- Time has come for us to re-rig Fair Isle, luckily we happen to know a top class rigger. Jade is a rigger for the Golden Globe Race, he knows how to make sure a rig can stand up to the rigors of the Southern ocean and he came out to see us in Montenegro.
So as well as anchoring in what has to be the best backdrop for Xmas lights in the world and seeing more of marvellous Montenegro, we have a great technical section for you in this episode. Much more to come!
Jade is based in North Wales and has a big sail loft as well as the rigging business. He comes highly recommended! www.theboatshe...

Agree, both our masts are off the boat and next to the boat in the yard. Stripped masts and much to do.
Have a great Christmas
Thank you vary much for the holiday wishes.
The very best of belated holiday wishes to you and yours!
As I used to say, when I drank more, and publicly, "Happy Holly Daze!"
Whenever you have doubts about stainless steel or any material, clean and polish the piece and check with a good magnifying glass all the welds and according to the direction in which the piece exerts force (were fatigue start), so you will see if there is an imperfection and as the expert said touch it. Happy Holidays and sorry for my English.
Loved the scenic music score ❤
merry Christmas and many thanks for a year Sailing Fair Isle.
The tv show about the broom was great. I love British humor the way it can make you look at things completely differently by making simple observations and you get to laugh at the same time
Hi,Good news that your rig is ok,no stress in that respect before Christmas, and on that note I will wish you and you family a very happy Christmas.Roly 🇬🇧
Stunning scenery, amazing location. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for such an informative vlog. You never seem to fail on informing and entertaining us, especially as our temperature is in the minus degrees C atm! Montenegro is now on our bucket list. Our best wishes for Xmas & the New Year and we look forward to more fantastic episodes in 2023. Sailing Fair Isle is something I look forward to every week but I'm sure you need a break 'sometimes'. 😎
Great learning from the rigger.... I have been studying one rig from an old boat, but in the end, I believe that without maintenance records on the rigging it is utterly impossible to determine the remaining life. Alas, just like the football World Cup, at any given time rigging issues seem to keep 99% of sailors rummaging at night, while only 1% of sailors are actually "enjoying" it (and these 1% are the ones that just installed a new one). Ah, you should receive a prize for the cleanest/tidiest anchor locker ever, smell is indeed the best selling point for replacing an old chain for a new stainless one!!
Do have a wonderful holiday … 😁🤗🎄💪🙏🏻⛵️
Have a great Christmas there. It's freezing here and in the UK so you're in the perfect place. Great video as always.
Jade and Steve (The Boatshed Sailmakers) rigged our boat in summer 2021 and the rig hasn't moved since they did it, still bar tight after 6000 miles from Ireland to Carribean via the med. Steves sails are also the best in the business, and he just did the transatlantic with me. Legends all of them in that loft (Julie, Alaw, Owen, Paula)
Good to know
The hike was fabulous…heart shape at night beautiful. We r exp a snowstorm here in mid Canada 🇨🇦❤️
Happy Christmas and a Safe Cruising New Year! Thank you for all your videos during 2022.
A very merry Christmas to you both. Top sailing channel 👏👏👏
I completely overlook my bob stay every time I check the rigging. I won't in future. Thanks for your channel.
Great content as usual, perfect start to my Saturday. Merry Christmas to you both.
Absolutely beautiful location! Great video! What a super combination or subject matters, including a little football! Nice! Merry Christmas and I hope you both have a marvelous New Year!
merry xmas 2 u as well
Have a very Merry Christmas 😊
Merry Christmas! best wishes.
Don't you just love your Insta360 camera? I love mine. Thank you for a magnificent video....always informative, interesting, and entertaining.
Judy walking away from that penalty!! LOL 😂😂😂😂😂 Excellent episode, looking forward to the rigging technical. Happy Christmas to you both!!
Great episode looks a really beautiful place. Merry Xmas to you both
Great episode. If I remove a chainplate bolt I replace it and its nut with a new one. For relatively (?) little expense it gives me piece of mind against missing microcracks that could prove disastrous at a most inconvenient time. Best wishes for the festive season and I look forward to following you adventures in 2023.
Yes, the main reason for taking them out though is to see if there has been water sitting around them and corrosion has started. If that’s the case I would pull them all and replace them.
Merry Christmas x
Thanks for a terrific initial lesson in rigging! Fun to watch u watching “football,” which seems an interminably long stretch of back & forth for the hope of a score. Give me good ‘ol blood & guts USA 🏈 for excitement. Thanks so much for your wonderful videos, & Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!! -Dr. Mac
The Americans played well we thought. Surprising as in your version of 'football' the players seem to just get together for a chat in the corner every 5 minutes and let the cheerleaders have a go!
@@svfairisle Ouch!
Hi Steve
You guys have done well.
I just had my 48T re-rigged, and all chain plates renewed.
We found lots of problems with the steel itself.
The chainplate for the inner forestay was in really bad shape. And a nightmare to change; the whole bowsprit had to be removed completely.
Found some rot behind the two aft chain plates; again, a huge job! Anyways, I'll pick the boat up next week.
I look forward to seeing the next video about your rigging process.
Best and merry Xmas to you both.
Andreas
Yes you mentioned before that you had problems, so I was worried. If you have any pictures I'd be really grateful if you could send some so I have an idea of what to look out for. I haven't pulled any bolts from the aft chain plates yet. All seems good from the outside, but I'd like to see exactly where the problems on yours were so I can see if anything is developing on ours. Hope you get back sailing soon. Where do you have the boat now? Our email is sailingfairisle@gmail.com thanks, Steve
I'll sent you an email and pictures. You got it?
Lovely video as always. We enjoy your broadcasts immensely. Thank you! Btw how do you obtain those selfie stickless shots? Thanks..
Thanks very much and happy Xmas. I will be making a video next week on selfie stick shots, but basically you need a 360 camera
Harry Kane will now always be remembered for that air mailed penalty kick and not his illustrious career. Such a crying shame.
Jade re rigged my Westerly Oceanlord last year. 1st class rigger he spotted additional problems with my spars and fitments I hadn't noticed. Will he be doing your rigging replacements? How did you manage to get him out there from North Wales?
Yes Jade will be coming back when we have all the fittings here I want to film the whole thing with him. I think with Jade it pays to have your boat somewhere nice to persuade him to come out!
Judy, Steve, I want to wish you both a very nice Christmas and a fantastic 2023. I hope your journey will bring you and us to beautiful places in de Med!
Thank Hans, merry Christmas 🎄🎅🎄
👍
Hi guys. How're you? I was wondering if you could do a career vlog. You guys had a very successful career at journalism, did you not? I'm really
curious about that.
It’s a tricky one that. Our viewers tend to want content completely focused on sailing. We do show some of the work we do now to the Patrons, but they are documentaries we make for charity in Africa about Female Genital Mutilation. That would really scare the viewers off! We talk about some of our previous work in the Zoom chats we do as well but that’s just a few patrons that are interested. This is a little piece we put out for the patrons after we came back from one of the trips… ua-cam.com/video/Ffe-u0d2YHU/v-deo.html
@@svfairisle thanks guys.
When you sail over open water for 2 -3 days straight, is there always one person who stays up at night watching the boat, wind and sails? How to other sailors handle this? or Solo Sailors? I know you can put the boat on auto pilot, but you wouldn't want to "auto pilot" right into another ship !!
Yes there’s always someone on watch. Spotting issues with the rig is not easy though. It’s good practice to go on deck often and look around though. Jade actually recommends a system on long passages where you don’t just do a regular walking deck check looking for any faults, but you go around several times looking for specific things each time. Ie chaff in the running rigging, connections / tensions in the standing rigging etc. things are more difficult to spot at night though and we try not to go on deck if the other person is sleeping at night so checks happen less often
@@svfairisle Okay but what I meant was running into other boats or ships and making sure you are staying on course etc. Problems with the ropes, rigging, sails etc I would think can be made in the daytime when you obviously have more light.
@@bigguy467 yes in coastal sailing it’s important to have someone on watch at all times. AIS really helps but often fishing boats don’t have it and radar isn’t perfect at showing up some things. Off shore out of the shipping lanes you could give yourself 20 minute breaks if things are clear to the horizon, that’s what single handers do.
Die Hard? is that a tradition to watch it on xmas day?
Oh yes, The Die Hard series is always on over Xmas in the UK.
so show the mountain top restaurant. give the guy some exposure. did you have lunch...how was the wine... we don't give a hoot about Judy's backside. wake up Steve.
We showed everything there was of the mountain hut. They didn't actually deserve any publicity though, the sort of overcharging only usually found in Croatia
I do hope that you folk are safe and well with all that is on the news now.
I think we're much better off being in Montenegro than the UK at the moment, looks like the whole countries on strike over there at the right now
@@svfairisle Good to hear, keep safe.
