    Did you guys know Slash (from Guns N' Roses) was paid by Data East to write a song about pinball on the 1995 Slash's Snakepit album "It's 5 O'clock somewhere"? The song is called "Be the Ball" and it rocks. Slash is a huge fan of pinball and even helped design the official Guns N' Roses pinball machine which was also made by Data East!

      +billbarman Is this the same Slash that "couldn't handle this" and "told you I couldn't do this, guys" and flaked under the intense pressures of being interviewed by a cartoon Space Ghost?

    Hearing the name "Data East" always conjures great memories. I spent a lot of time playing Karate Champ in the mid and late 1980s. Side Pocket was the coolest billiards game around for awhile. Bloody Woof... errr... Wolf was one of the first TurboGrafx-16 games that my younger brother got after getting the console for Christmas in 1989. I spent lots of quarters on Data East's Lethal Weapon 3 pinball machine at my local bowling alley in the mid 1990s, and the Jurassic Park pinball machine always caught my attention.
    I've been looking to track down the Data East Arcade Classics disc, which came out for the Wii back in 2010. I'm a fan of coin-op compilations, and this disc has many of the notables on it. It's sad, though, that Karate Champ never got a re-release before Data East folded; having two analog sticks as standard on controllers would have finally done the game justice, as opposed to the awful controls that plagued the PC and NES ports of the game.
    Happy holidays to the Game Sack team, and to your families and loved ones. Thanks for providing hours of entertainment this past year. I'm looking forward to seeing what 2015 brings.

      They should make" Bad Dudes & Two Crude: The Ultimate Team". I'd back it!

    • @FoxMan_FF
      @FoxMan_FF 10 років тому +1

      It's a shame that Paon doesn't own the rights to Bad Dudes. A vast majority of Data East's IPs got bought by some mobile phone company, Bad Dudes being one of them. They also got Joe and Mac too, which means we can kiss the thought of an HD Joe and Mac remake goodbye. :C
      They did get Glory of Heracles, though. Now it's technically a co-Nintendo IP.

    Anytime I was in an arcade, back in the day, if I found a Data East cabinet, I knew I was in for some fun. Captain America and The Avengers, Karnov, Robocop, Bad Dudes, Joe&Mac, The Amazing Spiderman and many others I put many a quarter into. Just like with Capcom or Konami, Data East made some solid arcade titles. Great coverage guys. I hope you do more of these vids on Sega, Capcom, Konami, Irem, Technosoft, etc.

      Bad Dudes was pretty lame. I'd take 2 Crude Dudes over Bad Dudes 363 days out of the year. I play Bad Dudes 2 days out of the year just to remember how crappy it is.
      Hell, I'd rather play Karnov than Bad Dudes, and I hate Karnov.
      So, the moral of the story is I hate myself, but I hate Bad Dudes more.

    One thing I appreciate with each episode is that you put a lot of time and effort into them. This episode is 30 minutes long and I think there were a few that are up to 40. That's a lot in UA-cam time span lol. So that's awesome.

      ***** Nintendo was very strict on the religious iconography, things had a habit of slipping through though. Chances are the devs were able to convince Nintendo that they weren't the KKK. Especially since you could make the argument that they are stereotypical ghosts.

    I sense this could mean you guys will make episodes dedicated to other 3rd party developer companies, like Capcom, Konami, Toaplan, etc? That actually would be really awesome.

    • @tetrisdave
      @tetrisdave 10 років тому +28

      Yes we will be doing other companies in the future. Fun times ahead.

    • @hairymannnn
      @hairymannnn 10 років тому +2

      I'm definitely looking forward to that! If there's something I ought to mention with Toaplan, the majority of the games they released were shmups like Fire Shark, Out Zone, Dogyuun, etc., and when the company started to die out, the remnant employees formed Cave which was the 3rd party developer that made the more famous bullet-hell shmup genre with games like DonPachi, DoDonPachi, Mushihimesama, etc. Since you guys like shmups, I have a feeling you'd enjoy doing that one if you ever get around to that.

    I love this. One of your most creative and thought out episodes yet! It's not often Data East gets mentioned these days, so it's cool seeing an episode like this. I'll also add, Data East is the creator of that Road Avenger LaserDisc game you guys love a lot.
    Fun fact: Did you know that Data East's NES home ports were actually done by SAS Sakata?
    I'm surprised you mentioned a few games in passing without going into them. Bump 'n Jump is most notable to me, particularly the very well done NES remake (published by Vic Tokai in the US, also called Buggy Popper in Japan). I also know you guys are not into the pre-NES consoles, but there are a number of worthwhile games. Even if they are simple arcade-like games, many are worth taking a quick look at on the Atari 2600, Intellivision, ColecoVision and others, including those by Data East.
    Here are some other games you might wanna check out:
    B-Wings/Battle Wings - Arcade, Famicom
    Donald Land - Famicom
    BreakThru - Arcade, NES
    Cobra Command - LaserDisc Arcade, Sega CD
    Cobra Command - Arcade, NES
    Mission X - Arcade, Intellivision
    Super BurgerTime - Arcade
    BurgerTime - Atari 2600, Intellivision, ColecoVision
    Lock 'n Chase - Atari 2600, Intellivision
    Werewolf: The Last Warrior - NES
    Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory - Arcade
    Explorer - Arcade
    Disco No. 1 - Arcade

    Boogie Wings is a true classic, I remember being floored at how fun and inventive it was after hearing about it on Left in the Arcade. The vehicle switching and grabbing stuff with the plane's hook are both mechanics that could have been a game in themselves, but Data East really went the extra mile. In fact, it almost feels like there's TOO MUCH content in the game sometimes but that's what keeps me playing it to this day.

    BurgerTime is one of my favorite games of all time! I think I first played it on an Intellivision and I immediately loved it. I wish a company like Atari would make a microconsole with an emphasis republishing new versions of older arcade games like Burger Time, Bump N Jump, Toobin', Millipede, PaperBoy,etc. which include HD graphics, surround sound, online multiplayer, simple controls, and NO 3D polygon graphics. Basically, I want something like the originals with new levels, better graphics and better sound.
    I really dislke long intros and cut scenes. I'm sure I'm in the minority there, but really, I just want to get on with the game. I don't need to watch a 5 minute, really boring and poorly acted scene between every level in every game. I think publishers started including them as a way to fool people into believing their games had better graphics because those scenes were often pre-rendered or had simplified backgrounds so it was easier to do things with the characters that was impossible during regular game play. I will grant a free pass to Pac Man, however, as those cut scenes are really short and seem to be intended to let your hand rest in a game without pause. And I love Pac Man. LOL.

    Great great job covering these classic titles (I own a large majority of these) you guys were spot on flawless from start to finish here, admiring the "full side of the cup" of these classics is what really strikes home.. just as we saw it back then. Data East is high classic material and definitely a must in every hardcore collection. You guys picked many favorites. I'd be nice to see you guys cover some Irem/Nazca (=loads of gems) and sometimes overlooked Taito.

      Oh definitely. We plan on doing as many developers and publishers as we can find material to cover. Some of the bigger ones will be tougher because we have to leave out more and more games and we'll disappoint someone with that no matter what we do.

    Game Sack is such a bad ass channel. I look forward to watching every episode because they have a found an excellent formula that works. I like how they separate each episode into categories, many of which are unique and interesting. The video and sound quality is great and the gameplay footage for each game gives it a professional feel. They don't go over board with the humor, just straight to the point with the games. I like that. I also appreciate the length of each episode as they are often well over 20 minutes, sometimes past the 30 minute mark which is great to sit down and watch while you eat and meal or during a smoke session. Plus they both are good friends so they have natural chemistry that comes across well. Another solid episode.

    Really enjoyed this episode. Not a company I was fond of growing up. I think you guys hit the nail on the head when you said that Data East made a lot of good games but nothing that you could say you loved. Like most people growing up I had to be very selective about which games I would buy and/or rent and the Data East games tended to be the ones I would look at and go, "Yeah, that looks cool, but ...", and then move on to another game like Double Dragon, or Mega Man, or ... well you get the idea. I hope you continue to make episodes like this. You definitely mentioned some games I never heard of that I'm going to check out! Thanks again!

    DATA-EAST is a part of the arcade legend era !
    & you didn't talk with Kuga (vapor trail), Skull Fang, Rohga - Armor Force, Heavy Smash, Sly Spy, Joe & Mac Return, Backfire!, Dragon Gun, Magical Drop II & III, neither Ghostlop (a Neo-geo prototype).
    also the ones covered in the past like Night Slashers in the Halloween video, or Garyo Retsuden, Mutant Fighter, Psycho-Nics Oscar, Nitro Ball & Dark Seal earlier.
    i am a VGM fan (i still have some Joe covers) & i love the Hiroaki Yoshida (MARO), Tatsuya Kiuchi (Mr.K) & Akira Takemoto (Raika)'s compositions, old fan of Gamadelic ;D

    Oh man, THANKS for mentioning High Seas Havoc! I remember discovering that game on an emulator as a kid and was reminded of it with this video. Now the only platform hidden gem still missing from my memory is one on the SNES that featured some kind of "human-looking" rodent dressed in blue kind of like the protagonist from Harvest Moon. I think he had a cape that he could hide in or something?

    Some of the cut features in old games weren't just to avoid translations, but to save money on chips.
    RAM, ROM, and the mapper chips which allowed the NES to do more than very basic games used to be VERY expensive.

    I remember playing a lot of Data East games. You're right! They had a few good games like Bad Dudes, Captain America, and Robocop. But, for every good game, they had about 2 more bad games that were choppy with flickering graphics! But anyway, great review! Some of these games I never played because they weren't ported to the USA.
