Do they have silver leaf to make a moon is what I'm thinking? This has got me thinking for my next art project. I never thought about it, but now I want to try it.
That’s a nice tutorial for gold foil which behaves slightly different from Gold leaf. Another thing would be, With gold leaf you would definitely not waste any with this carefree application and the proper drying of adhesive is a must! One tip for knowing when the adhesive is ready for application, whether using metal sheeting or actual gold leaf is to notice when the adhesive is invisible.
FANTASTIC artist! I have had a drawing ready to gold leaf for about 4 years and have had gold leaf in my posession for almost a decde!!! After watching you demo this, I feel confident to do finish my 4 year old drawing and to do many more. I'll be 73 this month and doing gold leaf will be a present to myself! Thanks for the lovely video. YES, I 'LIKED' AND 'SUBSCRIBED' .
I used your technique for my first every gold project and it worked perfectly! Thank you for the tips on trouble-shooting. I know this video is 5 years old, but it was the best one I found. Thank you!
Most youtube posters would have shortened this video, but by taking your time, and showing us your "mistakes", you posting is incredibly instructional and useful. Beautiful work, guy!
First of all, the drawing is AMAZING!!! The golden leaf fits it perfectly and i can't think of anything but how huge your talent is. Keep it up, much love!
You had me at turning the bottle as you finish pouring. I have never seen anyone do that as well, and it drives my OCD nuts! So good. Thank you. 🙏🏻 You are a wonderful artist.
the only video that helped me alot . most gold leafing videos i saw only show the part where they take out the tape or brush out the leaf. not much about applying adhesive. thanks for this 😊
Oh man, that does my heart good to see beautiful art being made. I'm old, have arthritis so don't do much art anymore, so I live vicariously through artists on UA-cam. Thank you for that! She's gorgeous!
I work in an estate/consignment art shop and I always thought the red poking through the gold leafing was an indicator of it being a cheap frame. The more you know!
The underlying red might be from the water gilding technique. It’s more traditional and harder to do. If it is water gilded, it’s the sign of a master’s work
What a fantastic tutorial!! I'm so glad I came across it! Now I'm going to use this rather than the 'liquid gold leaf' paint I was going to use. I wish you would have listed links for the adhesive and brushes you used, as this is all new to me.
Thanks for this video. Long time oil painter and have never tried gold leaf. After watching a few videos where they were using sheets I wasn't to thrilled with the effect when finished. Your technique however makes it so much more appealing. Thanks again.

The gold leaf used by the 'masters' and iconographers was much thicker than the uniform machined foil available today, as it was traditionally gold laboriously hammered flat by hand. Medieval English 'Rosenoble' coins first issued in 1344 were considered the best quality, standard and controlled weight of gold to use, hence the finest quality of gilding gold is still known as Rosenoble . Excellent demo 👌 👏 for someone like me who is working on a piece that all of a sudden I realized is calling out for gold leaf! Excellent tutorial! Thank you! ....
Good job young man. It's harder than it looks.👍 the best thing is that you did your homework and learned the glue marries the gold glue when it's 'tacky' and the foil is at the same temperature as the air that's basically floating.
I recieved this video in my recommendation and I'm glad I took the time to watch it, I learned from it. I got so involved in watching your video (embarrassed) I blew on my phone to help rid the unused gold flakes during the removal with tape😅😳
I know this is weird but I really liked it before you went and patched in the lifted areas, the texture the first imperfect layer created made it look like the moon
Thank you for this nice and simple tutorial. Gold leafing seemed so scary to me before. Now that i know i can always fix it if i mess up it makes me feel more confident about making art with it

I use aa very soft fluffy round brush to "burnish" the surface of the gold when working with gold leaf. The way of the old Masters.
that works with gold foil, REAL gold leaf needs an agate to burnish

Will any glue work and or can you put it on wet paint to stick if you're wanting it to lend itself to the abstract qualities of the painting?
I mean I've never tried but i know this glue works very well as it's very thin and doesn't build up so it's easy to apply the gold on top!
