Sorry for the delay on the posting of this one but what a trip! The iX still leaves the impression of incredible comfort, sound system, driver assistance, range / effeciency, and more. The charging infrastructure, well, even after some of the new units going in I’m not sure we are much better off than 12 weeks ago here
I’d say we’re in about the same spot or maybe even worse 😬
I just got the new 11-22 software update from BMW. All sorts f improvements, including new ambient lighting options, better battery pre-conditioning and for those with the correct infrastructure Parking Assistance Professional, which gives you the ability to do pre-programmed parking recordings and remote parking assistance to get your car out of those tight parking spaces.
The new chargers cables seem to have really poor QC, I’ve seen the exact cable release not latching about 4 station and one of which seems to fail every 2 weeks. The failing part is a $3 part for locking.
Dont worry Kyle. 5 stars content as always !
If you had to pick between the two, Rivian R1S or BMW iX 50?
I love how you always start with how you are on a time crunch and then you sit there forever, not driving, just talking...
;)
Glad the road trip videos are back! Favorite content you make!
Kyle with the ice and snow we’ve been having, this 95 deg day driving vlog is just what we needed.
Hope Kyle, Alyssa and the rest of the team have a great Christmas! Keep on producing great free content!
Thank you for the Road Trip videos!
Best wishes for 2023 to you and your family!
Seriously I'd be fighting to be copilot for every road trip testing. Love watching these and learn so much from them. Thanks Kyle. Appreciate your information and the effort you put into these videos.
The front end is beautiful and futuristic. The self healing material is amazing and makes so much sense for rock chips. People just aren't ready for the futuristic design yet. I believe this grill will age well and the car will continue to look modern even 10 years from now. My main gripe about the iX is that I wish there was a button on the steering wheel to toggle on/off the B mode (regenerative braking).
Hey Brandon, I’m with you and like the new front end, it just took a while and the rest of the car is also great. BMW have continued with an experimental mindset I feel, pushing the envelope having done such an amazing job with the i3. I’m about to buy my wife a 42 kWh version and when I sell my little enterprise in a few years time (I’m 64), I think I’ll buy myself an iX. I reckon it will drop in value very fast due to peoples dislike of the front end and that’ll just make it cheaper to buy secondhand. Lastly, the vertical kidney grill is a throwback to the 1920s and 30s. Cheers Geoff
Kyle, never stop making such videos. I love road trips, but I hardly ever get to take them. So these videos are my windows to road trips. Please keep making them, and the longer the video, the better !
The way you explain not just stuff about cars, but things like going to butt something at the store is always great to hear. You have a great enthusiasm about you. Two things: 1) have you ever done a trip to Canada? Explore the charging infrastructure there? 2) You should have a channel Out Of Spec Lifestyle where you give reviews on everyday things, products and services in everyday life. It would be awesome!
Really? He just sounds like Karen half the time. Jumping from one basic bitch stop to the next.
Great upload Kyle love your road trip videos n keeps up the great content
Can’t believe how calm you are, I’ve seen a lot of people super stressed out about waiting to charge. In the UK it’s probably going to take at least 30 years before the network is up to scratch 😆😖. Great video.🙌
Always great info and great content. Picking up a new edition X LR this Sat with 10,000kms s/c bonus miles. Ripe for epic roadtrips this summer!
I have my IX 50 for 1 year now and i love it. Love what you do 👌🏻 greetings from Quebec
I think this is how you review a car, actually driving and getting to know the car. Thanks for the great video.
Hey Kyle, I’m in the U.K. so your shows hold no practical benefits for me, but I really love these long journeys and listening to your experiences and comments. Looking forward to hearing more from your CES attendance too. Many thanks Geoff
Great video as always, Kyle. Your real life EV experiences are very helpful and I can confirm your experiences with the charging infrastructure. EA seems to get worse with every road trip. When I picked up my Taycan Cross Turismo in fall 2021 and drove it from the LA dealership back home in the Seattle area, the biggest issue was that maybe 1 of 4 or 2 of 6 EV chargers at a particular station wouldn’t work. During my recent thanksgiving trip to the San Francisco Bay Area, it often had only one or two working chargers per station and twice the entire station was dead, which forced me to go backwards to reach a 50 kWh charger just to make it. The entire trip was along major highways (mostly I-5). This really comprises the otherwise positive experience with the amazing Taycan and needs to be fixed. Hopefully more fast charging offerings will come soon, as I don’t feel EA will fix their problems unless there is stronger competition.
Great look back in time... "this new hardware could be the key to reliability" HA! wish that statement aged better over the last couple months.
$113k is reasonable?
drove an i4 m50. definitely was incredible, just the price and infrastructure where we are make it a non-starter.
Love your road trip videos. Can't wait for the return trip video.

The problem with EA is that the only reason they exist is a punishment for VW. Nothing pushes them to make it better or upgrade or continue to add chargers.
Yes cause they definitely haven't upgraded at all in 4 years haha. You see he never goes to other networks 😂
Sponsored
@@marcusrose5943they have upgraded and they’re still shit. Tired of the excuses for EA’s absolute shit equipment.
I think it just shows you just how much vw really doesn’t care much about ev’s. If they really wanted to push EV’s they should have also provided a kick ass charging network to compete with Tesla’s, but they chose not to.
@@bertveilleux1701well they’re going bankrupt so there’s that. 😳
I’m really hoping EA comes through with better chargers. I have only been in a situation with them once in Jackson TN. Fortunately I have family there and was able to trickle charge and I knew there were some level 2 chargers…not ideal but it worked out. Also I have the IX 50 and it’s a beast when it comes to range. I love it
This is the only thing I can watch for so long
Drove the iX 50 at a BMW event here in Vegas. Very impressive vehicle. Good news that the range is under estimated.
Nice, it is a lovely BEV and great range for such a beast!
The BMW I3 is the most hated ev currently. The BMW ix is just a larger version of the same technology. But its awesome when its for Free, Kyle got the taste of bmw bucks
100 degrees with your trademark hoodie. Cracks me up.
Kyle you are just like me, I get A-D-D when I see classic cars, I'll interrupt a conversation and be like WOW a ..... hahaha
I want to compliment you and your videos. Very positive and cheerful despite migraines, I can’t imagine… and your travel music is pleasant. I’ve ordered a Bolt after watching many videos. Since you’ve test driven them all are any worth twice the price? What I want is reasonable comfort with long term reliability. I plan 99% driving around town. Looks like you’re in NJ my home state but now I’m in NC. I plan to use the GM 240 installation so I can keep it charged up at home and occasionally drive to Charlotte 100 miles away and hope to charge up at the Hyatt hotel to minimize range anxiety. Keep up the good work!
Kyle is a super cool guy! 😎👍
Some very interesting bits in this video. The Tesla driver in Cedar City is absolutely "a look into the future of EV ownership" -- how many times have you watched other folks in any grocery store or other store, and noticed how many people truly have trouble operating the payment terminals? How long have we had those -- 20 years, now? And if people still have trouble every time they use those terminals, it will wind being so much worse when they wind up driving electric vehicles.
Then at the Las Vegas Outlets -- "Just when will someone build an EV charging station with actual management for vehicles waiting in line?" Without any kind of line management, you KNOW that there will be people who will jump into the next spot that opens up, going ahead of cars that have been waiting far longer. "And then the fist-fights will start happening." Whatever, but it boils down to how "your charging experience" will become far less about how fast your car or how fast the charger can get the job done -- it will be about "the behavior of human beings at those chargers," while you wait in line to even get to a charger. Yes, expect people to charge to 100%. Yes, expect people to walk away and leave their vehicles there for hours. And so on. Of course, we see that now -- I just expect that we'll see far more of it as electric vehicle ownership becomes "mainstream."
So, will a time come when we will have "EV charging station attendants?" There will always be some sense of "you don't have to spend more money for infrastructure, if you can simply use the existing infrastructure more efficiently."
Great road trip car for adventurers who enjoy that life is challenging and want to work their way through and around less than perfect situations.
I’m unclear on why there isn’t more outrage toward the charging infrastructure and the companies that make these ‘stations’ - if I’d just paid $120k for a car and couldn’t charge it immediately because 50% of the chargers aren’t working, I’d be more than a little upset. Non Teslas are great for around town when you can home charge. Still, Kyle you are more honest about it, but too many of the car UA-camrs don’t built in enough of a difference to the Tesla charging infrastructure - with the recent price drops I finally ditched my two ordered cars and am getting a Model Y (this month or early next after ordering this week). Videos like this are making me very, very happy with that decision. You just don’t hear about this with Teslas making them much more functional (and therefore fun/rewarding to drive). $120k and you can’t charge it or have to wait for the driver in front to finish? Come on!
I enjoyed this very much. I do the Vega - San Diego (Carlsbad) 2 times a month and always stop at Baker both ways. There always seems to be one charge that doesn't work, but so many never a problem (except when CA had power problems - only one had power and charge limited to 20 minutes). It was interesting your power consumption from Baker-San Diego (I have an iX50, 22" wheels) and best was 3.4 kW/Mi (cruse set at 75MPH, perfect day), normal is 3.0. About half the time I have a Tesla drive come up and ask about iX. Have had 3 Tesla's, first one of first S and agree the quality has so much better-do miss Supper Chargers.
I’ve lived with migraines my entire life, popping excedrin like there’s no tomorrow. About a year ago I got prescribed sumatriptain and my god what a life changer.
Love it ❤❤❤❤❤
I used to get headaches I solved it by drinking lots of extra water every hour. I set a reminder on my phone to go off every hour to remind me to drink some water. I also will get headaches when I'm fighting a virus such as a cold or a flu and I discovered if I'd take a lot of garlic usually goes away. Capsules garlic oil.
I'm not into EVs.. but Kyle makes the journey fun. More road trip videos please!
For God's sake Kyle, clean the windshield once in a while....otherwise, great video! Love it!
You went to San Diego, during the weekend, that the edge of Hurricane Sandy rolled through there!
I was told that B mode and regen in general is not good for efficiency and long road trips. But is great when using in city.
I was at the Baker station last month on a trip to Vegas and the EA station was a ghost town. Saw a single ID.4 there and it was long gone by the time my Model 3 was sufficiently charged.
Kyle, please add to your list of road trip necessities, .... paper towels and Windex! 😉
Thanks
I know this is late to leave a message but you are truly the EV charging ambassador!
Bad chargers and a sucky Golden Corral for dinner, doesn't get any worse for a charging stop. Love the road trips!! I agree on the front design, what were they thinking.
I wonder if lifting the cable during the handshake would help get charging going? Seems to help on some European ccs handles since communication is on the top and might have a bad connection when the cable pulls on it.
Thank you for commenting that the Holiday Inn needs to put in a level 2 charger. I try to make a point of staying at hotels that offer charging. Fortunately our Volt can make do with a NEMA 5-20 outlet in a pinch.
Nice video as always! You should go to a good chiropractor if you hadn't already and talk about your migraine, it's quite common a neck related problem, made a world in difference for me, rarely have it nowadays. ;-)
Good review. Love the iX but the charging situation on trips is a mess.
Road trips and a good id4 driver makes for a wonderful experience!😂
In navigation settings it is very easy to select only DC chargers and minimum charging speed
Interesting stats for the Baker charging sessions, you started with 7% and went to 75% state of charge adding roughly 83kWh. If my math checks out, it would be 68% that you added 68%=83 then 100%=122kWh. BMW lists the battery size with 111.5kWh. Either there was a huge loss in power delivery, EA calculated it wrong or BMW has a bigger battery than advertised.
I test drove an i50 and liked it. I like the 4 wheel steering. A Chevy Bolt probably would have gotten 3.5 miles per kilowatt if it hade been 75 degrees--having driven one for three years. I love the iX but it sounds like one will spend more on charging it--even at level 2 in one's own garage.
Just picked up a used 2023 IX xdrive50 w/ 4950 miles, loaded with all options less the b&w sound system. It was a steal for 69K. I charged it to 100% just to see how many miles it show available. I was shocked when it said 368!! 😮 I wish I could attach the screenshot I took! Range Monster!!
Hey Kyle great vid. What blue tooth mix setup do you use. Inspired me to do some over here in the UK.
When charging infrastructure is no longer vlog content, we will be “there”. In the meantime, 90% or more of our driving is local and done in a wonderful home charged BMW i3. The Volvo v60 is standby for road trips and 2nd car needs.
@Kyle
Love the music. Can you post any information relating to it?
Well at least you were charging even if it was only at 95kW at Grand Junction, better than having none of the chargers working there. This is interesting as Tritium is also having issues with their hardware the most reliable Tritium units are the 50kW Veefil units but even they are not great. One of our local charging providers has started to put in Kempower units from Finland, have yet to use one but looking forward to trying it out.
Just goes to proving that when it comes to electric cars and road tripping, there is Tesla and there is everyone else. I've driven my Model S for 100,000 mi all along the eastern seaboard and don't remember a single instance when I had an issue charging on the road.
I road trip my MYP. The supercharger network is incredible. Lots of chargers, none broken, plug and charge. I have a Rivian on order. I worry about road tripping it. Will have to keep my MYP for those trips, even though I'm kinda buying the Rivian for road trips. Sad. Tesla's lead on charging is so far ahead, non Tesla car buyers have no clue what charging is supposed to be like.
Lol…..
This dude said infrastructure problems, not car problems
@@cipi055994yet when planing his route to San Diego the Bimmer didn’t give him the charging stops he was looking for and ran slowly.
I hear you I just feel like I wish Tesla owners would not keep restating this , it’s doesn’t add much to the discussion at this point.
Hi Kyle, I really enjoy watching the channel and the content is great! ............Just wanted to say that I too suffered from regular MIGRAINE attacks, but since taking 400mg of Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) and 400MG of Magnesium citrate daily, as suggested by the National Migraine Centre in London I've been Migraine free for nearly a year! Hope it helps you too!
Hi, very detailed review👍 Are the standart led headlights adaptive?
No crap, how did you get one from NJ? NJ does have some rare cars. I am amazed when I drive around what I see here.
Welcome to warm San Diego.
watching you road trip ccs cars is so stressful. makes me appreciate just how great the tesla charging network is.. I don't stress at all.
Makes me appreciate my PHEV. I can road trip with 3 min stops for fuel. EV use for commuting. Best of both worlds.
I'd rather have a charging network that needs some improvement than a piece of crap tin can junk Tesla MAGA-mobile go-cart with half a steering wheel. I can't wait for my BMW iX to arrive. You can keep your supercharging network, I'll never need it.
@@mowcowbell yes right up to that oil change or when maintenance costs go up due to the costs of maintaining an engine. If you really need to road trip with a fuel car it's better to just hire one.
@@darmou Your use of 'hire a car' indicates you are in Europe. You can't apply European maintenance costs to the US. I do once a year oil changes that cost $35. Gasoline costs $2.55/gallon in my area. Hardly an expense to be overly concerned about. The ability to completely avoid the chances of being unable to charge on the road well exceeds that.
@@mowcowbell I live in the US but I've never owned a fuel car only an electric one. My understanding is you need an oil change every 3000 miles.
12:52 I'm sure you've tried a million and a half things already, but I found that my biggest trigger is sodium nitrate. Took me F O R E V E R to figure out and seems uncommon, so I figured I'd mention it.
I’ve got a fun game… EA and other charging companies send techs in electric vehicles (I know many do already), but here’s the kicker… they fast charge the vehicle to have just enough power to get there so it make sure the tech can’t leave until it’s fixed so they can charge lol….
I’m sure that’s somehow illegal, but you’d have a lot more happy customers.
This video illustrates that the issues with adopting an EV lie not with the vehicle, but with the charging infrastructure, and behind that the ability of the electrical grid to deliver adequate energy if in fact EV adoption were to become more widespread.
I miss the charging stats overlay at every stop you used to do on older tesla roadtrips. Including travel time, and miles, charging time and kwh added.
Anyone else wonder why you don't see windshield squeegees at chargers?
Nice review, how’s the copilot in ix compare to eqs?
Just an advice...clean your windshield while charging.... Good info from video.
The front end looks awesome. No problems there. The front license plate makes it look bad tho
Migraine guy here as well - pretty damn awful when it happens - Have found a great pill as well that works (took me years)
As much as i like these bmws, im so glad i got a tesla with the supercharger network. Never seen a bad one.
I don’t know if you’ve done this, but I’ve got a hybrid, gas and electric car and I was wondering if you could do a long range test between the hybrid and the high Hyundai ionic five fully charged and I was just wondering how far the range between the hybrid versus the Hyundai ionic five
From fully charged to empty
Kyle, get Maxalt from your doc for your migraines. It’s life changing.
@ 20:15. Several times while charging at EA 150kw I have experienced Rapid fluctuations of 40kw to 140kw and back to 40kw and continuing for up to 5 minutes which seemed violent at the time. My Ionic5 was repurchased for being over the 30 day threshold for a parts hold of an INTEGRATED CHARGE CONTROL UNIT and fuse. HMMMM
i love watching yours video's but i think you need to clean the windshield more often.
The charging infrastructure issues are preventing me from going EV. Hope this is resolved in the near future.
Hi Kyle, big fan of your videos. Do you do drive away jobs?
I had big migraines as well! Try to drink more water and maybe even add a spoon full of apple cider vinegar to your water ;)
So what would one do if you got somewhere with not enough range to the next charger and this current charger is not working. If there are no level 2 chargers are you going to beg someone for a level 1 plug. Are there any videos of getting stuck on your road trips?
Yes Kyle. BMW sadly diluted the M badge. As a BMW E36 M3 owner, M meant more earlier.
When the charger isn’t working, how does the community resist not just leaving it laying on the ground? What’s the point of putting it back if it’s not working?
Not sure what's up with the EA app. I've noticed that the "last time used" is totally inaccurate. I was watching a site I use and it showed 2 in use. Later it showed "last used" 3 days ago. The following day they showed 4 days ago? Really makes you wonder about EA's network reporting.
Sü per 💯💯💯💯💯💯.
How can everyone else be so bad for charging and Tesla so good?
All you need is a Tesla account. This makes the chargers simpler, because no payment terminals needed and the handshake is easier too. Even in Europe where plenty of superchargers are open to other brands, these non Teslas charge better than most other networks. Except Fastned. Those guys have an uptime of 99%
Curious why EA (and others) don’t seem to have some sort of remote telemetry and automated self diagnostics? If they have an automated system checking the status and available output on a regular schedule that reports back to a central command center, they could dispatch repair teams faster when needed. Or, does something like this already exist….but they just don’t do it right.
It’s very strange how much EA stations feel like they were built 20 years ago when it comes to telematics and responsiveness.
Please please please do an almost same length road trip with the eqs suv Kyle

Is there a follow up road trip now that 9 months have passed. Is EA grid any better?
I really like the IX and would really consider it as a Model X alternative and save a little on the purchase price BUT…I just can’t stand the thought of charging inconsistency. Tesla just makes travel so easy so I guess we will just stick with our MY.
You COULD have said stick with my my. Your partner would have understood😉
Hi I’m getting a tesla s plaid very soon , RHD I’m in the UK
Always love the road trip videos. If the charging network were better I would get this vehicle. I had two BMW i3's in a row years ago ... and now for the last 3 I have two Tesla's in the household but my god the build quality of the Tesla's is garbage and the interior is absolute trash. -- I can't wait to get back into a BMW. So exciting to see the range on this vehicle is so high. Thank you Kyle! Looking forward to the return trip.
Hey Harry, I just switched to a Q4 from our i3, it lacks the range and performance of Tesla but the build quality and interior are sooo much better.
@@Marker-er3ro Oh yeah, I've sat in a Q4 ... gorgeous. Nice pick Marker!
