEOHEREBOB!
Top class musician. He was asked to join Toto in the past.
Yeah! Rob Grill! Good to see him getting some love!
Great shirts, as usual!
I'm so glad you think so! 😊
😊
Great show Ken! Phil Lynott makes my heart melt! What a Wiz! Thanks again for this list full of stars. Joakim. The Men Manager. Themen.se
Thank you!
