I have watched 26 leaking roof repair videos. This was my favorite. It was simple and to the point and surprisingly informative for a 6 minute DIY video. Thank you.
This is by far the best roof repair "how to" video I've yet seen. There are so many people out there who know HOW to do a job, but have no clue how to TEACH another person to do it. Teaching skills are essential before anyone decides to make a UA-cam video. Well done! A+
One of the best videos on simple fixes. Most contractor videos tell you the problems by playing fears to get customers. This lady actually shows you how to fix the simple problems! Thumbed up and subscribed!
This is a great video, love the advice and an obvious expert. One note, I believe you want to do the nails above the tar strip so there is no possible water leak gap, can check on the install instructions of the shingles to confirm. This is true for the flashing around the vent as well, you want the nails under the shingles up the slope of the roof so as to not create a hole for water to get in, though since she's sealing it with roofing cement it's probably fine as long as the cement is rated to last as long as the rest of the flashing.
When you replaced the vent it confused me how water wouldn't get in the house the way the shingles were. Btw, I watched several of these videos with guys teaching who didn't teach half as well. Thank you for this. Made sure to Like it.
The shingle goes up quite a bit under that cap seal so it's actually over top of shingles as well, but yeah that space around the pipe is pretty big. seems they would have made the shingles closer to the pipe, also I don't like to see nails on the lower end of the boot seal because they will likely leak later on once the tar dries out.
@@BigAlWillis yessir. Always used to do that and caulk, but man is in nicer to jjst nail the flange under the higher courses of shingles. Also the rigid flange needed cause those damn floppy ones suck.
Thank you for the clear explanation and great video. I noticed from other comments I'm not the only one who had to search through more than a few videos to find one that was actually helpful!
Then you haven't watched any professional roofers (videos) make these type repairs. A diy person could still make them, as a professional roofer, not really that difficult with proper instruction. "Grand Roofing Inc." and "Veteran Construction" being YT channels that come to mind. Take care.
Placing a 2 x 4 against the fascia board to protect the shingles from a ladder----Thanks, I learned something today (10/14/23) Jack Nicholson, Richardson, TX
Thank you so much you explained everything very well, but i have been doing this for 7 years now and i will not critique, you seem to be very knowledgeable on many fields of work and i am impressed, but i specialize in doing repairs now and was wondering how many videos there where on the repair aspect, thank you for your time
Great video and I'm always glad to see girls working in the trades. I believe they do a great job. I'm in my mid 70's and when I ran my small group of construction services companies there were no girls in the trades back in the 60's and 70's. Great Job. Gramps
i saw that to.. she could have cut the shingles rounded out alil more on the parts that were hitting the vent soo it would slide up in there more.. way tomuch of the upper part of the vent exposed, it looked like it was only 2 inches under the shingles.
Thank you for this video, I have been ripped off by so many men and they have made more damage, now I know how to correct it myself thank you for empowering me.
Your the bomb! My fear is relieved. Found water coming through the bathroom vent tonight at 3 A.M. Complete panic set in. Had to crawl up in the attic to see what was going on. Definitely coming through the vent. Gonna tackle it tomorrow morning. I'm gonna sleep better now. Thank You!
Hi Teresa, this video is very good and very well explained.. the reason I found you was that I have a inside leak inside my wanigan and I live in Alaska and it has been raining cats and dogs... none stop and my cieling got super wet and it is now falling from the inside. Anyway have a great day, and we'll be looking for more vids..
I am in love! Not looking for a commitment or anything else really. Offering a great place to live and virtually unlimited home improvement projects. Seriously, awesome video. Thanks a bunch!
You'd be off my job if you nailed into a fascia board like that just for a ladder. No point in nailing into that drip edge either. If you have to nail, nail below drip edge and hit with some white caulk/silicone when done. Having said that, I know most people don't have a roofing ladder handy. From experience, unless you have some roofing experience from/with a roofer that knows his/her trade, I would just call a roofer. If you don't know what you're doing you can get up there and make things a lot worse than they are. But if you have the basics, you can and will save some money.
Roof Stapled ? Check all ! Polyurethane caulk tacks up faster. Seal tab area with it. Pipe and vent flashings? If sealant is needed. Most cases it was installed wrong. Both flashings will (after what she did) will leak. There's not enough coverage at the top on both. Also, her extension ladder wasn't extended safely, and I'd rather ding up a little piece of shingle than put two holes in the fascia.
Teresa Garrett have you replaced the roof / sidewall flashing? Roof is only 5yrs old, should not be leaking. Should we be able to loosen the shingles enough to replace flashing without damaging shingles? Any tips.. Thanks
If it doesn't leak and looks good it's good. There are a million ways to handle any one situation when roofing. The roof most likely doesn't have a warranty and most situations calling in a warranty is just a pain and you usually end up taking the loss anyways. Roofing is easy, dangerous, and hard all at the same time. Almost anyone can do it as long as they are willing and able to do so.
Welll….. not always easy. Depends on the roofs design, certain flashings needed, tricky penetrations, and the slope. Installing a course of shingles is easy realistically in terms of install method. But so many other things that come into play. Understanding the system as a whole, not just nailing shingles. There’s a shingler, then there’s a roofer. Quite a huge difference.
In the UK this is the kind of stuff we put on our garden shed, though no doubt with builders making houses cheaper it will only be a matter of time until this stuff is common house building practice in UK. Many thanks😀👌
Great video! Would be curious if you've ever tried to use a Perma-Boot for a pipe boot repair? I saw them in Home Depot the other day and was just curious.
time 4:16 as the nail were being nailed the shingle was bouncing around. Are you going to replace the other shingles around the pile. There also was a large half circle cut on the right shingle. I assume you cut it to remove the gasket. The other shingle should be replace d to do a more professional job.
My vent pipe seal boot was dry cracked and leaking in my home. my roof is much steeper than the one you fixed or i could have done my own repair . i could have stepped on the roof but never been able to get back on the latter 😕
Mines flat where I get on and off but still fairly high and my fear of heights is so bad it takes me a good 10/15 minutes of talking myself into it to get down! I usually hug the ladder, close my eyes and hope for the best! 😅been lucky so far! I’m a female btw lol

i liked the part where her extension ladder slides around on the section of 2x4, when she should have installed a ladder stabilizer instead.
But over simplifies, more to do

Was pretty informative, but nail below the tar line, but above the eye of the shingle.
The nail in the tar line can stop the tar from bonding.
And just remove a shingle or two above the plumbing stack, then replace the shingles to get a clean cut tight around the boot.
