I love hearing Thomas sing at the end of this song. It's like they're words he wanted to hear, so, lacking other voices, he wrote them to himself. And Floor sings this so kindly, empathic, angry, hurt, then compassionate. The way the others come up to check on Tuomas, to distract him like good brothers would. The drummer working away for such a long song. I'm in love with them all.
@@RangelGabrielI am lazy to find it from google or some interview or from some book. But that is what Tuomas himself had said about this song, story behind it, and about details in different parts of the song. He was so broken that time that he had to stay mom and dads home. In there his mother try to help him and be there for him. It is true story.
There is no doubt. And I was a real Tarja fan. But one week after recording the 2013 show in Wacken I heard them in my hometown at the Mera Luna Festival and I kicked Tarja off her throne and sat Floor on it. More words are unnecessary.
So what???? Tuomas don't explore floor's voice, he's wasting it, there's not a single song made for floor with the power of phantom love score or pendulum and the poet
How the hell did I overlook this??!! Always took Floor Jansen as a hard-core rocker chick, but her voice in the Pacific part..... totally blew me away!! I had to roll back to hear it again!!! Love this woman!!!! THANK YOU NIGHTWISH!!!!!
I think Tarja is a great singer and Annette was a really good singer. I also give props to Annette for being the original singer of this masterpiece of a song. But damn it just seems like Floor descended from heaven specifically just to sing this song. I don't think I've ever heard anything so beautiful in all my years listening to Heavy Metal music.
Floor Jansen is arguably the best metal singer ever in my honest opinion. Her versatility is second to none. She has great choreography phenomenal stage presence and the Fantastic ability to bring all old Nightwish songs to life! Happy listening my friend!
Oh yes, the Goddess of all Metal huh? Y'all bash Anette for being off key, and not even hearing it with this one. Listen to the chorus 3:50-4:40.. that is so false its not funny. Also, it was made for Anette, not the fakery of this one. Perhaps the day she puts some real emotions into this song, we can talk about it. But until then, Anette reigns supreme on DPP and Imaginaerum songs.
“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good and just and beautiful.” ― Plato
Exactly this band just deserves much more than what it is now honestly their songs and specially this one are somethings really unique that i have never heard befor
This is not just a simple song... it's a Symphonic Artwork... Tuomas is an absolute genius and Floor is simply a force of nature, powerful and engaging... both as a singer and as a performer... her voice strikes the soul!!! Nightwish absolutely fantastic!!! 🤘🖤🤘💥
I just checked out the original album version of this song. The vocals are clean, accurate, and beautiful. But here, Floor brings so much more nuance and emotion, employing her array of technique to breathe new life into the song. The "Pacific" section is absolutely stunning! Her phrasing and vocal formant shaping is spot on, and she's allowing space for the cello to carry the song in this delicate passage. She thins out her voice in just the right places to create a gentle sensitivity that's like a warm embrace for your brain stem. Then moving to the lower register she brings a resonance and power that is deeply moving. She's found the distinction between singing the notes and singing the music, and it shows. Tuomas appears to notice this (his expression at 5:42 suggests that he's feeling it big time). To write such an amazing song is an accomplishment in itself, but to have it sung so beautifully must feel like a true gift. It certainly is a gift for us!
Not to rain on your parade here, but no, she just made it hers. Floor has excellent power over her voice, but its not hard to hear that she lacks something the original had. The raw passion, the soul and the emotion of "living" the song. Floor performs it to pitch perfection yes, but lacking the essential things that is supposed to make you feel it, it comes off as merely a performance. The song wasn't made for Floor at all, and they chose to change it to make it more "Floor"ish if you will. That is all well and good, but it still lacks the essentials. Sorry, but that is a fact. Other than that, of course, its a solid performance.
@@michaelvedal1907 Of course Floor's version is a performance, and it will always be different than the original as sung by a completely different person. While "living the song" seems more like Tuomas's domain than anyone's, I think Floor brought a lot of emotion to her version with her vocal inflection choices. But your milage may vary, and that's okay. While it is natural to compare one vocalist to another when they've been part of the same band, I think each of them will reach some of us more than others, possibly on different tracks. Many fans seem to want to approach this from a "Sammy vs. David Lee Roth" arch-rivalry perspective, but I think that while I do have my favorite Nightwish female vocalist, each one they've had brought something to the band throughout their evolution. That's worth celebrating. :) Cheers!
@@michaelvedal1907 Floor has plenty (I'd even say much more) passion and emotion in this song. Thus, she does not lack anything, especially not anything essential, in fact I'd say the song is finally living to its fullest potential. It wasn't changed at all, here it's actually performed closer to the studio original thanks to Floor's capabilities.
I’ve always wondered how Tuomas knew he was writing this song for Floor…………. Nah! I know he wrote it for her, she was always on his radar since they toured together, IMO…….
@@michaelvedal1907 the album version was real life. This is the retelling of it, the legend that gets told and passed on. Floor doesn't live it but she tells the story epically.

@@Harolddespui you mean Annette? Tarja never sand this song and this was composed after she left to express the depression he felt. Floor and Tarja are very good friends in real life for decades.
11:08 Floor always manages to bring tears in my eyes at that part. It's like the texture of her voice connects directly with my mind and nerves. It's unexplainable. Her voice turns text and music straight into emotions. No other singer has ever achieved that. I've listened to countless good live performances, but getting to the point of being unable to stop tears... that happens only with Floor. This woman is a GODDESS!

The Poet and the Pendulum is in large part inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” tale, where a man is thrown into an execution chamber and is chained to a post while a blade in the shape of a pendulum is descending upon him and will kill him in 3 minutes. At the end of “Dark Passion Play” and at the beginning of “Mother and Father”, you hear the sound of the blade and then a few heart beats. The subject has been killed, and then “Mother and Father” is the voice of an angel or God welcoming him into heaven.
Floor is phenomenal, i agree. But come on she is not THE singer of all time. Sierra Boggess (the "real" singer in Phantom of the opera), Jessie J, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and a lot more i cant think/know of.
Guillaume Feugueur you name some amazing singers yes, in their own genre, but none of them have the range and variety and ability to go from opera to metal not only in the same song but on same breath and make it look so easy. And what an amazing stage presence. She controls the crowd. I have been around a long time and she is the best I have ever seen.
@@claudiorabaglino6079 Lady Gaga can, probably Jessie J too. Beyonce is such a vocalist too. And to be fair Phantom of the opera is .... not an opera, it's a musical. And if you look for the same kind of singer there was.. Tarja who is able to do whatever she wants with her voice. But she keeps doing more operatic cause she likes it (i prefer Floor style to be honest though)
@@guitop Celine Dion really ? Have you ever actually listened to Celine she has a horrible thin nasal tone and strains when she belts, extremely unpleasant to listen to - probably the most overrated diva of all time. Lady Gaga (not a soprano) is good and she could easily sing metal if desired but Floor already covered her song "Shallow" and Floor's expression & breath control was better than Gaga. I agree that Mariah & Whitney had better range and agility than Floor but then again Floor has more belting power than either of them (Mariah would have trouble cutting through the band if she was NIghtwish's frontwoman). Beyonce is a joke she's a singer turned into a twerker.
@@gencoserpen1260 Bashing Celine just because you don't like her voice is just retarded. She is definitely one of the greatest vocalists of all time and far from overrated. Only a few singers can control their voice as well as she does. Be objective. The timely question here, if any of the two, is have YOU actually listened to Celine, because your description doesn't fit. Lady Gaga is almost unlistenable in my opinion and her music is a load of garbage. Lady Gaga could not do what Floor does.
Floors is always so good, but her delivery in the pacific part is just out of this world good. I'm so happy Nightwish and Floor found each other. Tuomas is a genius composer and they are all such great musicians. I was sad when Jukka Nevalainen had to quit, but Kai Hahto is just amazing! Gives just that lovely intensitity to the drumming. I wish Nightwish all the best!

I tried to watch the live version with Annette, but I was unable to finish it; I needed it to switch to this version. Annette is a good singer, but Floor is a goddess.
Tuomas is a genius indeed. Write such beatiful lyrics and music. Father and Mother part is so beatiful that makes me want to cry. Floor sings perfectly
Those songs performed by Floor are just kicking me out of depression so fast! It's unbelievable. This girl and her voice are magical! Tks God for sending this girl to us.
It kicked me out of a pretty nasty depression as well. Music has always been a very integral part of my life. But music now in America is just commercialized and mainstream. When I found Nightwish I was woken up to a completely new genre of music and have listened to several other European metal bands that I love! Thank God for Nightwish!
Guys I feel you.. Same here... Me as a European, I can say nightwish made my life way better in a way that depressions won't find grip in my mind anymore ✌️
Hard to go back to any studio version from Annette or Tarja after watching Floor live nailing their songs. Floor's power is ethereal a force to be recognized.
I have all of Nightwish's albums and have been listening to them since the 90's but only recently started watching them live and it's an entirely new level of awesome seeing them perform. Floor has the most spectacular stage presence I have ever seen.
Really? While I dislike the whole Floor/Tarja thing I reckon Tarja had the upper hand in that department. A natural actress as well as singer. And I wouldn't leave Anette out of it either.
(1) If you are referring to Ghost Love Score Tarja Turunen "walked off stage" because that was the arrangement so she would not just stand there with her hands in her pockets while the song played out with deliberate emphasis on the instrumental and choral conclusion. (2) Floor Jansen often walks off stage during performances and usually for the same reason - there is a protracted instrumental section. Anette Olzon I don't know about but I assume she did the same. Your remark about Tarja Turunen's "class" is reprehensible.
I do not think I made myself clear in my comment and for that I apologize. I watched a video of all three singers singing ghost love score and tarya WALKED OFF STAGE AND DID NOT FINISH THE SONG!! You could see the band playing the song to the very end and she was absent, she did not finish the song. The ending of that song is the most epic part of it! And I know that singers often walk off the stage during the longer musical compositions of the song which makes total and complete sense . She may have been fighting with the band, but her fans did not deserve that treatment. They paid their hard-earned money and some even travel long distances to see them live and to hear her sing. And for her to treat THEM like that is what is truly "reprehensible". And I stand by my comment that her actions were not classy AT ALL. However you are entitled to your own opinion.
At 11:53 when Floor sings the line 'All you need is to feel my love' notice that for 1 second she looks as if a mother would indeed say that to her child. You can see weakness in her eyes , joy , innocence, peace , love . Maybe she is thinking of her daughter when she sings that. Makes this performance even more epic, small moments like that. We are so lucky , massive respect and gratitude. Thank you Nightwish.
The tears...can't hold them back when the final part starts at 10.16. Damn this is out of this world. Tuomas my man you are the god of all music and all emotions!! RESPECT! Floor...RESPECT!!!

Holy mother of God , what a voice , what a voice , goosebumps, what a voice , damn , she say thank-you but we are be grateful for hearing you Floor , Epic Song , I don't think that anyone y this world can sing better , just pure voice , powerful, expression, headbanging that voice that voice that voice, and I never hear this band before ,how many time loss hearing evanescence, fuck. Now I follow that woman in every social media and now a big fan , as anyone that can hear she, wonderful she.
This is one of the very few bands that their live stuff surpasses their studio stuff... I've got well over two hundred shows and forty-five years of being a music fan under my belt and I can count such bands on one hand....great stuff.
@@jounipesonen3569 lol, I'm what some would say is "pretty old," being in my fifties. That said, I've seen a whole lot of music "genres" be born and die, some fail horribly and some stick around. I enjoy many different kinds of music from Folk, Country, and Blues...to R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, Techno-Funk, on through Rock, Metal, Thrash, and everything in between. To me, this band just screams Queensryche (one of my very favorites), Savatage, Running Wild, but with the sophisticated flow and complexities of Angel, Yes, and Rush. A confusing plethora to some maybe, but I can hear a bit of all of them in what Nightwish does. Part of my opinion comes from around two hundred live shows I've seen during my life (a dying thing thanks to the internet and makes me sad for younger people that probably will never see a live performance). I'll probably spell it wrong, but going to Wakken once before I croak is way up on my bucket list. Nightwish, Kamelot, Evergrey, Epica, Sad Alice Said, and In This Moment are some of the "newer" bands that impress the hell out of me (even though a couple, like Kamelot, have been around for a looong time). Live concerts and accompanying stage shows were a huge part of the make-up of bands back in the day. Nightwish definitely rivals some of the best I've seen, yet I've never seen them live (and I'm jealous of those that have). I put them on the same level as KISS, Rush, Dio, Iron Maiden, and others of that ilk. Over three hours of pure "ass-kickery" that was worth going to even if you didn't like the music. I hope I can make a Nightwish show if they tour the United States. Anyway, sorry to be so long-winded, but I thank you for your response and suggestion. I'll definitely check em out, and more suggestions from yourself would be appreciated. "Word of mouth" is how I've been able to experience great bands and their music the majority of the time over the years...but, thanks again, and send a few more that you'd think are worthwhile (and by the way, those that think women can't be "heavy," and have no place in Metal, or any other genre, are out of their minds).
"You have such oceans within". Let's analyze just this part of the song, shall we? The soul compared to oceans. Simply beautiful. The sea can be calm or stormy, just like the soul could be calm or angry. Saying that you have more than one, means that you're not comparable to another person on the way you feel pain, joy, sorrow, anger... every ocean is different and beautiful like all the rest of your oceans. To you to embrace all of them like a normal human being makes you feel more vulnerable to others, and imperfect. Which ocean you will show to another human being the next time? All of this, just pure poetry. Tuomas, you're simply a genius. Oh, and obviously Floor's voice on this part is like it should be. Very haunting, yet beautiful. My god.
And then add onto that its about him struggling with the whole breakup and backlash he got, when only they wanted what's best for the band. People made him the scapegoat for it but it was the bands decision. He channels those emotions so well in this song and Floor gives it so much more meaning than the lyrics alone that its beyond great.
Oh stop it, this was the part that makes me break into tears every single time. Everyone who has even the slightest artistic tendency in their heart will do that.
Damn! This really is the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of Tuomas Holopainen, like Freddie Mercury's epic masterpiece. No one really knows excactly what both songs are about. Both tracks give us some clues, but no one really can tie them all together. A given is, that both of these epic pieces need epic end versitile singers like Freddie Mercury, and his female equivilent, Floor Jansen. "The Valkyrie".
If you google (or read the UA-cam comments) you know what this dong is really about...... but it's very poetic......and the 3 min. reference is brilliant.... exactly 3 minutes later.....
Oh my dear Holy God, this girl is a gift to NW. She continues to surprise me! NW has given us 2 former great singers, and now Floor completes the circle. We fans are truly spoiled by NW's phenomenal music and their singers interpretation of what is written & played. Never stop, ever!

Best Front Woman....Ever....in any band.
Good guess but those are the words his mother said to him when he went back home after firing Tarja
@@ronswasonbutcuter4474 wow. Is there a source to it?
@@RangelGabrielI am lazy to find it from google or some interview or from some book. In there his mother try to help him and be there for him. It is true story.
Floor is everything that nightwish ever needed!

She is not singing, her soul is singing
I think Tarja is a great singer and Annette was a really good singer. I also give props to Annette for being the original singer of this masterpiece of a song. But damn it just seems like Floor descended from heaven specifically just to sing this song. I don't think I've ever heard anything so beautiful in all my years listening to Heavy Metal music.
Floor Jansen is arguably the best metal singer ever in my honest opinion. Her versatility is second to none. She has great choreography phenomenal stage presence and the Fantastic ability to bring all old Nightwish songs to life! Happy listening my friend!
F
you can give Tarja the fact she was THE inspiration for this whole generation of fenomenal singers. But Floor is truly something else

The way Floor hits the high notes in part 3 is just incredible. Better than most singers in studio recordings.

💖

I am 70 years old. This is about the most beautiful song I have heard. Why do I have tears in my eyes at the end?

[ES] Han notado que la seccion Dark Passion Play termina (10:00) con el sonido de una guillotina y esta esta casi exactamente a 3 minutos de cuando dice: "I have 3 minutes and counting" (6:58) . Hermoso.
Tuomas is a genious musician.
Y Toumas lo grafica con gran claridad.

A masterpiece.....and Floor's vocals....gives me shivers!
Find me another singer with the range, variety and power that Floor has. There is no one. She is one of a kind.
Oz Osgood I was thinking exactly the same when I saw them first time couple moths back
Really? While I dislike the whole Floor/Tarja thing I reckon Tarja had the upper hand in that department. A natural actress as well as singer. And I wouldn't leave Anette out of it either.
Floors stage presence is pure perfection and you can't beat that!
The last part I just start thinking of my mother. Kinda hits me hard emotionally. Makes me wish I was a better person for her.
Holy frack. I can stop looking now. This is the best song, best band, best setting ever. I can die happy now...
The range and power in her voice is inxredible
At 11:53 when Floor sings the line 'All you need is to feel my love' notice that for 1 second she looks as if a mother would indeed say that to her child. You can see weakness in her eyes , joy , innocence, peace , love . Maybe she is thinking of her daughter when she sings that. Makes this performance even more epic, small moments like that. We are so lucky , massive respect and gratitude. Thank you Nightwish.

@@jounipesonen3569 I will, thanks

@@ManinManchester
I agree with you. If bands don't tour they don't make any money. So lucky for us we will still be able to continue to see them live.
Such an amazing analysis you did here. And yes, Toumas is a genius. Period.

That "Thank you" at the end was soo sad!
Floor wat ben jij een geweldig zangeres, een echte aanwinst voor Nightwish.
Floor really has a heavenly voice...mixed with the metal music this song is epic...out of this world😍
I loved when Annette sang this, use to play this on repeat. But Floor. My goddess. The Pacific had me in tears.
Tuomas is a freakin Mastermind.
he could write epic music scores for movies
@@SamuraiTacos1 I would give so much to see him collaborate with Howard Shore. The worlds wouldn't even be able to stand up against such epicness...
he is The MAESTRO.. what a genius..
