The gravity over here in Europe is a lot stronger. When it rains, we all have to hide in reinforced shelters. The water drops in Blaster Master 2 are a perfect example of realism.

That's why the government issue those metal umbrellas. They might be heavy as hell, but it's better than getting your neck snapped by a light shower.

And these metal umbrellas help, especially when there is lightning. I guess that's why they are produced this company called Umbrella Corp., right ?

    • @GamesDiddley

Luckily they thought of everything. The umbrellas actually attract the lightning, storing it in a compact battery, so you can charge your phone or any usb device. I've never wanted to be struck by lightning, more than I have these days

Well Nintendo and Sonic also did a lot of shitty games. Most CoD are not bad - they are simply soulless games created on the drawing board ... and everyone is the exactly same ... every year ... just like Madden. Despite of being average, they are ok.

The music to most of these Sunsoft games are pretty awesome. Some I never heard of before; now makes me want to listen to them more so. Some of these games are worth picking up just for the music alone. Then again that's just me.

David White I might be the only one but before mp3's or any digital recorder, I used to record music from games on my walkman to play on my piano and for leisure. Especially rented. We had it rough but still managed. Kids today have it too easy now. I think I still might have a few cassettes with some recordings.

    Albert Odyssey, Legend Of Eldean.
This game warmed my heart in my childhood.
    Only gripes:
    1) TOO MANY FRIGGING RANDOM BATTLES
    2) Past the 2nd half, it can be classified as "incomplete" (Lot of unused assets/land/potential quests)
Other than that, Sunsoft is historic.

David White Actually, I tested for about, what? A few hours on stage 1? Apparently, that's enough to get me a credit on this game. :-P We all worked on this game in our homes, so I tested it at my place to make sure there no bugs on the final build of stage 1 while everyone else did their thing. I always thought this game was graphically impressive for what the GBC could do, and the flamethrower was actually pretty unique as a weapon. A good game, when all is said and done!

Perhaps someone has already mentioned this, but all the things that made the US version of Fester's Quest so bad was fixed in the EU version. Bullets pass through walls, most enemies aren't so much of a burden to defeat and with the higher gun levels the multiplying enemies dies with one shot! So anyone who really wants to love this game, or are a major Addams Family fan, get the EU version! I got it the same day as my NES and it's the one I've played the most 'til this day on that machine. ;)

Anyone who grew up in the NES era loved at least one SunSoft game. If nothing, for the amazing music (no one even cared that Batman featured none of the Danny Elfman theme). I remember getting Gremlins 2 and Rescue Rangers for Christmas in 1990. I immediately loved the Chip and Dale game, but I also beat it immediately. Good game, but I eventually fell in love with the challenge of Gremlins 2. So fun. Speaking of the former, you guys should absolutely do old school Capcom games next. Sorry, Joe. I know that's more of a Nintendo theme. But it kicks ass.

    • @GameSack

***** I'd agree with this, as I'm a huge fan of Atlus, and in it's nature is one of the publishers best known for creating obscure gems. Wonderful video guys! Blaster Master (the NES version) is still one of my all-time favorites so it was great to see you talk about that game (and the series) in such detail. You covered so many games as well and even touched on a few that I hadn't heard of before! The only game that you didn't mention that I feel deserves some love is Super Spy Hunter. While the original arcade classic is a solid game, SSH is by far the better game IMHO. It features enjoyable stages, an excellent challenge, and *outstanding* music of course! My best friend in high school and I played through both Blaster Master and Batman together. Batman was definitely a tough nut to crack, but the journey (while occasionally frustrating) was generally satisfying... and, yes, that music is awesome. Blaster Master was pretty fun, too, although I'm not quite as enamored with the game as many others are. I've never tried Journey to Silius or Gremlins 2 before, but both are on my watch list to add to my NES library... and now I really want to find the Genesis version of Batman after Joe's positive look at it.
I'm a little surprised that the Sunsoft Looney Tunes games didn't get a mention here... although opinions of these games are generally unfavorable. Death Valley Rally, Rabbit Rampage, The Marvin Missions, and Taz-Mania are all in my library (as I'm a big Looney Tunes fan). Sadly, none of the games are real standouts. They look good or even great, and they sound good, too... but the gameplay for each never really impresses. Taz-Mania gets the most play from me, mainly because of its simplicity and its humorous Taz antics. That said, you covered a TON of Sunsoft games in nearly 40 minutes!
I'm glad I stayed up late (3:30am here) to catch this episode. Thanks again for what you do!

Bonus-kun. This was a great parody of Ryu from SF- from the look, special moves, and theme song. I had no idea that Sunsoft was back on life support after all this time! I thought they were absorbed by Squaresoft never to be seen again. Hopefully Victor Ireland and company can re-release some hard to find gems or make more quality remakes in the future.

The picture quality for the NES games (at least by Joe) is amazing, or at least I think it's improved since last times. Are you using some sort of RGB to HDMI output or something?

Recording with RGB, yes. Dave recorded his NES games with s-video (which is still damn good) as it will be a while before we can afford to set him up to be able to record RGB as well.

It's not really that Sunsoft hasn't made any games since 2010, it's that you guys just haven't seen them. There is Ikki on the PS3, Shanghai 3D on the 3DS. Beyond that though, they've been doing smartphone stuff since then. They have a horror series or two plus that "Way to travel the world of OZ" (オズの国の歩き方) game plus a few others. Not exactly spectacular for console gamers but they are definitely still making stuff.

Once again, I was hoping you guys would cover a game, but didn't, and that game was Super Spy Hunter! This game was wholly developed by Sunsoft, released in Japan as Battle Formula and brought to the US as Super Spy Hunter with the license that Sunsoft had from the original Spy Hunter port. It also had incredible music like all Sunsoft games...
And you guys mentioned many times that Sunsoft games had incredible music, but never gave a proper shout out to Naoki Kodaka, who was responsible for those sweet, sweet tunes...I will be doing an episode of Retro Game Sound Test on the amazing compositions of Naoki Kodaka, because his music just rocks!

Another great episode! I actually never really knew Sunsoft by name as a kid, as the only games I played from them were Gremlins 2 on NES and Batman on Genesis (both of which I loved, though!), but I've since played a few others, and have really come to appreciate them as a company. Ufouria, in particular, was a real surprise for me, as I'm a Metroidvania fanatic and that is one DAMNED FINE Metroidvania; one of the best on the NES, right up there with Goonies II and Legacy of the Wizard.
And speaking of Metroidvanias, have you guys considered doing an "indie games" episode? I know you usually tend to focus on older games, but I've been consistently impressed by how much good stuff is being released by indie developers these days. Even just in recent memory, some of my favorite games include La-Mulana, Unepic, Freedom Planet, Shovel Knight, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Rochard, Hydra Castle Labyrinth, Corpse Party (SHAMELESS PLUG), Saira, the Knytt games, and Within a Deep Forest, almost all of which are 2D platformers or Metroidvanias that remind me of the kind of awesome stuff I played as a kid -- and a lot of recently released or upcoming indie games are looking great too, like Xeodrifter, Axiom Verge, Timespinner, Red Goddess, La-Mulana 2 and NightCry. It sometimes feels like while AAA developers are focusing on pushing hardware limits, indie developers are keeping that old-school gaming charm alive, and it would be really cool to highlight some of the best indie titles out there for people who've played all the old stuff and are looking for something new that gives them that same feeling.
The fact that three of the titles in that above list were all inspired by Knightmare II: The Maze of Galious (those being La-Mulana, Unepic and Hydra Castle Labyrinth) also got me really curious about the Knightmare series, which in turn got me really interested in MSX games (particularly the vast library of Konami titles released on the system) -- and that's another topic I don't think you guys have done yet. I mean, you've covered the X68000, so I imagine you must own at least one of the far less obscure MSX or MSX2 computer systems between the two of you, so how about it? Give us an MSX episode! I'd love to hear your take on some of its classics like the Knightmare titles, the MSX version of Castlevania, Space Manbow, Treasure of Usas, etc.
Sorry for the tangents, but I figured you guys wouldn't mind a couple requests -- and they all come from a place of enthusiasm, not entitlement, so I hope you don't take any offense!
Looking forward to the next episode.

Wyrdwad Thank You. Ufouria was a nice surprise for me also it's such a fun game. We've definitely talked about doing an episode on Indie games. I own a handful of them like Shovel Knight, which I absolutely love. Also FEZ is another one that I really enjoyed. I haven't played any of the other ones on your list but will need to play more once we decide to do Indie games. Someone was nice enough to loan us the X68000 and a ton of games. I'm hoping the same guy has an MSX because that would be a system I would like to cover with all the Konami goodness it has. Only time will tell.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 9 років тому +1

If you ever do get around to playing more indie games, I can't recommend La-Mulana, Freedom Planet and Unepic enough. La-Mulana is incredibly engaging and absolutely peppered with little details that make you really feel like an archaeologist exploring the most important ruins in human history, Freedom Planet somehow manages to be BETTER than even the old-school Sonic games, and Unepic has an unlikable protagonist and a borderline stupid story but absolutely BEAUTIFUL gameplay with lots of choices on how to approach different situations and bosses (and that's what matters most!). Those three all rank among my favorite games of all time at this point, which is not an easy list to get on, and I think you guys would really love them as well -- they seem like they'd be right up your alley.

I remember one single particular arcade in Mexico had a Spanish-translated copy of Waku Waku 7. I used to love that game!
The story has something to do with getting some macguffin that grants the obtainer one wish, so everyone's fighting to get it.
My favorite character was the Politank Z, a sort of police battle tank manned by a small man and anthropomorphic dog. When you finally got the macguffin and this magical fairy is all 'hey what's your one wish?' the dog has the misfortune of absentmindedly wishing someone would help him clean their dirty tank off after all that fighting and ends up blowing their wish and gets angrily headbutted by his partner. It was pretty cute.
