My friend Frank. I am proud to say that. He saved my life once. I was homeless for 3 years. This is a genuine person. And yes, substance abuse factors in but this man is kind. Bobby and Amy say hi! It hurts to see him still living like that.
@Blue Savage I told a Sucidal Tendancy gangbanger off. We were all sleeping in an alley that boarded Ocean Front walk. It was around 3a.m. and I had to pee. I had been warned not to go to the bathrooms at night, but I didn't listen. This guy came up and was trying to give me dope. Meth. I said no . He wouldn't stop. Came to where we were sleeping and tried to push it on my man. He said no too. Guy just kept on and on. My boyfriend got up and thumped on him. Dude took off but came back so my Bobby got up and chased him. I was sitting there alone and the gangbangers came rolling up. Started verbally harassing me. Took my big umbrella. (I have a brain tumor, inoperable, and that California sunshine was killing me. So I traded a full length leopard spotted coat with a hood for that big umbrella), well. I sat there a minute and jumped up and started yelling as I walked up to them. I told them "Oh hell to the FUCK NO! I been married to a very mean man for 23 years and you ain't got nothing on him. AND my boyfriend is satan. You might have a gun but you got to be mean enough to pull the trigger. I'm not afraid of you and you can suck my left tit.) And I took my umbrella back and went to my spot. So Bobby comes back a bit later and told me it was a gang. They take their gangbanging seriously. I didn't realize. The next night we were all settling down and Frank came over and "Bobby and Amy, one over to my spot and smoke a bowl with me." So we were sitting with Frank and the gang came rolling. Now Frank knows all the politics on the boardwalk. He knew they were going to roll up. Frank liked us, we had street cred because Bubbles was choking and we helped her. So Frank intervened and when they came up we were all talking they said wheres that couple that stays in that spot? Nobody said nothing and I just kept talking and ignored them. Frank knew they were coming. It was really dark so they really didn't know for sure. We never slept in Venice again. We went to the Palisades. Got our life back now. It humbled me greatly. I never in my life thought I would ever be in that position. I was a Sunday School teacher. Brain tumor, 4 strokes and brain surgery, a crazy alcohol drug addict husband later and i went crazy. I ran away cause he always said if I left he would kill me. So I went as far away as I could on this North American continent. I ran away to the edge of the world and I lived on the beach there. The group I got in with was AWESOME. 3 years out there watching the wheels go by. I ended up brea,ing both my feet at the same time. Bobby kept being harassed for 2 years by this guy and he ended up beating him up and had to to prison for a year. So I was out there alone for 5 months. My mom had died and I told my Daddy I was giving him my portion of the inheritance. She was his wife before she was my mom and hestill, had to live. My sister got her husband's nephew to come get me and take me to a notary and I signed away my money. I had a spot on the bluffs looking at the Pacific. So then I was alone in a tent. The key is to be invisible. I never put a tent groundless. Always hidden. They don't want to see you cause they don't want to be you. When I broke my feet my sister that had my daddy with her, she asked me how much money did I need to buy me a place. I live in North Carolina and years ago you could buy a used trailer, mobile home, for $5000. So thats what I said. I used to clean houses in Cary, really high end, McMansions. But this brain tumor, i kept falling out in customers homes. Then I had a wreck and had to buy another car. So I had a car payment and rent fell behind and i got evicted. But I was still working cause I had my car. I was sleeping in a barn on the farm where my husband and I raised our 4 children. I helped build that barn. For 2 weeks I did that. My oldest grandbaby found me in there. He asked me why I was sleeping in the barn. Because all my grown children were scornful of me for leaving their Daddy. They were mad at me for leaving but at least I left their daddy breathing. I was gonna pick a fight and cut his boat in half with a saw and make him kill me, but I left instead.I came back to the area after a year away. I had 8grand babies. Now I have 19. But his daddy died and I went to the funeral and my husband's girlfriend hates my Guts and gave him hell and he took a gun after the funeral when a 100 people were at the house and shot holes in the ceiling. Later that weekend he killed my dog. So I left again and went all the way to California. So I knew if I could just buy a trailer to live in and just pay lot rent then I could have somewhere to live cause when I was cleaning houses and paying rent I was starving. Bills took it all. So my sis sent me $7000 and I came back to NC and spent 6 weeks at my daughters and found a beautiful park and thought no way could afford one of those because prices have gone up now. Need like 12,000. But my daughter called the number and by some miracle this guy was selling his and said 5,000. So we went to a notary and i gave him 5 000 cash and got the receipt. So now can afford to live. I used to sing a song when I was homeless. By Everclear, but I changed the words. Its about buying a new life: I will buy me a garden Where my flowers can bloom I will buy me a used car With transmission problems I will buy me a trailer Way back in Caroline I will buy me a new life Yes I will And I did. Speak it and bring it to you. The universe is listening. If I had known that breaking g my feet would get me my life back, I would have took a baseball bat to them. I never knew to this day how much money my inheritance was. I didn't read anything, I just signed cause I didn't give 2 f's about it, I loved my Daddy and that was my part of helping care for him. But my sister gave me enough for a miracle to take place for me. I missed my kids and grandbabies. I got my life back. Yes I was homeless but I turned that over and fucked it in the ass. I fell in with the PCH WRECKING CREW baby and we had a blast. We weren't like the rest of the homeless cause we weren't desperate anymore. Mentality. It was hell in paradise for me. Beautiful area at the beach but I was mournful for my family every second. I'm sad to see Frank there But completely understand. He doesn't want to be housed cause then he will be alone. A week after me and Bobby left Venice, a new couple was sleeping in our spot and got beat up in the middle of the night and was in intensive care. Gangbangers thought it was us. Frank . Such a sweetheart. I learned a lot out there about this human condition. Everyone has a story. ......
Frank is a real one! Used to hang with him for weeks at a time when I was homeless in Venice. I lived in Venice, then became homeless. Now, back on my feet, Praise Jah!
I understand being homeless, but I don't understand all that trash and shit they have. Yes, I understand California doesn't want to force the homeless away due to legal reason. But co'mon. They can enforce keeping that shit clean or some kinda of structure. This is beyond unsanitary, disgusting, and pathetic. Both on the people living in that crap, and the city.

Most of the money to help the homeless gets pocketed by the agencies. The people who own the shelter im staying at all drive the latest bmws and bentleys. La housing programs are nothing but money pits and they hold on to motel vouchers for drear life instead of giving it to the needy. Why should the politicians end homelessness when that's how they make their money to live in luxury.

He said “it’s a way of life” and he was referring to having to live in dangerous situations when you live in a big city wether you’re living in the streets or in an apartment.
This is a mental health problem not a homeless problem. The housing issue is a symptom of the bigger issue. I spent two years volunteering at a non profit in San Diego that works with homeless population.
I have been “voluntarily homeless” for 10 years living in a 30 year old RV. I park out on federal land in Arizona, Utah and Nevada. I move with the weather. By my estimate I have saved anout $100,000 by not having to pay rent or utilities. Currently saving up for an ocean-going sailboat and I will sail away forever.
barney barns I am inside the RV when I need to work on the conputer/internet, when it rains, or when I want to chill, read, watch UA-cam/Netflix. But I spend hours outside each day hiking, biking, kayaking, or just sitting outside watching birds. And I have my big boy toys (drone, rockets, telescope, guns, etc) to keep me occupied. And living off the grind I spend 5-10 hrs a week fixing minor issues with the RV, solar power, electronics, and improvements.

I agree. I traveled to California several times in the 1990's (1995 to 1998) and I didn't see any homeless tents back then. I traveled all around in Los Angeles, Van Nays, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Long Beach....and not one homeless person did I see.
Dude he interviews has a point. No one wants to live by rules of rental properties etc. however - if he was provided a place to stay and means to better his healthy. He could still go an layout on the beach, watch the moon, stars and sky at any point. No one says you have to stay indoors.
It’s nice to see that someone actually wants to help these people instead of giving the labels and being judgemental. So many people are only two pay checks away from being homeless so never judge; if you can be just one thing...be kind
It's really nice you're giving people their names and dignity. Tell them jerks whom think you should do more to do anything themselves. It's easy to say what you'd do when you're watching it on a screen.

Venice has ALWAYS had a homeless problem but no one gave a shit until it became "silicon beach", once the rich moved in, drove up property values and pushed out the original residents this became an issue. This is what happens when a once affordable area becomes one of the most expensive places to live in the US.
So then they should seek life elsewhere. Plenty of jobs and affordable housing outside California. Right or wrong, setting up camp on the street will get you nowhere in life.

This guy in blue shirt is 100% what southern cali homeless is all about. He has money, pension, he could rent a bedroom in san diego for 300 month for low income or 600, which I did for 2 months last year, but he doesn't want rules or to be away from his friends, and often they have dogs, which makes it impossible for cheap housing, i stayed in san diego hotels this summer, 30% rooms are now for the homeles,everyone of them has 30 visitors to their room per day easily. You will not find a more social group in America than the homeless
I stay in san diego, were did you stay for 300-600$??? Was it a roach infested sgit hole? Iv lived here my whole life , in a bad area of San Diego ,spring valley , rent here ina area were you can get shot for going to the wrong liquor store is 1000 and up and thats renting a room, unless you have some friends that in reality let you stay with them , or you came for 2 days and used an air bnb, useing hotels in san diego is a joke , we give homeless people free hotels
Yup! I'm retired LE in SoCal, and many of the homeless people I interacted with ended up where I worked via bus, especially from the mid-west. They called it, "Grayhound therapy." Southern California has warm weather most of the year, and many of the cities provide free food and other services. It's a magnet...

First, don't let anyone tell you you're not an excellent imterviewer. You'll always have know it all, haters. Your interview skills are phenomenal. Through your time spent with Frank, we have a good understanding of Frank's situation. Certainly, my heat bleeds to see a Veteran living on the streets but a traditional lifestyle is clearly not for Frank. There are too many rules that he cannot honor. He would miss the socialization of the other street people. He and most likely others need an alternate lifestyle to survive. Just a thought .... possibly a dedicated plot of land, with perhaps trailers or 'tiny houses' where the homeless could live without being a burden on established neighborhoods or municipal sidewalks? Our medical system sucks. Doctors push drugs for almost everything trying to mask symptoms rather than address causes which create the symptoms. If they cannot find a gov approved one to do this, the patient is left to suffer with whatever ailments for the rest of his life. It is extremely difficult to find inner motivation to do anything when suffering chronic pain like this guy experiences. In its stupid War on Opioids, the fed gov took away this treatment option for almost everyone. The other pain drugs don't typically work on these types of folks. So, their options are to lay around in horrible pain 24-7 or lay around with less or no pain doped up with street drugs. This of course is not the only solution. What does the average person do when faced with a sea of clueless, mediocre medical professionals wanting to mask symptoms with Big Pharma drugs? Finding an affordable expert who actually knows how to figure out and solve causes is like finding a needle in a hay stack. One day you too will be in severe chronic pain. Almost everyone goes through this at some point. That or perhaps some other problem with be your own wake up moment into realizing how horrible the medical system in this country is.

@biff s the game is all in your head. He said he keeps the money where it is because if he parties everyone is welcome and he spends all of it. What kind of thinking is that. The game again is in his head and if he wants to progress and get better he can do it but if he is mentally lazy and tired then he will stay as he is plain and simple and pretty sad.
I've seen quite a few interviews you've given and I think you give excellent interviews. People open up to you because you are not judgemental. You're a very comfortable and personable guy.. 👍👍
The people have to want to get better and get off drugs/alchohol. If not, nothing will change except maybe they will go downhill even farther. If the city or county allows the tent cities, no one will want to be around it no matter what people say in public. You are doing a great job. Most people make the decision to live this way mostly due to drugs. Some are there only due to mental illness, but that number is quite a bit lower.

You look familiar, I was raised in Venice/Culver City and this is home to me. It breaks my heart. Homeless have always been a part of Venice. I talk to homeless people and befriended a few throughout the years. I see both sides of the issue. I understand the homeowners frustrations and concern, while respecting the homeless people’s right to exist. There needs to be adequate services from the government and city, but they fail to provide proper measures to address this issue. The trash is unsightly, the needles and health hazards (I.e. RVs dumping poop and homeless people urinating and defecating in the street). I, too, was homeless and slept at Venice Beach one summer. I was a heroin addict and met many people at the Methadone clinic on Lincoln next to Lincoln Fine Wines. The stories I heard are the most heartbreaking part. God bless everybody. May the government and the people come together to solve this problem in a humane and respectful way
Just cause you're not drunk don't make you sober... He's into opioids. My quadroplegic aunt used that stuff and you could tell when her morphine pump in her stomach needed to be refilled... Before she got that installed she was in college. Bachelors for her master's... That shut her down and she died with in like five years if it, though she did have other issues. The accident crippled her when she was ten she got the pump I believe when she was 35 ish and died before 40.

They weren’t offer an apartment. They offered to institutionalize him for a month in a hotel where he would have to stay all by himself. They would control what he did and who came to visit and for how long and when he could come and go.... I’m pretty sure that if they offered him an actual apartment and was allowed to live there like an adult, he would have taken it.

He was told that he would only be allowed to be at the hotel room for a month. While he’s there, he can’t have visitors and he would be watched and controlled at every hour. Essentially, he would be institutionalized in a hotel, which is why he said he’d rather be in the street. Honestly, the hotel situation doesn’t sound like a very sweet deal at all
I bet a lot of these people who are judging homeless people for not wanting to follow rules that control their entire lives to get into shelter are the same people who think that having to wear a mask in a store for a few minutes to save lives is a horrendous attack on their freedom. Homeless shelters are dangerous places packed with too many people and there are far more rules than just no drugs or alcohol that people keep citing as an excuse to attack these people. None of these people attacking the homeless would be willing to live by the rules of homeless shelters. People don't deserve to lose their freedom just because they're poor.
This is a man whose life was ended when his son gone "missing" and gained chronic pain. To many stories out there about men losing everything and drowning in depression.
I'm about to be in the same boat. My son and wife got killed in a car crash. Now, i could care less what happens to me. I have no motivation for money, work or anything else. I wished euthanasia was legal.
My daughter has been homeless for 4 1/2 years. It’s been so hard to watch/ help. I got involved helping the homeless here in Seattle- it’s rough here too. I can tell you that 80% of the homeless are either mentally ill or addicts. It’s so heartbreaking, however I have learned the hard way that there is a very fine line between compassion/enablement. As a recovering addict myself and someone with old wounds and PTSD- there is a point where COMPLETE SELF-HONESTY and a desire to live better is the first requirement to get truly well. It’s a long hard road, but can be done. Many people want a hand-up, but not until they want to do better for self- not for others. I feel so much for the homeless- but is indeed a meeting in the middle situation.

Funilly enough I was going to ask you myself to do a video by the golds gym because I saw it on the news how homeless has spread, you did an amazing job I dont think people should complain about your interview techniques, you do an amazing job. I find it interesting that instead of providing the homeless with jobs, the state provides them with tents, and grocery carts. Just proves that the state has no intention of actually helping them.

Venice has changed quickly. I lived south of V awhile back and always loved the free spirited energy. Of course there was homelessness present but roads I’ve enjoyed riding the O’ 🚲 down are now completely filled with tents. My guess is a 90% increase from the videos you’ve shown. These ppl need help... but this guy seemed happy to be on the street.
You are helping the people by brining awareness! Don’t listen to people who don’t know anything. This is happening in every major city in NORTH America! This needs more exposure.
I'm from Detroit and this all looks like something I couldn't deal with even for a short visit. That says a lot. Venice Beach is not supposed to be this way, Detroit is, but it's not. I'm sad for everyone who is homeless but I don't feel taking over the streets is the answer. It's not safe for anyone like this. I couldn't imagine sleeping with one eye open. I've been homeless but this is a hot mess.
It would be good to see a interview with someone who was homeless through economic reasons , i don't think you can really do anything for people that only exist for drugs , Thumbs up , keep up the good work , you are gaining a real following .

Mr. German in Venice, You're a cool dude. I like your videos, and aside from a small detour between 1978-82 I lived in L.A. since 1968. I remember going to Santa Monica back in 77 ( before my exile ) on the bus from the valley countless times with my friend Randy ( his dad was a manager at Ralphs or Luckeys, or some grocery store ) and we would walk the beach diwn to Venice. Good times, better memories🤠. After coming back, as a 20-something, I remember going down straight to Venice. What a great place, pre 1983; even the boardwalk was'nt as crazy as the 90's, or even into the 00's but, so many times I hung out down there. I live in Laos now, running a small burger dive and came accross your videos. The last time I remember being down at Venice was maybe 2013, I remember seeing alot of transients, but nothing on the scale that you have shown lately. As for the haters, let them hate. I like your content.

All the homeless in the U.S. come to California because of the weather and the liberal policies. They receive more help then other places in the U.S., and they are hardly ever harassed by law enforcement because of the liberal policies enacted by liberal politicians. The businesses here pay some of the highest rents in the U.S. but receive no help from their local government even though they pay extremely large amounts of taxes. It is sad to see what these policies have done to California over the years, and it is only going to get worse.
Your interview with this homeless veteran puts a human face on the abstract issue of homelessness. Very appreciative of your work. But for the grace of God there goeth I.

I lived in Venice from 2004-2013 I caught the tail end of the glory that was venice. It was a time in history for sure. Before hipsters. Speak easies, parties, live music everyday, artists, eccentrics.... then came google and Snapchat and all the like... and now it’s a like this .... Hmmmmm

There is always spaces available almost anywhere if one is not a drug addict. Problem is alot are are homeless because of drugs and theyre ok with it. If you cannot make the effort to try and save yourself how could one expect someone else should do it for them.

Absolutely not. I have a friend I need to meet who lives in Venice Beach and I don't want to visit him because of the homelessness all over the place. I'm from Detroit so that says alot. I see it as dangerous and annoying.
Depends. If they keep to themselves and don’t cause trouble, then no one should mind. But regarding the ones who do drugs, cause trouble, etc., and if they refuse help, then it’s understandable to condemn.

I have sympathy for these people. But, as a working 65 year old man in Wisconsin, the only way I could afford to live in Venice Beach would be to move in to a tent.
You dont help homeless drug addicts. Dont waste your time or effort trying to help someone that WILL NOT help themselves! If they want to live poor and beg for everything then they should be transported to really poor regions of the world. I mean why not bring them to a land fill....it would literally be home to them.

My friend Frank. I am proud to say that. He saved my life once. I was homeless for 3 years. This is a genuine person. And yes, substance abuse factors in but this man is kind. Bobby and Amy say hi! It hurts to see him still living like that.

@Blue Savage I told a Sucidal Tendancy gangbanger off. We were all sleeping in an alley that boarded Ocean Front walk. It was around 3a.m. and I had to pee. I had been warned not to go to the bathrooms at night, but I didn't listen. This guy came up and was trying to give me dope. Meth. I said no . He wouldn't stop. Came to where we were sleeping and tried to push it on my man. He said no too. Guy just kept on and on. My boyfriend got up and thumped on him. Dude took off but came back so my Bobby got up and chased him. I was sitting there alone and the gangbangers came rolling up. Started verbally harassing me. Took my big umbrella. (I have a brain tumor, inoperable, and that California sunshine was killing me. So I traded a full length leopard spotted coat with a hood for that big umbrella), well. I sat there a minute and jumped up and started yelling as I walked up to them. I told them "Oh hell to the FUCK NO! I been married to a very mean man for 23 years and you ain't got nothing on him. AND my boyfriend is satan. You might have a gun but you got to be mean enough to pull the trigger. I'm not afraid of you and you can suck my left tit.) And I took my umbrella back and went to my spot. So Bobby comes back a bit later and told me it was a gang. They take their gangbanging seriously. I didn't realize. The next night we were all settling down and Frank came over and "Bobby and Amy, one over to my spot and smoke a bowl with me." So we were sitting with Frank and the gang came rolling. Now Frank knows all the politics on the boardwalk. He knew they were going to roll up. Frank liked us, we had street cred because Bubbles was choking and we helped her. So Frank intervened and when they came up we were all talking they said wheres that couple that stays in that spot? Nobody said nothing and I just kept talking and ignored them. Frank knew they were coming. It was really dark so they really didn't know for sure. We never slept in Venice again. We went to the Palisades. Got our life back now. It humbled me greatly. I never in my life thought I would ever be in that position. I was a Sunday School teacher. Brain tumor, 4 strokes and brain surgery, a crazy alcohol drug addict husband later and i went crazy. I ran away cause he always said if I left he would kill me. So I went as far away as I could on this North American continent. I ran away to the edge of the world and I lived on the beach there. The group I got in with was AWESOME. 3 years out there watching the wheels go by. I ended up brea,ing both my feet at the same time. Bobby kept being harassed for 2 years by this guy and he ended up beating him up and had to to prison for a year. So I was out there alone for 5 months. My mom had died and I told my Daddy I was giving him my portion of the inheritance. She was his wife before she was my mom and hestill, had to live. My sister got her husband's nephew to come get me and take me to a notary and I signed away my money. I had a spot on the bluffs looking at the Pacific. So then I was alone in a tent. The key is to be invisible. I never put a tent groundless. Always hidden. They don't want to see you cause they don't want to be you. When I broke my feet my sister that had my daddy with her, she asked me how much money did I need to buy me a place. I live in North Carolina and years ago you could buy a used trailer, mobile home, for $5000. So thats what I said. I used to clean houses in Cary, really high end, McMansions. But this brain tumor, i kept falling out in customers homes. Then I had a wreck and had to buy another car. So I had a car payment and rent fell behind and i got evicted. But I was still working cause I had my car. I was sleeping in a barn on the farm where my husband and I raised our 4 children. I helped build that barn. For 2 weeks I did that. My oldest grandbaby found me in there. He asked me why I was sleeping in the barn. Because all my grown children were scornful of me for leaving their Daddy. They were mad at me for leaving but at least I left their daddy breathing. I was gonna pick a fight and cut his boat in half with a saw and make him kill me, but I left instead.I came back to the area after a year away. I had 8grand babies. Now I have 19. But his daddy died and I went to the funeral and my husband's girlfriend hates my Guts and gave him hell and he took a gun after the funeral when a 100 people were at the house and shot holes in the ceiling. Later that weekend he killed my dog. So I left again and went all the way to California. So I knew if I could just buy a trailer to live in and just pay lot rent then I could have somewhere to live cause when I was cleaning houses and paying rent I was starving. Bills took it all. So my sis sent me $7000 and I came back to NC and spent 6 weeks at my daughters and found a beautiful park and thought no way could afford one of those because prices have gone up now. Need like 12,000. But my daughter called the number and by some miracle this guy was selling his and said 5,000. So we went to a notary and i gave him 5 000 cash and got the receipt. So now can afford to live. I used to sing a song when I was homeless. By Everclear, but I changed the words. Its about buying a new life:

And I did. Speak it and bring it to you. The universe is listening. If I had known that breaking g my feet would get me my life back, I would have took a baseball bat to them. I never knew to this day how much money my inheritance was. I didn't read anything, I just signed cause I didn't give 2 f's about it, I loved my Daddy and that was my part of helping care for him. But my sister gave me enough for a miracle to take place for me. I missed my kids and grandbabies. I got my life back. Yes I was homeless but I turned that over and fucked it in the ass. I fell in with the PCH WRECKING CREW baby and we had a blast. We weren't like the rest of the homeless cause we weren't desperate anymore. Mentality. It was hell in paradise for me. Beautiful area at the beach but I was mournful for my family every second. I'm sad to see Frank there But completely understand. He doesn't want to be housed cause then he will be alone. A week after me and Bobby left Venice, a new couple was sleeping in our spot and got beat up in the middle of the night and was in intensive care. Gangbangers thought it was us. Frank . Such a sweetheart. I learned a lot out there about this human condition. Everyone has a story. ......

I have been “voluntarily homeless” for 10 years living in a 30 year old RV. I park out on federal land in Arizona, Utah and Nevada. I move with the weather. By my estimate I have saved anout $100,000 by not having to pay rent or utilities. Currently saving up for an ocean-going sailboat and I will sail away forever.
That sounds pretty cool. My only worry living like that is the boredom. Don't you get bored just sitting in a RV all the time?
barney barns I am inside the RV when I need to work on the conputer/internet, when it rains, or when I want to chill, read, watch UA-cam/Netflix. But I spend hours outside each day hiking, biking, kayaking, or just sitting outside watching birds. And I have my big boy toys (drone, rockets, telescope, guns, etc) to keep me occupied. And living off the grind I spend 5-10 hrs a week fixing minor issues with the RV, solar power, electronics, and improvements.

I agree. I traveled to California several times in the 1990's (1995 to 1998) and I didn't see any homeless tents back then. I traveled all around in Los Angeles, Van Nays, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Long Beach....and not one homeless person did I see.
Oh no. This is a very recent phenomenon. I've been here 13 years. It's only been the last few years that things blew up like this.

Venice has ALWAYS had a homeless problem but no one gave a shit until it became "silicon beach", once the rich moved in, drove up property values and pushed out the original residents this became an issue. This is what happens when a once affordable area becomes one of the most expensive places to live in the US.

This guy in blue shirt is 100% what southern cali homeless is all about. He has money, pension, he could rent a bedroom in san diego for 300 month for low income or 600, which I did for 2 months last year, but he doesn't want rules or to be away from his friends, and often they have dogs, which makes it impossible for cheap housing, i stayed in san diego hotels this summer, 30% rooms are now for the homeles,everyone of them has 30 visitors to their room per day easily. You will not find a more social group in America than the homeless

Yup! I'm retired LE in SoCal, and many of the homeless people I interacted with ended up where I worked via bus, especially from the mid-west. They called it, "Grayhound therapy." Southern California has warm weather most of the year, and many of the cities provide free food and other services. It's a magnet...

First, don't let anyone tell you you're not an excellent imterviewer. You'll always have know it all, haters. Your interview skills are phenomenal. Through your time spent with Frank, we have a good understanding of Frank's situation. Certainly, my heat bleeds to see a Veteran living on the streets but a traditional lifestyle is clearly not for Frank. There are too many rules that he cannot honor. He would miss the socialization of the other street people. He and most likely others need an alternate lifestyle to survive. Just a thought .... possibly a dedicated plot of land, with perhaps trailers or 'tiny houses' where the homeless could live without being a burden on established neighborhoods or municipal sidewalks?

He does not like rules, well sorry it is on him to be on the streets.
Our medical system sucks. Doctors push drugs for almost everything trying to mask symptoms rather than address causes which create the symptoms. If they cannot find a gov approved one to do this, the patient is left to suffer with whatever ailments for the rest of his life.
It is extremely difficult to find inner motivation to do anything when suffering chronic pain like this guy experiences. In its stupid War on Opioids, the fed gov took away this treatment option for almost everyone. The other pain drugs don't typically work on these types of folks. So, their options are to lay around in horrible pain 24-7 or lay around with less or no pain doped up with street drugs.
This of course is not the only solution. What does the average person do when faced with a sea of clueless, mediocre medical professionals wanting to mask symptoms with Big Pharma drugs? Finding an affordable expert who actually knows how to figure out and solve causes is like finding a needle in a hay stack.
One day you too will be in severe chronic pain. Almost everyone goes through this at some point. That or perhaps some other problem with be your own wake up moment into realizing how horrible the medical system in this country is.

The people have to want to get better and get off drugs/alchohol. If not, nothing will change except maybe they will go downhill even farther. If the city or county allows the tent cities, no one will want to be around it no matter what people say in public. You are doing a great job. Most people make the decision to live this way mostly due to drugs. Some are there only due to mental illness, but that number is quite a bit lower.

You look familiar, I was raised in Venice/Culver City and this is home to me. It breaks my heart. Homeless have always been a part of Venice. I talk to homeless people and befriended a few throughout the years. I see both sides of the issue. I understand the homeowners frustrations and concern, while respecting the homeless people’s right to exist. There needs to be adequate services from the government and city, but they fail to provide proper measures to address this issue. The trash is unsightly, the needles and health hazards (I.e. RVs dumping poop and homeless people urinating and defecating in the street). I, too, was homeless and slept at Venice Beach one summer. I was a heroin addict and met many people at the Methadone clinic on Lincoln next to Lincoln Fine Wines. The stories I heard are the most heartbreaking part. God bless everybody. May the government and the people come together to solve this problem in a humane and respectful way

Just cause you're not drunk don't make you sober... He's into opioids. My quadroplegic aunt used that stuff and you could tell when her morphine pump in her stomach needed to be refilled... Before she got that installed she was in college. Bachelors for her master's... That shut her down and she died with in like five years if it, though she did have other issues. The accident crippled her when she was ten she got the pump I believe when she was 35 ish and died before 40.

They weren’t offer an apartment. They offered to institutionalize him for a month in a hotel where he would have to stay all by himself. They would control what he did and who came to visit and for how long and when he could come and go.... I’m pretty sure that if they offered him an actual apartment and was allowed to live there like an adult, he would have taken it.

He was told that he would only be allowed to be at the hotel room for a month. While he’s there, he can’t have visitors and he would be watched and controlled at every hour. Essentially, he would be institutionalized in a hotel, which is why he said he’d rather be in the street. Honestly, the hotel situation doesn’t sound like a very sweet deal at all
I bet a lot of these people who are judging homeless people for not wanting to follow rules that control their entire lives to get into shelter are the same people who think that having to wear a mask in a store for a few minutes to save lives is a horrendous attack on their freedom.
Homeless shelters are dangerous places packed with too many people and there are far more rules than just no drugs or alcohol that people keep citing as an excuse to attack these people.
None of these people attacking the homeless would be willing to live by the rules of homeless shelters. People don't deserve to lose their freedom just because they're poor.
This is a man whose life was ended when his son gone "missing" and gained chronic pain. To many stories out there about men losing everything and drowning in depression.
I'm about to be in the same boat. My son and wife got killed in a car crash. Now, i could care less what happens to me. I have no motivation for money, work or anything else. I wished euthanasia was legal.

I got involved helping the homeless here in Seattle- it’s rough here too.
I can tell you that 80% of the homeless are either mentally ill or addicts.
It’s so heartbreaking, however I have learned the hard way that there is a very fine line between compassion/enablement.
As a recovering addict myself and someone with old wounds and PTSD- there is a point where COMPLETE SELF-HONESTY and a desire to live better is the first requirement to get truly well. It’s a long hard road, but can be done.
Many people want a hand-up, but not until they want to do better for self- not for others.
I feel so much for the homeless- but is indeed a meeting in the middle situation.

I find it interesting that instead of providing the homeless with jobs, the state provides them with tents, and grocery carts. Just proves that the state has no intention of actually helping them.

How about someone decides to live on your front lawn. Rules. How about a drunk driver kills your child. Rules. Necessary and no same person doesn't want them.
Venice has changed quickly. I lived south of V awhile back and always loved the free spirited energy. Of course there was homelessness present but roads I’ve enjoyed riding the O’ 🚲 down are now completely filled with tents. My guess is a 90% increase from the videos you’ve shown. These ppl need help... but this guy seemed happy to be on the street.

I'm from Detroit and this all looks like something I couldn't deal with even for a short visit. That says a lot. Venice Beach is not supposed to be this way, Detroit is, but it's not. I'm sad for everyone who is homeless but I don't feel taking over the streets is the answer. It's not safe for anyone like this. I couldn't imagine sleeping with one eye open. I've been homeless but this is a hot mess.

You're a cool dude. I like your videos, and aside from a small detour between 1978-82 I lived in L.A. since 1968. I remember going to Santa Monica back in 77 ( before my exile ) on the bus from the valley countless times with my friend Randy ( his dad was a manager at Ralphs or Luckeys, or some grocery store ) and we would walk the beach diwn to Venice. Good times, better memories🤠. After coming back, as a 20-something, I remember going down straight to Venice. What a great place, pre 1983; even the boardwalk was'nt as crazy as the 90's, or even into the 00's but, so many times I hung out down there. I live in Laos now, running a small burger dive and came accross your videos. The last time I remember being down at Venice was maybe 2013, I remember seeing alot of transients, but nothing on the scale that you have shown lately. As for the haters, let them hate. I like your content.

All the homeless in the U.S. come to California because of the weather and the liberal policies. They receive more help then other places in the U.S., and they are hardly ever harassed by law enforcement because of the liberal policies enacted by liberal politicians. The businesses here pay some of the highest rents in the U.S. but receive no help from their local government even though they pay extremely large amounts of taxes. It is sad to see what these policies have done to California over the years, and it is only going to get worse.
Your interview with this homeless veteran puts a human face on the abstract issue of homelessness. Very appreciative of your work. But for the grace of God there goeth I.

I caught the tail end of the glory that was venice. It was a time in history for sure. Before hipsters. Speak easies, parties, live music everyday, artists, eccentrics.... then came google and Snapchat and all the like... and now it’s a like this ....

Liked and shared! I feel for the guy talking about work related injuries... I can tell you from experience, it sucks when you incurr an injury that will never fully heal while busting your ass to make $12/hr.
I worked very hard at my job that only paid $3.35 per hour in 1988. I don't even know how much I really got after taxes were taken out.
Cities should help homeless people, but letting them set up tents on public sidewalks should not be tolerated.
Liberal Democrat law is that they can not be moved or relocated.

There is always spaces available almost anywhere if one is not a drug addict. Problem is alot are are homeless because of drugs and theyre ok with it. If you cannot make the effort to try and save yourself how could one expect someone else should do it for them.

Absolutely not. I have a friend I need to meet who lives in Venice Beach and I don't want to visit him because of the homelessness all over the place. I'm from Detroit so that says alot. I see it as dangerous and annoying.

Depends. If they keep to themselves and don’t cause trouble, then no one should mind. But regarding the ones who do drugs, cause trouble, etc., and if they refuse help, then it’s understandable to condemn.

I have sympathy for these people. But, as a working 65 year old man in Wisconsin, the only way I could afford to live in Venice Beach would be to move in to a tent.
You dont help homeless drug addicts. Dont waste your time or effort trying to help someone that WILL NOT help themselves! If they want to live poor and beg for everything then they should be transported to really poor regions of the world. I mean why not bring them to a land fill....it would literally be home to them.
