    A) that was a stunning painting. And B) those tips were soo helpful! I am new to gold leaf and have never seen anyone cut it to size before. Great idea and using tweezers, first rate tip! I also loved the tip about saving the little bits, another really useful idea. Thank you for the video Mishi.

    Brilliant. Concisely explained and ably demonstrated. Re: tidying up specks of gold leaf afterwards, if medieval artists were illuminating manuscripts they always put the gold leaf on first, before adding any colour - at least, so I have read.

    For such a short video, I've learned a lot about gold leaf, so thank you so much for sharing it. No irritating waffle or background noise; talking for the sake of it rarely adds to learning a technique for me.

    hello Mishfit Art, great adivce, I love the idea using the sticky notes for burnishing and I'll be using that.. but I have a tip that works amazing for me is using wax paper ( not parchment paper) to pick up the gold leaf from the sleeves, it stays in place as well, especially for larger areas. ;)
    Thank you for your advise.
    Oh! have you ever tried to write on gold leaf? I want to add some scribing to the gold leafe area I did, but I cannot find someone who has tried it. Let me know if you have, I'd love to know what works - what doesnt type of thing.

    Is there such a thing as a spray size for the gold leaf application?
    When using something like a stencil with specific cut out shapes the size when painted onto the stencil (no matter how carefully) just bleeds underneath so I can't get the precise shape (non-geometric)...
    Any ideas how to do this or is there a spray size available?

      Hiya,
      If you are using genuine 24ct/23ct gold leaf, then it won't need varnishing.
      If it is low grade or faux gold leaf then it may need varnishing as it might tarnish over time..
      Any good acrylic clear spray varnish would be fine.
      But do a test first. and read this article to understand the possible need for a barrier layer before you varnish...

    • @kenthartland8581
      @kenthartland8581 8 місяців тому

      Use two-sided tape instead of glue (sizing). It puts a razor-sharp edge on the gold leaf. It''s a little thicker than sizing but since you will put 2-3 coats of clear over it, it will level out nicely.

    • @robwarner9371
      @robwarner9371 7 місяців тому

      If you’re covering a large area with artificial gold leaf, the nature of the leaf is such that edges are pretty much inevitable. Despite its flimsy nature, it doesn’t really tear easily when you’re trying to remove the excess leaf. If you’re covering a large area, I’d use flakes rather than sheets and work on small areas at a time. You won’t get a mirror finish, but you will get a uniform appearance, any edges become an integral part of the decor, and you’ll get a great shine. Just be sure not to touch the imitation leaf as it will tarnish over time due to the oils in your skin.
      The only way to minimise edges is to use genuine gold leaf with an oil-based gold size, but that’s a bit more expensive 😉

    I'm a beginner watercolor artist and I just purchased some gold leaf for some ideas I have. Thank you so much for the concise and informative video! Few questions though, do you need to use any sort of varnish to protect the gold leaf? If you do use it, how might it affect watercolor artwork? How similar is watercolor vs acrylic inks? What type of paper/gsm do you use for it?

    • @mishfitart1370
      @mishfitart1370  2 роки тому +2

      Hi, Glad you found the video useful.
      If you are using genuine 24ct/23ct gold leaf, then it won't need varnishing.
      If it is low grade or faux gold leaf then it may need varnishing as it might tarnish over time..
      Personally I wouldn't varnish a watercolour painting. Here's why...
      goldenhub.goldenpaints.com/storage/uploads/1398722721.pdf
      But if you want to, I would use an artist spray on varnish for acrylic. Windsor&newton, Liquitex, montanna, Golden, all sell these types of varnish.
      But always do a test first.
      Watercolor vs Acrylic inks: They are manufactured differently, but the experience of painting with them can be quite similar, (depending on how you like to paint)... I do a lot of wet on wet, and the expereince is similar with both of them. Just have fun and experiment.
      Paper: it's best to use a watercolour block. as each sheet is attached at all 4 edges, meaning the paper doesn't wrap when wet.
      But you can use a nice sheet of 300gsm + paper, stretch it and tape it down with gum tape. its a bit of a faff, which is why I now use a proper watercolour block on paper instead.
      Have fun! :)

    Thanks for the tips. Just have 2 questions? If you are using mod podge glue how long do you wait before applying the leaf? And if after you applied the leaf and taken the excess out with a brush you notice that there are bits in the gold leaf that came out too and are missing can you reapply glue there and place more bits of leaf to cover those spots?

    • @mishfitart1370
      @mishfitart1370  3 роки тому +6

      Hi, thanks for watching. I’ve not personally used Mod Podge Glue, and each product can behave differently. But the general rule is, to wait until the glue/size is “touch dry” but still has “tack/stickiness”. (Test this carefully as you don’t want to leave a fingerprint in the glue/size.) You don’t want any part of the glue to still be wet enough to bleed when you start burnishing. I’m currently using POLYVINE ACRYLIC METAL LEAF SIZE, and very happy with the results. If in doubt, do a few experiments first to find the optimum drying/tack time for the product you are using.
      In terms of fixing gaps in the gold, yes, you can go in a with a thin brush and paint over the gaps with the size and the re-apply the gold leaf to those areas, then brush back again. You can repeat these steps until you have fixed all the gaps..
      I hope that helps. Best of luck with your project and let me know how you get on :)

      @mishfitart1370  2 роки тому

      No, I would recommend using a proper "Gold Size" ( Size is another word for a special kind of glue) as it stays tacky for longer.
      It is similiar to PVA, but designed for the purpose of gold leafing. You can try PVA, but use it sparingly, and wait until it almost dry but still tacky before applying the gold leaf. When is doubt, do a few tests first...
