When I was growing up I never wanted a decorated birthday cake. I just wanted a German chocolate cake
My mom made me a GC cake every year for my birthday. It’s still my favorite
Me too! :)
Tammy, this brought a tear to my eye. My momma always made a from scratch German Chocolate cake including from scratch frosting for my birthdays... I'm 61 today and wish I had some of that cake... Miss you momma 🙏
Happy Blessed Birthday Scott! God Bless. 🙏❤🎂😁
German chocolate is not from Germany.
The name comes from Sam German - who was either an American or an Englishman, depending on what you read. In 1852, he invented a style of sweet baking chocolate for the Baker's chocolate company. The company named it after him, but "German's Chocolate" didn't become well-known until 1957. About a 105 yrs. after the creation of German's sweet chocolate, the Dallas morning news published a cake recipe by a Texas homemaker, Mrs. George Clay. She called her sweet recipe "German's Chocolate Cake" because it called for this brands sweeter variety chocolate.
I came to make that same explanation. Actually, if you look at the box, it's even called "German's" .
I always this for my son's birthday we all love it
✍ Hi Tammy and Chris... I finally found someone who loves German chocolate cake as much as I do. My very favorite of all cakes. I used to make mine from scratch from the recipe on the Bakers German chocolate and use the recipe for the cooked frosting since I was 10 years old. I'm 77 so now I use a German chocolate cake mix But still make the frosting from scratch...yum nothing tastes better and can eat it with a spoon its so delicious💗 I hear your kitty 🐈Jade but how is Joanne? I don't see the puppies very much they are so cute 💗 Well Tammy got to go cook my green beans everything else is in the oven finishing cooking. God Bless LuvYa! Bye from Ohio❄
Boy I tell you what, I feel like grandma's cooking is still alive well. Now and days everybody wants it already made up & cheap. Love Collard Valley Cooks
Fun Fact: German Chocolate cake was actually created in Texas, in 1852. Originating in the United States, it owes its name to an English-American chocolate maker named Samuel German, who developed a formulation of dark baking chocolate that came to be used in the cake recipe. It is not German by nationality.
Right, and the box on my pantry label reads: Baker's German's Chocolate.
Oh my goodness....that looks amazing!!!
Thank you for sharing......I could almost taste it right thru my screen....LOL
Blessings from Kentucky

I've been married 42 yrs. and my husband asked me to make him a German Chocolate cake for his birthday one year. It took me all day to make that cake and it was totally from scratch! So was the frosting. It was delicious!

Hi Tammy yes the Germany chocolate cake looks so delicious
Pretty and yummy lookin'
Looks delicious!
I love this cake it’s a great dessert cake after a light meal, with a cup of coffee ❤❤❤❤
Looks delicious 😋 😍
German Chocolate is my favorite also. Homemade is the only way to go. And Chris is right you can not have to much icing
Gracious that looks delicious! Save me a piece.😉
Wow one of my favorites ❤❤
Chris that is my favorite even with Italian Cream Cake. I think it's the coconut that draws me to both of them. Thanks for posting! 😁💛
One of my favorites ♥️
Miss Tammy, you had me swallowing hard when you were tasting the cake!! It looks so good! 👍👍😘
I always add more coconut to my icing until it’s very thick. It’s what my family and friends prefer and it looks so pretty. Also, I just use walnuts because I always have them and they are less expensive than pecans up north. I love this cake. I used to make it as a layer cake and still do for dessert when I have guests, but it’s just as delicious as a sheet cake. Like you, I prefer Hershey’s chocolate products. Give me a good old Hersey bar any day of the week and I mean the original milk chocolate bar, no nuts. I don’t care what anybody says. I do love Ghirardelli’s chips for baking, however. They cost twice as much, but who cares. They have the only milk chocolate chips I will bake with on occasion. I also agree that Baker’s coconut is the best. It’s what I always buy.
It looks yummy
I just love your videos. I had to laugh at you wearing shorts. I grew up in the south but now live in Idaho. It was -24 last night.
Looks delicious.
One of my favorites. Also one of my family member's favorite. Thank you Mr. Chris and Ms Tammy... yummy cake.
Have a great Sunday night. God's speed.
I'll keep this in mind for a special occasion.
Looks like mom's cake yummy
It sure does good
Oh my, I wanted a banana pudding pie now I'd rather have German chocolate cake. Oh boy, I may have to make both.
This is my most favorite cake.
Tammy that cake is all that. The topping is my favorite. I love how you show us exactly what things should look like. I bet your goodies were the hit of every pot luck, church. Your job and Chris’s. I’m so hungry now. Yummy looking and I bet tasting. Love Ya❤❤❤
Yummy Tammy! I sure just like pudding and custard the sound on the pan changes when to hit the sides stirring! Love it!!
Ya hoo this is my favorite to! Yay❤❤❤
This looks delicious and moist! Many German Chocolate cakes that I've tasted are so dry, you need milk or coffee to wash them down.
Wow did you bring back a forgotten memory, the first cake I ever learned to make was Baker's German Chocolate Cake using a bar of Baker's German's Chocolate Bar, I did such a good job my mother would ask me to make them whenever she wanted one for the family. I did some research about this recipe for a job I had, it is actually not German at all, in the mid 1800's Sam German created a chocolate bar for Baker's Chocolate Company and they named the bar after him, a recipe was published in the late 1950's as a recipe of the day in a Texas newspaper, can't remember the woman's name but she was a home maker and submitted the recipe which used a bar a bar of Baker's German's Chocolate, the recipe spread throughout the country and is still popular today, the name having changed to German Chocolate Cake. I guess now you have my taste buds going I know what I am making for my next cake. Thanks for the memory.
Yummy, one of my favorite recipes 😋, Thanks Tammy and Chris. 😊❤🙏
Ms. Ruby
My mom only ever made it as a round 2 layer cake without frosting the sides. It sure brings back memories though.
Yum!😋
Looks dreamy. My birthday is in April. Just saying…….
Oh this cake looks good Tammy. I am not a coconut fan but my mom used to make these and I loved them. I was trying to print off the recipe but I must be doing something wrong. Will keep trying. Mrs Steve
Thank you.
Chris, I'm with you... There is no way you can have too much icing on a German chocolate cake!
Thanks so much for the sheet cake version Tammy! It saves about 30 minutes because I fuss with the layers so that they are perfect, so I don't make it that often.
My 2 favorite cakes, are German chocolate and carrot cake.
YASSS! It’s light brown and familiar looking. 🙌🏽❤
Tammy that is one of my favorite cakes ever. Never made it from scratch before. It looks delicious😋
Melissa, you should give it a try!
@@CollardValleyCooks Tammy the cake you made today for your family looked amazing and the tips you told us about making more cake mix is so good . Never enough cake mix in boxes nowadays. Thanks and the icing looked delicious. I could eat it all by it’s self😋
That looks scrumptious!❤
My mother didn't like chocolate, yet she loved German chocolate cake. I think part of it was she loved pecans and coconut. She was part German, and her grandmother used to make this for her when she was little. I'm going to try this recipe. It looks so tasty. I wish my mom was still here to taste it too. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.
German Chocolate cake was my dad’s favorite cake too. His granny used to make him one every year. This looks delicious! Thanks for sharing. ❤
Can l have some ? Oh man it looks so good.
Tammy, your Valentine’s dog with the heart headband is the cutest!!! I love it. ❤️😇 Cake is gorgeous too. Love the way that batter looks
I making the cake part. That was a beautiful batter. My family doesn’t like coconut.
I've never seen a mixer like that! Love it!
Can I use a glass lasagna pan to cook this in? Or a tube cake pan? That's my choices, what do you suggest? Thank you. I look forward to trying your recipes, they all look delicious 😋
The glass pan would be my choice
I made my Aunts homemade German chocolate cake with this icing for a friends daughters husband at their wedding and it was divine! The best cake ever! I doubled the recipe because of needing more but did sheet cake n cut into u shape! So many people wanted me to make them one but I was not for hire! Lol but it is very much like this one! Only use 2 1/4 cups flour! Our pastor gets a single cake for his birthday most years! Depends on how good he is! Lol! No sometimes we are gone for the holidays but he gets at least one a year!
I was sick the past few days.... I've been watching nothing but Collard Valley Cooks (when I was awake) to help me get through my cold/ flu stuff. On the mend now. Thanks for reminding/ showing all of us of how are mommas (in my case, my dad) used to cook. My dad was the cook of the family and I hope I took after him. I cook for my family, too. Your cooking looks a lot like my dad's. Good ole' southern cooking. Thanks, Tammy and Chris... for wonderful cooking content!
Sorry to hear that you were sick but glad you watched the videos!
My oldest son loves German chocolate cake. I always use box cake mix and icing to make one for him. I need to use your recipes for the cake and icing. Because yours looks so delicious.
My favourite. Tammy, you made me drool, big time. Thanks so much.
cute outfit! Cake looks yummy!
My neighbor gave me the recipe to that icing and hinted for me to bake her one so I did and they loved it and I haven't made another one since and now I'm thinking I should lol but anyway her recipe must not have been her mama's cuz it's exactly like yours!
My favorite cake!! Looks good Tammy.
German chocolate is my all time favorite. Thank you for sharing. Yummy 😋
You folks are the best. Thank you.
This is one of my favorite cakes ever! Your cake looks very delicious!
Ms. Tammy, you and Chris are two of the hardest working home cooks on YT in my opinion. Y'all are always putting out good videos that are delicious dishes and quite often, as well. I really appreciate y'all. And Chris, I'm in your camp cause German Chocolate Cake is my all time favorite cake! It's so so good and now I want a piece so bad I can't stand it. I'm going to bake me one tomorrow. I have everything needed in my pantry. God bless y'all.
My daddy’s favorite cake he loved it mine too lol no we never used German chocolate either
My favorite cake, too! Thank you, Tammy
This is my husbands favorite cake also, I put a homemade chocolate buttercream frosting and then the coconut/pecan topping! It is so decadent and delicious cake! I just put a thin layer with half the sugar in the buttercream so it's not as sweet, it's all up to your taste.
This cake looks so delicious if i could I 'd jump into the center and eat my way out haha just joking but for real it so beautiful.ps your daughter Amy birthday cake was amazing also
Looks delicious
oh my goodness i have to make me one .cake is my favorite food group ,lol ,love ya Tammy and Chris
😂
My mammy always made German Chocolate cake. I haven’t had one since she passed away. I may have to give your recipe a try.😊
Cold glass of milk would go good with it
It looks so delicious! I kept waiting to see if you were gonna give your husband a bite! LOL! Thank you for sharing this recipe with us.
looks awesome
I always cook mine homemade ❤
This is my favorite cake! I've never had one from scratch, though, so I plan to make your recipe over the winter holidays this year. I do have a question for you: You're using all purpose flour but you added baking soda, baking powder, and salt to the flour. Is that because there's a good bit of powdered chocolate in the dry ingredients? Am I missing something in the video? (That would NOT surprise me! 😁) Thank you, l love love love your videos!
