Thanks man, been wrestling with this exact decision my entire senior year. Just graduated w a bachelor's in Computer Science and still complacent about it.
Same actually, graduated with software engineering bachelors but i dont enjoy it as much as i enjoy data analytics. The only downside is the pay for data analytics
Hey Greg, thanks for the video and showing the difference between the two. I have a degree in statistics & computer programming and I have been doing more of analytics than coding at work and I was wondering on which path to pursue further. This video has helped me towards taking the right decisions. Thank you.
Do I become a Data Analyst or Front End Developer or Backend Developer? Looking at the one that I can easily absorb and aligns with my personality. I haven’t watch UA-cam videos, but I still can’t make a decision.
I’m bad a math and consider myself a creative guy, but I also interested in using excel and google sheets trying to figure out how to use data efficiently. What career path should I choose?
Hey Greg :3 I've been taking the data analyst path for sometime now and realized that I'm in love with SQL and feel more fascinated by coding and debugging. How should I go about transitioning to a more Backend Dev background with the Data analysis exposure I already have? Or would I have to simply start over from the ground up to better suit my interests?
i have a question , so when you say software engineering isnt it the general name of every stuff like data scientist, ai enginer, web site developer just asking because when you compare software engineering with data scientist i feel like they could be considered as a same think
So as someone who eventually one day wants to work in data science industry, is there an entry level job role that one can apply as a starting point and just get promoted/ level up to a data science in time rather than just trying to apply for a data science position from the get go? I dont mind starting at the bottom and working my way up the ladder.
Try for data analyst role. You need Excel, Tableau/PowerBi and SQL. You can get this job in 3 months. After getting your first job start learning Python and prepare the skills needed for data engineering job. You can switch to DE after 1-1.5 years of experience.
@@sr-xd8jb Are there any alternatives to Excel, and Tableau/ PowerBi?? I have linux so i cant use Excel and i cant afford Tableau. Is there anything free i can use?

Hey, great video! One quick question. You mentioned entry level data analystics postions are often acquired through Google Data Analytics Certificates. Is that still the trend today?
I'm majoring in Computer Science as an undergraduate and I have to decide on specializing in Software Development or in Administration, Management and Exploitation of Data. I really like coding, but I found out in school that I'm actually pretty good in SQL. Working in data interests me a lot and I'm interested in Data Science, however, I don't know which specialty would work best for me. I heard that most jobs in Data Science and Data Architecture prefers people with Masters or Doctorate degrees. I know that I don't want to pursue a Master's degree after finishing my Bachelor's degree. Is there any advice that you could tell me to help me decide on which specialty to chose? It's so hard when I'm interested in both.
Definitely the machine learning heavy roles often require masters or PhD. There's still many SQL style jobs, especially in data engineering, that don't require further education. Hope that helps :)
i have a question not really related i think.. i have experience as back end developer however i wont lie im becoming stressed of it even though i could do it, i was thinking of just taking quality assurance or just data analyst is it viable for me even though i don't have any experience in as that? also is it more fun in that career?
In my experience, quality assurance is very high pressure. If you end up at the wrong company, you can end up being more or less forced to approve software you don't have time to test. Then, you're the scapegoat when the customer inevitably runs into serious bugs.
i think you should make visuals, graphs, tables that will differentiate these concepts and show the pros and cons or advantages and disadvantages etc rather than just verbal explanation. because honestly its hard to understand and after the video i was still not enlightened. thank you
Hi Greg - I'm a CPA in accounting tussling to move between data analytics or software engineering. I was being told that my background would logically fit to a transition in data analytics. But i'm not sure since i'm more of a creative type but also like detective stuff (like finding stuff via evidence) so I'm not sure.... what would you suggest a good path to figure this out is?. What's the growth potential comparing both - could you offer any insights into that. Awesome video - Thank you!!
Growth potential for both is plenty. I do feel like your skillset would translate quicker to analytics, but I encourage you to do whatever you feel is the best choice 😃
Theres a lot of universities. Like mine. That offer a data science degree. It’s content is basic coding, statistics (lots of statistics), data analysis, machine learning etc.
Nice, I'm an introvert too lol. Probably the software engineer because there's less chance of graph-like presentations that come up a lot in analytics. You won't escape all the talking though haha. Entrepreneurship is the way to go for that one!

a degree hold more weight and credibility. because it says how responsible of a person you are. if you don't have that, you must make it up with heavy experience

Ooooh. Asking this same question. Have you decided or taken a path yet?
Hi Greg, now I am working as a oracle sql developer in CTS. Which role is more good for transition, is it data analyst or software developer?
Database developer with diverse SQL dialects. You will earn more than data analyst

That would be the ideal degree probably
Hello, I'm from Bangladesh. My question, can a data analyst work as a software engineer?
Does this apply to QA Automation and Manual QA? Also are QA Engineers/Testers seen as Engineers?
Hmm there's sometimes a bit of a bias against them, it depends on the job and it depends who you ask
@@GregHogg are they seen as Engineers or just testers in the industry
Will i get a job if i persure Undergraudate degree in Computer Science and Masters degree in Data Science?

Probably software, more jobs in general.

Lots of variation. Also, excellent username!
Does a data scientist job specifically requires a computer science degree ?
No, but that's certainly a great degree to get for it
