    This video isn't part of the officially contracted Battlestar Deadlock series, but it does include some lore and artwork from that game, so you can check it out here if you're interested. (It's pretty great.) :)

      I think you should start contributing to some of the various Wiki pages for these universes. Your research would go a long way. The Battlestar Galactica wiki is particularly bad. I think your Galactica videos provide more information than that entire wiki.

    Galactica was, in fact decommissioned the day BEFORE the Cylon attack, which is why most of her fighters were destroyed by the Cylon virus + wall of Raiders combo attack. One flight pod had been so thoroughly converted into a museum that only the port pod was able to launch Vipers & Raptors, & receive visiting craft.
    The only thing that changed was that Galactica immediately returned to active duty. That's what made their jump to Ragnar Anchorage(?) so essential-- they had to raid that ammo depot!!!

    Museum version of Galactica had fewer guns, less armor, skeleton crew. When it was built the contractor even cut corners in its design, But was still able to get back into service fairly quickly and was able to stand up to a fully armed Cylon basestar. Imagine what fully armed and operational Galacita could do?

    The galactica's probably my favorite sci-fi capital ship just for how far above it's weight it was punching.

    • @anzaca1
      @anzaca1 6 років тому +8

      The Enterprise would be wiped out by even a CR90 Corvette. SW ships are on average larger, faster, and more heavily armed with more powerful guns. Not only that, ST ships have stupid designs, with their engines and warp drives mounted in outboard pods, making them vulnerable, while in SW ships typically have such devices buried deep within the hull.

    • @anzaca1
      @anzaca1 6 років тому +4

      1. SW shields DO work. But since they're invisible, it's hard to see them working. They've been best shown in Rebels, with the Ghost being hit many, many times without sustaining physical damage, thanks to its shields.
      2.On the subject of firepower, you are so wrong. One example I can point to is the Providence-class carrier/destroyer, whose point-defense ion cannons are STATED to generate the equivalent of 4.8 MEGATONS per shot:
      starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Providence-class_carrier/destroyer#Offensive_and_defensive_systems
      You also have the Acclamator-class assault ship, whose quad turbolasers are rated at 200 GIGATONS per shot:
      starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Acclamator-class_assault_ship#Offensive_and_defensive_systems
      It stands to reason that SW shields can easily handle firepower on such scales as these. Also, the only definitive photon torpedo yield I've found is 690 gigatons. Given that in SW, a single capital ship turbolaser is about 1/3 as powerful as this, such torpedoes pose little threat to an SW capital ship, such as a Star Destroyer. These are ships that generate more power than a star.

  • @thatguywiththepie01
    @thatguywiththepie01 7 років тому +238

    Fun fact: the Galactica's exterior plating isn't the ship's only form of armor. The missing plates on top of the ribbed section are de-capping plate; essentially an extra layer of armor meant to serve roughly the same function as a whipple shield. This plating is designed to be the first point of contact for incomming projectiles: and to absorb enough impact velocity for the projectile to break-up, and disperse its energy over a wider area, so that the armor underneath can better bear the load of the projectile.
    The Galactica is certainly more protected in the areas where the decapping plate is still present, but it's by no means defenseless. Battlestars are juggernauts that can withstand enormous amounts of punishment, this is why it's possible for one battlestar to take on multiple cylon basestars.

The mass of the additional armor and batteries is nothing compared to the mass of the battlestar itself, Pegasus was also heavily armored without having any major speed and range limitations. Plus, the armor and batteries would serve as an incredible booster when fighting cylon basestars.

      Don't forget she didn't even have ammunition until docking at Ragnar Anchorage. She probably didn't even have proper fuel reserves and provisions. Her real strength was her Vipers, which were almost totally offloaded along pilots and support crews. Armor and weapons would have reduced the damage she sustained and most likely allowed her to carry on longer before the structural weakening occurred, thanks to the rushed construction.
      Having said that, with Galactica still a fully-functioning asset, some of battle group may still have been intact.

      If you look at the CGI model from Blood and Chrome, the Galactica in her heyday had about 3-4 times as many main guns and about twice as many secondary weapons than in the main series. Not to mention the armor and second flight pod and three times the fighters.

    • @frederalbacon
      @frederalbacon 3 місяці тому +1

      Basestars aren't made for offense, they're made for planetary bombardment, the only thing the Cylons thought they'd ever need to do with them. They weren't designed to chase ships, they didn't expect to need to, they didn't expect to have a ship maintain its offensive and defensive capabilities, that's why the Galactica was able to survive, the Basestars weren't designed to deal with them.

  • @fishescu

    Wait a second. Considering the amount of armaments indicated in the first cylon war does that mean that Galactica was actually under armed during the events of the second cylon war and subsequent exodus?

    I just started watching this again on Hulu. I always thought one of the things they should’ve shown in the final episode was humanity putting a Viper Mk2 or a Raptor down on the dark side of the moon as a time Capsule of sorts for their descendants to one day find with a map back to the 12 colonies or something to assure the cycle would remain broken rather than hoping it would.

      Jackie Charleston Chew Schwartz I get that they wanted to do what The original series did in that humanity came from another place other than earth and so putting the Galactica in plain sight like that just wouldn’t make any sense, but the ending could have been a satalite in orbit of the moon spotting a viper or hell ahead Six reading about the raptors discover instead of mitochondria Eve (boy, I remember reading a whole lot of heat on a bunch of forums on that one).

    I like to think the reason the Jupiter's retract their flight pods is not structural (since the ship is clearly very structurally strong) but because the jump drives at the time of her launch could not create a stable jump effect for a ship of her size. So for a stable jump field to form her profile had to be reduced. Hence why when Galactica jumps with her flight pods extended, the jump field would be unstable or uneven. We see in the series just how destructive a jump field can be when a raptor jumps in close proximity to Galactica. The damage looked worse than a nuclear detonation basically ripping through the armoured hull like paper. So when Galactica jumps within an unstable field it causes irreparable damage due to uneven field strength being applied to different areas of the ship.

      lord aredhel imagine if the colonies stayed with a sense of insecurity for the 40 years before the second cylon war and built a lot of fully armed jupiters without the need of the CNP, I bet the colons are gonna nuke the ships instead of the planets but will all get wrecked by flak defenses

    • @Lennis01
      @Lennis01 7 років тому +1

      It's not that the Cylons built inferior ships. They just had a completely different military doctrine that favored lower-mass capital ships that relied on missiles instead of guns. (They could have built their own Battlestar type platform if they wanted to.) The Mk II Basestar also had the advantage of more advanced (meaning accurate) FTL engines and the ability to repair itself in the field. In a conventional conflict, I think the Mk II Basestar has the edge. The problem is that the second Cylon war was not a conventional conflict. Its aim was not to wear down Colonial forces or get them to retreat, but to annihilate them utterly. So you had Basestars designed for long-range contests of attrition used instead at close range in hopes of getting a few more missile hits through Galactica's flak screen before it could jump away. The result was a bunch of wrecked Basestars. But what did the Cylons care? They had the ability to download and resurrect, making combat losses meaningless as long as they had their resurrection hub.

    My one question about the Galactica: they had 4 years, and access to foundry and refining ships, why in the hell did they not remove the museum from the starboard flight pod and bring it online again? Hell, even if the magnetic launch tubes were gone, you could have at least had the flight deck for retrieving craft in battle, as a dedicated resupply dock, or as a Raptor launch deck.

    Can we have an episode about the Sobek Class battlestar? Technically it is a cannon ship, and its destruction plays a major role in the safety of the majority of the FTL capable ships in the "ragtag fleet." The Sobek Class was overall an updated version of the Jupiter Class ship and is, when fully armed and supplied, can operate for months and battle and destroy up to 3-4 baseships at once.
    Noted battles:
    Battle at Virgon: The battle that proceeded the escape at Ragnar Anchorage.

    In each video you classify each ship by the type of physics it employs and the type of gravity it employs. Now, you've already done a video about artificial gravity in sci-fi, would you consider doing a video about the different classifications of physics categories? Because almost every ship covered is listed as Semi-Newtonian, although the Sulaco is listed as Fully-Newtonian. I'd love to hear you explain the difference between Fully-Newtonian and Semi-Newtonian physics in your buttery smooth voice.

    • @TheOneWhoMightBe
      @TheOneWhoMightBe 7 років тому

      In the Babylon5 universe, fully-Newtonian would be all Earthforce ships up to the advent of the Warlock class (The Victory class being an ISA design). Semi-netwonian would be things like Whitestars and Minbari vessels, which obeyed newtonian physics when maneuvering but had artificial gravity for the occupants.

    I know this is controversial but I think that despite much emotional attachment we had with Galactica (ESPECIALLY after what Adama had pulled off not too long ago).
    I think it was a mistake to sacrifice the Pegasus for the less advanced ship, in a time where their nomadic journey might be the last hope of humanity. It would have been interesting to see how the Pegasus and her Captain would have led humanity without most of the problems the Galactica had.
    And if people would insist, MAYBE (And I MAYBE) have Adama take command.

  • @notgonnahappen7899

    I think one of the appeals of BSG is despite its futuristic setting, the weapons are strictly conventional. Flak cannons not shields. Bullets, missiles and nukes, no lasers or other energy weapons. They can fold space and developed true AI, but their weapons are no different than what we have today.

  • @leomartin5965
    @leomartin5965 4 роки тому

    What does she does for shielding? Unless she is programed to scan for and avoid cosmic dust when the vessel is in faster than light mode, how does the Galactica and the LATE Admiral KANE'S VESSEL AVOID hULL BREACHES WHEN THEY BOTH ARE AT FLANK without having hull breaches?.

    It has a thrust of 1,500 kilometers per second? That's insane. It could literally reach just under light speed in minutes. With thrust like that, they were better off accelerating at sublight to each new star system; relativity would have kept them young.

    • @InvincibleSol
      @InvincibleSol 2 роки тому +1

      Wait a second. If that's it's thrust, then why was the Adama maneuver even necessary? The ship could have easily hovered. Hell, the ship could have gone from the planet to the escaping the battle in a second.

    I’ll be honest, I was never a fan of the carrier aspect of the Battlestar design with keeping the flight pods separate from the main hull like that.
    Thinking in crossover terms, a can see a ship with energy weapons just slicing those pods off their anchors.

    • @Kestrel-ws3cg
      @Kestrel-ws3cg 7 років тому +1

      Mecha-san true that is a weakness but it does make sense for landing and taking off for strike crafts but the said weakness I think can be removed by melding the pod and the hull altogether

    • @shdwfx40001
      @shdwfx40001 7 років тому +14

      They could be considered a weakness, but then imagine if (for example) A ship like Daedalus targets the Vipers with railgun batteries as they are launched and causes secondary explosions, on a Wraith Hive with the flight decks in the primary hull causes severe damage, meanwhile the Galatica the damage is mostly contained to a smaller secondary section that can be easily contained. HMM?

      Mecha-san Whatever type of armor they’re using can take multiple direct hits from thermonuclear missiles, without any shields whatsoever - I’m not sure an energy weapon would be able to slice anything off Galactica

    • @shdwfx40001
      @shdwfx40001 7 років тому +5

      Captain Smirk not a good bet. A nuclear detonation is rarely about heat but the massive shockwave. If you've seen T2 that's been the best representative of a nuclear bomb.
      Then compare to something like a covenant plasma torpedo, which has burned through two sets of titanium armor plus anything in between ignited the air inside and killed everything inside. So a very bad idea to tank a plasma weapon with anything but energy shields.

  • @studinthemaking
