Neil was and is my hero. I really do appreciate your virtue on this issue and HATE THE GREED OF CAPITALIST ASSHOLES! Hey publisher, show some damn respect!
Thank-you for paying tribute to “The Professor” Ash. I’ve been listening to and air drumming to Rush since 1977. R.I.P. Neil. The Drumming World misses you.
Fark BRO! Top Notch lesson! Way to break down all Neil's fills! I wish I grew up now instead of in the 70's and 80's, as we had absolutely NO teaching methods to learn new songs and the fills that are in those songs. We had to literally spend hours listening to records or tapes, slowing them down and trying to decipher the fills on our own! Although I have not played since I was 18 years old, I still miss playing to this day, now 54 years old. You rock brother! 007
After watching this video, i realized how genius Neil really was. His drum fills absolutely kicked ass and this guy totally kept up, great job to both drummers, R.I.P neil.
Seeing it transcribed, I realized that Tom Sawyer fill was even crazier than I though. Amazing. And great playing!! Edit: this is the greatest thing. RIP The Professor. Thank you so much for sharing! Love the infectious respect for Neil!!
The footage of Neil performing "Tom Sawyer" was filmed in Saratoga Springs on July 23, 2010. It was the third and final Rush performance I ever saw, and still holds up as the best show by any band I've ever seen. Neil is a legend among legends.
Rush is my all-time favorite band. You do Neil some serious justice. Your drums are SPOT ON for the 70s Rush drum sound. Thank you for everything about this phenomenal video!
RIP Neil, you're my drum hero when I was on my high school years til today. Hope you still rocking on with good guys out there. Love you so much, Sir Neil, and Thank you for sharing his legendary licks, Drumeo.
It shows through Neil Peart's riffs the fun time he had while creating them. I feel like they almost have a "child-like" flair to them, AND are technically advanced at the same time. Amazing stuff, thanks Ash and Drumeo for the lesson!
Can't believe it has been a year. Amazing everything that 2020 took away from us. Thank you for this video. Started taking lessons three years ago at 49. Never had the time or money and Neil was a big reason why I always wanted to give it a try.
Thanks for the speech about gettin his name right! 😂 always have loved rush and peart will always be my favorite drummer/percussion. He was an absolute beast!!!
I had already like this (probably 3 years ago) but here I am watching it again. My last comment is probably down around 100, but I'll say this now.....Ash, you absolutely NAILED this buddy! 🥁
when i was 12 years old,i delivered the Toronto sun to Getty Lee down the Toronto beaches. Never got to see him was paid by his house keeper always nice tip. You sometimes hear these jamming this was around winter of 1975. Thanks very well done!
Doooood, you've absolutely got "it". And I do mean "it". You could easily be touring with anyone... glad you chose to have a life and share your gift with struggling drummers. First picked a pair of sticks up at age 5... in 1972! Neil was always my unicorn.
Neil got me playing drums and will always be an inspiration. I am still amazed at the awesome sound these three guy ,just three, put out for over 40 years!!!!!!
who on earth could give this a thumbs down!! As I am typing this I see 59 thumb downs, WTF!? Drumeo, You are fantastic! Thank you for this, I am 51, I so wish we had this when I was 17, well, we do now! Thank you very much..
So many great songs and drum parts from this man, I hope there will be more lessons like this. Thank you Neil Peart for all of your drumming contributions! Rest In Power!
Great drumming. Great sounding drums, also great Rush T- shirts. This is the best Neil Peart instructional video clip I ever seen. This guy was such a joy to watch. Reminded me of my teenage years when I would skip school to RUSH home to my basement to learn RUSH songs... Spectacular job!!
Great instructional, the Professor would approve! Neil was a master of inserting razor-sharp hertas into his fills in different combinations, and also throwing in some 7-stroke rolls (played as single strokes) which sound similar to hertas with their triplet feel. Like "Fly By Night" at 2:32 coming out of the quiet bridge section -- the fill down the toms with 2 7-stroke rolls in the middle. My favorite fill of his is in La Villa Strangiato at 6:41-- lightning fast singles (that sound like doubles) on the snare with syncopated tom hits thrown in as well as a couple hi hat barks that were so prevalent in his early playing.
Love the beginning! Great playing!! Our Friends in The US of A predominantly pronounce his name wrong.....not exclusively, but I have never heard one say it correctly, however, they are some of the best fans of RUSH so all good...
Great video. I’m not a drummer but I enjoyed the breakdown. The thing about Neil is that he hit the drums so hard - that was what he thought made Tom Sawyer so hard - the force and precision he was using.
the amazing thing about Neil is how effortless and calm he plays while this guy is rigid and totally pushing his drumming (just like me when trying to play Rush). great lesson, though!
Ya, because Neil not only wrote the part, but played it for 40 years! Ash Pearson crushed these parts and this lesson. No one will play that part like Neil Peart did! Think of the drums like a person's voice, no two people are going to sound exactly alike and the same is true on the drums.

I’ve literally been looking for a video for so long on how to play the By Tor and The Snow Dog fills 😭😭 thank y’all so much, y’all are seriously the best drum channel out there, been subscribed for awhile. Neil is the reason I picked up sticks and I actually did a tribute drum solo to him at one of my bands show before covid really hit hard. RIP to the professor. Thank y’all for this insightful video and for this wonderful tribute to Neil. ❤️🎵🥁
Great video, can't believe it's a year already. One small point, that wasn't his signature on the R40 shirt, it was a logo from Grace Under Pressure. Loved the video (and the rant!) RIP NEP.
First off, really good transcribing of these parts and playing was solid! A dumb nitpicky thing only because Neil is my hero: At 5:17 when you pointed to your shirt and said that it was Neil's signature, that's Grace Under Pressure back sleeve logo and was on various tour merch for that tour as well. Other than that, great job honoring the best drummer of all time in my opinion!
Great job learning the Niel fills. I'm still a BELIEVER in the body drumming and the less is more approach. I loved Neil's playing, and I've seen him live 2x, but it's hard to match a simple beat played well that swings. Like Steve Gadd or Ringo. TY S.R.PURDY 🥁🎶🎵
Great man, Neil was my inspiration for starting to play. I'd also love you to do loads more of this stuff. In the song Witch Hunt I think he's parodying himself cause he does the most monumental run round the toms, the biggest he ever did! Great drummer and I have to say you did him proud !
This is the first Neil Peart demo I've seen that actually sounds like Neil Peart. You've caught his elusive inflections and syncopations and tone perfectly
What a beast Neil was. 🪦 RIP. You change T-shirts’ after 1 break Neil does 3 hour concerts with a mildly wet head band. Love the shirts and effort on this!! 💕
All of these are amazing, Of course. Not a Rush track but I particularly like what he did on “Instamatic” by vertical horizon.... prime example of how with his astonishing talent turned an ok song into a cool song.
I don't play drums (but have always wanted to)... and I still really enjoyed this "lesson," since I'm a big Rush / Peart fan. Thanks! I could listen to that signature beat on continuous loop! Well done!
Nice one Ash! A great tribute to Neil! Also, a great expose into The Professor's Rudiments behind those legendary licks and fills of all time with Rush, thank you! Stirling job dude!
The Professor is so engrained into music lore, that whenever I play my "big" setup (6 toms, kick, 2 snares, 5 crashes, hats, ride) non-drummers and even non-musicians ask me if it's my Neil Peart kit. I think I'll marathon some albums tonight
Man I wish this had come out about half a year ago, I had to cover Spirit of Radio in a band and had to learn that intro by ear and by what little I could gather from watching him play it live. I got it, but having this breakdown would’ve helped immensely. At least now I can know for sure how to play it right.

This guy absolutely nailed this lesson - drum sound is on point too! Cymbals, plays with such conviction, love the love for Neil and the songs!
That By-tor section has always blown my mind!
Blew my socks right off ,right across the room , vapour trails .
By -tor is one of my favorite fills.

RIP Neil 🥁
One of my favourite Neil moments is the variations in the 13/8 section in Jacobs ladder.
You have ridiculously good sounding toms, by the way !
Striking those toms like the Professor did. Beautiful!

A true genius and legend, crazy it’s been a year since he passed. I like this guy, great playing and teaching. No transcription for Tom Sawyer?

Yep! P/G
Remember that logo floating above the stage done with lasers on that tour.
