Sailing Red Tape | Our HARDEST Ocean Departure | Crossing the Indian Ocean Ep.104

- Battling bureaucracy to check out on our boat, this is the most difficult process we have ever faced to leave. Leaving a country by yacht is not as simple as walking through the airport and getting your passport stamped on the way. Our challenge is to manage it without being forced to pay a bribe. This is just yet another challenge as part of sailing Florence across the Indian Ocean.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfil our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Please don't cry... we will meet again somewhere on the way....
It has been a pleasure to enjoy your company at cubadak.
I never cease to appreciate your guys's attitude and your realness and humbleness... to me, you're beyond Cruisers... you are World adventurers! thanks for taking us along with you 😊👍
My favourite sailing channel and couple. Safe sailing!
You guys are a tremendous couple, thank you for taking us on your journey.
Very unpretentious couple. I enjoy your honest videos.
So excited for your Indian Ocean crossing! Stay safe!!
Thank you for this video.
When i see corruption with government officials I tend NOT to go there. But thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Until next time.
Aloha and Mahalo from the Big Island 🏝of Hawaii 🏝
You guys are just the best at really showing the emotions in undertaking a journey like this. Best channel on UA-cam, really look forward to every video. Hope you get great weather to blow you onto the next adventure.
Best channel on UA-cam is a silly comment. It's not a competition unless you see life that way. Many talented people have outstanding UA-cam channels.
Love this channel. I should have said it a long time ago.
There's always times when the sailing dream becomes a nightmare, but with time it becomes a dream again. The Yin and Yang of life.
You have more patients than I would have with the bureaucracy’s in control. 😁🛫
So good to see you taking a nice steady approach in dealing with the machinations of leaving.
That click when starting the engine sounds like a broken solenoid (just doesn't have a good contact patch), either hit it a few times and try again or you'll need to take it apart and clean it. I once fixed it by glueing a small piece of aluminium so that the solenoid contact would go further.
Hi Toms, Thanks that is an interesting point, we'll do a bit more research into that. The solenoid on our starter motor looks like a sealed unit though.
@@SailingYachtFlorence
Does it look like the starter motor on page 33 within the below catalogue?
It definitely isn't one I've seen before, but I think that item 8 "Holder, Magnetic switch" serves the same purpose as a solenoid on a typical starter.
Not sure how much this helps but I hope you find the issue and all will be well.

Yes it does. We are an N4.38. At the risk of spoiling the next episode we are now up and running with a new battery. However we are not convinced that was the only problem so we are always happy to learn more about how things work, ready to diagnose why they have stopped working next time. Thanks for your messages :-)
Such a very proper sailed channel. Makes me miss my Mum. Now I'm crying.
Fair winds, guys! I cannot wait for the videos of crossing Indian Ocean!
I'd have nicked all of his stamps and forms and checked myself out.
Είστε θεοί σας παρακωλουθώ απο το πέρασμα του ατλαντικού κάνετε ωραία δουλειά έχω γυρίσει τον πλανήτη μαζί σας καλή συνέχεια στο ταξίδι σας!
OK, thats it. You are both officially our newest best friends, if not family already. Filming yourselves react to leaving and then later while editing, not second guessing your reaction and sharing with us, that is life at its best, my best. Thank You!!! OK now I really must get back to fixing MY leaky window. ;-) 😉😂
In your shoes (or boat!) I think I would just have sailed off and pled ignorance if stopped.
Good luck on your latest stage and remember your British, so cup of tea, stiff upper lip and don't let the bastards grind you down! 😉
I partially agree with you. However, exit stamps in the passport are absolutely must have. The next country will most likely not accept entrance, as it would be seen as you fled the previous country illegally.
Next I would like to clear is customs. Just to not to be chased down by their military.
The rest I would not care about if there’s no plan of return
Maybe civil disobedience is needed now..... Burocracy is out of control the world over.
communism is winning....
Best of luck with the passage.
Very respectful you are of not directly filming other people.
I read Hal Roth's book "After 50,000 miles" years ago. He complained about the bureaucracy involved in entering and departing several countries on his circumnavigations. It was so bad he seriously considered just forging his own documents and he was sailing around the world in the 60's. Doesn't sound like it's got any better, seems like it's even worse. Good luck on the next leg of your journey, I'll be watching your progress. Thanks for the video! Sail on! : )
I’m hooked, hook, line and sinker! Excellent voyage planning videos and a great confidence booster for a nervous old sea salt like me. God speed, fair sailing, happy days and stay safe. ~Ramey~
you seem to be a nice couple with a very nice idea all the best
john
Can't stay.. Can't leave? Blessings to you both on your "Embarkment"
I was thinking of border bureaucracy lately and how that is going to be a big challenge for me where it is much more complicated on a boat (currently travelling by land). I am particularly challenged by stupid, nor have I done particularly well with corruption. It is helpful to see a young couple who accept it as another cost or challenge. Well done.
The very best for a memorable voyage. Since my last chat to you my wife’s health took a nasty turn and she is now in care. So your journey reaches the innermost parts of my being and digs deep at my own sailing experiences. Your comments on this latest video reminds me of the saying “parting is like dying a little”. It’s true of both our journeys at this time. Whenever you return to the UK and you are up North then you are welcome to free accommodation at our place. Thanks for the inspiration you bring.
Recently started watching your videos. What I like the most is you guys are a likable couple 😀
Your channel is such a gem, awesome video every time. Safe passage!
Another brilliant episode with tears & bureaucracy. Looks like an adventure is on the horizon.
Journey onwards!
Great to see you 2 again.
Thanks for the video.
I think Florence is excited to be underway again.
There is a saying “ jam Karet “ which means rubber time. And you have experienced that saying.
Well done guys, even a small bit of their language goes a long way..👍🙏🥂
I wish you safe passage guys. One thing you might want to look at getting is cargo cart that folds up with the big rubber wheels on it. Makes it so much easier on your back and for storage and for carrying food. Cant believe England lost the match. Greetings and well wishes from the Brit in California. cheers. xxxxx
No clickbait thumbnails, no bikini clad babes... just good quality educational, fun, exploratory global sailing. Absolutely fantastic channel. Congratulations guys. You're killing it!! (And after 2 years I've finally caught up with the videos!!! Oh damn I can't binge watch anymore!?!)
I don’t have the patience necessary to visit certain countries. I can’t handle bureaucracy. Great job! 👍👍👍
Maybe I can give you a tip mate.
Be mentally prepared to not have enough photocopies required of your documents. If you have 30 copies, they want 31. That’s just basic rules🙄.
When you go to find a place that provides (hugely overpriced) copies, I pretended that I’m on a hunt for a huge machine gun😁
Remember, do all those steps with a fake smile, as smile solves problems better than anger
Howdy Guys, you can put a spanner or screw driver (any conductor) between the terminals of the solenoid and it will provide power to the starter motor unless, for some reason your batteries are flat. If batteries are flat you may have a decompression lever to help you turn over the engine. You can also remove an injector and start the engine on one cylinder (if a 2 cylinder engine) Do you have a hand crank capability? Hope things work out for you. Cheers ,Rob
Back in the saddle!
Wow, what a complicated procedure to get checked out. Glad you got it sorted out.
Congratulations ,no wind it happens Good luck ,be safe .Greetings from the tropical paradise island 🏝of Kauai
Awesome pictures!
Loved the video
Safe travels!!!!
I've been dreaming of sailing for years, you two are really showing us what it is really like. Living the dream.
One Life, One Search,
Peace Out,
Shane.
What a beautiful video again. Thank you for taking us along!
Oh wow what a process to go through!!
Fair winds and following seas!
Wow! What a wonderful and insightful adventure to share. Cheers
A well-handed team with the most!
Good winds. Wonderful video. Congratulation.
You do great work even through your trials! Thank you for showing your reality!
Great movie, so happy ya'll are out and moving again.
Great dear...... God bless you❤
What a lovely pair you two are. People like you make the world a better place.
Only the best for the two of you. Safe travels, cheers 🥂
Just sailing away isnt enough for the authourities ? But saying goodbye to friends is allways difficult. And its nice to show a little motor drama at the end :) Just to keep everyone focust on your journey! :)
Another amazing video guys! So down to earth and you always just get stuff done that needs doing without all the drama!
Safe travels. Waiting to hear about your passage journey. 😀❤
Glad to see everything went well checking out of Indonesia. Looking forward to seeing the next video!!!
Congratulations on arriving in Port Victoria Seychelles. Look forward to seeing your crossing videos
Welcome to asia sv florence WATCHING FROM PHILIPPINES
I'm going on an adventurous ride with u guys. Have safe sail..
Wow! What a cliffhanger you have left us with. De de duuuum! Stay well you two and May you be blessed along your adventure. Don't forget, you can't design a true adventure. You are more than we'll prepared.
Thank you guys for sharing these videos love them best wishes from mike usa
I’ve only recently discovered you guys (sorry!) but am really enjoying your channel. Only hoping that you made a successful crossing as otherwise we wouldn’t be hearing from you (unless of course, you’re still in Indonesia?!)
I have been waiting for your leaving for the Seychelles. I really like your efforts.
Any chance of showing us what the night sky looks like in the middle of an ocean?
Probably impossible. The light is so weak that you'd need a very long exposure. And long exposures don't work on a moving yacht bobbing about on an ocean.
@@scottysscandinavia5793 Hadn't thought about that. Makes sense. Thanks. It must look awesome without any light pollution.
Another great video you to will be ok both got your heads screwed on right have a safe trip
Your videos just get better and better; and they were already brilliant! Far better than Netflix! Thanks for sharing this amazing adventure guys.
It is very beautiful there. The cities are crazy busy though, which is to be expected. I can't believe it takes so long to get out of there.
You two are so watchable! It is so great to see the beginnings of your Indian Ocean trip. Ah yes the bittersweet feelings of moving on, leaving behind old friends but looking forward to meeting new ones. We will look forward to hearing more about your big trip and eventual arrival in the Seychelles. Best J&J
Have a safe crossing. Only recently discovered your channel & am enjoying watching your previous vids, I spent my early childhood in the South Pacific. You inspire me to use my 40ft wooden sailboat more often, thankyou
thank you sharing this adventure. Goodbye Indonesia
when I first worked in Indonesia in 1988, it was rp890 for U$1. today is rp14,300!
Spirit Flower said it well (below) So glad I have a power boat! You guys are the best! Carry on.
The more I watch sailing channels in Indonesia, the less I want to visit it.
Wow! Big goals, small boat. Hope you have enough provisions, safety equipment, skill, stomach, and patience too make the journey. Smooth sailing!
This is what real blue water sailing is all about..You both are the real stuff..Godspeed…(I know you made it safely to the Seychelles as I was tracking your AIS…
Great video, very informative and maybe shows the future of sailing/travelling bureaucracy wise and also confirms that having an electric motor with a large battery bank and solar array is DEFINITELY worth the money, especially near the equator.
Good luck 🍀
You've got a visitor under the dinghy at 17:52 - small shark maybe ?
Thrilling, absolutely engaging beyond any other sailing channel. We so appreciate you sharing with us ❤️❗️ We have been patrons but we are no longer financially able to help. That said we pray for your well being and are so greatful that you have reached the Seychelles and are able to share your adverntures with us again. Love you both, stay in good spirits, we have for well over 50 years of marriage 💖❗️
Wishing you two,the best of luck with your next great crossing.
Be safe and good sailing 🌞⛵
Check on Instagram for channels you follow, much more current updates.
I thought it was quite funny that you had to ferry the customs men in your own dinghy.!
Haven't they got one of their own?
saild thru indunesia, check out was sort of easy in a marina oposite singapore, even my entry stamp was wrong,
but , i like u guys, not a personelliety show, just live as it goes, good luck, ceap on!!!
C'mon Amy and Matt, you'll always be able to come back . And life has always been changing for you. You'll be alright, and you'll see your friends and isles again. Cheer up friends. Love you all ❤️
So this was some 2 months back. Good luck guys. Stay safe
Great stuff!!! Super jazzed for y'all! Been a minute, init? 😂 ...nah really - though sorry to learn of last moment hiccups - still on ballance happy for you earch both ❤️⚓️䷊
That check out process seems absurdly complicated
Seychelles are wonderful. Our suggestions for places you would want to checkout:
Praslin:
- Anse Lazio, especially for sunset
-Vallée de Mai with the largest coconouts in the world, that are also the national symbol (the park is like a Glasshouse in a botanic garden)
- You can make a day trip to Curieuse from northern Praslin, there they have a wonderful turtoise sanctuary. (They love visitors that give them neck scratches)
- Diving (at least for us) was better in Praslin than Mahe, however a lot of corals are dead and there are few sharks (the government killed many after some attacks on swimmers 10 years ago). You still have swarms of colerful fish but it might not be able to compete with Indonesia.
Mahe:
- Morne Seychelles National Park (trekking up the mountains on foot and visit an old tea factory by car)
- Anse Soleil beach a nice uncrowded beach on the west side (if you see a dog couple black and browne, give them a cuddle from us)
La Digue (our most favourite island)
- Rent a bike, almost no cars on the island
- Get a guide for an island trekking tour, it is worth it!!
- Anse Source d'Argent (if you head south from the beach during low tide, through hip heigh water for a couple of minutes, you will reach a beautiful hidden beach where you have good chance of being the only ones around)
- Anse patates a small but beautiful beach in the north
You will need a car on Mahe to get around. Driving is a bit scary, because often locals tend to stay in the middle of the narrow roads. So don't move to the side to early or they will just stay in the middle. It is better adviced to play a small game of chicken and stay quite in the center yourself until both agree to move to their sides.
This adivce might sound strage right now, but trust us, it will become handy once you drive around on the island. ;-)
What a complicated business. Bon voyage
Well done to you. Lose the mask and you are really free. Loads of love.
No masks needed at sea! :-)
@@SailingYachtFlorence Agreed. Not required on land either.
I thought Spain was bad for paperwork! I now know Spain is the model of simplicity.
Hi Guys, you two are amazing, if someone ever needed to witness patience, for what ever reason, then just show them this video.
In the cruising world, you do meet some beautiful, amazing people. AND THEY LEAVE THEIR MARK. Matt, only a fool ignores emotion, to publicly shed a tear, takes a man. Matt, you are a man !!!!
Your decision to delay departure until there was adequate wind to see you start your crossing, was in my book, the right one. I learned long ago not to set an agenda, the elements NEVER read it anyway. However, your agenda has already been set by, The Seasons. I'm confident that, when you do decide to "go for it" it will be a considered, correct decision. Here's wishing you as enjoyable a journey as is possible.
Kind Regards, Barnacle Bern SY Cadbri.
Stay safe. Really hoping the dodgy fuel doesn't mess with the engine.
You should consider calling in to Chagos..its British...Salamon Group, beautiful!
Good luck :D
Maybe. IF the dinghi outboard were 9 to 15 HP , a frame in the Florence transome (sorry) where to instal it , the outboard could work as an emergency engine. Maybe
Seems that 7 Quarantine employees have watched this.
Safe travels.
We had to pay a Bribe in Ko Samui Thailand , and American Samoa , Both Fee's that didn't exists .
you ought to do another channel about sailing
Hope you are heading to South Africa? Safe sailing! Love your channel.
Current plan is to arrive in SA late oct/nov, if they will let us in then.
@@SailingYachtFlorenceHope that you will be allowed in. We will be looking out to see whether you come to Port Elizabeth. 😊
