A lot's happened this past year.
But it's more important than ever to remember our heroes. And Neil Peart's brilliant contributions to the drumming world (and music) inspired generations of drummers to pick up sticks for the first time.
So join us today -- on the 1 year anniversary of Neil's passing -- and revisit five of his most iconic drum licks. Even if you don't have a massive kit like Neil Peart, you can still learn his parts -- you just might need to get creative with where you place the hits.
Ash Pearson takes you through some of his favorite Neil Peart licks and shows you how to play each of them (notation included).
1. 0:31 - "Tom Sawyer"
This is the break in the middle of the song, and it's one of the most epic drum fills of all time. It's fun to air drum, and it's even more fun to play on an actual drum set!
2. 02:45 - "The Spirit Of Radio"
Be prepared for lots of syncopation in this one.
3. 05:29 - Neil Peart Signature Beat
You can find this beat throughout Rush's catalog, from "The Spirit Of Radio" to "La Villa Strangiato". This fun, afro-cuban-inspired lick has become synonymous with Peart and has found its way into many other drummers' repertoire.
4. 08:31 - "By-Tor And The Snow Dog"
There's so much epic tom stuff in this track (from Neil's first record with the band). It mostly consists of single strokes and moving to the toms with the right hand.
5. 12:52 - "Natural Science"
Peart does a lot of variations on this groove section in 7/8.

This video wasn't supposed to have ads but there's a clip from a popular song featured in the video and the publisher automatically monetized it. We were very intentionally trying NOT to monetize a video dedicated to Neil on the anniversary of his passing and are working to clear it up. Thanks for your understanding 🙏
UPDATE: That section has been muted, and you shouldn't be seeing any ads anymore. Thanks again!
Neil was and is my hero. I really do appreciate your virtue on this issue and HATE THE GREED OF CAPITALIST ASSHOLES! Hey publisher, show some damn respect!
Yes we understand there are some thing that its hard to do . Wonderfull video dont worry to much!! You had made something beautifull for him.
I still had 2 double ads
I still saw some ads
@Hot Damn www.drumeo.com/getting-started/
This guy absolutely nailed this lesson - drum sound is on point too! Cymbals, plays with such conviction, love the love for Neil and the songs!
This guy is a fn great drummer. anyone who can nail Neil Peart's drumming is amazing in my eyes.
That By-tor section has always blown my mind!
Blew my socks right off ,right across the room , vapour trails .
By -tor is one of my favorite fills.
Miss him still. Your did him justice! Thank you!
The footage of Neil performing "Tom Sawyer" was filmed in Saratoga Springs on July 23, 2010. It was the third and final Rush performance I ever saw, and still holds up as the best show by any band I've ever seen. Neil is a legend among legends.
Thank-you for paying tribute to “The Professor” Ash. I’ve been listening to and air drumming to Rush since 1977. R.I.P. Neil. The Drumming World misses you.
Love this dude RIP NEIL 😔❤️❤️
RIP Neil 🥁
Seeing it transcribed, I realized that Tom Sawyer fill was even crazier than I though. Amazing. And great playing!!
Edit: this is the greatest thing. RIP The Professor. Thank you so much for sharing! Love the infectious respect for Neil!!
I LOVED this video. You can tell his love for Rush and Neil by the look on his face. Really inspiring and educational video.
After watching this video, i realized how genius Neil really was. His drum fills absolutely kicked ass and this guy totally kept up, great job to both drummers, R.I.P neil.
That signature beat is in natural science, yyz, spirit of radio, la villa strangiato, red barchetta, and subdivisions just to name a few
Dont forget animate, phenomenal beat
@@indobassgear2087 haven't heard it yet im only on signals what album is it on?
Been trying so hard to get that down. Feel like so much opens up for you in that catalog once that happens.
@@cvn6555 that's exactly what happened to me once I learned it and i just learned it by ear which is easiest for me cause im terrible at sight reading
@@isopropyltoxicity Nice. I struggle trying to learn by ear. I get close but probably not as close as I think!
Very nice lesson. As a Rush tribute drummer, I have to constantly go over these points and this helps a lot. Long live Rush! R.I.P. Neil!
Man can't believe a year has passed 😭
So many great songs and drum parts from this man, I hope there will be more lessons like this. Thank you Neil Peart for all of your drumming contributions! Rest In Power!
One of my favourite Neil moments is the variations in the 13/8 section in Jacobs ladder.
You have ridiculously good sounding toms, by the way !
It shows through Neil Peart's riffs the fun time he had while creating them. I feel like they almost have a "child-like" flair to them, AND are technically advanced at the same time.
Amazing stuff, thanks Ash and Drumeo for the lesson!
Totally agree. There is that uninhibited creativity in all his parts! Thanks a lot for checking the video out :D
That is such a great point. There are times when I giggle with glee when hearing these fills. They're insane!
Your playing is Incredible your love of the drums shows!!
Neil has always been at the Absolute top of my drumming list!! Thanks for keeping his memory alive!!
I still find myself shedding a tear when I see the love people had for him..
He was 1 of a kind!!
Neil got me playing drums and will always be an inspiration. I am still amazed at the awesome sound these three guy ,just three, put out for over 40 years!!!!!!
Can't believe it has been a year. Amazing everything that 2020 took away from us. Thank you for this video. Started taking lessons three years ago at 49. Never had the time or money and Neil was a big reason why I always wanted to give it a try.
Rush is my all-time favorite band. You do Neil some serious justice. Your drums are SPOT ON for the 70s Rush drum sound. Thank you for everything about this phenomenal video!
Fantastic job and a great tribute to The Professor.
#NeilPeart R.I.P always to the best ever drummer .Thank you for sharing.#AshPearson
Striking those toms like the Professor did. Beautiful!
IMMEDIATE "like" for the rant about how to pronounce "Peart" correctly! 👍
I'd love to know how long that went on for.
@@liamfitzgerald7217 Longer than Hemispheres, probably! 😂
RIP Neil, you're my drum hero when I was on my high school years til today. Hope you still rocking on with good guys out there. Love you so much, Sir Neil, and Thank you for sharing his legendary licks, Drumeo.
🙏
Fark BRO!
Top Notch lesson!
Way to break down all Neil's fills!
I wish I grew up now instead of in the 70's and 80's, as we had absolutely NO teaching methods to learn new songs and the fills that are in those songs. We had to literally spend hours listening to records or tapes, slowing them down and trying to decipher the fills on our own!
Although I have not played since I was 18 years old, I still miss playing to this day, now 54 years old.
You rock brother!
007
Now the rest of my day is going to suck because this was awesome.
We're sorry / You're welcome
@@DrumeoOfficial you are forgiven. I will listen to any drummer that is better than me. Bonham, Peart, Lombardo, Vinny Paul all day. Thank you.
the amazing thing about Neil is how effortless and calm he plays while this guy is rigid and totally pushing his drumming (just like me when trying to play Rush). great lesson, though!
It is called playing with passion 😉
@@freegee3503 with no musicality at all.
Ya, because Neil not only wrote the part, but played it for 40 years! Ash Pearson crushed these parts and this lesson. No one will play that part like Neil Peart did! Think of the drums like a person's voice, no two people are going to sound exactly alike and the same is true on the drums.
A true genius and legend, crazy it’s been a year since he passed. I like this guy, great playing and teaching. No transcription for Tom Sawyer?
Thanks for this, Ash PEARTson! The kit sounds KILLER btw
Thanks for walking through these. Your enthusiasm and breakdowns were excellent.
A year already :(
Here's to one of the greatest!
I always thought it was said like “Pert” and shook my head at anyone who said “Peert.” Then one day I found a video of him doing a drum lesson and the man himself pronounced it “Peert” and I felt like the worst fan in the world hahaha. RIP Neil Peart, the drumming world is not the same without you.
This man has been brought to the light! PEART
I wouldn't sweat it too much. Taylor Hawkins called him "Pert" when Rush was at their Hall of Fame induction.
My Favourite Drumer Neil Peart!
I also loves his playing for the Rush. He is one of the legendary Drummer in the World.
That you so much for this! You’re obviously a tremendously talented player and you do great justice to the music and the man / men behind it.
Simply an excellent lesson, Neil made is look so simple, and you showed us it is not at all simple. Cheers!
This will be one of Drumeo's best videos.
Thank you 🙏
Wonderful video of how the maestro worked, loved it! As you see nothing was a no brainer, heart and soul and some serious brain work into every beat.
I’ve literally been looking for a video for so long on how to play the By Tor and The Snow Dog fills 😭😭 thank y’all so much, y’all are seriously the best drum channel out there, been subscribed for awhile. Neil is the reason I picked up sticks and I actually did a tribute drum solo to him at one of my bands show before covid really hit hard. RIP to the professor. Thank y’all for this insightful video and for this wonderful tribute to Neil. ❤️🎵🥁
Awesome stuff - really great breakdowns of these incredible beats #ripneil The Greatest
After Neil died, the world broke, and it hasn't recovered since.
Oh shut up whatever
Gotta admit ... you are correct.
In Modern Living Room Everyone Using "SoundProof Curtains" That Stops Outside Noise by 80% (25 Db) Tested. Check Here: livesoundproof.com/best-soundproof-curtains/
It was a huge loss barely spoken about.
Not exactly.....
The Professor is so engrained into music lore, that whenever I play my "big" setup (6 toms, kick, 2 snares, 5 crashes, hats, ride) non-drummers and even non-musicians ask me if it's my Neil Peart kit. I think I'll marathon some albums tonight
Amazing job, just, wow! I gotta go listen to some Rush, at blistering volume.
Fantastic! A great insight into some of the Professor's work! Thank you. 🙏
LOL "Rush Police" Love it. Also love that you had the guts to do this. What a joy to watch these parts broken down. Thank you!!!
Awesome tribute and miss Neil
Awesome, thanks for explaining the magic in Neil Peart's playing. 👍
when i was 12 years old,i delivered the Toronto sun to Getty Lee down the Toronto beaches. Never got to see him was paid by his house keeper always nice tip. You sometimes hear these jamming this was around winter of 1975. Thanks very well done!
wow - great stuff - it is amazing how much he orchestrated and designed - he was a crafter ....genius
Thank you
Nice one Ash! A great tribute to Neil! Also, a great expose into The Professor's Rudiments behind those legendary licks and fills of all time with Rush, thank you! Stirling job dude!
Thanks for the speech about gettin his name right! 😂 always have loved rush and peart will always be my favorite drummer/percussion. He was an absolute beast!!!
Great drumming. Great sounding drums, also great Rush T- shirts. This is the best Neil Peart instructional video clip I ever seen. This guy was such a joy to watch. Reminded me of my teenage years when I would skip school to RUSH home to my basement to learn RUSH songs...
Spectacular job!!
RIP Neil Peart
The opening to "Anthem" is another gem. But then again... aren't they all? :)
Not his signature on front of the shirt; is the “grace under pressure” logo
Yep! P/G
Remember that logo floating above the stage done with lasers on that tour.
Thought the same thing. His signature is actually on the back left shoulder circle.
@@frenziedfortressdrums That’s correct , 3 circles on the back: Neil’s signtr, Sabían logo and the “paragon” diamond
got mine (shirt) when i bought my 2nd paragon ride
Bro he’s the best the way he plays is insane wish you all blesing
Neil peart was the genius of all drummers
Great man, Neil was my inspiration for starting to play. I'd also love you to do loads more of this stuff. In the song Witch Hunt I think he's parodying himself cause he does the most monumental run round the toms, the biggest he ever did! Great drummer and I have to say you did him proud !
We'll have more lessons on Neil, for sure. Thanks for your comment -- I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Such a great "tom" song. The run on the lower ones is my favorite.
I had already like this (probably 3 years ago) but here I am watching it again. My last comment is probably down around 100, but I'll say this now.....Ash, you absolutely NAILED this buddy! 🥁
This is outstanding. Excellent work.
Wow, great performances Ash, thanks so much! 👍 I love the sound of this TAMA Drum Set! 😁
AWESOME video! I need like 10 years of practice to play these chops!! Ride and rock in peace, Professor
Well done Sir...so crisp and clean with spot on drum tuning! Love the Tamas.
Awesome! Thanks for the great vídeo!
Love the beginning! Great playing!! Our Friends in The US of A predominantly pronounce his name wrong.....not exclusively, but I have never heard one say it correctly, however, they are some of the best fans of RUSH so all good...
This is fabulous. THANK YOU.
Excellent!!!
Great video, can't believe it's a year already. One small point, that wasn't his signature on the R40 shirt, it was a logo from Grace Under Pressure. Loved the video (and the rant!) RIP NEP.
We will duly inform Ash 😂
And the top one is Roll The Bones, not A Farewell To Kings
Great video, great sound on drums, very professional with the score thrown in too. Thanks.
Greaaaaat program! Tank you for share your 5 favourite fills. I enjoed it a lot. Regards from Mexico City
Those toms sound amazing!!!
They do! Proper clear heads on TAMA drums!
Man I wish this had come out about half a year ago, I had to cover Spirit of Radio in a band and had to learn that intro by ear and by what little I could gather from watching him play it live. I got it, but having this breakdown would’ve helped immensely. At least now I can know for sure how to play it right.
What a beast Neil was. 🪦 RIP. You change T-shirts’ after 1 break Neil does 3 hour concerts with a mildly wet head band. Love the shirts and effort on this!! 💕
did all the best licks! this guy nailed it
Rush! Was pure and clean. Thanks for doing this video. NEIL was a Great Professor on the Drum Kit.
His drumming was on a superior level that will never be reached ...
That last fill in Natural Science with the splash towards the end I've always loved....well played brother....Neil would be proud
Glad you brought up the Bi-tor and the snow dog solo! Favorite Rush song!
Simply amazing.
All of these are amazing, Of course. Not a Rush track but I particularly like what he did on “Instamatic” by vertical horizon.... prime example of how with his astonishing talent turned an ok song into a cool song.
Wow, that is soooooo freakin impressive, that you can even come close to Neil's ability! Respect
Great stuff man! My personal is the ending to Subdivisions. He’s just great on everything.
this was super fun to watch, rip neil.. the true goat
He may not necessarily be my favorite or biggest influence, but he was one of the many drumming giants to walk this earth and he is certainly missed
Great instructional, the Professor would approve! Neil was a master of inserting razor-sharp hertas into his fills in different combinations, and also throwing in some 7-stroke rolls (played as single strokes) which sound similar to hertas with their triplet feel. Like "Fly By Night" at 2:32 coming out of the quiet bridge section -- the fill down the toms with 2 7-stroke rolls in the middle. My favorite fill of his is in La Villa Strangiato at 6:41-- lightning fast singles (that sound like doubles) on the snare with syncopated tom hits thrown in as well as a couple hi hat barks that were so prevalent in his early playing.
Great video. I’m not a drummer but I enjoyed the breakdown. The thing about Neil is that he hit the drums so hard - that was what he thought made Tom Sawyer so hard - the force and precision he was using.
Wow. Just wow. Very nice!
Really great, thanks a lot!
Great video and VERY helpful - do another 5!
Great lesson!
I love these typa videos , need to see the same typa thing for different drums! Would love to see a Phil Collins one!
I'll see what we can do - great suggestion!
Good job Ash, and thanks. Nice sounding kit.
Excelent lesson! Rip Neil
Even playing Tama too! Neil's best sounding recorded kit in the 80's!
Reinhard Luntungan I always thought he sounded great on the Ludwigs too.
Yes agreed!
When I heard that Neil was gone I felt a shadow cross my heart. RIP Professor!!
Counting through that Spirit intro while singing the melody is an insane thing to do. Great breakdown and playing, bud. 🖤
Great job learning the Niel fills. I'm still a BELIEVER in the body drumming and the less is more approach. I loved Neil's playing, and I've seen him live 2x, but it's hard to match a simple beat played well that swings. Like Steve Gadd or Ringo. TY S.R.PURDY 🥁🎶🎵
This is THE MOST AWESOME job to have!!! No nasty letters from me.
I like how you talk to us as how difficult it really is and how you break these fills. Please do more, oh I like the shirts 🤘
