    When I started writing songs, I didn't really have anyone to walk me through it. Everything I had to learn was through trial and error, try writing a song This Way, see if it works. In this video, I walked through the five things I wish I knew as a beginning song writer 10 years ago. Hopefully my experiences will help you overcome some of the struggles you're having right now as a songwriter.

      @@kaioking hey man! I should’ve clarified huh? In my use case I used it for voice over work. I did a few audiobooks and explainers with it. I would definitely reach for the icon over the sm7b for spoken word. But for music, I’d probably look at the ethos knowing what I now know about the sm7b. If you pair it with a preamp that can feed it enough gain, then I think it would be great. I unfortunately only have the Avalon 737 and that doesn’t even give it enough gain 🤦🏽‍♂️. My buddy uses it for music to reduce the room noise in his untreated space, and it works good for that, and with the country/rock he does, his vocals sit really good in the mix even before mixing the vocals.

    The SM58 is what I’d recommend, starting out. It’s too close in sound for comfort at a fraction of the cost. And even with the A55M mount and the A58WS windshield, the price is so far below the SM7B, that you can actually afford a decent audio interface, which will be useful later on, when you get higher up the food chain of microphones. And if you take into consideration, that the capsule of the SM7B is about 5cm / 2 inches away from the foam, you don’t have to get as close to the SM58 for the same proximity effect, which makes the microphone more comfortable to use, on top of it being much lighter than the chunky SM7B.

    • @thatcet
      @thatcet 7 місяців тому

      Big disagree. The SM58 has not a lot of bass, and is too sharp in the tops. I know that because i held it in hand on a real stage with a real PA system, and something like the SE V7 sounded way more neutral than the sm58. Altough, sound is subjective.

    If your starting out: yeas it’s a nice mic, but as soon as you start recording higher quality vocals the sm 7b won’t be enough anymore. It doesn’t have a lot of highend which makes whisper vocals or highly dynamic vocals sound like shit. So if your starting out go for it, but as soon as your getting serious get a nice condenser from Neumann for example

I am not a fan of saying the people don't care so use shit gear, I be like I want to be happy myself with the sound, because if I am I can be sure that others will also love it. Some ACTUAL advice: If you're just starting out, you're perfectly fine spending $100 for a microphone instead. There are some inexpensive interfaces you can get that can provide enough gain in the preamps for any microphone you choose to use.
    Recommendation: Elgato Wave DX + Elgato Wave XLR. Throw in a mic arm and the Stream Deck + (for the knob controls) and you're still spending around the same as just the Shure SM7B.

    • @TheVelvetYear
      @TheVelvetYear  Рік тому +1

      a problem you're gonna have with the "i'm gonna buy the cheapest version of what i need" is that you're gonna grow out of it almost immediately and need to upgrade sooner than if you had just saved up for a couple more months and bought the quality version in the first place. you're gonna struggle with noise floor issues and getting the brightness out of a vocal in the mixing phase only to realize it's because you cheaped out on your gear, and that you'll need to buy it plus whatever you spent on the cheaper setup (cause no one wants to buy a used $100 mic)

    • @or10nsharkfin
      @or10nsharkfin Рік тому

      @@TheVelvetYear $100 isn't even the cheapest; you're kind of playing into the fallacy that $100 microphones = bad. The RODE Podmic is held up as one of the best budget microphones for content creators and it sits at $100. You pair it with a solid interface, like a GoXLR Mini or an Elgato Wave XLR, you're saving almost $150 when compared to the Shure SM7B and you can almost perfectly replicate the sound of an SM7B with a bit of hardware EQ on those two interfaces.
      Whereas, if all you're looking to do is buy a Shure SM7B, you not only have to foot the $400 bill for it (unless it's on sale), but if you don't get the right interface you may end up paying an extra $100 just for an inline signal booster (Cloudlifter or Fethead, etc).
      The thing is, the Shure SM7B is designed for studio work. It is still great as a stand-alone microphone when used for any application, but there are still decent microphones that you can buy that don't cost as much.

    • @TheVelvetYear
      @TheVelvetYear  Рік тому +1

      @@or10nsharkfin i actually own the rode podmic. eventually had to stop using it because its noise rejection wasn't anywhere near as good as the sm7b and i was constantly having to bending it over backwards with eq to make it sound good in a music setting. being good for "content creation" isn't the same as it being good for music. they're completely different use cases.
      also if you're so adverse to spending $150 dollars, i don't think recording is the hobby for you, cause this is the cheapest it will ever be.
      also, the TC Helicon just shut down their support for the GoXLR app (look at the most recent video from Eposvox) and the second you need to do anything like the ability to plug in more than one mic, record guitar, or use studio monitors, the Wave XLR stops being useful.
      i would recommend using gear and running it through the races in a musical context before saying "that's no good, buy this instead".

    Not a big fan. It has more treble then most dynamic microphones but still less than any condenser. Very low output and a bit noisy. • @TheVelvetYear
      @TheVelvetYear  6 місяців тому

      if you how low output/noise that means either you're not using a mic booster or your preamp quality isn't powerful enough (1) that treble is needed for good mixing but you struggle to get it with regular dynamics (2) since its a large diaphragm you don't have the issue with regular dynamic mics where if someone is more than an inch away the takes become unusable with the proximity effect (3) you aren't limited to recording in a well treated space like a condenser. no one's saying there aren't other good mics out there, but that's not the same as this being a bad choice. every studio that's tracking people regularly has at least one
