What is the use of the basestars if the raiders have ftl capability even greater than batlestar? The basestars cary raiders but the raiders can travel themselves with ftl and plus they act independently from basestars! I mean for coordonation of the raiders it would've been suficient a small ship not carriers like basestars! Also the raiders do not rearm from basestars!
fuel. Plainm and simple. They have to refuel at somepoint, and the basestars offer missile support that aids them in battle, on top of delivering deadly anti capitol missiles to a battlestar.
Daniel I've been making my way through your spacedock reviews recently & noticed that you've never covered Voyager from Star Trek. It's a ship I'd really like to see your opinion on, just a suggestion for future videos.
Hi, could you do the Eagle Transport from Space 1999 soon or later? It's a ship i really like and i think it could make an intresting video seen its modular nature and the various versions avaible.
I see the raiders as far more similar to an animalistic pack hunter than a human like robot compared to the rest of the Cylons. They do not need a more advanced intelligence. They live for the hunt and do not scheme like the rest of their kind.
My understanding was that the FTL drive system all the ships use is universally unlimited, the limits come from the ability to accurately calculate said jump. This i think was pretty much stated during the show. And don't forget the Raptor has FTL drive on board too, and when considering how much of the Raptor is actually cabin the FTL drive must be pretty small.
I find all the ships of BSG seem drastically undersized for what they're supposed to be. Modern single-occupant jet fighters can be twice the size of Vipers, while Raptors seem to fill a role similar to the significantly larger Huey helicopters. I understand this is mostly due to budget/set limitations than anything. It'd be really hard to work on sets with 20m long Vipers and 10m wide Raptors.
The space for an occupant inside the raider is actually big enough for a humanoid adult as demonstrated by the fact that lt. Thrace was able to lay down inside one and on the matter of the cylon FTL drive the raider with lt. Thrace in it was able to FTL jump from the battlestar galactica's location back to caprica in one shot, something that i might add is impossible for even the battlestar Galactica.
While I much prefer the 1978!BSG Raiders, as they look like the (originally) Colonial designs they are, Nu!BSG Raiders look more intimidating and evil. I think the reason both designs work, is because they both fit the themes of their respective shows; In 1978!BSG, the Cylons are sympathetic villains, robot slaves that repelled against tyrannical masters. As such their designs aren’t intended to be dark and unsettling, but rather to match the overall design language of the Colonial vessels they were built to support. However, 40 years later in Nu!BSG, the Cylons are firmly the bad guys, genocidal planet-nuking baby-killing (lookin at you Six) Lawful/Neutral Evil. The Nu!BSG designs reflect that. They don’t even ACT like proper fightercraft, instead swarming their prey like a pack of rabid dogs.
@@TheMachineGod966 - There are a few "flying wing" style fighters similar to these Cylon Raiders in Star Wars. It's entirely possible to replicate this spaceframe within Star Trek in almost any size. Your argument is completely invalid.

Mecha-san I honestly kinda like it, especially since each raider gains experience over time. It really adds to the Cylons' role as the inexhaustible threat that waxes as the colonials threaten to wane.
I don't get why they didn't share knowledge among the Raiders that why every Raider that survives makes the whole deadlier. I mean out side of plot reasons that is.
Hermon ThyGreat the same way you currently receive WiFi through empty space. aside from what that other guy already said cylons in BSG have a "plot" ability to "hack into any network" as demonstrated later on in a series pluggign together 3 main computers of galactice into a joint network to recalculate coordinates faster already made her vulnerable to cylons "hacking" despite whole thing being "secured by 8 layers of firewall" basically writers having no idea how networks and firewalls works >.>
True, but how many people actually know how networks and firewalls works? Most people don’t even know what BASIC is. If there’s anything in story you can slack on and get away with it, I think this is one of the safest.

It was magnificent! The only failure was the secondary booster crashed and did not land on the sea going barge. The duel landing of the primary outside boosters, at the same time and side-by-side, was fantastic. Watching the video, I was cheering and yelling. It was just plain exciting as hell. Watch the payload revealed, a Tesla Roadster with a spacesuit wearing crash dummy and a placard reading 'Don't Panic!' on the dashboard was unreal. That reference to Douglas Adams was hilarious. It looked like the opening scene in the movie 'Heavy Metal'. Our future is out there among the stars and today we took the next step.
The design concept of these unmanned Raiders, with its horseshoe look, actually originated from the BSG Second Coming trailer made by Richard Hatch 20 years ago. Anybody here remember Free Space's mod Beyond the Red Line? It became a standalone, if I'm not mistaken. Those Raiders sure is hard to shoot at from front, rear or side, due to their narrow profile signature. The only way to hit them easily are from the top or below.
I'm currently watching the BSG miniseries for the first time. I really like the Raiders. They look really neat, and I love the idea of them being unmanned, individual entities in their own right. That makes perfect sense for a mechanized race, and makes for a cool opponent for the pilots. ...Which is why I'm quite disappointed that they squandered a lot of that potential by making it so humans are able to pilot them. I just watched the episode in which Kara "Starbuck" Thrace escaped a barren moon by crawling inside the the head-cavity of a crashed Raider, finding an extremely convenient supply of nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere to breathe, and was then able to fly it perfectly well (performing advanced combat maneuvers, no less) by... pulling on the tubes. Sigh.
The Cylon basestars carry no ballistic weaponry?????? Um, I think they do sir. Don't you see all the missiles being launched from the basestars themselves? I really like the raider, very fun design and very unique. They probably shouldn't have given them FTL and left that to the heavy raider. Having long range FTL makes the base stars a bit superfluous. You don't need a carrier if you don't need to be carried.

Could you do a video on the original series ships, vs the new RDM series ships? I haven't had the chance to watch much of the original, and I'm very curious about the differences, and if they are significant or just minor.
I am somewhat torn with this design. It does look quite cool. But given the fact, that it was designed and built by an AI, my thought process looks at the vectorial space flight in BSG. The pincer shaped wings are attached at the aft located “head module”. The amount of strain from inertia on these joints is immense, especially as they are very off-center in a vertical change in direction (vertical from the plane of the ship). That’s just my thought on it, but Doug Drexler would probably call that the ape brain kicking in. And as always a very impressive video.
No it is the second war. The newer series is 'reimagined' aka reboot. I like the newer version. It is really gritty and realistic. (for a sci-fi adventure/drama) The first episode after the mini-series really sets the pace for the series as a whole.
Aside from plot, I always wondered why in the hell didn't the Colonials attempt to reverse engineer the obviously smaller FTL and integrate them into the Vipers??
Hey Spacedock, I'm not sure if you heard about this yet or not, but the French publishers of Star Wars books and graphic novels have been forced by Disney to stop all republication of Legends material in the French translation in the country. The previous publishers were "Pocket" and "Delcourt" for the comics and they had been doing this since 1992 when _Heir_ _to_ _the_ _Empire_ was brought into France. There has been no news over whether or not the rights was going to be moved to another publisher, but according to fans it seems unlikely. The current canon books and comics are still able to be translated and published just not Legends. There is no other word other than censorship for this act, and I don't throw that word around lightly. I bring this to your attention because I know that you love all of Star Wars and respect the fan base. I hope that you can spread the word around due to your large following. I know that the current fan base is a little toxic right now with people taking sides and being angry over each other with their opinions and that you don't do videos on Star Wars related news, but I think that if this is brought to attention then a large number of fans can see that this is wrong. That this move by Disney to stop people from enjoying all of Star Wars and forcing what they want is wrong. Here are some links that help to explain the situation there that has occurred over the past month. I hope that you read this and help to bring this out in the open because the Star Wars homepage and Facebook group have not. At the very least I ask that you either pin or favorite this comment so that everyone can see it and be aware of this. www.theexpandeduniverse.com/single-post/2018/01/31/Mort-des-L%C3%A9gendes-French-publisher-loses-rights-to-republish-Legends www.theexpandeduniverse.com/single-post/2018/02/02/Mort-des-L%C3%A9gendes-A-French-fans-reaction www.theexpandeduniverse.com/single-post/2018/02/02/Mort-des-L%C3%A9gendes-Part-III
My question is this. How would a squadron of manned Raiders and biomechanical Raiders fair in a dogfight against a squad of Droid starfighters from the Confederacy Of Independent Systems? The CIS squadron would include a number of Vulture Droids, the dreaded Tri-Fighters, and Hyena-class Bombers.
bookman B. I don't know anything about BSG lore, but here are few ideas: - carriers can repair the fighters without need for them to waste time by travelling to nearest base - small fighter logically cannot carry much fuel and ammo, mothership with lots of space for fuel and ammunition is good to refuel and also resupply fighter
Awesome design although with a bit of thought the Cylon strategy and tactics make little sense. If a Raider has an FTL drive then why does it need to deploy from a Basestar?! Could build insane amounts for the production materials needed for a capital ship. Then again Raiders need to be fed and given breathable gasses etc so it almost defeats the purpose of giving them huge FTL range. Might as well have kept them simple and more streamline like a BSG version of the Tie Fighter. Which is essentially what the makers of the show intended anyway from all the OTT "woooooooooooooooooooooooooo" noises they all make when seen on screen!!!
One wonders why the cylons use Basestars as anything other than supply ships, but then I think the Cylons are poorly. Designed from a tactical persective I mean really all they need is the raider and the centurion and some suply ships for when they run out of nukes
Always thought that the biomechanoid parts were a dumb decision. I know it seems kind of cool but it just needs more equipment on board to support the biological parts and the mechanical parts and to link them. And maybe more important since the biological systems are fluidbased they are much stronger affected by G-Forces drastically limiting the Raiders maneuverability. With pure mechanic parts the Raiders would outmatch the human piloted vipers in nearly every maneuver since they could turn faster and harder than any biological pilot ever could. Then i ask myself what are the advantages?
of coarse i meant from an in universe point of view. As for the showmakers it was surly smart since the bio parts seem kind of cool and we all know the rule of cool can justify nearly anything. And with that in mind the Raiders were brillant designed they look dangerous, alien and through all still like an originally human created AI could come up with the design.
It's probably because of the resurrection tech. Works instantly over large distances, but only on organics. This way every time a raider gets destroyed, the creature inside respawns in a new one - with experience from all the past lives. If the Colonials didn't destroy the resurrection ship, encountering aces like Scar would eventually be the standard, not an anomaly.
this whole design is just style over substance. If you made a living ship, you would atleast make it so that it would have a 360 viewing angle or can rotate the guns.
it does have sensors giving it a 360 degree view of the battle, the eye is purely aesthetic as for having turets, considering their manuverability I do not think turets would be of any help at all
Terry Forsdyke is right, Raiders can “see” better than a pilot in a cockpit, deriving it’s information from both is DRADAS and optic eye simultaneously. Since Raiders aren’t effected by G-forces, turrets would be slower to rotate than the ships own banking and rotation maneuvers. Also because it’s in space, it can accelerate forward, use its thrusters to face behind itself, fire, and again face forward without losing momentum. It’s a living turret itself.
In purely aesthetic terms, I hated the look of the updated raider. The 'flying Cylon head with wings' is just silly looking and really smacks of 80s cartoons and even older comic books. If that was their intent, well, well done them. Just my opinion.

1 dislike. I wonder if the colonials watched this video........
Nah that was cylon model 1's work
So say we all
Sa43 hammerhead
It looks the void ships from Galaxy on Fire2
A bit your right
Who remembers Scar from Season 2 Ep 15
Just binge-watched the series, but I'd have remembered this episode if I saw it first-run.
You should do Eve online ships
Do the higaran battle cruser from homeworld 2
Why build expensive FTL drives into throw away fighters?
But what's the point of basestars as Raider carrier if Raiders can go FTL by themselves ?
bookman B. I don't know anything about BSG lore, but here are few ideas:
- carriers can repair the fighters without need for them to waste time by travelling to nearest base
- small fighter logically cannot carry much fuel and ammo, mothership with lots of space for fuel and ammunition is good to refuel and also resupply fighter
bookman B. Extended range, saving fuel, I'm sure there's more reasons.
it's also biomechanical, so... food and air resupply?
The same reason we have aircraft carriers for our aircraft
@iC FR0ST
Our aircraft have a limited range and can't land on water.
Those fighters have pretty much unlimited range and there is no water.
Boiiiiiiiiii do Custodian from 40K please
Why do enemies always use that “overwhelming force” tactic lol
One of the Soviet leaders was quoted as saying "Quantity has a quality all its own." when being asked about dealing with superior aircraft.
Do Subjagator-class pls
harrower class dreadnought pls
Do Space ball 1/mega maid
OG BSG> New BSG.
Oi
Designed from a tactical persective
I mean really all they need is the raider and the centurion and some suply ships for when they run out of nukes
Meh no Match for an F3O2
If you made a living ship, you would atleast make it so that it would have a 360 viewing angle or can rotate the guns.
it does have sensors giving it a 360 degree view of the battle, the eye is purely aesthetic
as for having turets, considering their manuverability I do not think turets would be of any help at all
Terry Forsdyke is right, Raiders can “see” better than a pilot in a cockpit, deriving it’s information from both is DRADAS and optic eye simultaneously. Since Raiders aren’t effected by G-forces, turrets would be slower to rotate than the ships own banking and rotation maneuvers. Also because it’s in space, it can accelerate forward, use its thrusters to face behind itself, fire, and again face forward without losing momentum. It’s a living turret itself.
robinvan1983 And besides, why not lower moral of the enemy by scaring the shit out of them before the fight starts?
I never liked they gave them ftl drives. I think they were just too cheap to design a Cylon equivalent to the colonial raptor early on.
The original BSG is better then the new 1
The raiders from the first war that had 3 cylon pilots was so much better than this version
In purely aesthetic terms, I hated the look of the updated raider. The 'flying Cylon head with wings' is just silly looking and really smacks of 80s cartoons and even older comic books. If that was their intent, well, well done them. Just my opinion.
