I have this dongle, it catches our home wifi better than internal adapter in my ol' Lenovo (I think there's some antenna issues), and it works in Arch btw. Maybe the speed is not great, but it was the cheapest way to reconnect the laptop wire-less, so I think it's fine.

Good to know that cheap parts are not performing that well! :D
    Thanks for the video!

The website says it goes up to wifi 3 ( that is g) which came out in 2003.
If you are considering an adapter seriusly, first make sure the model supports the standard you want (7 is newest which is be, but most places are at WiFi 6 or ax. Check the Wikipedia entry for WiFi to see all versions). You have to make sure your current home router and wherever you go does support the new versions though, you can check by googling router models or by going to the settings of your capable device. Task manager makes it easy.
Next is portability v strength. Having a lot of big antennas should help with performance but for a laptop it is not as practical. All that is subjective.
Alternatively get a WiFi card in your pc. Laptops have small removable ones too, but some models don't. I would suggest intel for ease of finding drivers.
Speaking of which make sure to wondload drivers using ethernet (dongle if no ports on laptop) or another device. This is usually cheaper, takes up less space etc so it is what I would personally do (and did with my laptop)

might get better out of it with better wifi drivers, perhaps changing router to small packets instead of large (easier for older for older or cheaper devices), Could janky rigg it with a cheap usb fan near it to provide better air flow.
With tuning (and playing with placement tricks) you may be able to get more out of it. It should be able to handle 1080p streams (6 mb per so up to 3 on paper if the device its on can handle it lol)
And almost enough for a 4k youtube video (need about 3 or 4 mb more to do one (youtube video not stream, need more for that depending upon viewers) Could be interesting to play with that concept and see what happens.
But yeah buyer beware with that stuff even if it works. And keep a eye on it when its in use lol.
There's some weird stuff with wifi adapters (i've got a travel N spec adapter which according to its box claims to be able to host its on wifi spot AND with a SD card slot too), despite plugging into usb 2.0 lol
I've also got a 802.11ac (which might be a chinese knockoff of a sony, claims to be that brand), but it has usb 2.0 (which means its limited to 480 mb/sec at absolute best if it'll even hit that lol. Though that's also reliant upon how well the usb 2.0 chipset can perform lol)
I'm not too fussy though as long as its decently stable and works
Just saying for that particular adapter you could test that (can probably get a simple usb fan (that simply plugs in and rotates around the plug) from the dollar store. Can also that usb wifi chipset also doubles as a tiny space heater lol. Could get a laser heat measuring gun (great for testing whatever you can point it at) for real readings on heat of various things

Yeah getting a little USB fan would be really funny. I'm sure I can find a use for that wifi adapter but I would have to figure out how to get it to stop disconnecting from the wifi every 10 mins. I'm pretty sure it could be caused by overheating or a driver issue honestly like you said.

@@NomadByte The fan may do the trick. Small packet option in the router may do the trick, it works for a old tablet i have.
And just saying a means to organize, test, and look at pcs. Even if its empty or dirty or missing parts it may still work. Easy enough to toss it in a dumpster or put it on a curb if it proves to be completely useless (after stripping down any parts that may or may not be useful later)
And i was talking about tvs or monitors that may not appear to be broken but can prove themselfs to be beyond repair.
though with that you can also in theory save the stands off them (as well as any cables they come with)
I don't have space myself for more tvs (its practical to have some backups to a point though)
If it looks like something exploded in it or like it got hit with a ball or something its a pass (save for cables attached and if it has a remote with it), Same with cracks. Scratches may or may not just be cosmetic though)
also HWinfo may well be of use, as it can show a device's true id and aid in tracking down a driver for the actual chipset. Which could be important for no name chinese stuff.
I have a usb 3.0 to nvme enclosure i need to try that with and see if i can get it to work (doesn't show up properly on my PC despite claiming to be plug n play)
And just saying those are potential sources/methods you can try for free (save for the cost of gas)

Yeah I have actually picked up a Tv off the side of the road one time for free. It's an old 1080p one but it's got a very thin black line running though it. Other than that it functions. Also I do know about HWinfo but I for some reason didn't think to use it. I'll try that out.

@@NomadByte yeah that's a defect/damage, nothing you can do about that.
And the hardware id it will give you will help you find the real chipset of the device
