I understand that they were discovered in San Francisco by Marvin Gaye, but I think that they were launched in New Orleans. NOLA put them on her shoulders started them towards stardom. I remember going to this club in NOLA, I think the name of the club was The Horse (I might be wrong about it). But They were playing there, on more than one occasion. And of course they played the festivals. I believe you could find people in the city who believe to this day that they were from there. Regardless, Frankie Beverly and Maze were loved and nurtured and adopted by New Orleans. Maybe that’s where Southern Girl comes from.

I saw them,the first time, at Kelly Park on Ft.Bliss in El Paso,Texas WAAAY back in tha day.(So far back they had a dude dressed like a giant pack of Newports handing out FREE cigarettes to anyone who wanted them. Ridiculous!!) MAZE put on their usual stellar performance. The stage was ground level and women were reaching out to touch Frankie as they do. Security was harrasing them for it,but Frankie wasnt having his beloved fans abused by them. He told them to leave them alone. All love from Frankie and MAZE!!
