  • In this video you’ll see how I installed a new electric vehicle 50 amp/ 240 volt branch circuit for a new “hard wired” Juice box in Westfield, NJ. Also in this video a new MLO “sub panel” is installed to make room in the main breaker panel for the new circuit breaker(s).

    Always enjoy your videos Ron. My question is why didn’t you move 6 circuits over and sell them a whole home surge protection device as well ? But yeah man I run into a lot of crazy ev charger install projects as well. I’m mostly installing the Tesla super chargers or nema 15/50 receptacles. But that was a nice job man 👍🏼

    Good: it does charge my 2015 Tesla Model S 85 from 16% to 80 in about 4.5hrs (240 circuit, 40A with a 50A breaker), Tech Support easy to reach, 50/50 understanding language
    Bad: software crap. Software doesn't detect current battery level, so you either have to set the starting % in the apk on your phone, every time you charge your EV or accept that the error message you will get from the Juicebox is irrelevant. Fortunately the Tesla apk reported the correct information. I am totally disappointed with the software, and solely for that reason, I would never recommend this product to anyone. The information should simply report what charge was applied but to indicate the current level of the battery state and not be able to read the current state is terrible, for all the money the Juicebox Cost, Shame on ENEX

    Ron, welcome back!
    I hear you about not messing inside of the customer's panel any more than what the scope of your work is, but what I do to protect myself from those exposed bare lugs is that I cover them with squares cut out of Scotch 2228 "raw rubber" tape. They stick to metal very well, and they cold-fuse to each other and themselves, forming a rubber coat around what was a bear lug. I push them in place with a small plastic spatula.
    Have a Merry Christmas, hope to see more of your videos soon!

    Excellent video! Thank you! I am always impressed with your creativity that you use to solve problems. The idea of using the round hole to push your flex into that ceiling cavity, and then over to your access hole was neat to watch. Looked like a challenging installation but you pulled it off and it looks fantastic. Always learning from you.

    Also, (still watching video), check out the Bosch SDS dry coring bits. I keep the 1-9/16 and a few other sizes in my truck, and they are awesome. They eat brick like no one's business. Also, you can get a generic switch for the hotbox for like $12. We had to get one a few months ago

    In the UK they have a nice selection of outdoor rated black round cables that don't need to be in conduit. The cables either have a reinforced jacket or ring of steel cables inside the jacket (steel wire armor cable) to protect against damage. Some cables also include data cables inside to either provide ethernet connectivity or for use to monitor service current draw so that EV charging can be automatically throttled down if the load on the house goes high. Too bad that hasn't seemed to have caught on here yet, as the aesthetics seem to turn out better and installation goes faster.

    • @ronlovell5374
      @ronlovell5374 9 місяців тому

      We have something similar here called Teck. It's basically stainless steel armoured cable with a heavy duty pvc jacket but the conductors are independent and usually the same size, not like your layered cables that require special gland fittings.

    I just had an EVSE installed in my house and before I even started the process of buying an electric car I made sure I had room in my panel for the 50amp circuit. The EV learning curve is steep but important to follow. Great video as always Ron!

      Code requirement.The first panel feed from the meter must have a bonding jumper. Every panel after this panel is considered a sub panel that must have an insulated neutral wire and a ground wire that only feeds a ground bar. In our area the inspector makes you remove the green bonding screw from every sub panel so Johnnie homeowner doesn't install it .
