Sailing OFF THE CHART - Finding Isolated Islands - Ep.87
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лис 2020
- Sailing in a poorly charted area of Indonesia not mentioned in guide books means finding a new way to navigate. Our ability to seek out and find remote isolated anchorages has been transformed by the use of satellite images for navigation. In this episode we share how using satellite images and eyeball navigation makes it possible to find remote un-spoilt locations to explore on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Destinations which are not in any travel guides and quite possibly have never been visited by sailing yachts before.
How to navigate without charts: Using satellite images to navigate instead of a chart is becoming more common in the cruising world. Navigating via a photo and what you can see with your eyes may sound daunting at first to those used to well charted waters, but once you get used to this new navigation method it opens up whole new areas for exploration.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Now that's exactly what an A Grade sailing channel should show. Exploring, uncomfortable anchorages, weather changes, plan changes, perfect beaches...it was all in this episode. Another great vlog.🌬⛵👍😎🌴
I am Indonesian, thank you for stopping by on one of the remote islands of Indonesia. Regards
You’ve really captured how beautiful our planet is. Such a big fan of all you do.
Thank you for your kind comment :-)
One of the BEST sailing channels on UA-cam! Another great episode!
you guys are becoming legit show hosts. Keep up the great work!
Your choice of music score is great, really enhances your story!
Keep good records and write a book. You are in the seldom visited parts of the world. Have a lovely time!
I was away to say the same comment.
@@keithd6852 Thanks Captain Keith!
Oh your photography is awesome.....the hours of editing and preparing music and narration make your videos "world class!"

Truly amazing footage of that sand spit!
Wow that drone had made your videos even more professional! 📸🌍. I think you guys enjoy making your vlogs as much as we enjoy watching them! 😜👍
Those new Rolly Tasker sails that they gave you seem to be holding up very well and have great shape. Love your vids.
Yes, we are very pleased with them, they have been getting a surprising amount of use, just moving between islands here but we can't wait to give them a good run.
I always smile when your videos come up!
What a magnificent area, thank you so much for sharing.
I like your ethos. You don’t seek to be influencers. You simply sail for the love of exploration and sailing.
Nice that there are parts of the world that aren’t mapped. The pandemic brought you to these places. The path less travelled is always better IMO. Greetings from Australia.
What an adventure.

Thank you for sharing. Beautiful places.
Loved this episode.
Wonderfull vlog, thanks for sharing.
Great video. Just beautiful islands, seas, and beaches. I look forward to your next video.
Some great sailing segments in the editing. And what a beautuful area to be in.
Absolutely Breathtaking thank you :))
Thanks for the great episode. We love the off the beaten track stuff and watching you guys has us itching to get back into Indonesia when Covid safe. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your adventures! They are a delight in this challenging time! Glad to see you have secured a couple of surf board to replace the first one; you never know when you might find a magical break in uncharted water. Fair winds!
FINALLY! I have caught up! I've had your videos playing during lockdown whilst I've been working from home for the past 6 months. It's very soothing to have on in the background. What a joy it has been watching you both. You're English and in your 30's which has been a big draw for me as it's like watching myself do this. You're not 'over-produced' like some of the other sailing vlogs (LaVagabond/ Delos). You're very chilled and it's all about sailing which is great! Keep it up guys. I really feel like I should pay you for allowing me to live vicariously through your videos - I'll visit your patreon page now!
Love your videos. If I am unable to travel there myself at least I can enjoy via your travels. Keep up the good work and positive attitude.
If there's one thing
my life has missing, It's the time that I spend alone, Sailing on the cool and bright clear water :) A Nice song from the little river band.
Quite a lovely drone shot of the sand bar! Wow
Cheers
1st time viewer , I'm so impressed , I hope you keep all of your out takes for a later time thanks for a relaxing time..
By far my favourite UA-cam channel. Keep up the great work guys. Safe travels. Looking forward to your next video. Best wishes, David
Excellent video, with great drone footage.
A beautiful episode with some awesome drone footage. Your content just gets better. By the time you get back to the UK I don't think they'll be much left! Enjoy beautiful Indonesia, I know where I'd rather be right now!
Thanks I enjoy your video with envy even though I know it's not all that easy. Keep up the good spirit of adventure and positive view :)
Another stunning video. Funny how things work out you get stuck have to change your plans and as a result end up in this wounderfull cruising are which you would have missed. Some very nice drone footage, adds a whole different perspective to the place. Stay safe. Bob
I'm getting to know you guys too well, LoL. I wrote stretch your legs, and then Amy said the same thing. Then I said that you will need a larger boat for all of Amy's shells, and then Matt said that too. What does that say about me? Do I need to get out and live my own life a little more?
Take care, Becky and I always enjoy your adventures.
Maybe we just need to be a bit less predicable ;-)
Beautiful photography. 😍
You guys are the best! A proper voyage with proper ethics. With so many other couples bailing out, you show your there with the right intent. I think the Hiscocks would be proud that you fly the red ensign.
Your still as wonderful as ever...thank you so much for sharing your magical life with us all. You both bring much joy to all us land locked souls waiting out the pandemic. Be safe and keep posting ⛵️🍁🎃⛵️ ...you guys look wonderful!
Thank you Lisa, glad you enjoyed it. This storm will pass. Best wishes to you.
Fleeting moments. So nice...
I love that you are willing to go off the charts. I think so many sailors have the idea that’s it’s not okay to explore the unknown anymore. I hope you write books someday, and keep on sailing. It would be good to hear you speak as well.
Great video! So beautiful there and great to be able to navigate with satellite photos :) We used that to find anchorage places in Alaska where we didn't have any guide books.
Thanks guys. Alaska is on our list of places we would love to sail after kitting ourselves and the boat out for colder climates. We hope the winter is being kind to you in Sweden. Our plans change all the time at the moment but we hope we can cross paths with you one day. Thanks for all the sailing and video inspiration!
@@SailingYachtFlorence Nice words, both of you. I am actually watching both of your channels. Such a pleasure to find you both here. Birds of a feather... :)
I have to look for RAN Sailing. I’ve watched all of the Florence videos. I look forward to these. They’ve helped me cope with this pandemic and inspire me to plan my own journeys.
Very good, keep up the good work
Epic. well done
Stunning couple.
According to my understanding of geographical videos big companies realising films of this genre should pay you a lot money for copyrights of your production.
You are a beautiful couple till the death and a couple of film makers. You know how to be a story tellers.
You grow in your professionalism. Others do not make progress in filming industry and personal development. You do both. Thank you for sharing your life on Florence boat.
Thanks Guys great video
What he said, below, so good. Thnks
you enjoy it guys, I'd swap with you in a heartbeat!!, greetings from cold wet and windy Scotland!
We hope to sail the West Coast of Scotland on our return. It's definitely not cold here but it does rain a lot here too (that's what has made it possible for us to survive off rain water for the last 8 months). We try to choose the best weather to get out and explore but be aware there is a lot of time (like right now) where we are sheltering from the wind and rain too.
Sweet ride around!
Good to hear your information and how you are doing.
well made Video , this is what Life is about , enjoy it
One word...MAGIC.!!!! G'day from Nz. Take care.
These videos are currently my most favourite series on UA-cam! They really convince me to take the plunge and get out and do a similar trip! 🤓🌍🙏
Hi Kevin, That is great, we love to inspire others to take the plunge and live their dreams too, best of luck!
Beautiful from freezing nuts Wisconsin 😬
Wow ........ Interesting to see what you may have missed. Beautiful drone photography and great editing. Florence can now leave a mark for others to follow to explore a beautiful paradise - it sure as hell beats the view of these four walls in lockdown. Madagascar is still there and that will be another great place to explore - next year.
Thank you Martin. Madagascar is still firmly closed at the moment but we hope it would be possible next year at the end of cyclone season.
Perfect Timing! Thanks for the Vid.
Needed this with the Covid 2 Electric Boogaloo Outbreak. Something is going on. Lots of people wanting to lock down the state again. Hospitals say they will be maxed out capacity by 8pm tonight.
Lovely islands and was that a golden eagle? Beautuful Natillus shell ...Glad the people were friendly and you didnt get lost in the dense forest .
Wow - you are up late! I'd just finished watching your last vid when this popped up about 3:00am Singapore time!
I often think of you there in isolation bay, wondering if the storms and lightning I watch approaching us here on the 15th floor end up unloading on you a few hours later. They are pretty dramatic here, when we are insde our nice solid apartment, but I remember bein woken up by an overhead storm in a 35 footer in Greece and that was pretty exciting so hats off to you. At least you aren't going to run out of drinking water!
Glad to see you seem to be enjoying things again, with a slightly different focus - make the best of it, the rest of the world is a mad at the moment. We went back home to the UK in March for one week, but got stuck there staying with the mother-in-law (who was very kindl!) for 3 months. Except you couldn't see any friends or travel or go out - at leas the weather was nice. We got back to Singapore in July and had to isolate in a hotel room for 2 weeks, and only left the room once to go for a covid swab.
So - enjoy yourselves there on those lovely beaches, enjoying the best that mother nature has to offer, and hopefully being able to still keep moving around now and keep exploring!
Fair winds and thanks for the hugely enjoyable escapism of your travelogue for those like me that don't get out on the water enough!
You are right, lightening is the stuff of sailors nightmares! We are lucky that we don't get as much of it here as there is in Singapore. We are also lucky that UA-cam lets us schedule videos as we don't have good internet often enough to keep our posting regular so it allows us to post at the same time every two weeks. We hope all is well with you in Singapore and you are able to get out on the water yourself soon.
Another glorious view of amazing, remote places that we'd never get to see ordinarily...
Thank you so much x
If 'Lonely Planet' can only run to half a page for your island group... then someone needs to commission you guys to author the in-depth sailors guide to Indonesia and why not the whole world??? x
Really great video!
Nothing better than adventure 👍👍
cheers to that!
Stunning vid
Epic drone footage. Great stuff..
Thanks, the drone has really come into it's own in this area, even more so in the next videos.
Loving it :-)
Well done, I found your vid informative and interesting.
Thank you Jon, glad you found it helpful, the next two video's we are working on also show more of the area and routes/anchorages via the sat images.
Particularly lovely video. Thought I’d check my global CMAPs for that island as they never fail … but beyond a jagged island and rocks and an 18m contour, nothing 😲 Yep, I think you were exploring uncharted waters, and a _beautiful_ location you found too 🙂
Stunning. Your videos are priceless and heartwarming during difficult times. 😎
Thank you, our best wishes to you Richard.
beautiful video in uncharted waters, its always great to sail in new places and discover new beautiful places. I plan to sail the andaman and nicobar islands next season. As an Indian I have no issue with access to these islands. all the best to you on your sails
Best of luck, we hope you can document the experience, we would love to know more about the Nicobar islands especially.
Another cracking video looks lovely you need to get in a bit of surfing
Currently on the search for a suitable reef break (Sorake Beach was a bit wild for us both even on a small day). The waves in the Mentawai's are supposed to be more mellow now so we plan to head that way.
Just started watching you guys (from the beginning) a few weeks ago… really enjoying the videos so far! You started with a great concept and story… your cinematography and story telling have improved radically, great top notch work!
Question, did you spend much time fishing and if so have much success to supplement the fruit and veggies that you were able to buy on the market in the first 6 months of Covid? Thank you and cheers!
Great videos as I've been following for some time! My journey starts next year as I sell my home here in Mexico and travel to the UK in search of a sailboat to both live and cruise on
I'm very jealous of your Oyster 37 as it would be a perfect fit for me... unfortunately as you know they are very difficult to find so Rustler, HR and Najad are on the short list.
Please stay safe and continued success in a truly incredible lifestyle 😃⛵🍺
Thanks Dennis, best of luck with your boat search. Malo yachts are similar too so may be worth adding to your list. :-)
I have a lifelong friend "stranded" in phuket. I was there in 2019 and really expressed how fun it was. I don't actually feel guilty as he'd have gone there at some time anyway. I do find it hard to imagine phuket totally dead as when I was there, it was full blown hopping. Hope you're well bro lol.
Great episode! My Indonesian ancestry is from Pulau Nias, many generations ago...
I love the guys accent, sounds sophisticated--sounds like the old BBC specials
This unexpected chapter of your journey reminds me of a quote: There is freedom waiting for you, on the breezes of the sky. And you ask “What if I fall?” Oh but my darling, what if you fly? - Erin Hanson
Thank you, that's beautiful, what a great quote!
Rolling seas at anchor...I have eliminated that situation on my vessel. Typically, when the current has me heading north, hanging behind my anchor and the wind and swells might be coming from the east or west, it becomes rolling. But, using a nylon bridle to absorb the shock of the anchor is good. Pulling the bridle towards the lee side of my vessel with an additional line to a midship cleat causes my bow to head more into the swells and dampens most, if not all, of the rolling from side to side. Give it a try!
Now i Know Where You are i Subscribed long Time ago But this is first Video Ive Seen And its Good Your Near Simeleuie Island Which ive Been to
A Delightful island.
That whole area is stunning. The next 2 videos show the small islands and maze of reefs we went back to explore; in our opinion there are even more delightful.
Cracking episode.
wow...the aerial shot of the 3 of you on that sand spit was amazing....looks like you are riding on the back of a huge whale. So lucky to find these places. Covid delays had their plus points.😂😂😂
very nice area one day i may go there
Incredible music choice!
Thanks Wendy, finding music is one of the hardest bits of editing so it's great to hear you liked it.
Great video..so sorry you had to leave because of paperwork. Dont forget to get a beer when you stop! Love J
Thanks 😊
Great video (as always!). Are you able to do some soundings yourself and submit them to the chart people so that the data can be fed back into the charts?
Thank you
Incredible video! So good to see you got some new surfboards! Glad you're safe and exploring again. Beautiful scenes. What are the plans forward now?
The long term plans keep changing but the short term plan is to try and find a gentle surf break (harder than it sounds around here).
Glad that you're living in the short term and hoping that you find that ideal surf break!
Wonder if Cape Town is still high on your agenda? You should consider stopping in False Bay in Simon's Town. That would be a great stop before you land up at Royal Cape or in the Waterfront.
Best wishes from Berlin!
@18:45; Bingo!!! Looks absolutely spectacular! :-)
Cool winch handle!
Haha, thanks its one of the plastic back ups that came with the boat as we unfortunately lost our last good metal one to the deep before heading into Isolation Bay. No where to replace them here!
@@SailingYachtFlorence Now I know why I carry three of them!
Great episode. Very well done.
Could you do/have you done a 'how to' video?
I hope you are producing a guide to the anchorages you are discovering.
I am dreaming about this life
Was born in Brazil but naturalizado americano I drive my semi truck state to state in USA
I own a 26 foot sailing and start my little trips on Caribbean waters but looking forward to go around globe congrats
Plenty of 'Wow!' moments again guys, good work! Of course it's all well and good having satellite imagery to help find where to go but, unless I'm missing something, you're not able to map your GPS position on those images. I'm guessing you still have to do some creative navigation to make sure your position is where you think you are on the satellite pictures? However you do it, you're pretty accomplished sailors :)
Hi Dean, The Ovital app does allow us to show our GPS position over the satellite images, these days we never enter an anchorage without using this technique. So we are perhaps not as accomplished as you think, just cheating by using technology! ;-)
@@SailingYachtFlorence well I’m sure if needed to you’d be able to get by with a sextant and dead-reckoning ;)
Beautiful photography! You guys are blessed. I was watching a friend´s channel called "Sailing Into Freedom", who has unfortunately been struck by lightning and is actually fighting to get his boat to safety. Great channel, check it out! I hope you guys are prepared for such circumstance. All the best!
We had some very close lightening a couple of nights ago. There is very little you can do unfortunately, it's the stuff of sailors nightmares.
@@SailingYachtFlorence Man... I bet! Hope you never get to make the experience.
Hi Guys. Lovely video. Thank you. Do you know the make and model of the catamaran that you sailed in company with? We have a Grainger 40 and I can’t quite tell if that’s one too. Cheers. Simon.
Thank you Simon, Angel Wing is a Seawind 1200.
betapa indah dan kaya nya negriku.....
seindah itu orang
Guys im so thankful for your videos! Y’all should look into TIKTOK to promote your channel.
Thanks but we are still getting our heads around UA-cam and Instagram!
@18:30; Hi guys. I’m very curious as to which programme you’re using for your satellite images, (Google maps, or some other?) And also, you mentioned earlier in this episode, that you can overlay the satellite images over the top of your charts. Is this straightforward to do? Also, which navigation software package are you primarily relying on for your chart plotters? (Navionics, etc...) and do you have a secondary, independent navigation software suite?
I am still enthralled by your channel and absolutely crave all of the sailing footage!!! I’m heading back to sea in a couple of weeks, but unfortunately due to COVID, it will only be on domestic voyages and not through Indonesia.
I look forward to your response, until then, take care and enjoy the cruise in company! ;-) Cheers, Mike
I know cost is an issue but I feel like you could greatly benefit from a small engine for your dinghy. If you were in any kind of hazardous conditions it would be such a struggle for you to make it safely to land. I realize things can happen when there is no land in sight, and engines increase fuel needs but still, maybe something to consider? Also, you guys make an awesome couple. Love your videos and sending hugs from the US!
Thanks, we do actually have a little 2.5Hp dinghy engine which we use when travelling greater distances or carrying fuel/water for Florence. If the distances are short though we just prefer to row.
@@SailingYachtFlorence Good to know! Thanks so much for your response!
I miss the time when you guys used to go for underwater diving and snorkelling .. those are the best times when we enjoy seeing another world , as I am
Hell scared of water
Unfortunately the underwater life here is not so vibrant, oh and in places there are crocodiles so we haven't done as much snorkeling recently.
@@SailingYachtFlorence so true .. san blas, the Great Barrier Reef, diving in Philippines is much safer n better than risking life with crocodiles.. stay safe ... keep uploading ..I am your die hard fan and especially of the music in the beginning ...ooooooohhhhhh ohhhh ohh oh..... tin tin tin tin tin tin tin tin tin tin ..oooh ohhh ohhh😊😊❤️❤️😍😍
