- The BEST German chocolate cake: This rich and tender German chocolate cake is slathered in a coconut pecan caramel frosting that’s beyond addictive and totally delicious! The cake itself has a light chocolate taste and is SO moist, and delicate that it nearly defies the laws of physics.
You'll have to invite people over to help you eat it so you can't devour the whole thing!
German chocolate cake is named after Samuel German, the inventor of a type of dark chocolate (not the country). It’s also one of my favorites! Once you make the icing, you’ll be adding it to cupcakes and ice cream in no time! I also love how there's no worrying about cake decorating one this one since it's meant to have a totally rustic look.
I used light brown sugar for the frosting BUT and loved the caramel flavor it brought but you can use white sugar for that tradtional German chocolate frosting.

I've been making this very special cake for almost 20 years! I ALWAYS make the frosting first, to add the wonderful aroma to my house as I make the batter. This gives the frosting a chance to cool down. I make this cake by request from friends who brag about it. I am known as "German Chocolate Cake" Jeff. Yes I am proud of my work! You've done well also!
You should post a recipe
do you follow this recipe or have your own? this is my boyfriend’s favorite cake and i’m trying to learn how to make one for his birthday next month 😊

Made this for my mother’s birthday every year! Your changes adding the extra chocolate and coffee(!!!) puts it over the top! How I wish mom was still here so I could make it for her! It will be made in her honor! Thank you! What a terrific baker!
This is not quite traditional they use a darker chocolate cake. I loved America’s Test Kitchen recipe, as well. leitesculinaria.com/2974/recipes-german-chocolate-cake.html

...sending memories...my Mom would make this cake also....so good....💓❤️💕💔
As an okay cook I struggled with this recipe so much but the end result was so worth it. Not doing it again any time soon, but I enjoyed it so much
I have been making German chocolate cake for many years, I've tried many recipes. Honestly my search is over. This is the best one I've ever made. The doing the eggs separately is a game changer
Hack: If you run out of parchment paper, coffee filters fit perfectly in 8 inch pans
coffee filters aren't designed to go in the oven - their porous structures also aren't waxed coated - bad idea.
@@ShadowPoet it's just an alternative in case you run out of parchment paper one day. I've done it many times with no problems
Do you prepare the filters in any way?
@@DavidBrowningBYD I butter the pan as usual then place a filter. Then I butter the pan again on top of the filter before pouring the batter
Lenisha T - Thanks for the tip!
I love love love your style of videos! I especially like that you don't hide when you spill a little or think something through later, it really is confidence building to know that I don't have to get it perfect everytime to get delicious results!
I agree! It's super nice to know that seasoned chefs spill a little / make mistakes too! I hope to see this blooper video. You're funny as is!
I soon enjoy your baking "style". It is a pleasure to watch!! Thank you!
Yes, this channel reminds me of how to cook that 💖

I made this and delicious!!!! So light and fluffy! Also, I didnt have evaporated milk so I used heavy whipping cream and it was a great substitute. The cake was a hit!
I like that you don't cut out the spilling, the broken eggs or other little mishaps, that makes it so much more fun and relatable. ❤
Lol. Right? The sigh when he spilled the coffee. So funny because we can all relate. 😆
"Like those baby sea turtles... some are gonna make it"..🤣... ahhh ...I adore you
Calu Mac Alpine yessss! I died laughing when he said this lol
And then the music swells.......

I agree he is really adorable
Every time I fold batter, baby sea turtles come to mind.
I'm so glad you made this! It was the cake I requested every year for my bday. My Mom made it so many times she didn't measure anything or have a recipe. I would ask her how much of flour, etc. and she would always say 'Put in 'til you think' lol She passed away recently so this means a lot. Thank you!💕💖💕
LOL If you never have German Chocolate Cake Where has you being? Your tutorials and recipes are amazing, but your personality makes it shine even more.
I just discovered your channel last month and I am delighted to be catching up on all your videos. I am so happy to see a person cooking things and leaving all the spills and messes as they happen. I appreciate you being so genuine and vulnerable there. I swear it makes me feel so much better about myself in the kitchen knowing you turn out all this gorgeous food and sometimes made a mess or a mistake to get there. Thank you so much!

Whoaa
That actually does wowww
Wowww
Hahaha I died at your sigh when the coffee got all over the counter. I felt that in my soul 😂 I can never pour things from measuring cups even without half of it running down the side and on the counter lol.
Brycie Cook The solution for this actually is pretty easy, just pour the liquid more forcefully or “confidently” because it breaks its surface tension and therefore; no liquid running down your cup :)

You make me so happy! I made your carrot cake with my mother and it was heavenly and we were so proud. You make your videos so pleasant and a joy to follow!
Best German chocolate cake ever doesn’t begin to describe this cake. I made it for my husband’s birthday cake in December and he is still raving about it. So moist and the icing really is amazing. Thank you so much for this recipe. It’s a keeper
Update: i Made it!
Omg!!!! Taste so good my new favorite cake thank you so much Sir best baking instructor ever😊😊😊
This was the exact recipe my Nana gave to my mom when she married my dad and said, "This is what he gets on his birthday." Cut to my birthday cakes years later and this is always what I wanted too. It's our "standard" birthday cake and always gets a "wow" from anyone who hasn't had it before. Thanks for sharing what has (felt like) a special secret baking recipe that I always wanted to share with the world.
I love your videos, just finished watching 4 or 5 of them to get good baking tips. I love that you don't completely cut out your mishaps, its what we all do! Your directions are clear and concise. Took notes and will be trying some of your recipes soon. I look forward to looking at more from you!!!!!
The music after the turtle comment was hilarious! Well done 🐢
😂
Classic!
"and by would i mean i did, several times." 😂 Thank goodness I'm not the only one eating half of my batter raw. But it's just "trying" it, you know, making sure it tastes right.
It's all about the quality control 😂.
Exactly! 😁
I love him so much! I love the way he explains everything! Because I'm teaching myself how to bake and him telling me everything is essential for me to learn and some videos I've watched don't explain their tricks and leave out steps.. I first found him when looking up how to make flat cakes! Which I tried out the tin foil and paper towel technique and it REALLY WORKS! and explaining why it works makes so much more sense now.. I just wish I could meet him in person and do a cake together so I can have first hand experience with a real pro!
I just made this for my husband and I have never liked German chocolate cake but THIS!? I fell in love. First off I used my cheaper cake pans ( because I had three of them) and I spooned the thick batter so that edges were rounded up and every layer came out perfect. Very much like red velvet cake! I was AMAZED!!! I only used one batch of frosting ( Wich was not as thick as yours) but came out WONDERFULLY. Had more than enough frosting! This cake! Took the CAKE! LOL😁🙏😁💜💜💜💜🧡🧡🧡🧡💜🥰I've told you before and I will tell you again, I come to you because you tell everything!!!! and so the recipe is dependable.
I love watching your videos. You are very informative and you have a calming spirit. Thanks.
I was asked to make several mini desserts for an engagement party (which ended up being a wedding). I decided to make mini cupcakes with this recipe. This was my first time making German chocolate cake, but thanks to your recipe and video, they came out amazing! Thank you for sharing your talents with us!!
How was the test?
I love your channel, so intelligent, elegant, and friendly. What a fun watch! I'm learning so much.
I made this cake for my father’s birthday yesterday and it was absolutely delicious. The coconut-pecan frosting is so yummy; I almost didn’t put it on the cake and eat it by the spoonful...lol German Chocolate cake is his favorite and I will be making like this for now on, thank you!
I’ve seen your strawberry frosting video and this is my second one to date. I love you. I’m making a German chocolate cake TODAY and I believe this is going to turn out outstanding!
He's such a cooking nerd, I love that passion.
You are so messy and have so positive attitude at the same time that you are a joy to watch. God bless you and your family!
I made this for my husband's birthday. We both thought it was incredible. Thank you!!
I’m a baker and I spent an afternoon making this fabulous cake. It was so worth the time and effort. I used the strips for the first time and my layers sunk in the middle, but because I live in a high altitude, that sometimes happens. My mom said it was one of the best cakes she had ever had. Not the best German chocolate cake she ever had, but one of the BEST cakes she ever tasted. I left it on the counter in my cake dome and for the short time it stayed there, each slice was just as moist as the first day I made it. Delicious!!
I will try your recipe. I have loved this cake since I was a kid in the 1960s. My mother used to make it for my dad on his birthday and sometimes on Father's Day. Its the gooey coconut and almond filling I love the best. Sometimes my mother would frost the outside with a rich fudge like frosting. Roses deli in Portland, Oregon used to make a four layer cake at their restaurant. Now some other bakery makes it and its not as good. When I make my version I toast the coconut a bit to give it a different taste and texture.
While I was watching you stir in the pecans and coconut I remember a cookie from my childhood that I haven't had in a long time. Its called a no-bake chocolate cookie with coconut and peanut butter. They are easy to make. You start off with a lot of white sugar and a bit of water to make a sugar syrup and then you take the sugar syrup off the heat and add milk, peanut butter, coconut (or nuts) and spoon it on to wax paper. The key is work quickly so the cookies mixture doesn't firm up. The other important thing is that the sugar syrup needs to boil for exactly 1 minute so you don't have a granular taste to it and that the cookie will set up properly. My mother found the recipe in some magazine back in the 1950s. Give it a try!
Thanks for sharing your recipe for German Chocolate Cake. Always love watching your videos and learning new things.
I love how you are honest in your videos with all those fun spills and flour clouds! Never change.
I thought you were eyeballing the flour until I saw the scale underneath😂 I was like “Wow he’s good”. But you’re still good and I’m binge watching 😂
"like those baby sea turtles some of them are going to make it" I cant
😆
😂 I laughed at that part too. It was sad, I felt bad for laughing afterwards 😩😂
I have never commented on a UA-cam Channel but I just had to today. I've been watching you for years and I adore you! You are so calming, authentic and real and I laugh at loud evey time I watch one of your videos. Please don't ever change! And...the cake looks so amazing! As usual! I am so excited to make this authentic version. My Brother's birthday is after Thanksgiving and every year he wants a German Chocolate Cake and I still haven't found the perfect recipe. It's an American cake, the chocolate used in the cake was developed by an American man, Samuel German. The recipe for the cake was developed by a Mrs. George Clay (ahhhh, the patriarchy) in 1957.
Cecilia Glanville LOL...It not the Patriarchy. Bakers Chocolate wanted the recipe to promote their product German’s chocolate. It was all about selling the chocolate.
PS - The frosting is the best part of the cake.
