EXTREME HEAT boat life | STUCK on the Equator | Sailing Florence - Ep.99

  • Stuck for a year in a sailing boat on the equator has had its challenges, from the extreme heat, to living with the isolation on board. This part of Indian Ocean is beautiful but life behind the lens is not always as easy as it looks on camera. We share the reality of life on board as we explore this tropical paradise. Since borders closed around the world in March 2020 we have been unable to move far with Florence. As we are unable to sail home to England without stopping somewhere for provisions along the way, and those places have closed boarders, the safest thing for us to do was to stop here where we are on the equator, and we have been here ever since.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

I can’t say that I know how you feel; however, I have been deployed with the military and my only way of communicating was through letters. Back then there were no phones, no computers and no WiFi to worry with. My heart is with yours when you mention missing family though. It can be a real morale thing. Stay busy, write letters, adopt a mantra, “It could be worse”; we could be in the desert; people could be shooting at us... We love you guys. You have a huge family here, sending you hugs and affection. Texas

It's easy to think of being where you are as paradise, but in reality I'm pretty sure that the isolation and heat would do me in. We've sheltered at home for over a year, but we have food delivered and drive-up collection for almost anything we need. Truth is we've got it easy.

Amy and Matt, your patience, perseverance and upbeat attitude have been brilliant in the face of the difficulties you have experienced waiting out a global pandemic in the equatorial tropics for 12 plus months. I really admire what you have done and am amazed at your resilience! The incessant heat and humidity alone would have driven me mad ! I hope you'll be able to start your crossing of the Indian Ocean soon!

Amy and Matt... well, after a marathon binge watch, I am now all caught up with your channel. Speechless really. From being kicked out of port, to new sail sponsorship, to your change of plan and strategy - no wonder you are in love with Indonesia. I watch two other sailing channels - Freerange Sailing and Sailing Follow the Boat - and I absolutely love your channel. Though single, I am now too old to embark on such a learning adventure, but your channel allows me to dream the dream. Just as Troy & Pascal, Jamie & Liz do on their channels - you two work so wonderfully well together. Your video editing skills are excellent, your content is fascinating, interesting and varied, and you are both extremely affable and personable to camera. Keep up the great work, I now look forward to 3 sailing channel UA-cam notifications. John.

My brother and his family lived at sea level on the Island New Britain (PNG) for 14 years. So I should have correlated their experience to yours but I could not feel the heat or see mosquitoes until now. And I’ve followed you for more than two years maybe three.
The beautiful scenes don’t convey everything.
I wanted to write and let you know I now understand so much more now. My step-father was a bomber pilot in PNG WW2 and suffered from dengue fever. My sister-in-law was nearly taken out by malaria. I once asked why indigenous people sought western clothing especially shirts so much. “The tropical sun just rots your skin off!,” she replied. UV you mentioned but also tropical microbes look for skin opportunities.
I say all this to tell you thanks for your beautiful work. This was one of your very best and the music, editing and images balanced the discomfort of the tropics.
Btw the skin comment included some life at 6000 ft on PNG where mosquitoes were not bad but the sun truly did damage skin terribly. They wore long sleeves even in high temps. So I finally get where you are. How stupid of me not to realize it earlier. Looking forward from Texas USA for your next ocean crossing!

After a few months In the tropics, we added a full-length awning we could set up at anchor. The awning combined with a self-standing wind scoop in the forward deck hatch made a huge difference . The shade and the steady air flow through the boat made it comfortable below most of the day.

Leaking Keel stepped masts: A big sponge and a layer of Polyurethane foam at the level just below the lowest halyard exit stops the leaks (the VHF etc cables can go through the foam). You can buy the PU foam in 2 component liquid form or a spray can (less good). The sponge can be just shoved hard through the halyard exit and acts as a base for the PU foam. In your heat the PU foam would go off like a dream! Water coming down will flow out the lowest halyard exit.

Wow, what a great review. Good on you for reviewing the dangers of being so far away from emergency services. Many people dream about deserted white sand beaches but you really must be very, very careful in such places. I've been to many such places in South East Asia too. I'm reminded about it every time you go diving or snorkeling. One big unexpected swell could push you up against the coral, which could mean a deep cut which could become infected very quickly. Also, in such places, a thing as simple as walking on a beach in bare feet can have consequences. Take care. After twelve months off west Sumatra, even I am looking forward to you being able to head west across the Indian Ocean.

I had just a couple of ideas to toss out. Would placing a tarp over your stack pack to make a tent over your cabin area help cut down the heat? The added shade with an air gap might give you a couple of hours in the morning and one in the evening that is more comfortable. Second, I watch a ton of sailing channels on YT. I've often wondered if having a small water pump and a small radiator with a fan behind it would help cool things down some. Pump the 86 degree water from the ocean through and back out of the radiator with a small 12v fan running it. An aquarium pump would probably be enough water supply.
I'm disabled and my wife isn't keen on living the boat life, so I'm stuck on land living through videos like yours. So please excuse my ignorance if this is just dumb ideas.

Another thing I want to mention, I have a camping shower, its a califont, gas with a lithium battery. It's called a Aquaheat by Companion out of Australia. It's very good, shower anywhere type of thing, it's not big and would be a great warm transom shower for Florence. Thanks for the video! I guess even paradise has it's down side. I've sailed the coast of Alaska for 30 years from Seattle to Kodiak. It's mostly coastal cruising unless you cross the gulf of Alaska. There are hundreds of coves, bays, fjords, inlets and passages. I've always wondered what it would be like to sail in the Tropics or Caribbean. I am not entirely sure I would like it. Good luck! Liked and subscribed. I'll be keeping tabs on your progress. : )

Living in paradise has its challenges, living with the perfect person has challenges.... Being happy has its challenges.
Being content may be the hardest thing in life...... Says the Buddha.

hi guys new here. use oregano, lemon essential oil. food grade hydrogen peroxide it kills mold. in the water and vinegar these are good mold combos. i live a few feet from ocean and battle mold. the litle throwaway dehumidifers work good too. you hould have proper mask on when wiping down mold spores can cause cancer.

Yup, Malaysia is the same as Indonesia but you kind of climatize after living here for a while. If only the weather could be cooler.

I ive in Miami, where it's hot and humid, tho not as much as the equator region. But even here, I keep nuts and seeds in the refrigerator, or anything else, if needed. I also have a small refrigerator, but only for one person. And the fan in the cabin, I would mount just underneath the mosquito net, as to get the most cool air.

I live in the Midwest of United States and last summer my air conditioning went out, to give you an idea, the temperatures are in the mid to upper 90s in the summer and humidity upwards of 100%. I cannot imagine how you survive without air-conditioning.

First let me say that you guys are awesome. Now, about the heat, mold etc. I've spend some time in areas on or very near the equator so I feel for you. But something I learned that I want to pass on to you is this, if you don't have a dehumidifier then burn candles. Sounds counter intuitive I know, but burning candles will consume the moisture in the air and cool your cabin down by as much as 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit and of course reduce the humidity/mold levels. Fair warning: burn candles only under supervision:)
Now please keep sharing this great content.
