Back during 1990's i lived in a homeless mission, and later became a manager, because i learned quick on how to use a computer. Every friday when the trains rolled into the train yards the hobo's averaged about 6 or 7 would come to the mission for the night, where they could get fed, dinner, breakfast a nice hot shower and some clean clothes.. They were an interesting lot, with their stories of their travels on the rails. A few, once in a while would stay at the mission for a month or so, going out for day labor, and save some money, tell me what life on the rail was really like.. I almost went on the rails with them and they would show my loops, but i chickened out. The thing about then is that most of then did not want to change their life, they were happy living as hobo's

This breaks my heart to see that California has fallen so low .... back in my day 60's and 70's ... we hitched out to California and lived on the streets too because the weather is perfect for that , but few of us were drug addicts and very few of us would even think of being so scummy as to build tarp houses on the streets ... we''d walk for miles to find some out of the way place to sleep.
Times have really changed for the worse for sure.
Coming from an old Street Person I can say what caused this is a combination of things , mostly this came from California wanting to treat people decently so they decriminalized drugs and homelessness ..but these decent and good people were basing their ideas on this in a past history sort of way .
Most of the people who enacted these new laws are older and they remember a better type of street people who were constantly harassed by cops for no good reason at all ... but rather than realize this new breed on the streets is 100% different that what they had experience with .... they think this new situation must be the same as it was years ago ... so IE. Decent people Fucked up here and the only way to fix this problem is re-criminalize drug use on the street and bring back laws that make it a crime to set up house on city streets ...that will end this problem very quickly ... and it should be dealt with because this has nothing to do with high housing costs or job loss , these people are coming to California to simply take advantage of the new lax laws that allow them to get away with things few States would ever put up with.

If you made homelessness illegal, how would you punish people sleeping on the streets? Fines? They don't have any money to pay them? Jail? There's not enough capacity to house them. Should you free up prison space by releasing murderers and rapists instead? If California got tougher on the issue, the people would only move somewhere else, creating a problem for another state. It's a complicated issue that has no easy answers.

Wow! Imagine experiencing 'agesism' when your homeless? Thats crazy! What do the Los Angeles social services think? That once your over 25 your life suddenly becomes 'together' and you have everything figured out? I feel that the homeless couple should shelter up anyway the street just isn't safe! A shelter provides: a hot shower, a place to wash your clothes, and a bed. Basically if you don't wish to be around anyone just get up an hour early before anyone else is up & take off! Then return just right before curfew/lights out. I've stayed in a shelter before, so I know that there are some crazies there.

It's only the neighbourhood of Hollywood that caters to homeless youth. Downtown L.A, Santa Monica, Venice, etc. have services mostly for adults. I was a homeless street punk on Hollywood Blvd. for 9 months in 1993 as a 19-year-old girl/young woman. I often slept in the lovely, quiet nature of Runyon Canyon Park.
There was one shelter that only took minors under 18. It almost always had empty beds because kids that young were not common. Then I learned that another whole entire brand new shelter was being built, only for teens aged 14-16. The people running that one must have had to do a publicity campaign around the country luring children to run away to Hollywood in order to create the need. It made me uneasy. What were the true motivations of the 'do gooders' in that situation?

Contrary to the homeless advocate grifters who “manage” the 100s of millions of taxpayer dollars being dumped their way to line their own pockets there is no housing shortage. There is a substance abuse and mental illness problem that will never be solved by the resources being offered to them. The homeless are here to take advantage of the mild weather, generous handouts and complete lack of enforcement of the laws to keep the community safe. Only the homeless’ rights to steal, assault, defecate and completely trash every area they occupy are to be respected and tolerated. The rights of the homeowners, business people and workers are to spat upon and mocked for wanting to keep the city safe and clean, they mean nothing except as a source of money to grab and give to the homeless.

They've both got hand tattoos so they've both made the decision to mark themselves in a way that makes them very unlikely to get hired for legal work. There are things like Labor Ready and learning to detail cars, hell in fact there are all kinds of odd jobs like painting, learning window painting if you're artistic, all sorts of things but these are the professional underclass and their profession is the easy stuff - dealing drugs, begging, stealing, various con-artist things.

@@alexcarter8807 Letting a heroin addict live in your backyard in a shed is just asking for problems. She needs to be in a group living center based around a drug rehabilitation program. I propose legalizing all drugs and using taxes from sales to responsible users to fund turning all the old malls Amazon has closed into communal living centers for homeless people. Drugs will be provided for free to all addicts willing to live in the communal living centers and participate in counseling and education programs. This way you wean them off the drugs slowly and give them food, housing, medical, and vocational training as they are able. Many will be able to work through their addictions and transition to independent living, eventually.
