The fact that there is a director out there who didn't want an actor like Patrick Stewart in his movie just boggles the mind.

@clayisahottie: my guess is that the director would have LOVED to work with an amazing actor like Patrick Stewart... but he just didn't want to have a JEAN-LUC in his movie. I think that most of us still see mister Stewart as Jean-Luc, even when he has done so many other great roles. Here in The Netherlands we have what we know as a so-called "Swiebertje-effect": an actor who is associated with a character he played for many years that's it's almost difficult for us to see (and accept) him play a different character. I have to admit that even when Patrick Stewart has played in so many movies, I always see a "Jean-Luc" (like in Dune, Lifeforce or I, Claudius). I guess that's somehow the price you pay (as an actor) when you've played a (loveable) character so well for so many years! Btw: I've not yet seen Star Trek Picard but I will very soon! Everybody please stay healthy and safe and live long and prosper! Greetings from The Netherlands.

If he doesn’t fit in anymore he doesn’t fit it. Besides he got his own series. So that’s the way it is. He’s doing a second series too.
Plus it was a reboot. So why should he be in it. Picard isn’t Star Trek any more than Kirk or Janeway

I am a lifetime Star Trek fan. Born in 1954, I was 12 years old when the Original Series first debuted on NBC, and I got hooked by the outstanding story-telling and optimistic view of the future. I followed the series for its three-year run, then syndication, the cartoon series, the movies, and Star Trek-The Next Generation. Patrick Stewart as Picard was nothing like Kirk, but he was a Starfleet Captain with a mission. I loved STTNG, Voyager, Enterprise, the Abrams reboot, and Discovery. Now 63 years old, I am thrilled once again to be seeing Stewart as Picard and a brand new series. Make it so...make it so...

I remember how I felt when I first saw this announcement. I was so excited, so hopeful. He spoke about letters he received about the importance of an optimistic future in contrast to today's 'cruelty, barbarity, viciousness and nastiness.' Today, having just finished Picard season 2, I truly wonder how he feels about how the show has turned out. It's dark, negative and pessimistic. Starfleet has become a villain. Smoking, addiction, mental illness and prejudice are commonplace among humans. I understand the arguments for trying to affect social change, but Star Trek always did it in a particular way, standing out among all other forms of Science Fiction media for being the one bright light in the future. Inspiring us by giving us something to strive for, rather than a cautionary tale. I miss old Trek. I miss the old Trek crew. I miss the old Captain Picard and what he stood for. I just can't make myself believe that what we have now is what he envisioned when he gave this announcement 4 years ago.

@Melanie L "SJW shit" has literally been what Star Trek has been about since the beginning. Look at the cast of the original series and consider the time it was made and tell me that wasn't the most "SJW shit" on TV at the time. It's the show that had the first interracial kiss. It was full of storylines that were thingy veiled allegories for contemporary social issues. If anything, Trek has gotten *subtler* about it's allegories. Old school Trek was like getting hit over the head with mallet. This is what good speculative fiction *does.* This is what *good* sci-fi does.
Y'all bitching now about the existence of non-white, non-straight, non-cis dudes taking the reigns of Trek (or even having the gall to exist in the trek universe as anything more than a very special episode) is like those close minded assholes back in the day having a fit because a white guy kissed a black woman on TV and won't somebody think of the children!

Picard's many forceful declarations of what being a captain and crew member of Enterprise and Starfleet meant, and the morals and values for which they served? Like seeking out new life and NEW CIVILIZATIONS? Or the fact that they didn't go around killing every race with whom they disagreed... or caging them... or devaluing and denigrating them... or behaving dishonorably... or caging people AND CHILDREN who just want to escape intolerable and immoral sociopolitical situations... or denying and disregarding facts of science... or just plain lacking ANY scientific and/or medical knowledge... or denying the autonomy of any being over it's own body... or blatantly _lying_ even when caught on audio and/or video recordings or in print... or forcing the entire crew to be only one race/one ethnic group... or denigrating minority ethnic crew members... or espousing inhumane beliefs... or being anti-intellectual... or forcing any nonconsensual acts people... or committing treason by inviting foreign powers to interfere with Starfleet directives, policies, and procedures... Were you even watching and LISTENING to Captain Picard, Riker, Data, and Troi et al and watching the same show as the rest of us? Because Picard and crew -- hell, Kirk, Spock, McCoy and crew -- were not only NOT participating in such behaviors, but actively fought _against_them. IDK which president's values ST:TNG emulated the most - JFK's, FDR's, Lincoln's are all candidates - but I can tell you this:
Trump's plain idiocy, failure to act with dignity and decorum (let alone diplomacy), his denial of facts (including things he was RECORDED saying & doing) - his championing of hateful, racist values and rhetoric, his stated preference for a homogenous society devoid of diversity, his cuts to funding health/education/human welfare/social services ARE THE LAST set of values Picard and ST:TNG would EVER have emulated.
Because whether on ST:TNG or at NASA, the creation, maintenance, flying, use, experimentation, observation, & safe return of both fictional starships and real space shuttles and space stations require intelligence, LOTS of higher education (actual - not purchased), professional communication skills, personal and professional maturity, logical thinking (let alone understanding of numerous hard sciences and mathematics), actual vocabularies (not saying inarticulately that they have "all the words"), the abilities to cooperate, collaborate, and accept constructive criticism within a diverse group of people of all different races and ethnicities, all working towards the same highly intellectual goals of space flight and exploring new worlds -- are all skills the current "president" does not, and will never, possess. They are qualities the "president" has not ever had, they are the exact opposite of who Trump is, how he has behaved, and what he espouses.
I don't know what Captain or show you were watching, but it certainly wasn't the ST:TNG (or even the ST:TOS) I watched and loved. And I'm pretty sure Gene Roddenberry himself would be horrified by our current "president"s xenophobia, anti-intellectualism, and science denial.

These comments have been up a year or more now, and it seems to me the very, sad state of Trek Affairs with both the current, makers of this franchise and the fan base as well, that it's only, gotten three likes in all that time. So extremely, depressing.
I know there was an overall, VISION, behind Trek because I've watched interviews where Mr. Roddenberry stated that very thing. I also, know that Trek has attempted to be progressive and political from day one, trying to always, push the envelope, because Mr. Roddenberry stated that, as well. He wanted his franchise to be BOTH, entertaining AND, educational, as well. From the very, very, start it was ALWAYS, ISSUE ORIENTED! Always.
So Trek fans who choose to be unaware of this, choose to be clueless to the origin of this franchise and its very, reason for coming into existence, in the first place.
When I spoke about all the "mindless dribble" in most of Sci Fi, I was referring to all the depressing and pessimistic visions most Sci Fi writers seem to have of the future, and how silly and superficial most Sci Fi seems to be. Trek has always, been different from that, taking a different path, and for Trek to STAY, Trek PROPERLY, it should remain true to that path. It is the ONLY, Sci Fi franchise EVER, created, that I'm aware of anyway, that has provided us with the most HOPEFUL, vision of the future we possibly, may have ever, had! THAT, is WHY, it has LASTED FOR OVER, HALF A DAMN CENTURY, ALREADY! THAT IS IT'S SECRET! And any Trek fan who is unable or unwilling to embrace that VISION, of the future and the PHILOSOPHY, behind that vision, can't rightly, call themselves a true and proper Trek Fan AT ALL, as far as I'm concerned. You are only, butchering and degrading it.
You know, it saddens me to no end, that Gene's son does not speak up on these types of things more, and does not aggressively, support fans like myself. I've tried to contact him before but he's never wanted to bother with me.
Is there a future for Trek, Campbell? The Trek I've known, loved and understand? I don't know. I honestly, don't know. Yes, I remain hopeful, as what else can you do, but looking at the state of the world today, and the kinds of attitudes that permeate everywhere; well, I really, don't know. But I can tell you one thing; the VISION and PHILOSOPHY of Trek have never been needed MORE, than it is today. That's damn well sure.

Hopefully he will read these comments someday. His portrayal of Picard truly had a positive impact on millions upon millions of lives. When you consider the fact that next generation was on public television the immense spectrum of profound impact that transcended language, race, young, old, rich, poor, male, female, and any other niche barrier you want to throw in. The total becomes incalculable. There is now way for me figure out the amount of time I spent watching, all I can say is that every single hour was worth it and still is counted among of the best of my life. TY Patrick Stewart.

Something tells me that in our present political climate, he decided that he could make a longer-lasting impact on humanity as Picard than as Lear.

Your life might be made very incomplete soon. If they put Picard in the car crash known as Star Trek: Discovery, even if Patrick Stewart is doing a fine job, which he probably will, it wont make the series nor his performance any better. Its like putting a cherry on top of a steaming pile of shit, it doesnt transform the shit into fudge but sullies the cherry instead.
Even if they make a new series, im very skeptical. Most showrunners and script writers have no clue how to approach Science Fiction. Star Wars and Star Trek are very different, but the same lack of vision has destroyed both of them. If you want to relive TNG, just watch The Orville, its the closest thing we have to TNG. As friends of the Science Fiction Genre we havent had much to be happy about, maybe The Expanse and Altered Carbon but those are just drops on a hot stone.
I hope they wont destroy one of the best Captains in Star Trek history. I truly hope he wont end up like Luke Skywalker.

I never realized how much of an impact Star Trek TNG had in my life. I grew up watching it at dinner every night with my grandmother. Our bond remained tight over the decades. Recently I lve undertaken the task of watching ALL OF STAR TREK. When I told my grandmother this she laughs and says "OH No". I comically blamed her for planting the Trekkie seed in me all those years ago. TNG has a special place in my heart since that's what introduced me into the expanding Star Trek universe. Now as I write this, season 2 of Picard is out, I'm diving deeper into the lore and refreshing my memories of all of Star Trek as I've seen it as a child.
