    Not a professional repair but... It's a good video if you're an inexperienced installer. Thumps up ! It's aimed to help the home owner and save the overpriced cost of hiring a pro roofer. Good video!!

    Wrong. Put the nails where the upper and lower parts of the shingle are laminated. That's where the strength of the nails head holds best. If you look at the nailing pattern on the blown off area you can see that the nails were installed too high. I can bet that 90 percent of that roof is nailed high . 47 years a roofer. Larry

      "Put the nails where the upper and lower parts of the shingle are laminated."
      So where should they be nailed?

    • @shooter77us
      @shooter77us 3 роки тому +1

      @@Fisherguy01 They need to be just above the exposed face of the shingle through both layers where they are laminated together.

    That's awesome! Currently under high winds etc. from Hurricane Harvey and hoping I won't need to fix my roof but I won't know until the system clears out fully. I love being up on my roof though. :D It's not really flat but kinda flat... very small gently slope. :P I used to be scared of heights though but when I was about 15 years old I really wanted to get over it so I did. I was in Boston and I went to the very top of this tall skyscraper that had an all glass viewing room on top. I leaned my head against the glass and looked down. I stayed until I was not scared anymore. Took a bit - maybe 45 minutes - but 30 years later and still no fear of heights. :) In fact - soon as I get in a bit better shape - going to skydive. :D - Heidi

    Matting shingles is just something we don't get in this country. Corrugated iron and tiles are the more common roofs. It's just a weird system but it seems like it would be cheap but quite waterproof laid properly. Anyways great video Tom!
    Also the guys here always use safety harnesses and have a number of rings welded/bolted onto the roof structure where they can attach their harness; useful for doing roof inspection/repairs but then again we're a two story house - it's a long way to fall so a bit of extra precaution is a good thing. :)

      Yep shingles are cheaper than a lot of other methods, and as you can see pretty easy to repair. The only real downside is if you get a dishonest roofer you can get sold cheap shingles that will fly off in low winds and its hard for someone not an expert to tell the difference by just looking.

      Yuki Fox Very true. Singles are a quick and relatively inexpensive roofing system. Custom homes may have a more elaborate roof and metal rooves are becoming more common. Professional roofers do wear safety harnesses, but my house is only one story so it's not that high. Thanks for watching.

      Robert Rockey Unfortunately, you have to do your homework on any contractor to make sure they are reputable. However a good one is week worth the money

    The reason the shingles blew off is because the nails were in the wrong place, too high on the shingle. You just put the nails back in the same wrong place. They need to be just above the exposed face of the shingle through both layers of the shingle where they are laminated together. Your whole roof is nailed wrong. Over your left shoulder is a bunch of obvious wind lifts.

    at the end you had a long seem in the shingles. how does it not leak.

    i was reading suppose to stagger/feather the shingle layout.
    That bricked/stacked layout leaves gaps between shingles for water to fall between doesn't it?

    I have exactly that problem but water tends to pond , what do you suggest? Maybe to put wood under to flatten the roof and then the shingle on top?

    Good video, thank you. One point of critique though: you mention that you should put the nails inside the tar lines (which is correct), but it looks like you put the nails outside of the tar lines. I'm talking about the first shingle you're nailing down.

      Maikel Versantvoort I don't see where, but if I did that's my bad.

    how would one know when the roof shingles need to be replaced?

    • @HomeCraftChronicles
      @HomeCraftChronicles 7 років тому +5

      dymondwillow2 I found mine laying on the ground. That was a pretty good clue. Seriously though, unless they are damaged fir some reason, like a storm, a roof should last a minimum of 20 years.

      Simple straightforward and wrong very wrong. When you put the last shingle in he lined up two key ways, seems, joints. That roof will definitely leak. This man has never roofs in his life. And for him to say how easy it was makes me laugh

    Nailed improperly and all the water lines are to close .. that roof is going to leak

  • @peterjanzen5703
    @peterjanzen5703 3 роки тому +1

    This is mostly incorrect and likely to result with the same shingles blowing off again. You should remove this instructional video and replace it with more competent instruction. The roof was done improperly to begin with.. any roofer would have taken the opportunity to address that first.
