Repairing Leaking Shingle Roof
Вставка

- We find evidence of a leaking roof by water stains on the ceiling. Upon investigating the roof we see no visible damage but find an obvious soft spot. We show you how we removed the shingles and bad spot in the roof, and then repair the roof with new wood and shingles. This is done on a mobile/manufactured home, however basic concepts are the same for conventionally built homes.
I’m not specialize on roofing work at all, and had learned a lot from your video. However, I do believe that you forgot to place waterproof tar paper before you place shingles back to that area?!
I’m working on a very basic leak near the edge of the roof, and this walkthrough was very helpful. Thank you.

Hey man, I'm a contractor assistant, studying for my G.C. I wanna thank you. My company inherited a f***Ed up roof, and your video gave me some ideas on diagnosis and treatment. So I took this project on solo to prove to the boss I'm more than a day laborer. I'm a dude with a brain and a gift for physical exertion. Thanks brother.
@@shedara2008 😭😭😭😭😂
Are you still roofing?
Thanks Ed for the life story even though NOBODY GIVES A RATS ASS!
Thanks You good teacher
@@artv4nd3l4y you must've missed the comment before yours where someone actively showed interest.. xD
Great video. I have a hole in my roof from a branch from a tree falling and after watching this I know with confidence I can do this repair. You explain everything very well and I appreciate you making the video. Cheers.
I consider the roofing felt as the water proof membrane. the shingles are there to protect the roofing felt from the uv rays and critters from damaging the roofing felt. In extremely windy areas, I over lap the the felt 12" to 18" to prevent water from being blown up under the edge of the felt as well caulk between the layers of roofing felt. Shingles are not a waterproof membrane. Deck repair looked good. shingle placement looked good too. I always match the deck material. The paper under the shingles is the very cheapest roof waterproof membrane known. Properly installed 30 lb roofing felt will keep water from causing this kind of damage for 30 years, but it is very difficult to slip under the paper in a repair. I've removed roofs that the shingles were totally degraded and falling apart but still no leaks because of the roofing felt installed. There were a few brands of shingles that didn't require roofing felt, but the ones on this roof were not of this type. I would inspect the rest of the roof from the inside for more leaks. The crappy piece of wood was a nailer that looks like it had failed when some one stepped on it tearing the paper when the roof was new. This is is what caused the roof to leak.

@@rss608 You probably think George Floyd deserved the knee he got, you racist he was a man of under glorified dignity and his soul must be cherished.
Absolutely, why not add a membrane to the bare wood? Seems like the bare minimum to ensure not having leaks in the future again. Crazy...
Why you didn’t put paper or The plastic on top of the wood before the shingles?
Thank you so much for recording this and explaining the cut out on the truss. Funny comment on the builder. I am needing to repair a smaller section on my back porch - where the roof was flat (they didn't think to slope it) and I was forgetful to not clear out the fall leaves, that I guess rotted through the flat shingles. My only surprise was that you did not install any 'black paper' or even asphalt tape to the wood for a 2nd layer of protection. I purchased the black asphalt crack repair that can also be used for roofs. Thanks so much for recording and uploading. Now you have to fix the interior stain!:( Good Job!
Hey man!! ... I am NOT even close to being a roofer or professional roofer.... Just an average Joe who owns a home and learns as I go .... I do consider myself a fast learner and very high level worker... and I almost will never higher a professional unless it really becomes necessary... I have a similar problem as this of some sort and I will be honest this was probably 1 of about 3 other videos that really explained and helped me get an idea on how to fix my problem with very simple explanations... sometimes we need simple words instead of all the professional terminology some trades use ... thank you for your VERY helpful video sir i am very happy I came across it..
Thanks for sharing. I had to replace some broken shingles from the high winds we've had. And had a spot leaking almost exactly where yours did. Glad to have it fixed!
Thanks for sharing your Mom
Finally someone doing the task I must do soon. It's been a long time since I started near the gutter for roof repair. Thanks.
Finally your Mom stopped calling me I said it was one and done type of deal, that dumb c5nt don't know how listen real good
nice work... but I would have added paper layment before shingles
blind if you look there's some kind of tan paper ? . people don't understand about a vapor bearer[tar paper] That's why you always use asphalt paper it keep the wood from drying the shingles out to fast. you don't use felt you lose 5 or more years of roof life.
BlindSniper I know right😲💧

I wonder if putting a small sheet of tyvex would work.

Thanks a lot for the instructions i did not even know where to start with the repair on my roof, now I have enough confidence to fix the leak in my roof, keep up the good work
As a snowbird I found this video helpful and insightful and I love you long time
Great job friend! Thank you for sharing this with us. We have a roof leak right now over our utility room. As a woman, I find a roof leak so disconcerting. But I have faith that my husband can repair it, because we can certainly not afford the ridiculous cost of a new roof right now. The one thing that our ancestors had over us was that they could just replace their whole roof with what nature had to give them. They did not have to worry about a $20k new roof. We live in such a ridiculous time - even down to our cars that all have become ridiculous - a common person cannot even do simple repairs to these new cars. We've really dug ourselves a grave as a society. Sorry for the rant. I told you, I'm quite distressed right now. Peace and Love to you and yours.
What did you end up doing? Im in the same situation :(
@@user-qv3ni6nt4e My husband simply replaced the felt and the shingles watching this video and some others here on UA-cam. The plywood was still good (not rotted) so he did not need to replace that. We're not even sure at this point if it worked. Only more rain and time will tell. I will pray for you and for us!
Yeah you're right about that, I love old toyotas, I plan on using mine until I die LOL. Easy to work on and the parts are plentiful and cheap. The new ones with all the efficiency electronics plugged into the engine seem expensive and hard to work on, I know I dont want one
Thank you for taking the time to make a detailed video
I like how you took the time to do a small bit of wood repair. Many licensed roofers skip that step. We see it all the time. I have been a licensed roofing contractor for over 20 years and some of our local contractor could probably learn something from you. If yo want to see how a licensed, bonded, and insured, professional roofing contractor fixes roof leaks then check us out! Thank you for your video and keep up the good work!
I used to do roofing and repair. Loved when you said they half assed the job!!
I'm about to purchase 2 mobile homes on 5000sqft and one has a collapsed roof. This was exactly what I need thanks!
Haha you look like the type of guy who would buy a mobile home then tell people about how proud he is for being poor 😅😅😅😂😅people 😅😂😅
Thanks for the vid man. I have a big repair from a storm that just blew through and frankly don't have the cash to fix. This will help me DIY.
Very thorough and careful work. Thanks for a very informative video!
Followed this video and my roof still isn’t leaking after fixing it up. Wasn’t as nice as yours, but did the trick. THANKS A TON!
Exactly what I need to do to my mobile this weekend. Thanks for the info!
You sir, are a helpful chap! You haven given me the confidence to try this myself. Keep up the good work and instruction!
Water damage in my new mobile home roof. This video shows me exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!
Haha sucks to be you! Living in a mobile home what are you living in poverty? Haha you should move to Africa with all the other poor saps! 😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂
287K people have watched this right now. Assume 1% of them need something similar done, and assume another 1% of them go and DIY instead of hire a roofer. That is about 29 people. And assume their DIY job saves them $500 each, well you just helped save people a whole lot of beer money. Thank you for sharing this.
Great video. Explains the entire process perfectly and in detail. Thanks!
He gives great detailed advice. One of the good guys!
Great job ! THANK YOU so much for showing. I hate it when shoddy work from home builders show up on a much loved home. They should build like it's their own roof over their heads.👍
nice job , great explaining things and very good camera work . No guessing what you were doing . Thanks !
Nice video. Today i repaired a rotton spot in my roof. After words i started watching UA-cam videos. Seems i did it pretty close to the same way as you. So i must of done it the right way as a pro would. Thanks for the video.
I like the metal roof u did, I just started mine this week.so far so good.
Great work brother! Loved the simplicity of your video.
thumbs up for the metal roofing plans.
This comment is for the guy in the video , I've been roofing for 22 years , and been a licensed contractor for 15 years , anyway
about the bad comments , those bad comments usually come from people that don't understand the minimum specifications of the trade , when I was sitting in a classroom to pass the state test , I learn about the minimum requirement by the roofing industry , NOT by some idiots trying to re invent the wheel .
the only thing I would point is , you didn't use felt under the shingles, BUT...that's not a problem , I come across roof that don't have any felt AT ALL over the entire roof and they never have a water leak.
So ...if you place the nails where they supposed to be , you don't have to worry .
About the plywood sheathing ...it doesn't make any sense to upgrade to CDX , when the entire house is built with OSB.
I'm a professional roofers and I come across many CLOWNS that will never be up to my level of knowledge and they still think they can teach the roofer how to roof .
It's funny but true.
You did wonderful and keep uploading your videos and hope you master the trade some day .
I like your video !
Greetings .
Eric Garcia.
Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia looked like he did good and I was wondering about the felt......if all you home owners and diy people think your so smart why call a professional, I get the same crap with sheet rock and painting most of all you diy idiots are clueless.........
AmateurHomestead Tar Paper.....
laying felt directly onto the sheet of timber will make it sweat, then the boards rot,
ventilation is the way forward and you guys in the USA haven't a clue about ventilation .
kempouk interesting you say that I just read on the roof on our trailer portion of it and there was tons of water under the felt

Very Instructive. I feel confident to my own repairs now. Thanks

Great video very well shot explaining the whole process. Cheers!

Great job. I never have done this before but I'm pretty handy and am sure I can do it. Thanks for your vid.

Thanks. Super helpful. Exactly what I need to do with my roof
thanks, I was hit by harvey and need this. i can't afford a roofer or food.
Incredible work...Thank you for the Detailed, Informative Video, I needed all the info I could get before fixing my roof.
Not planning on doing it myself but I enjoyed learning how it is done Thanks for doing the video

Thank you so much for this video I have to do this when I get back from my current deployment
Hey man. I appreciate the video. This with help me with my upcoming roof repair. Thanks again.
Your video inspired me man, thank you so much!
The purpose t I build anything is to use the best options for the best outcome. I hate the use of cheap materials that go into the construction of houses. It makes sense to use materials that won't need replacement for decades, giving homeowners more time enjoying their homes rather fixing damages that were avoidable or hiring someone that may rob them. Thank you the video.
I've gone through most of these comments and while I agree with everyone about the underlayment I must add that IT'S CODE. Hilarious that "Roofing Solutions by Eric Garcia" says "I come across roof that don't have any felt AT ALL over the entire roof and they never have a water leak" I thought he was in California where Code is actually two layers of underlayment. So to not have any means whoever put that roof down didn't care about the Code. There is a reason that's in the building code. Call your city offices and ask for the International Residential Code and then ask them what changes the city made or added. Unless you live in an area where it never rains I doubt your local code says you don't need an underlayment.
I live in El Paso, Texas where the sun shines most of the year. It rains we hardly ever get snow, but an underlayment is still in our local code. However on my roof I took it a step further I did a layer of Tyvek and a layer of 30lb felt. Before that though I used Graco and taped the joints of the sheeting. I covered the eaves with self-sealing membrane then the Tyvek and felt.
The retired roofer that lived next door to me said, "that's never going to leak."
That was my plan. The person who had installed the prior roof violated code 1) used 3/8 inch plywood over 24O.C. rafters 2) did not use any flashing on any vent, duct for the AC, none on the chimney 3) basically glued a skylight cap down to the roof opening, no curb, no flashing, no protection whatsoever 4) no flashing in the valley no membrane just intersecting shingles sooooo I made sure I would have no problems in the future I used 5/8 plywood, underlayment as stated, proper flashing everywhere, built my own skylight curb, stuck to Code or did it better. Followed the six-nail pattern for high wind on the shingles.
Best thing I can say to everyone if you follow the Code and the instructions on the stuff you use whatever project you do will last a lot longer when done right.
Jesus Christ! You might as well built a new house! Lol He did say that this was a temporary fix. He's putting a metal roof on in a year. Just saying.
This video was very helpful because this is the exact same problem that I have on the roof that over my porch and now I know what to do thank you very much for making this video 😊💕💕👍
Thanks brother. That helped me out a lot!
Thx for sharing your experience.... please continue to do so .....! 🤙
Great video showing how to properly repair a leaky roof! I sub'd!
Great video, we have a 20+ year old roof but don't have the cash to fix all of it, so we'll have to fix what we can. I wish you would have included the tarring (not sure the terminology) part. We we're also surprised you didn't put a second layer of protection over the new wood, like several commenters have already stated - we'll probably use something. Thanks for the educational video, such a shame all mobile homes are made to fall apart after a decade or so, but this video helped.
Thanks for sharing this video it was very helpful. I hope you can upload more videos about fixing the house. God bless you
Great job! Very helpful.
Thanks for sharing. You certainly saved some good money if were to contract a roofer.
Awesome! Just Subscribed and waiting to see your next video. Thanks
Thanks BRO! Nice work
Great vid
Great video--very helpful, thanks!
Thank you Scott, the video was helpful.
Great video, thanks!
Very helpful! Thanks!
"Drinking that day they made this house." LOL. I've seen that happen more than once. Thanks!
Man I got a 1950s house and it seems like they were drinking thru the whole build! I've been finding shitty craftsmanship everywhere. a lot of the studs aren't even 16 on center. its completely built with 2x3 instead of 2x4 which makes changing anything extremely difficult!
@@Lilmiket1000 same here! Q950s house with a bunch of crappy craftsmanship.
Older mobile homes (1985 or older) were definitely poorly made. Newer ones are usually manufactured by machines.
Same goes for cars built on Fridays. LoL!😉 🇺🇸
That's why eventually roof got leak in this exact spot. Drinkers left nail hole or so and over the years bad problem was made up.
when replacing OSB should always leave a small gap all around for possible expansion
gotta love those 1x1's I'm dealing with this ass ache as we speak. They use 2x6s for wall studs but those Fisher Price lookin 1x1s for roof trusses
Good DIY work.thank you

Thanxeversomuch, really helpful
Great video thanks for helping 👍
so informative step by step
Thank you body for that tip I have a leaky roof too and that helped
Love this..thank you
Good clear instruction. But as others point out, it seems a major flaw to not use waterproof felt or roofing paper. Also, unless the neighborhood is very poor, most homeowners would not want to repair a black roof with white shingles.
I saw that myself just from reading other posts and videos but I assume it's because 1. It was gonna be extra work and 2. Extra money when he was gonna redo the entire roof for metal anyways at least that's what I think. Otherwise good video
Leak vs. No leak, I'll take the latter regardless if color, petty problems, smh
Scott, THANK YOU! VERY informative.
Thank you for the video, really informative. But I got a question, how did you fix the ceiling in the closet?
he ran outta time going too fast , so now it gets done again , proper and they pay twice,,maybe. seal the seam ,drop the felt , oh and ya better follow the old nail holes perfectly with a head sealer, or ya gotta seal the emptied holes and go with sealer on any new ones.
8:37 OUCH! MY EYE!!!
great work!
Thank you Scott !!!
thank you for you time!
