    I’m a resident of Kansas and love seeing the spots he charges at. I like the enthusiasm he has on these trips. Plus he is way more brave than I am with my EV so far. He will jump in a car with 15% charge, a destination at 250 miles away, and announce, “ I’ll make it with -78% battery life when I get there. It will be just fine!” Lol

    @out of spec motoring I bought my wife an ID.4 Pro last week. We will be road tripping from metro Detroit to Louisville for July 4th. We decided to give a local Electrify America station a try tonight so that we aren't charging newbies on the road trip, and we ran into a guy who works in marketing for VW charging up his Pro S. He knows you! We had a little chat about your experiences with the Pro on this trip. When we got to the EA station there was a Mach E, a Taycan, and his Pro S. We took the last spot with our VW.

    Just did a 467 mile trip today from Tampa to Atlanta in a Tesla Model Y and the trip was flawless with AP and the Tesla supercharging network is just brilliant! These long-road-trip videos in BEVs are invaluable to many of us, Kyle. Thanks for doing them, and please keep doing them as the public-charging infrastructure slowly builds out and becomes more reliable. My experience is owning two PHEVs but am eagerly looking forward to getting my first BEV, though I do a lot of long-distance, cross-country road trips to see family each year. I hope that the charging companies (like EA) and the non-Tesla automakers are watching your videos, also -- because they should be. I like all the charging details that you go through when stopped at a charging station; it's very educational. But I fear that the average person isn't going to be able to navigate the poor public-charging infrastructure as it now stands: it really takes somebody that's really into BEVs to do trips like this, and somebody with patience (and if there are any passengers, those passengers need to be like-minded!). Very few of my family members would put up with all this on a trip with me -- the uncertainty, the unreliability, the having to drive to empty parking lots in dicey areas after dark, etc.

    Middle Tennessee has been heavily developed with charging stations for nearly 15 years. Nissan has a massive factory there, and did much of their Leaf testing in the area. Those people who iced out that charging station knew exactly what they were doing. Still, it was nice of you to give them the benefit of the doubt.

      You're not wrong, but it will get better. The question is can you power through for 2-3 years until it happens with a Ford F150 Lightning? Also note that the charge curve on the MachE is terrible per one of his other videos so you also want to make sure the F150 doesn't have the same problem. Finally, as he mentioned, there is no free market answer to better charging networks today so it might not happen in 2-3 years.

      @nihongobenkyoshimasu3190 3 роки тому +17

      I agree with you, charging with a Tesla is so simple. In the case of this road trip from Florida To Colorado, with Tesla you just enter the final destination and the display will show you the full itinerary with all the superchargers where you will have to stop.
      In comparison the VW interior display map is not directly connected to the Electrify America network. I wish this video was showing how to use the navigation to go from charger to charger. I honestly didn't learn anything new on how to use the VW navigation with this video. A lot of talk but no real explanations on using the navigation. When using the VW ID.4 on a trip I had to use some Apps on my phone like 'A Better Route Planner' or 'Electrify America' to plan my trip.
      The ID.4 navigation display is not very useful, I felt using an old flip phone, in comparison the Tesla navigation display is like using an iPhone or an iMac. I hope that VW will improve the display, so far I prefer using Google Map on my phone when driving an ID.4.

Model 3 gets more like 4 miles per kWh real world. If I charge at home I've calculated my model Y costs me about 6$ for every three hours of hiway driving. Supercharging is closer to gas for sure but 95% of my charging happens at home. It's very user specific. Pros and cons to both. I also learned an amazing fact today. It takes between 5 and 12 kWh or electricity to refine one gallon of fuel so when you start to think about how far you ev would drive just on the power that it takes to refine gas it kinda makes you think. A couple of points: The EA chargers actually have two NFC antennas. One for use with GooglePay or an NFC credit card, and a second one that is *only* for use with the app. On some models of charger, the app pad is beneath the credit card reader, and if you are tall, the thing is barely visible. Ideally that second pad would be up closer to the video screen. If you have the ID.4 plan in your EA app and you touch the wrong NFC pad (the one on the credit card reader), your phone will call up Google Pay and not the EA app.
    The other day I was at an EA station in Philly - of the 8 stations, 5 were in use (two ID.4, one Mach-E, one etron, and one Bolt). The etron was driven by a field service tech for ABB who was repairing one of the chargers. That's the busiest I have ever seen.
    I have a theory that when the charger drops to 30kW or thereabouts, that the underlying problem is that the cable cooling has failed, and it falls back to a much lower power level. Not that this info actually helps you very much - for the end user, switching to a different cabinet is your best option.
