Karate saved my life in high school. Bully called me out by my locker and I took him down, but I realized what I did and ran away back home. Only use karate when it truly necessary
IForgot HisName Not too late to start, man! In my dojo (Shorinji Kempo, not Karate) there is a 60-70yo green belt kenshi, who has never practised martial arts before and he's going strong. No more excuses, man!
Same I started when I was 11 and my teacher wanted me in the torderments straight away aha, I moved quiet a lot when I was young so I just gave up on sport because I knew I’d keep moving, but I’ve started back at it again I’m currently 16 so it’s great
Good question. You need to distinguish between basics and application. You would rarely see someone in a real fight try to balance a punch by pulling the other arm to the hip. When practicing basics, the objective is to refine your technique and work toward better harmony. On another level, it may not just pulling the hand back, but pulling and striking. There are many layers of understanding to peel off.
In a real fight you don't actually pull the other arm all the way back, it's just to burn the movement into your muscle of using your hips and pulling the arm back to generate more power.
This is for practice punching. As one arm comes back the other goes out, thus creating additional power while turning at the hips. No one would use this technique in an actual fight or even kumite competition.
It looks as if your shoulder is pushed forward instead of locked down. Punching a makiwara or heavy boxing bag will correct the posture within a few weeks.
I always wondered this, I'm not knocking it, I'm genuinely curious.. but doesn't this technique of punching leave you with absolutely no guard to defend all those knockout points across your face and jawline?
I don't think you are practicing karate if you don't practice punching. That's like saying you practice tennis every day, but not with those silly rackets.
Am I allowed to be annoyed by the fact that his shoulders aren't in line when throwing the punches? Chuudan Zuki or Choku Zuki ideally is meant to have the shoulders lock in place for sturdiness when doing general basics. Most punches in Karate should never have have the shoulders over extend unless you're too far away from someone, to which you probably would be around beginner, intermediate or advanced in belt (not a Dan ranking, still colour) as that's a pretty early on mistake. Not sure if he's just exaggerating the movement or something, but I still am annoyed that his shoulders didn't stay in line.
I respect Karate and all Japanese martial arts. But if you want to learn how to punch correctly learn how to Box. By the time you threw one Karate punch to the chest you've already thrown 6 boxing punches to the chin.
Sorry mate but I disagree with you. There's no right way or wrong way to punch whether it's boxing or karate. Both are just as powerful to each other, even though both have different purposes. And Karate punches aren't just about throwing KO's it's also about snappiness too just like in boxing. PS Im a Shotokan Karateka.
JOSEPH22202 Karate isn't much of a Combat Sport in general, that is why it isn't used in Mixed Martial Arts nearly as much as Boxing or Muay Thai. If you want the closest equivalent to decent Karate try Kickboxing.
I do not respect anything about karate. The practitioners call themselves martial artists, yet most dont do any practical moves that are traditional under live resistance. This b.s art will never hold up against boxing, and all these people are good at is point fighting. If you want to learn karate, only expect to get discipline and good stretching out of it. It is so sad how people still to this day think this art is practical for self defence.
Wow really? Hahaha. I seriously recomend you learn hand-to-hand combat of military instead of martial arts. Bullies are all talk but no walk. They can punch hard but they are seriously scared of getting hit in the face and such
"Don't fear the man that knows a thousand of techniques, fear the man that has practiced 1 technique a thousand times."

Ik this was made 7 years ago but you should've honked him like in karate kid😂😂😂
This is a great explanation of the punch. Simple yet often misunderstood.
I wish I didn't quit Karate. I was really good at it. I was young so it was a little stressful

I have been watching your karate lessons and i'm advanced in karate because of you :) i started learning from these vids and you a great teacher!!
NICE, keep those videos coming these are helpful.
I was taught this punch in a Shaolin class and the instructor called it a reverse punch.
Reverse Punch is just a direct punch but thrown from the back hand. So depending on where the punch was being thrown, he could be correct
Very helpful video thank you

Who ever said that a closed hand thrust away from ones body was meant to be a "punch" or an offensive technique????

Amazing
Btw I love karate
But theres no dojo where I live
Just Jujitsu :'v
adapt, improvise, overcome
Jujitsu, taekwondo?
Love karate.
He standing square if he got hit his back leg won`t keep him from falling because in a square stance there is no back leg you just stumble backwards.
It's just a drill. He did say you can punch better from other stances.
Shizentai isn't a combat stance, it's a stance generally used in Kihon (basics) to practise a certain movement for a technique.
I always wondered this, I'm not knocking it, I'm genuinely curious.. but doesn't this technique of punching leave you with absolutely no guard to defend all those knockout points across your face and jawline?
So nice sports sir
Can I join ur dojo
after this i felt like miyagi
Lmao
from Detroit.I love karate i practice every day BUT the only technique i dont do is the "Karate Punch " any alternative technique is better.thanks
I don't think you are practicing karate if you don't practice punching. That's like saying you practice tennis every day, but not with those silly rackets.
Can I ask you 15 questions please at this time ?

My question is why do karatekas pull the non-punching arm to their side like a chicken wing? Doesn't it open up their face for a counter attack?
Donovan Thompson actually the reason is very interesting. Check out Jesse enkamp video he knows his stuff. Including the one you're asking about.
mcgregor is a karateka, so are many other great mama fighters. karate is one of the most effective fighting styles ever

It's just for practicing basic punching. Of course no one fights standing like that.
Hmm so I’m new to karate 🥋 basically karate punches are straight punches not much hip work like boxing and Muay Thai ? … interesting
