Hendrix was a genius, period. No one can argue that. But Living Colour is by far the best band I've seen on stage . They are absolutely incredible. And I just feel sorry for people who still don't know it.
These Brothers did one of the best renditions of 'Power of Soul' from throw back Jimi Hendrix and most impressive when they took that guitar rift to another level of modern Afro-Infusion. I love these Brothers because they were truthful yet charismatic with African style. Ow!!!
Living Colour is a great band from New York City, formed in 1984. The band currently consists of guitarist Vernon Reid, lead vocalist Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish. ~ Vernon Alphonsus Reid (born 22 August 1958) is an English-born American guitarist and songwriter. Reid is the founder and primary songwriter of the rock band. Reid was named No. 66 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. ~ Critic Steve Huey writes, "[Reid's] rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from heavy metal and punk to funk, R&B and avant-garde jazz, and his anarchic, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well." ~~ 🎸🎼
Amazing how they could make cover songs their own. . . One of my favorite bands ever. I have seen them countless times and I was never disappointed. Not once. They always play clubs. And they are the kindest and most accessible group of musicians you could ever meet.
I remember my mom buying me the Band Of Gypsies Live at the Fillmore East CD, and and this Power Of Soul standing out to me for it’s very Bluesy intro. I worked at learning to play it. Vernon undoubtedly knows how to play it in the style of Jimi, but I love that he did the guitar in his own style, keeping it recognizable.
To me the color of you're skin has nothing to do with music. The first time i heard Living Colour was on Q107 a Toronto fm radio station. They played cult of personality, that song blew me away.I bought "VIVID" about a week later, they are still one of my favorite bands.Vernon Reid is one of the greatest guitarists i've ever heard. There is one song i would love Living Colour to cover ,Jimi's "Peace In Mississippi" Thanx
If anyone has ever EARNED the RIGHT to attempt to touch the sacred music of James Marshall Hendrix, it's definitely Living Colour. We all know NO ONE will ever touch the Band of Gypsys, so don't even compare Living Colour to them. HOWEVER, Living Colour takes us on their OWN journey. Listen with your spirit and RESPECT Living Colour's excellent skill and SOUL, as they pay tribute to the MASTER, Jimi Hendrix.
Thank you for suggesting changing the settings. It synched up the soundtrack to the video, which really enhanced the viewing & listening exprience. I thought the Band of Gypsys played the definitive version of this song until today. Living Colour may not have played it flawlessly, but neither did Hendrix. It's wild & wooly & full of raw intense power. Serious rock, amigos.
Great great version. Vernon Reid other worldly face during the lengthy solo riffing madly without looking at the neck was simply freakish incredible as is this powerhouse version!! Lover living color they deliver live
PeterC12853 he CAN seem to play two scales at once, his fingers just a nanosecond ahead of our ears, somehow. And the band is a machine, rhythmically and harmonically. Wish Jimi could've heard this!
Very well said my friend. Jimi, in his most true nature, was "over the top." To do justice to Jimi's spirit is to connect with that rhythm section the way Vernon does, while pushing the limits of one's ability and technique. Hence, this is a perfect tribute, performed in te spirit of Jimi's music and his approach to performance, and the basis of metal and hard rock playing.
aaarrggghhh that's the stuff, I love Hendrix and I love Vernon that was a great way to start the day ,thanks for putting this clip out there, power of soul to all Living Colour fans.
just saw them at experience hendrix in akron,oh. I cant believe i didnt know about vernon b4 . amazingly fast......and sounds good as well he has his own style
Some people think shredding Hendrix songs & playing them faster makes em better but it's the "Power Of Soul' Jimi puts into his songs that can't be replicated. Love Living Colour but ain't Jimi but thanks for doing this tributer!~
Feels like Jimi sparkled and.fizzled out too soon! Mostly bored with what was done. He seemed to find some new avenues before he left us! Kinda felt unfullfilled and he did admit he had come full circle in such a short time.
Vernon looked possessed during that solo! His eyes were all rollin' in the back of his head! I thought he was about to have a grand mal. I fuckin' love this band! I love that they love to do covers and make them their own. A couple of other great bands who have a lotta fun with covers are My Morning Jacket and Dave Matthews Band, just to name a couple. I once saw DMB play All Along The Watchtower and during the solo they went into the guitar solo part of Stairway To Heaven!! Same chord changes...three chords. Tim Reynolds tore it up!
@tome0591 very true. I was telling a fellow musician friend about it the other day and found myself gushing about how awesome it was, definitely buying the DVD if they come out with one
yeah man, Vernon is da shit! That's how you play guitar solos! You can have your boring Satrianis Malmsteens whatever. What Vernon is doing is where it's at!
Power of the soul is living like humans again, no wars, no racism, no crime.
Thanks Jimi, Living colour and you out there peaceful soul.
Hendrix was a genius, period. No one can argue that. But Living Colour is by far the best band I've seen on stage . They are absolutely incredible. And I just feel sorry for people who still don't know it.
👍
50 YEARS AGO HENDRIX - THANK U LIVING COLOUR
Vernon has some tight rhythm and unorthodox solo. Great guitarist that doesn't get enough credit.
Vernon Reid is an EXTREMELY underrated guitarist.
These Brothers did one of the best renditions of 'Power of Soul' from throw back Jimi Hendrix and most impressive when they took that guitar rift to another level of modern Afro-Infusion. I love these Brothers because they were truthful yet charismatic with African style. Ow!!!
These brothers made it their own too. Yep
Great band doing a Hendrix masterpiece. The dislikes come from the soulless, and therefore powerless, among us.
I'm a Hendrix disciple and this is a great version!
I came to write basically the same thing lol.
Living Colour did great justice to the Hendrix tune. I wish we had more great rock bands like these guys.
Vernon is so under rated. Indeed with the power of soul every thing is possible.
that guitarist ripped that tune! kept it close to the Hendrix original while keeping his own originality. stellar!
Whew!!!
Song was so ahead of its time, it literally melts metal from the 90s fused with jazzy refrains and psychedelic lyrics.
Such a great band doing justice to a great Hendrix song! WOW!
Tighter than a tight thing . Thanks gentlemen , Jimi must be smiling .
Absolutely the best Jimi Hendrix (and in this case also the Band of Gypsies) cover ever. Thank You, Living Colour.
I hate this why did they do this? RIP Jimi this sucks
You are absolutely right my friend! He does it's with more feeling and more soul than anyone.. except Jimi of course
Randy Hansen does a great cover as well. Vern is the Master.
stratospheric version of Band of Gypsies, just fantastic, many thanks
With the power of you anything you want to do...
Wow this is a difficult song to play. Written and orchestrated by the master Jimi Hendrix . Well done gentlemen 🤘🤘✌🤜🤛👊
🥰

Great performance! !!!
Really powerful ! They do it their way but still maintain a very authentic Hendrix feel. . . way better than so many note-for-note covers. . .
Wow!
Vernon is a genius

Tear that shit up!!!!
Love the way they sing this song.
Vernon is the best imo. Power of soul. When he gets in that soul trance, wow. Corey feeding off of it in this vid.
Vernon is outright sonically sick on this one. ROCK ON LIVING COLOUR! who says a black band can't play ROCK?
