  • In this video, I am comparing the Shure SM7b and the Neumann TLM 102. I ask which is better for vocal recording. These two microphones are commonly used in vocal recording and for great reason. I also use them to record some acoustic guitar.

      The rumour that Micheal Jackson used it probably helped... :) I think with a singer who doesn't love all the detail it can be a more comfortable mic to use. If i was choosing for me though I would totally go with the 102.

      @@TimMoxeyMusic No, what's help it's just the fact you can use the sm7 to track a singer in a live/studio situation, and have a good balance between quality of the main vocal and low bleed enough from the other instruments including drums so you can keep the vocal track for the final mix. Of course, in a context of a correctly treated room and re re recording, there is no point of using a SM7 instead of a condenser for a lead vocal.

      TBH Joe Rogan effect!
      (Not hating on the dude honestly it probably sucks having that much influence unintentionally.) but my observation is that his producer "Young Jaime" basically selected a decent broadcast mic and the entire world of podcasting happened where literally thousands of new to pro audio types just kinda followed suit and snagged this well priced and solid performing, (but certainly) overrated Dynamic mic from Shure.

    as a sm7b user, the sound isolation for instruments in an untreated room is unmatched. with a bit of eq the sm7b can sound very close to most condenser microphones. the key is to remove the foam windscreen and use a normal pop filter to open up the high end. the sm7b requires a little more tweaking, but for me, it’s worth it for the noise rejection of my room and computer fan.

    • @TimMoxeyMusic
      @TimMoxeyMusic  Рік тому +1

      Thats a great point. The SM7b would be a great mic for recording in an untreated room. I haven't used my SM7b without the pop filter yet. I'll have to check that out.

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers 11 місяців тому +1

      The SM7B doesn't have any sound isolation that any cardiod wouldn't. That is a myth propgated by deliberate miseducation regarding recording level.

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers 9 місяців тому +3

      @@Dipli Complete myth. Submit a citation to your claims. (So I can dismantle them).
      Polar pattern and frequency response are the only things that affect the "ability" of a mic to isolate room reflections or ambient sound. The SM7B is actually worse than many other microphones at isolating ambient noise. By design you are forced farther away from the physical mic capsule, the noise floor of the mic internals is much higher than many cheaper microphones, especially condensers. And the gain that many people add to the mic signal often amplifies the self noise of the mic itself, which people erroneously attribute to the preamp lmfao.

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Dipli And Shure's marketing and reviewers are continuously disproven by audio engineers.
      Shure usest the fullest extent of ambigious wording in order to implicate that technology that may have been revolutionary in the 70s is still revolutionary today. It is no longer the case. In order to see some of the concepts consolidated into an easily digestible video format, see Julian Krause's Audio Myth / Science playlist.
      Stating that a dynamic microphones inherent low frequency requires the user to be closer to the microphone while implicating its an intrinsic feature of the SM7B is misleading.
      You are also able to do the same thing with other microphone types, barring perhaps earlier ribbon microphones in which a disc style pop filter was primarily used to protect the internals of the microphone through distance and distribution of air and blocking moisture.
      Condensers also come in multiple types, just just side address. There are also many microphone techniques that you can employ to decrease the proximity of the mic to the individual without creating plosives.
      According to Audio Science Review, the equivelant self noise measured in the SM7B is 22DB which is definitely above average for a microphone by a fair margin. I.E the Rode NT1 has roughly 4DB of self noise. It is also a much more even toned microphone and significantly less expensive.
      In addition to that, many microphones that have been released in the past 15-20 years have continuously improved upon transformerless designs and are relatively close to the TLM 103 in tonality and quality at a price point between 30 and 200 dollars.
      SM7B is essentially just a status piece and little else at this point. It doesn't have any particular limiting characteristics, but the points used to sell the SM7B to new users are merely manipulations of factual information to implicate the lack of availability of these features of effectiveness of these features in other microphones.

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Dipli You're the brick wall, you're preaching to your own choir. Your own lack of intuition is wherein lies your inability to understand your own logical fallacies. You are literally arguing against mathematics to state the SM7B has a low noise floor. Not a very educated take. Let me guess, you think a cloud lifter reduces the noise floor as well? You clearly don't believe in physics lmfao. You literally force yourself to believe that these fallacies are intrinsic to a characteristic of the SM7B.

      Telephony is a great description of what it sounded like when I was talking into it. The SM7b doesn't like (in my experience) being too far away from the sound source. However, in the musical example, I did try to keep an even distance from both diaphragms to give the fairest and most balanced comparison.
      I will say though when I have been working with the SM7b outside of tests and comparisons I have found it to be very mid-heavy. It's not a bad sound at all, but I have found myself pulling a bit of the mids out when I record vocals and it's really sweet. I hope that helps.

Really wish there was a better way to watch video's like this with the original audio instead of the conversion/compression coloring the sound and removing the ultra high end. Really hard to hear the air of high quality equipment when its given such harsh lossy compression

In this video (ua-cam.com/video/jKOjX9Hnzbs/v-deo.html), I record it by itself and get a different result.

Its a super nice sounding mic otherwise tho, but for me its a waste. Probably better for pure singing rather than rap/rnb modern vocals.
