Been in So Cal since the '60's, grew up on the Hat's pastramis, double-dipped, extra pickles, and a side of aus just AND chile peppers that you bite the tip off and squeeze the juice onto EACH bite! Their gravy or chili fires are EPIC, too!!!
"The Hat is the In-N-Out of pastrami sandwich" pretty much nails it. It's hard to be the best for the best price but both those places manage it with total consistency. What perplexes me is why so many people love to hate them.
When I was a kid, my grandma would buy two pastramis from the Hat, take them home, undo them and heat up the meat again in pan with some water. She would buy rolls for .25 cents at her bakery and make 5 sandwiches for our whole family
I live in Tokyo and grew up in Southern California in the 70s … I grew up eating pastrami sandwiches at my neighborhood burger joint in Torrance similar to Arrs called Ynot Burgers… which was the owners name Tony spelled backwards. I went to college in Pasadena and fell in love with The Hat and a pastrami with large onion rings was one of my favorite go to’s… prices have definitely gone up. There was another place in LA off of Olympic near La Cienega that served a pastrami foot long hot dog wrapped in two ginormous flour tortillas that was almost embarrassing to order but it was delicious. The pastrami is one of those things I miss about eating in LA. Dude, you need to nix the word “cali” but enjoyed the video tremendously. Arigato!
I grew up in Carson and Torrance and remember Ynot! It was a yummy place. But down in Carson, they had a place called Ted's Burgers on Main St. They had a Pastrami exactly like the Hats! But it had more pastrami juice dripped into the bun!
And...I used to work in Redondo and they had a Tomboys that served some Awesome Chili Cheese Frys! And an awesome Carne Asada Quesadilla! But forgive me, we are talking about Pastrami!
@ I remember Ted’s … I went to elementary school at St Philomena and drove or rode my bike many times past that place. Those local burger joints like Ted’s and Ynot are a SoCal staple and had so much variety on their menus. Deep fried beef and bean burritos were also one of my favorites.
Arrys is LEGENDARY.... beats the other two spots by a landslide for this foodie. Also breakfast at Arrys is all day long so you can get you some french toast at 9:00 p.m. if you choose. **Pro Tip** I always get a small cup of pastrami juice on the side at Arrys. It's already the best pastrami sandwich but getting that cup of juice to douse your sandwich takes it to another level
I went to high school in the SGV so Arry's was a common hang out Friday night after football games. Great pastrami and chili cheese fries! That was back when The Hat only had one restaurant in Alhambra. Now that it's a chain The Hat is my go-to for pastrami unless I happen to find myself near Arry's.
Never had Arry's, but it looks pretty great. Hard to imagine it being better than the Hat, but I have yet to hear someone say something bad about them.
@@willpina Arry's is definitely worth a try if you like pastrami. Also try Langers Deli in downtown LA for that thick cut East coast style pastrami on fresh baked rye bread. Soo good!
@rufusmedrano2962 I go to the one in Monterey Park off the 60 Freeway and Atlantic Blvd. I always get a Pastrami, extra packets of mustard, extra pickles on the side and some of those yellow chili peppers and a small drink. I know I can get a refill on my drink so no need to buy a large, lol.
Canters Deli. Pastrami on Jewish rye. Love Johnnie’s a better roll than The Hat. Johnnie’s also served onion rings with yellow mustard, never had that before, that’s mega. Regardless I love all these places. Same with hamburgers and tacos, whatever spin these great people in the food business have, my hats off to them.
I do love Canter's. Lox and bagel.... Which Johnny's you talking about? The one on Adams or Sepulveda. The one on Adams used to be great when it was black owned and you got a pastrami so big it could be split into 3 sandwiches. Since the pandemic, it was closed for awhile and has changed hands. It is now a Jewish deli type place, which is not a bad thing, but nothing like their sandwiches used to be.
Johnny Pastrami on Adam's used to have the best pastrami sandwich ever. Since they have re-opened, the price is outrageous and the sandwich is smaller and mediocre. Don't go there.
I haven't tried the other two, but I LOVE the Pastrami at The Hat. I grew up on Art's Delicatessen's pastrami and I find non-Jewish style Pastriimi sandwiches more to my liking. The Hat also serves you a ridiculous amount of fries in even the small order, and their Onion Rings are to die for as well. I recently found out there's at least one in Ventura County, in Simi Valley. Their burgers are pretty great too, and their Chili Burger is served with a fork and knife.
Growing up in Pico Rivera in the 70s, Omega Burger on Whittier Blvd had the best pastrami dip sandwiches, extra pickles, extra mustard. And an order of onion rings that came in a old school lunch brown bag, double bagged for the grease absorption.
I like the pastrami at Tops. When I worked in Pasadena it was a favorite place to go and their zucchini fries are a great side. The bread is really soft at The Hat and their chili dogs and chili fries are so delicious!
Tried Johnnie's for the first time this summer and it was totally worth the drive. The hype is legit. Some of the most flavorful meat I've ever tasted.
I went to Langer's last week and ordered #19 which costs $29.56. it is loaded and delicious. I definitely will go to Top's or Hat for a lot less. Thanks for shating.
Not to far away from Johnnie's in Culver City is Sorrento's Italian Deli. It's on Sepulveda near Jefferson. My favorite is their half/half, pastrami and peppers & beef. Excellent sandwich IMO.
The sandwiches were stacked extra thick because they knew they were going to be featured in a video. As a regular customer walking in, they don’t stuff the sandwiches with that much pastrami. I’ve been to Tops and the Hat before and my sandwiches never looked that thick.
The pastrami burger from The Hat is probably my favorite Pastrami sandwich/burger thing I've ever had. Lucchese In Sun Valley had my favorite sandwich but they're gone. Que Rico's in San Fernando had the best birria in all of LA. Just drove from Pahrump to Vegas for Tommy Burgers. Yeah, Tommy's. Go for it Vatos.
Love some pastrami, mustard and pickles in a sub. My most fond memory if pastrami was that sub they gave away for free in L.A county parks as some sort of parks and rec program around 1997.
I grew up in Arcadia. I believe my family discovered Tops in the early - mid 80's. That became our pastrami place. We turned on many of our visiting relatives to Tops, they'd take some home with them on their visits and we'd even ship sandwiches to them. We moved away from the area, and found The Hat in Glendora. That was so conveniently located to us, that we nearly forgot about Tops. I'd never heard of Arry's until this video. As far as pastrami sandwiches, I narrowly prefer Tops over The Hat. Tops was always sliced just a little bit thinner than The Hat, so it seemed a little lighter. (in a good way). Now The Hat has far superior chili cheese fries. You can even get them topped with pastrami! I'm out in Orange County now and The Hat is much closer to my home, so I stop in there every so often. Because of The Hat's proximity to my home, The Hat is now the winner. Really, you can't go wrong with either one and if I find myself in the area, I'll stop at Arry's to try it out. Thank you for the tasty video. It's 3 am and now I'm craving a pastrami and chili cheese fries.
I’m so drooling… my. Favorite sandwich is the pastrami… needs to be huge (like the ones you showed)! Where I live in Hawaii no more good pastrami sandwiches 😬
😂 lol I've had the best food here and its not good. And I'm from here. We gotta take it to the southern food. Smh they dishes 🤦 💯 u need a southern to cook the food here 😂. To change up taste buds
Our favorite chili cheese fries is in Torrance. Try Monk's Charburgers on Vermont. Tgey also have delicious Pastrami sandwiches. Also the carne asada tacos is a must
The original Hat is on valley blvd in Alhambra. It is the hamburger stand there still and out door benches for seating. The food is fabulous there from the original location.
I've been to The Hat...loved it thot it was the best I ever had till....I went to the Busy Bee in San Pedro and Santa Fe Importers in Long Beach. Busy Bee by far is No1, Santa Fe Importers is No2 and The Hat is there with a few others down the line.
I go to the Hat in Upland at least once a month, pastrami and wet fries (thick cut fries covered in brown gravy) always, French dip is very good as well. Gonna have to try the others now.
I'd say I drive out of my way for a Hat Pastrami since I live in NorCal and must stop there anytime I'm in SoCAL. Anytime I know a friend is traveling down south always ask if they like Pastrami. Of course I tell them to go to Tommy's Original or Carney or eve Pinks. Oddly enough my goto at Pinks is the Hot Tamales
Okay great video, I was introduced to an American greasy spoon type of pastrami in high school, I attended Montebello High School, and my best friend treated me to one at Arry’s! This was back in the late 70’s and I’d never tasted anything like it, it was huge and it was all mine! Of course as a teenager I had the appetite of a horse and I demolished it and was still hungry afterward. Try a Golden Ox pastrami, it’s located in Montebello also, just down the street from Arry’s actually. Thanks for sharing this video, it brought back a wonderful memory.
I'll be trying Arry's after your review, but you need to try The OiNKSTER in Eagle Rock. not only is the pastrami stellar, but they make all their own condiments from scratch. Their home made catchup with a side of fries is perfect with the pastrami sandwich.
Been in So Cal since the '60's, grew up on the Hat's pastramis, double-dipped, extra pickles, and a side of aus just AND chile peppers that you bite the tip off and squeeze the juice onto EACH bite! Their gravy or chili fires are EPIC, too!!!
Hat in Simi rocks for years pastrami rings 💥
Their endless condiments is welcomed ....
Can't beat their onion rings and CHAR- BROILED burgers!!
The hat has gotten WEAK in their portions! Everytime i get them they're way to small. Not packed like they use to be😎
@mrclean6773 kinda thought that myself ... I get an order of rings so I'm good
Disappointed happens alot nowadays
The hat is good, but certainly not the best.

Simi 💥👍
Wet fries at the Hat with cheese 🔥
Arry's is definitely at the top of my list right now. That sandwich and chili cheese fry combo looked amazing.
Finally THE HAT! Best pastrami for me, double dipped.

their breakfast burritos are like 20lbs lol joking, but theyre massive!!!
Like I said before, you have to go to Johnnie’s in the west side of LA in Culver City since 1952. A “must try”!
Over priced over rated Johnnies
Yes, I have been saying this for years.
you can’t ea your money. It’s the best pastrami in LA, period!
@@ronzo7238 johnnies is the MOST overpriced pastrami sandwitch in la county. Cant eat my money but i can sure spend it somewhere else.

I miss Arry's. Lived nearby for 25 years and always enjoyed their sandwiches and chili cheese fries.
Arry's ROCKS
I've lived in L.A. my entire life (69-years) and never heard of Tops. I'm going there today for lunch. 😋
Okay cause weres tops I only know of the one in Pasadena 💣
@@rosesndiamondz Yes, I meant the same one there in Pasadena.
make sure you get the large fries and zucchini combo
@cerealaugher with the ranch 🤣🤣🤣 and some of dem carrots 🥕
The Hat is the business dipped!!
The Hat by far the best.
I was having InNOut and know I want a pastrami sandwich. You can’t go wrong with the Hat. I have to try the original tops. Great video thanks.
Arrys is great
Sure is
Agree!!
The Hat is good. I used to love Johnnie’s Pastrami when it was off Adams st. In LA.
Johnny Pastrami on Adam's used to have the best pastrami sandwich ever. Since they have re-opened, the price is outrageous and the sandwich is smaller and mediocre. Don't go there.

From a decades-long patron. "Where every sandwich is a work of Art".
Kid went to Art's and LOVE Brent's Northridge (now also Westlake)
But The Hat rocks straight go2 in Ventura 🪄

Jim's burgers on telegraph

The Hat is the best
The Hat is my pick for more then 50 yrs ❤
The Hat, the In-N-Out of Pastrami sandwiches! You got that right
Love The Hat!! I moved to Florida and that’s one of several places I really miss as well as Phillips dip and Chris & Pitts bbq. Always consistent.
One more place to try in Pasadena, Hi Life on Fair Oaks. Guy Fieri Has his pic on the wall.
Johnnie’s in West LA is on another level
Next to Titos , it sucks. Actually the worst pastrami Sandwich I ever had.
Overrated and Cost too much !!! 👎

I eat breakfast at Tops all the time. Never tried their pastrami.
The Hat is very good, but Langer's exceeds it by far. The #19 is the greatest sandwich I've ever tasted.
Lucky Boy in Pasadena on Arroyo Parkway has the best pastrami.
You need to try East Side Deli, next to Dodger's Stadium. All of City, County Workers are there during lunch.
Yup, nothing on their menu will disappoint.
Always ask for an extra roll if you get a hot sandwich 😋
A hidden gem
I used to deliver chips there 20 years ago. The anguilis are awesome
I think you mean city workers. I worked for the city of LA and eat there all of the time, such a good place, try the #7
The Hat chili cheese pastrami fries are killer!
Love Chili cheese fries with Pastrami !
I reco The Hat, Pastrami
not dipped, but with a side of gravy. For the sandwich and to dip the fries. Game changer!!!!
Arrys for the win!

Did you ever try Benjies on Tustin and the 22 fry (approximately). They have the NY style thick pastrami with swiss on rye if you like it that way.
@artguti1551 tried to stuffed cabbage rolls from Benjie's because no ones makes them.

Brent’s Deli #13 is the best, their rye bread is outstanding!
That's deli style. Very different pastrami sandwich from these.
Love Top’s been going since the 80’s❤
Eastside Italian Deli in Downtown L.A. is another great spot for pastrami sandwiches.
I agree with a lot of the posts here, By far the Hat is the best. A distant second is Brent's deli. But traditional pastrami, the Hat is the best!
