  • At a high school graduation in Exeter, Pennsylvania the senior class President gave a speech that did not go over well with the faculty. They cut him off right in the middle of his speech. We wanted to give him a chance to finish so we tracked him down.

“In our school, the title of class president could more accurately be class party planner, and Student’s council main obligation is to paint signs every week. Despite some of the outsanding people in our school, the lack of a real student government, combined with the authoritative attitude that a few teachers, administrators and board members have, prevents students from trully developing as leaders. Hopefully, this will change. Hopefully, for the sake of future students, more people of power within our school, who do not do so already, will begin to prioritize education itself as well as the empowering of students, because at the end of the day, it is not what we have done as wyoming area students or atlethes that will define our lives, but what we will go on to do as wyoming area alumni. And i hope that every one of my classmates here today, as well as myself, will go on to do great things in this world, and achieve true happiness and success. Thank you all for coming to this great celebration today.”

His speech was really well said! The fact that he added the “authoritative attitude” “prevents students from truly developing as leaders” felt critical. The adults at school really do make students feel that way, although it’s effective, it’s not helping my fellow classmates develop leadership skills either. Let alone leadership, but the feeling we’re put in a box. I started seeing this attitude when I got into middle school. I don’t really think about it that much but his speech made me remember that side of what’s going on in the classroom. About feeling like we’re put in a box, it honestly feels as if me and my classmates are factory workers where all we do is so work and follow directions.
I typed a really long comment and deleted most of it, so sorry if it sounds weird 😅

Challenge authority if they think they are above the law or are trying to circumvent the law for their own gains, especially at the cost of the weak and the poor. Everyone deserves to live with dignity and not to be preyed upon just because many were born into less fortunate circumstances. The problem is that everyone is selfish, it's human nature, and always seems to worry about their own well-being, whether they are rich, poor, powerful, young, old, etc. No one wants to work together for the better of humanity. Only when the earth is closed to being destroyed, then we might see some cooperation because it's a common threat to everyone.

This was my high school... Peter's completely right about it.
My sisters come home on a daily basis and complain about the school.
My saint of a grandfather used to be the athletic director back when my mother attended the school and they treated him terribly.
Honestly, I'm going to college right now in the area and it's just as bad as the high schools.
I was at the graduation for my sister and I have to say, I think it's so cool to see this getting attention. In my opinion, it's about damn time something like this happened. The school made it worse for themselves.

Because they cut him off, the original video of his speech went viral, he got to finish his speech on national television with an audience of millions of people, and the school became a national embarrassment.
