Rest In Peace Phyllis. 🙏🏾 You taught me how to make the best cakes, pies and breads that I’ve ever tasted. UA-cam won’t be the same without you, what a light you shined onto the world with your gift of love and culinary excellence. Thanks for everything. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to the Stokes family and friends at this very difficult time. She suffers no more, and is in heaven with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Until we see her again, may she rest in eternal peace. ✝️💟☮️

It was created by Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker from Dallas, Texas; it appeared on June 3, 1957, as the "Recipe of the Day" in The Dallas Morning News. This recipe used the baking chocolate introduced 105 years prior and became quite popular. The baker who developed the chocolate, Samuel German, was given credit even though a woman created the recipe because he worked for the company who made the chocolate. General Foods, which owned the Baker's brand at the time, took notice and distributed the cake recipe to other newspapers in the country. (reference Wikipedia)

I still remember the first time my mother made this cake in the mid 1950's. A few years later, I was allowed to make one on my own. I did so well that mom let me graduate from cakes and cookies. I could finally make our meals as well. You have to understand that while I watched my mom cook, when she let me start cooking, I was on my own. She always told me what to do and then went into the other room while I cooked.
We continued to get the recipe off the pkg for many years. Then one time in the late 80's or 90's, the recipe was missing!!! Thank you for sharing. I have missed it very much. I will surprise 2 of my brothers with this very soon!!!

This is my favorite cake ever. Made it once years ago and was not pleased with how it turned out. Was my Grandfathers birthday and when i told him I had messed it up he started going through my kitchen cabinets until he found it. Needless to say he took it home, mess and all! I have not made it for over 20 years because it took so many bowls, but you solved that problem for me. It is on the horizon. I too think it is the best thing I ever tasted.
    RIP soft spoken Phyllis!

    I ran across this:
Its roots can be traced back to 1852 when American baker Samuel German developed a type of dark baking chocolate for the Baker's Chocolate Company. The brand name of the product, Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate, was named in honor of him.[2]
On June 3, 1957, a recipe for "German's Chocolate Cake" appeared as the "Recipe of the Day" in The Dallas Morning News.[3] It was created by Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker from 3831 Academy Drive, Dallas, Texas.[3] This recipe used the baking chocolate introduced 105 years prior and became quite popular. General Foods, which owned the Baker's brand at the time, took notice and distributed the cake recipe to other newspapers in the country. Sales of Baker's Chocolate are said to have increased by as much as 73% and the cake would become a national staple. The possessive form (German's) was dropped in subsequent publications, forming the "German Chocolate Cake" identity and giving the false impression of a German origin.[4][5][2]
The recipe still remains popular to this day and has been adopted by baking companies.
June 11 is National German Chocolate Cake Day in America.[6]

OMG!!!!! I have been looking for an original from scratch recipe for my favorite cake in the world German Chocolate. My aunt made this cake from scratch and took the recipe with her when she passed. Ms Phyllis when I say you are the best I mean the best. I made this cake twice, the first time it was delicious and rich oh my goodness, but when you say you have to follow the recipe to a tee it is just that, it was moist the first time but the second time I really paid attention to sifting the flour and folding in the beaten eggs it was so moist the second time I could barely keep it together. The icing was amazing the whole cake was simply scrumptious I ate the whole darn thing in three days with the help of my daughter. I now understand why my aunt would not allow anyone in the kitchen while she made this cake it was just that serious and it does take work she put a lot of love and care in this cake and so did you thank you from the bottom of my heart and stomach too!! :)

It was a big hit with the family! Thank you for such a great video...you give clear & precise directions. Your video was very easy to follow. I was a cake decorator for 15 yrs and I can't believe I never made a German Chocolate cake. I normally didn't like the German cake in the box it always seemed kind of dry. But this cake was moist & super delicious. We loved it and highly recommend it!!!

my husbands fav cake for his birthday from the time he was a child was German Chocolate cake made by his grandmother... he's never had one that was as good since she past years ago.. till now.. I made this & followed your advise (yes I beat egg whites stiff too) you were so so so right this is without a doubt the best cake I've ever had (I like pies much better than cake) but wow the texture, taste, smell.. everything about it works... I did make the sheet cake but I want to do the layer one soon too
one more thing... we did share with a group of people, everyone ...went mad for it too
I am now asked to "please make that addictive cake again" thank you~!

    • @PhyllisStokes
      @PhyllisStokes  8 років тому +1

+planetjazzy Wonderful, so glad the cake was a success. If you make the cake in 3 layers use the 9" cake pans and be sure to line the bottom with wax paper so there is no issue with them coming out of the pans. I actually think making the cake in three layers is best because that way the icing makes the cake even more moist. Making in sheet cake form is really my "lazy way" of doing it plus it's much easier to freeze cutting the pieces from the pan.

Hello Mrs. Stokes! I'm about to watch your video again because after watching your video and making the German chocolate cake for my husband's birthday in April, my son asked me to bake this cake for his birthday! I made the cake the first time on a Friday and on a Sunday my husband drove us to the supermarket because he wanted ANOTHER one. It was THAT GOOD. Thank you for this fantastic video. Many Blessings!

Hi Phyllis! :D I made your German Chocolate Cake and Coconut Pecan Frosting today, and it was AMAZING!! Your recipe is better than I remember it growing up. The recipes/mixes and ready made frostings out there just cannot compare to old-fashioned, from scratch goodness, with a healthy sprinkle of love, of course. Thanks again! This will be my go to recipe from now on. ;D Michelle
