Thanks Julie. My husband is in the hospital with Covid 19 in Rome so art but has been the furthest from my mind until I watched your video on playing with bristle brushes, watercolors and ink. Thank you. You inspired me tonight. Needed sanity.
Hey Deborah! I just now saw your comment... thank you for your kind words. I am so sorry to hear your husband was ill. I hope that he has recovered and doing well. Hugs to you and your husband. Thank you for watching! Be well! 😘 Julie
My creativity seemed to have deserted me when Covid started last spring. Watching you today has been inspiring! I hear my muse calling my name. Thank you Julie!
I had bought a few 48 pan sets of Schmincke and the tube sets of D&S. I love the blends they make! You make it seem so effortless. But i learned illumination through Calligraphy and we use different mediums to make it stick. But your method is much cheaper than buying old school gesso.
A few things: I use Mona Lisa gold leaf and the instructions say to let the glue dry instead of applying the leaf in wet glue. Next you would be real sorry if you use a blow dryer with it because the leaf is so light weight it will go everywhere. Next it is a total waste to brush it off into a trashcan. Treat it like glitter and drop all the particles into a small jar. You can use those little pieces over and over again in future projects.
Turned out just Beautiful ✨ Loved the way you described the process and your view on just letting things happen organically..So agree! Let it just flow.. Thanks for sharing!
It would be really nice if a suggested materials needed and where to get them list was provided/ with the reminder that artists often work with what they have on hand, after all they tend to be creative souls.
Hey Sajid... I have stopped doing that because so many varnishes I have tried have caused the gold leaf to turn Amber and foggy. Not good. ☹️. Thanks for watching and thanks for your question! ☺️ Julie
I save the leftovers in a plastic baggy. Julie, you do not mention finishing off with a sealer, which one has to do so the foil does not get damaged by oxidation. That is what brought me to your site, looking for the Mona Lisa Speedball sealer.
Gorgeous! Do you know what colors that you used at the start of this tutorial? I wen back and watched again to see if you mentioned it and didn’t hear it. Later you used the lunar blue and you mentioned that you were mostly using American journey an I really like those first colors!! Thank so much!!💕
Stacy Jens Hey Stacy! Yeah... the one sample piece at the beginning with the red abstract flowers is from another video that I do with our own Amanda! She has taught me sooo much about using gold leaf! You should check out our demo video together! ArtSpeak with Amanda! All of that gold background was done with this Mona Lisa Gold Leaf! Thanks for your question and thanks for watching! 😊 Julie
I’ve always wondered how that works! Would it be ok to use a little less of the gold leaf? I would hate to waste any. Yours turned out beautiful! More of these tutorials please.
What pen is that that you used for the gold line work? Love the ease of use! Beautiful creation and helpful tips for gold leafing! TFS the inspiration!
Hi Julie ... I love the free-flowing art you create 🌺. Have a question about Fine-Tec. I saved and saved and purchased Coliro’s entire collection recently, all 62 colors. They are 🥰gorgeous🥰. My question is, Coliro’s website says that they do not produce Fine-Tec and that their product is always in the round format. I have some Fine-Tec (in the square format) as well and they perform the same. Would you have any inside knowledge about this? Just curious ... thanks so much.
Pink Flamingo Hey Pink! I don’t have any secret info about Coliro. But, I have found in working in the art industry for years that it is surprisingly small... and if they are publicly saying that they don’t produce material for FineTec, that’s probably true. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching! 👍🏻😊 Julie
That was great Julie! I always enjoy the way you demonstrate your techniques. What is the name of the gold pen you used at the end to draw the lines after the gold leaf? Look forward to watching you create your next masterpiece! Thanks....
FYI: Arches paper is not pronounced Arsh-the way you’re saying it. The correct pronunciation is AR-chez ; as in the plural of arch. (It’s not a French word).
Pronounced the name of the paper 'Arsh', it's pronounced Arch-ez, that's why it's spelt with es'. Just saying, because I've got nothing better to do this morning.
Shame on you for thinking it is ok to waste the Gold leaf like that. Not everyone can afford to just throw it away. There were some big pieces too. I would LOVE to have had your "waste" especially since you obviously don't care because you have it when you want it.
DIEGO SANCHEZ Hey Diego... I understand what you are saying... for the purposes of this video it would be hard time wise to conserve a bunch. I do use a gold pen often... even in this piece... but it’s the sheen, the mirror or it that provides an interesting contrast and texture it you want it!
What a waste of "2 minutes"...Julie may like the "organic shapes" and "hit and miss" results, but many do not have an abundant budget to "waste gold leaf". Shesh!
It’s Fabulous…Julie❤!! You are such sunshine everyday teaching!

We hope he is better now.
My creativity seemed to have deserted me when Covid started last spring. Watching you today has been inspiring! I hear my muse calling my name. Thank you Julie!
When I use metal leaf in my art I brush it off into a container for future use.
I agree. It makes me cringe to waste it. 🤭

Stunning! Thank you. I would like to see a close-up at the end- it was whisked away so quickly I didn’t get to see the finished product!
Wow, I absolutely love that. Always wondered how to use the gold leaf, now I know. Thank you so much for the wonderful demo.

Love your videos. So glad I kept my gold leaf I used on my decoupage boxes. Brenda Sydney Australia
This effect is beautiful.
This is perfect for a beautiful card.
Gold foil demo starts at around 11:50.
Love your attitude of not knowing surendering to flow your soul that is
How exciting this looks. I cannot wait to try.
This is beautiful Julie!
I love it....I definitely want to play with some gold leaf now 😍
Turned out just Beautiful ✨ Loved the way you described the process and your view on just letting things happen organically..So agree! Let it just flow.. Thanks for sharing!
I just love your videos and your great personality!

Julie -- I LOVE your videos - great technique and a great personality is the best!!!!
Love this! Thanks so much, Julie.
Does this need varnishing afterwards? Because I heard somewhere gold leaf gets tarnished after some time
Hey Sajid... I have stopped doing that because so many varnishes I have tried have caused the gold leaf to turn Amber and foggy. Not good. ☹️. Thanks for watching and thanks for your question! ☺️ Julie
hermoso trabajo... gracias por la demostración,,,
What type of pen is being used for the line work, please? Is that gold ink or paint? Thank you. I love your work Julie..... : )
Love this piece. Thank you Julie.
So enjoy watching you💖
It seems that you don’t seal the gold leaf after you have applied it. Is it necessary to do that?
I save the leftovers in a plastic baggy. Julie, you do not mention finishing off with a sealer, which one has to do so the foil does not get damaged by oxidation. That is what brought me to your site, looking for the Mona Lisa Speedball sealer.
Excellent! Thank you!
Gorgeous!👍🏻😊
Love it❤️,Greetings from Costa Rica
have you ever considered brushing your excess gold leafing into a container to use the flakes at another time? Just a thought....
Gorgeous! Do you know what colors that you used at the start of this tutorial? I wen back and watched again to see if you mentioned it and didn’t hear it. Later you used the lunar blue and you mentioned that you were mostly using American journey an I really like those first colors!! Thank so much!!💕
Gorgeous! Love it :)
Julie it reminds me of a river seen. With tree covered banks on either side.
Can you save some of the larger pieces of gold that fall off to re-use?
In the abstract...Golden Gate bridge! :)
Fantastic!
I love these tips with Julie. I think she is as cute as a button and that gorgeous hair of hers makes me so jealous. Thanks.
In one of your pictures you had a huge section behind some flowers.. how did you do that? Surely it wasn’t done with the glue pen.
Stacy Jens Hey Stacy! Yeah... the one sample piece at the beginning with the red abstract flowers is from another video that I do with our own Amanda! Fun! Thank you
I love this! What is the first blue color you used, I just love it!
D W Hello DW! That first color I used was American Journey Blue Stone... I love it! It’s magical! Thanks for you question and for watching! 😊 Julie
description lists colors
does this brand need to be sealed so it doesn't tarnish and if so how do you do that on a watercolor painting? Would the glass of a frame protect it?
It does need to be sealed. Speedball brand has a sealer for gold leaf.
Love it!
Hi, After finishing the paint and applying the leaf, can I use dorland´s wax to seal and preserve my painting?
Gorgeous! What type of gold pen did you use at the end of the process?
Hey Cindy... Unibal Signo gel pen! It’s great, you will love them! Thanks for your question and for watching! 😊 Julie
I’ve always wondered how that works! Would it be ok to use a little less of the gold leaf? I would hate to waste any. Yours turned out beautiful! More of these tutorials please.
What was at the pen you used to sign the piece?
love it 😊
Beautiful. What was the gold pen? Really love the blues.
What pen is that that you used for the gold line work? Love the ease of use! Beautiful creation and helpful tips for gold leafing! TFS the inspiration!
That’s my question also. I hope they answer.
thanks! What kind of pen do you use at the end?
Just a suggestion. Move the pallet closer to the paper.
Can you use Mog Pog?

Stephanie Hey Stephanie! It’s a UniBall Signo gel pen! I really love the dependable line quality and coverage! Thanks for your question...😊 Julie
won't it tarnish?
I thought this was for gold leafing on an oil painting
Seems awfully wasteful...why not save the shards for further use?!
❤️
But I will lay down.

A huge amount or metal leaf waste. Why not simply use a gold pen?

Really like what you're saying while you're painting. Do you have advice for gilding over an oil painting?
Awesome
