Best German chocolate cake ever doesn’t begin to describe this cake. I made it for my husband’s birthday cake in December and he is still raving about it. So moist and the icing really is amazing. Thank you so much for this recipe. It’s a keeper
I will try your recipe. I have loved this cake since I was a kid in the 1960s. My mother used to make it for my dad on his birthday and sometimes on Father's Day. Its the gooey coconut and almond filling I love the best. Sometimes my mother would frost the outside with a rich fudge like frosting. Roses deli in Portland, Oregon used to make a four layer cake at their restaurant. Now some other bakery makes it and its not as good. When I make my version I toast the coconut a bit to give it a different taste and texture. While I was watching you stir in the pecans and coconut I remember a cookie from my childhood that I haven't had in a long time. Its called a no-bake chocolate cookie with coconut and peanut butter. They are easy to make. You start off with a lot of white sugar and a bit of water to make a sugar syrup and then you take the sugar syrup off the heat and add milk, peanut butter, coconut (or nuts) and spoon it on to wax paper. The key is work quickly so the cookies mixture doesn't firm up. The other important thing is that the sugar syrup needs to boil for exactly 1 minute so you don't have a granular taste to it and that the cookie will set up properly. My mother found the recipe in some magazine back in the 1950s. Give it a try!
I just made this for my husband and I have never liked German chocolate cake but THIS!? I fell in love. First off I used my cheaper cake pans ( because I had three of them) and I spooned the thick batter so that edges were rounded up and every layer came out perfect. Very much like red velvet cake! I was AMAZED!!! I only used one batch of frosting ( Wich was not as thick as yours) but came out WONDERFULLY. Had more than enough frosting! This cake! Took the CAKE! LOL😁🙏😁💜💜💜💜🧡🧡🧡🧡💜🥰I've told you before and I will tell you again, I come to you because you tell everything!!!! and so the recipe is dependable.

I’m a baker and I spent an afternoon making this fabulous cake. It was so worth the time and effort. I used the strips for the first time and my layers sunk in the middle, but because I live in a high altitude, that sometimes happens. My mom said it was one of the best cakes she had ever had. Not the best German chocolate cake she ever had, but one of the BEST cakes she ever tasted. I left it on the counter in my cake dome and for the short time it stayed there, each slice was just as moist as the first day I made it. Delicious!!

I never expected to enjoy your videos when I watched my first one. 10 videos later I must say you explain things well, make delicious food, and have a very personable demeanor.
I just baked this cake for my daughter's bday and it turned out delicious! The grocery only had semi-sweet baker's chocolate (56% cocoa) so that's what I used and the cake came out great with the perfect amount of sweetness, The cake had a light texture and not dense at all, with a nice light chocolate flavor unlike regular chocolate cake and wasn't overly sweet. The frosting is so tasty and compliments the cake perfectly. I made a simple, not too sweet chocolate buttercream to put on the sides of the cake because there wasn't enough coconut-pecan frosting. i would definitely rate this cake a solid 8/10. It's guaranteed to please everyone and passes the clean plate test! This cake was perfect with a nice hot cup of coffee!
I made this for my husband's birthday and added a German Chocolate Buttercream Frosting... he said it was the best cake I've ever made! WINNING! And thank you for breaking the steps down for the occasional baker. You made it so easy to follow along. 🎂💗
I baked this cake for my babies’ dedication and it was a hit! Everyone was raving about it. I used gluten-free flour and no one could tell it was a gluten-free cake. Used evaporated milk and sour cream instead of buttermilk. And used chopped toasted hazelnuts in place of pecans… It is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever made! Thank you!
Omg I want that in my belly! Headed to the grocery for the ingredients!! Cake strips soaking! Baby sea turtles everywhere!! Lolol! Love your videos! 😎🌞👍🏻
I'm german and from the thumbnail i was like "hm?". Good you explained that 😅 german cakes btw are "black forest cake" for example or "lubeck marzipan cake" or "Baumkuchen" or "Frankfurer Kranz" or, or, or... 🙂
Have you watched John's Black Forest Cake video? I'd love to know what you think. It's one of my most absolute favorite cakes in the World, however I'm certain that I've only had the 'American' version. John used Kirsche(?) and fresh cherries, whereas most "American" cakes I've had have used maraschino cherries and am doubtful about the cherry syrup. I'm now worried that I've been eating the wrong version of this cake 😂
Fond memories growing up in the early 70s with my mom during the holidays... She used to make literally dozens and dozens of 3 layer german chocolate cakes to give away as Christmas gifts... coffee filters aren't designed to go in the oven - their porous structures also aren't waxed coated - bad idea.

I’ve made this twice now. My family raves over this cake. Thanks for the recipe and making me look good lol
Made this today and it's delicious. I am diabetic so I reduced the overall sugar by 3/4 cup but still came out great. Thank you.
"like those baby sea turtles some of them are going to make it" I cant
😆
😂 I laughed at that part too. It was sad, I felt bad for laughing afterwards 😩😂
You are a pleasure to watch. Beautiful energy. Keep shining bright
My Mom made this for my birthday every year when i was a kid. Pure ❤️
I love how you are honest in your videos with all those fun spills and flour clouds! Never change.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Now, another request. I need 'Preppy Merch'. Coffee mug, apron and a few 'Preppy Tools'. That would separate you from the other channels.
I am so excited to make this authentic version. My Brother's birthday is after Thanksgiving and every year he wants a German Chocolate Cake and I still haven't found the perfect recipe. Your video inspired me to try this "original" version. By the way everyone if you go Preppy Kitchen's recipe link to print it, at the top it allows you to change the servings with a click of the button! Now I don't want that for this recipe but other's YES! that is an awesome feature. Thank you!
Germany is known for its tropical weather and coconut trees, afterall.
:D
🤣
Annnnd you didn't watch it b/c he says it's NOT named for Germany but for a man named German. *eyeroll*

@@RaeJae3089 I'm making fun of people who think coconuts are from Germany. Maybe learn the definition of sarcasm before commenting.
I made this German Chocolate cake for my son for his birthday. It was amazing! I think I could took a bath in the batter !
Thank you so much!
It looks delicious 😋
I love anything chocolate
Great! And you used the baking strips! ( I always use them. I bought them after watching your show) LOL about the egg whites omlet. Black Forest cake next?
Me toooo! Love black forest cake! My other favorite! !
Black Forest Cake, my second favorite after German Chocolate. You're scoring major brownie points...just sayin'. 😉
One of my favorite cake
@@loriallen7651 Oh, speaking of brownies...!!!???
Jhon to be honest after a bad day watching u cook really calms my mind
Holy cow, I don’t think I’ll ever make German chocolate cake any other way after finding this recipe! This is amazing, I couldn’t find the Baker’s German’s sweet chocolate so I subbed it with ghirardelli semisweet chocolate bar. This really is the perfect German chocolate cake recipe. 🖤
The German chocolate is best. Hope you can find it for next time.
I was freaking out at the consistency of my batter! Thank you for this video; I almost cried when I watched it : )
*The editing quality really got up.*
*Keep it up*
Love this guy. Reminds me of son-in-law. Don't have all that fancy equipment and do the recipes by hand, but all have turned out. So enjoy sense of humor. Working today on 'poppa's birthday' cake.
"Why didn't I use melted butter???" Man, I love this guy!
I love your channel, so intelligent, elegant, and friendly. What a fun watch! I'm learning so much.
This looks fantastic! Thank you so much for the recipe. And my heartfelt gratitude for mentioning that German Chocolate Cake is not from Germany! Common misconception.
@@PreppyKitchen only by Americans. Germans have literally never heard of it. I mean it contains pecans. Pecans are native to North America. They are so expensive here and hard to find. I will definitely need to make a German Chocolate Cake on my channel at some point. Just for clarity's sake. 😁
Ive seen it for sale in bakeries in germany, so i assumed it really was named after the country. Guess i was wrong.
YOU ROCK! Thanks for tickling my senses, you are truly a bright light in what feels like a dark world some days...
How many of you LOVE IT when John spills/sprays/breaks stuff, and he gets disgusted with himself!?! Hahahahaha, cracks me up every time!🤣🤣🤣♥️ How many of you expand your vocabulary after watching PreppyKitchen videos!?!👍👏💥♥️
i enjoy your videos and i would like the recipe for the german chocolate cake so i can bake iy for a dinner i will be having
man i'm glad i came across your channel as i love german chocolate cake because of my grandmother she was an excellent cookwho put so much love into her meals. i never knew that german chocolate was a person until i came to your channel. sir I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I FOLLOW ALL OF YOUR RECEIPES. I THINK THAT YOU'RE SUCH A TALENTED CHEF.
I swear I could watch your videos all day!
Your G.C.C. frosting recipe is THE BEST! LOVE the caramel color/flavor.
“If you haven’t had German chocolate cake, where have you been?”
Me: in Germany not knowing that something like “ German chocolate” even exists
Also I really appreciate that you include measurements in Gramms and Milliliters as well
These videos are made even better when a spill or error is made. It’s very endearing and I live for it. 😂
If you ever need an additional Grandmother.... I’m available. I just adore watching you 🥣🍰
I never expected to enjoy your videos when I watched my first one. 10 videos later I must say you explain things well, make delicious food, and have a very personable demeanor.
I never knew that German was a person. Great cake. Great video!
My favorite cake made by my favorite UA-cam chef ❤️
Thank you
i love the adorable and whimsical music in this video!
His personality is hilarious :)
I made this for my husband's birthday. We both thought it was incredible. Thank you!!
12:00 am.. watching this video! OMG the cake looks sooooo good!!! 😋😋😋 Thanks for all your recipes 💗
I made this for my husband's birthday and added a German Chocolate Buttercream Frosting... he said it was the best cake I've ever made! WINNING!
And thank you for breaking the steps down for the occasional baker. You made it so easy to follow along. 🎂💗
😭 i dont need it... I don't need it...
I NEED IT 😣
Me tooooo!!!!
I baked this cake for my babies’ dedication and it was a hit! Everyone was raving about it. I used gluten-free flour and no one could tell it was a gluten-free cake.
Used evaporated milk and sour cream instead of buttermilk. And used chopped toasted hazelnuts in place of pecans…
It is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever made! Thank you!
Omg I want that in my belly! Headed to the grocery for the ingredients!! Cake strips soaking! Baby sea turtles everywhere!! Lolol! Love your videos! 😎🌞👍🏻
"Like Joy, Joy, Happiness, Endorphins"😄😂 love watching John bake!
Question: how do you stay so gorgeous eating all those pasties!!!!
Normally I would not watch someone like you but you are a very good instructor and baker - i have used your info and made some really good things
I think she turned out about 75 or more each holiday season... she gave our Thermador double ovens a massive work out!
xoxo Randolph
who also notices that in every video he says "MY FAVORITE TYPE OF........" (cake, cookie)
You made me laugh with this video John. Love how you left all the bloopers in. Can't wait to make this cake.
My favorite cake!😊❤️
Been making this since 1960. Always a hit at bake sales. Thanks for the memories.
I love Baker's Joy. It is such a timesaver and it is less messy than tthe old butter and flour routine.
I am so happy that I found your videos. You make me a better baker and always put a smile on my face. German chocolate is my favorite cake. My grandmother made it for my birthday every year.
