- Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, once again breaks down the weaponry of Escape From Tarkov, including some absolutely outrageously cursed weapons, and the SKS rifle.
In the latest video in the Firearm Expert Reacts series, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Escape From Tarkov and compares them to their real-life counterparts.

These Tarkov videos are absolute gold, keep it up Jonathan!
On the pistol clip: isn't the magazine (in that case at least) responsible for the slide-lock?
There was no magazine in the pistol, only one round in chamber, so the slide can't lock back.
Good spot, exactly my thoughts :D They cut the video right after, so when it continues we don't know if there's a mag they removed before showing the new one being put in, but it would make sense that tarkov gets that right :)
To expand on this: You can bring guns with no magazine inside them, so that animation is what happens if you reload with a round in the chamber but no mags
I havent saw information that says that about the PL 15, i know that it has for the sr1mp,
Edit: the one in the sr1pm is actually one that makes it so that when you use all your rounds and the slide is locked back, inserting a new magazine makes it go forward
Pretty sure it was just a jam. Tarkov recently added jamming as a common occurrence and it happens a bit too much to actually be realistic.
@@Definitelydusky well, it can happen, but then it would notify the player via a small message, which I didnt spot

13:03 - Ah, yes, the Retina Destroyer; great for dark corridors.
3:10 most weapons have last round hold open activated by the empty magazine. I'm assuming the gun had a round in the chamber but the magazine was absent.
Edit: corrected the time so it makes a little more sense
Exactly, on 3:27 you can see that the character only introduce the magazine, pointing out that it didn't have a magazine while firing that round on the chamber.
Exactly what I came here to say.
To be honest, at that point I hadn't caught on to the fact that you can have the mag out - obviously that's a pretty rare feature in video games! But yes, if there' no mag, it won't lock open.
@@jonathanferguson1211 You can take the mag out, unload each round, and load a mixture of "bullet salad" if you wanted to assuming they are all the same caliber. You can also carry around magazines or top load the gun one bullet at a time, an example being the Remington 700 bolt action rifle. You hold your reload key and scroll the mousewheel over the method of reloading you want to do. Also, the ammo for the civilian semi automatic AK chambered in .366 will fit in a universal 7.62x39 magazine meant for the semi or select fire 7.62 AK's, so you can have some pretty embarrassing moments if you accidentally bring a magazine from your stash that looks like all the others but just has the wrong ammo in it, effectively disabling your rifle. You can eject rounds at will with a keybind in the case of say, reloading to a magazine with better penetration ammo to get that old round out of there and chamber that fresh pen round. Or just for fun if you want. Your firearm can also malfunction if it's not maintained and in bad shape causing you to have to clear jams frequently. And this is just a fraction of all the cool unrestricted gameplay features.
Last thing I wanna touch on in case anyone else is intrigued by how awesome this game is. You can wear body armor, helmets, and chestrigs. Your ammo HAS to be either in your vest or if the mag is small enough in your pockets (pistol). You can bring in as many loaded magazines as you want but you can only access as many as you put in your vest which for most people is typically 3 mags plus 1 in the gun. On top of this you can bring loose ammo and top up your mags. This becomes a big factor in gameplay usually leading to a lull in prolonged firefights where players retreat, top up mags, and bandage/medkit/splint etc. if they need it. Gunfights either last a little while or you're dead instantly. There's some in between but not much.
Your body armor can be anywhere from class 1-6 with each tier becoming harder to penetrate requiring higher quality rounds and harder to acquire the really high end stuff. You need to know the capabilities of your ammo moreso than the specific rifle or pistol you decided to use. There are 135 unique types of ammo in Tarkov strictly for player firearms, (yes ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE TYPES OF AMMO!!) 3 mounted weapons and an FN40GL Mk2 grenade launcher. The desirable ammo traits are usually enough penetration to get through class 4 and 5 armor and enough flesh damage to be able to take them down with 2 vs 3 shots to the chest. The traits are as follows:
Penetration Power - A number used to determine bullet's penetration chances, and damage inflicted on armor when it fails to penetrate.
Damage Value - The number of Hit Points subtracted from Target's Total HP Pool when a bullet manages to penetrate through Armor.
Armor Damage Ratio (%) - Percentage of Bullet's Damage that is done to Armor when it fails to penetrate.
Projectile Speed - Bullet's initial velocity in meters per second (this speed lowers over distance because of air friction, gravity, humidity, and some other factors that are reflected in the game).
Fragmentation Chance - A likelihood of a bullet splitting/splintering after entering Target's body. Bullets that have Fragmented after impact deal high bonus Damage to Targets.
Ricochet Chance - Rather self-explanatory. Chance of bullet bouncing off a surface when it is shot at an angle.
And that's only going over ammo and armor. There's so much more it's insane. FLIR, NVG's, Faceshields that stop smaller rounds, actual mil dots and realism in the scopes whom Eotech, Walther, Leupold just to name a few, have partnered up with. There are a lot of manufacturers that are partnered and represented in the game including Lonestar Armory from my state of Texas with their TX-15 carbine being featured! Semi auto only, civilian specs just like in real life. Great game to anyone interested.
This ...
14:42 I understood that reference!

"Like who?"

Dang, I was hoping he would say something about how the character locks the SKS bolt back without having an empty magazine in it or reaching in to pull the hold-open up.
Of all the tarkov I've seen, never once has anyone addressed it.
In the beginning when he says the “slide didn’t lock open”. That’s not due to last round in the magazine. It’s a failure to fire / feed. The game has jamming and failure to fire mechanics based on durability and maintenance / cleaning of the firearms. Ie The gun jammed. Happens sometimes.
Another one of those "fun" additions to make us crawl through the glass.
While Gun jams are implemented in tarkov (very very rarely only if gun is super low durability) the malfunctions you see this wipe is a “misfire”. Either due to shitty ammunition or firing pin failure, the primer fails to ignite the powder
no, round ejected. he just didn’t have a mag in.
@David Masters lack of mag, someone chambered a round in the inventory screen and forgot to put the mag in the gun. Fired the first shot and click, because it had nothing.
that did not happen in the video - a gun jam is always notified by a error message in the bottom right corner. There was no error message.

"My final descent into madness"

Jonathan, maybe someone has answered your question already, but I'm pretty sure that the slide didn't lock back because there was no magazine inserted in the pistol. There was a round in the chamber which the player fired, and the pistol fully cycled, but the lack of a magazine prevented the slide from locking back. This is because the last-round hold open feature is typically engaged by the magazine follower pushing up on the inside of the slide release lever.
It's actually a really cool feature that I haven't seen in any other game. In fact, I think Tarkov even has animations for the player manually inserting a cartridge into the chamber when they don't have any magazines, which your average player will never even see.
I just tested it with glock and this is indeed how it works in the game. Slide locks when mag dumping bit not without mag and there's an animation for reloading bullet in chamber without mag
nice pick up
