In the real world, employers don't care if you took basket weaving or helped old ladies cross the street. They want to know how fast you can assimilate into their business systems and if you can make those systems more efficient when you do. For the present, the bottom line is what matters. It's how the boss and you are rewarded (at least financially).
He was right but he was also wrong. GPA measures a student's ability to succeed in purely academics. The highest GPA (depending on which high school) is probably the sole reason to becoming a valedictorian. He said that through his pursuit of getting a high GPA, he missed out on extracurricular activities. The truth is, if he knew how to manage his time, he could've achieved both.
@@donjohnson8120 well think about if he decided to chose band or Athletics it would lower his GPA because its not weighted. Not trying to offend you ofcourse
But how can you weight extracurricular activity? You can't. I've been around Valedictorians before and they do participate in extracurricular activities. Besides, when a high school student applies to college, his grades from his high school courses will be the best reflection of his abilities to succeed in college. You going to tell me a C student in high school who joins every club, is the captain of the football team, and take photos for the school newspaper, and was the president of the student body, should be admitted into Harvard business school? There's a reason why non-academic courses activities are referred as "extra" curricular. lol
I live around plenty of teachers and administrators, people who work at schools in general, and a lot of them agree with this idea. But the government prevents them from actually doing anything about it.
Algamata the 5th It's ironic how teachers throw around the whole "work smart, not hard" phrase, yet disapprove when a student uses quizlet to pass his exam instead of wasting trivial hours studying for an exam to pass a class he doesn't even like.
Gage Taylor I agree with you that you don’t need good grades to make a lot of money. However, not everyone has the ability to make rich without traditional schooling. If the system were to be changed to that, at-risk students will use that as an excuse to not do school work, for failing, and stuff like that. In the end, there will be more students failing to make money than students making dough without the help of education. The system is set to where it is today because they want as many students to succeed as possible. And for those students who don’t need education to succeed, they will succeed anyways because they’re meant to succeed, no one can take away what you’re meant to be.
The ironic thing is that he proved his higher-than-average intelligence by saying this. He is absolutely right. But most people are unable to get that far in high school. I'm glad he said what he said.
That wasnt the point. Valedictorian is supposed to represent the graduating class, just because he knows the system is messed up doesnt mean he deserves valedictorian.
No, he's a fucking moron. He thinks there's some kind of conspiracy where grades aren't about you academics. There's nothing fishy going on. There is no corruption. There's no grades being given wrongly. If you got a poor grade, you're an idiot. We need to get out of this idea where it's okay to be a fucking moron!
My mom’s a teacher and let me tell you, they don’t have it any better than the student. They’re underpaid to deal with the kids who don’t want to learn because of how the system works. Teachers don’t get to choose teaching strategies. My mom once got in trouble for allowing an adhd student to stand and move around so he could learn more easily. She was trying to help the child but it went against the system and they wouldn’t have it.
Dude, teachers don't have it any better. Most I've met agree with everything said here. Low wages are still a problem, and many teachers need to get mulitple jobs to support teaching. Large class sizes also doesn't allow them to spend time with the kids and really help them. The system itself is broken, and needs a change.
The Test Dumby he would have to since the class practices graduation like 3 days before it’s the actual thing n u have to hear the same speech like 7 times the whole 9
John Ortiz Yup. Valedictorian and salutatorian at my school never took extracurriculars. The next three did take extracurriculars, despite having more work and doing just as well, if not better.
anytime someone's speaks up against the failing American educational system is amazing, but what is so amazing about this is that he did it on a stage, if front of his teachers, principal and the DOE who are causing the system to fail.
I think you're right but it's also not any one person's fault. I know many people who went through 4+ years of college and paid $20,000+ out of pocket for teaching degrees simply because they truly have the desire to help today's youth and make a difference in society. I on the other hand, selfishly studied finance only because I wanted to understand money and how to accumulate more wealth for myself. It's not the teacher's fault, its the system. There are really good people out there teaching our kids. I know from first hand experience.
If you want to learn, you go to the library. If you want to get laid, you go to college. The irony is that he probably was self taught for a lot of the time!
Well said and very sad that our educational system is so very difficult to adapt to the changing world! From a long line of educators and success stories I am the average by educational success but abundantly stronger quicker and keener than most! I give this child respect for acknowledging his hard work and regrets he's willing to highlight the honest failures we as a society are doing to our kids by not enabling them to be both and be proud!
Maybe the schools should listen to these "whining parents" You call it undermining the School system. I call it, striving for a decent education for your children. Unfortunately, what these "Whining parents" don't realize is there is little education to be had in schooling. STOP WHINING AND GET YOUR KIDS OUT OF THE PUBLIC SYSTEM. You are damaging your kids, and destroying any chance of a viable education. medium.com/fee-org/the-devastating-rise-of-mass-schooling-kerry-mcdonald-4efddf47a655
I came across this video in May 2019 and what an amazing honest speech. It's so true how teachers and the school system focuses on the smart ones and forgets the students struggling with grades, who in fact are the ones that need positive attention and feedback. Congrats to this young man and all the best for your future and your bravery . You definitely have balls to face anything the world has to offer. Blessings from a Chilean woman who lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada 🇨🇱🇨🇦👍
The way he wrote the speech was perfect for when others would realize his intentions it would be too late to stop and would probably only do more damage.
MONERISplayzTM If you tried this in grades K-12, they would stop you so quick. The American education system has you forfeit your rights whenever you enter a place of learning

He didn’t roast the school system. He said while that others got involved in multiple school activities and volunteerism, and still got A’s, he did not. He did not do those things that broaden your horizons and take up your study time. He simply selected and mastered weighted courses so he’d earn a high GPA. That’s it. He feels the system of choosing valedictorian is flawed, because many other A students made great achievements outside the classroom and they should be recognized for it - they deserve to be valedictorian.
That moment when the school thought their best student was gonna put in a good word for their school and how it’s important... *But then gets fucking exposed by their best student*
I can find someone in the comment section that wasn't paying attention at all. Did you not hear how he said he wasn't the best? How there were students that were actually better than him? He worked the system. Not every student will be able to. Even those more intelligent.
Anon Ymous you don’t understand this post. They found the right person, as another valedictorian would probably have NOT brought up how this is an obviously unfair system.
Michael 1 I know of valedictorians who were able to attain the highest GPA and still be involved in other aspects of high school. They're not mutually exclusive.
I find it refreshing how this valedictorian actually just exposed the truth about school nowadays, I also loved how he mentioned that he got in that pedestal today because he had to sacrifice social interaction for studying.
It's not even social interaction you have to sacrifice, but rather taking useful classes. If you want to optimize, you pick the classes that hand out the highest weighted value > just 4.0 for an A, and you get an A in them all for maximum credit. This was the case even when I was in high school, and I was class of 2001. If the classes you want (speech & debate, finance, whatever) happen not to have honors/AP/whatever credit assigned gives the most value, then if you want the title of valedictorian they are not options. Even if you manage 100's in them, you lose as long as at least one person who took more optimal classes managed at least a 90 in them. In my graduating class, our #1 student was clearly behind the #2 in ability, and due to a lie on class sign-up about what counted for honors credit I was #4 instead of #2 (though I had a great deal of respect + friendly rivalry with #2)...and I'd argue that there were several students outside the top 10 that were better than all four of us outright in academics...enough so that the whole shebang was a farce in terms of proving anything but who played the game the best...a very similar conclusion to this young gentleman. In that sense, our #1's position was very legitimate. All of us took a shot at it regardless, but the winner of that game played it the best. This was going on even before that, so in at least some states > 20 years at least! It's sad but that's how it is...though I suppose you could make a case that hiring + promotions require gaming the system over merit to a degree too. Once you prove a baseline level of ability, it's time to polish up the "make people like/trust/want to work with you" skills.
Mostly the administrators though, a lot of the teachers are just as disillusioned with the system as the students. Especially the ones that have been teaching for a long time.
He's right. I also graduated as valedictorian this year and it's not because I'm the smartest or the most hard working student, it's because I learned how to "work the system" or how to get perfect grades with the least amount of work and smarts possible.
This kid didn't just study, he watched. He expanded what he saw and the meaning behind everything he understood. He gained knowledge, but he achieved something more important, wisdom. EDIT: So many likes. Thanks everyone who liked and left a comment :)
Everyone watched. He actually had the balls to speak on what he watched. Most are socially awkward Valedictorians & won't have the guts to do so. This young man said what needed to be said regardless of ridicule, slept mindsets, or naysayers. Granted it will be forgotten by most but I'm sure atleast one teacher, parent/grandparent, aunt/uncle and/or one student who wants to become a teacher has taken his words to heart; thus, will use his words for motivation to do better and if you ask me.. that's a noble accomplishment.
The Keyboardslinger negative. If he called himself that it’d be narcissistic. The person calling him smart was obviously making a comparison to themselves :)
He deserves to be the valedictorian in order to find such flaw in the U.S. education system and give good details in describing it. He must be really smart to do that.
book smart is different from life smart. valedictorian means you learn everything they teach you book wise and get good grades. but besides knowing about plant cells and how to read extra big words, it takes wisdom to find the flaws in a system that is taught and masked to be perfect.
Fascinating, what a smart young man. Public schools need to bring back shop classes and stop labeling people as "Learning Disabled" and start figuring out how to teach them better, instead of leaving them in the dust. I speak as a high school dropout who turned to drugs for comfort after I was labeled and fell through the cracks.
just getahose I’m sooo glad I saw your comment cuz then I would have had to say it. This guy is most likely a fucking dope who couldn’t think beyond the subconscious automation of his brain given to him out of birth and primal instincts if he wanted to
*well I devoted all my time and lost friendships to getting good grades, might as well roast the whole education system while my school's staff behind me hear the cold hard truth*
*Jordan Kan* Part of education is realizing what motivates you and what doesn't. Parents, teachers, and coaches guide you but cannot tell you what is important for your life. You have to live it. This guy is saying that school activities were not important to him. The Valedictorian of my class was later confused about why I was succeeding in life yet he was the one getting top grades. Schools don't/can't measure future success.
Exactly, there's a time and place for a soap box rant, and it's not in front of the people who worked every day to try to teach you something, coordinated activities for you, the administration, support staff, volunteer coaches, friends and their families to whom this graduation might mean something. To this community, this guy is branded as an ungrateful prick. Good luck getting a recommendation from any of the people present.
Dude he even thanked his teachers. The education system is not the same as the teachers, not once was he roasting them. Honestly, a lot of teachers might have actually agreed with him.
I don't think he was ranting. He spoke with conviction. passion and purpose. He spoke his mind as he should. He was nether angry nor disrespectful. He taught us something that is old as this republic, that is free speech.
He's not trashing the teachers and principal, he's simply criticizing details of the experience that was organized well before any of those people took their positions, and giving credit to others that have had a more well-rounded one.
School directors were pissed. Parents applauded in agreement.

He learned the greatest lesson in this world: those who can game the system will almost always get further ahead than those who work hard.
that's exactly what my parents are telling me.
You are right but hard work is also necessary. If you game the system but do not work hard, then you can't go further.
“Work smart, not hard”
Algamata the 5th
It's ironic how teachers throw around the whole "work smart, not hard" phrase, yet disapprove when a student uses quizlet to pass his exam instead of wasting trivial hours studying for an exam to pass a class he doesn't even like.

brianx04 it wont change anything, you would still need grades because thats how the system works
Its a good quote but thats not how the system works today which is kinda sad.
The system can suck a fat one. There's plenty of ways to make a good living without ever needing to go to school.
I really wish I could apply that
The ironic thing is that he proved his higher-than-average intelligence by saying this. He is absolutely right. But most people are unable to get that far in high school.

The system itself is broken, and needs a change.

anytime someone's speaks up against the failing American educational system is amazing, but what is so amazing about this is that he did it on a stage, if front of his teachers, principal and the DOE who are causing the system to fail.
Consequently, How did he acquire his knowledge??? He is probably self-taught.

I find it refreshing how this valedictorian actually just exposed the truth about school nowadays, I also loved how he mentioned that he got in that pedestal today because he had to sacrifice social interaction for studying.
Lol
lol
