- Many of you probably wouldn’t consider Thundercats to be among the best of 80s cartoon shows.
Over the years, Thundercats has developed a beloved fandom, and people have appreciated the relevance of the content even for adults. For those of you who are unaware of the premise, it was about a feline-like humanoid species called Thundercats, who had fled their planet and landed on Third Earth. They tried to make it their home, but their arch-enemies follow, and it all boils down to a final showdown! We had some entertaining villains here, and in this video, we will look into the deadliest ones of the lot.

Thundercats was one of THE 80s cartoons. Definitely in my top 5 of adventure cartoons.

I was pissed when they canceled the 2011 run. It was a great story. A new tale on their origin.
Canceled that series and replaced it with that other cartoon that I will not mention 😐😐
What makes me more upset is reading the future plans and storylines that probably will never come to fuention. For example, a backstory of Cheetara where takes off her ankle weights to reveal she can move fast enough to travel through time. I would have love to have seen how the rest would have played out.

Lion-o looks fantastic and Cheetara looks beautiful as usual. Mummra looks frightfully good.
I always wondered if they were trying to setup a romance between Lion-o and Cheetara despite the age difference or maybe Lion-o would fall for Willa of the Warrior women.

Well 1. since Lion-o’s pod broke and he aged and the others didn’t Cheetara would be close to his age. I know about a 10 year gap but still... but I think their relationship is more of a guardian and prince type. And plus Tigera already has eyes for Cheetara. And with Willa, there’s that species difference thing.
The reason this cartoon was great is that it made the other cartoons of the time seem campy by comparison and actually made us think a wee bit... and a lot of us had Cheetarah fantasies.
I think it has good animation for its time and it seems to be one of the few cartoons with an actual storyline.
I loved Thundercats grew up with it both in the 80s, and on Toonami in 1998 when they ran it, the characters on both good side, and bad were great. A great voice cast, It had good music, and some good animation for that time. At times deep story arcs like Lion-O's Anointment, ThunderCats - Ho! though a movie was later made into a multi part episode.
There is something missing about Mumm-ra's weakness not explained here. Mumm-ra become weak and restored to his original form if he sees his reflection, either from the mirror, sword of omens, or other reflecting surfaces.
As to reflect his true self and stop living in denial. 🤣 As a kid, I always felt that Mumra was that kid who got picked on too many times growing up and got fed up, so he joined the dark forces in their Hellish crusades to feel part of something bigger than himself, thus why he goes from a decripiped (sorry for typo) mummy to a massive lethal evil weapon of doom for those forces to use. 🤔 I always felt pity for him.
He also had a soft spot for Ma-Mutt and would give in if Ma-Mutt was threatened or placed in danger.
That is such a BS weakness, just to keep Mumm-ra from being too OP. How can the mightiest villain in the show be taken out by a make-up compact?!

I loved ThunderCats so much! Between them and TMNT I was set! Saturday morning cartoons were the only reason to get up early on the weekend. My last name is literally "Lyons" so I felt a connection. I hope they do some kind of reboot but hopefully they don't fuck it up like they've done with other ones

Rumor has it that Adam WIngard is bringing a cgi version to theaters in 2023.
To me, Slithe owes his design to both Gollum and The Goblins from Rankin Bass' The Hobbit. Not only was he animated and designed by the same studio( Top Craft with Ted Wolf/ Tsuguchi Kubo) but has their facial traits and body build!
Can't believe you left out MONGOR! The most terrifying and effective of them all. So terrifying was, that he was the personification of fear itself, and managed to defeat the TCs and even almost Lion-O. Also, I think Demolisher deserved a spot.
FYI, this show was actually more popular among children than people might know. It was down played in the media bc parents complained that Mummra and the mutants were introducing their children to the concepts of Satanism. The same reason why Dungeons and Dragons game and even the cartoon were being demonized. I remember having to sneak and watch Thundercats with my friends after school. We got caught, and we're made to watch reruns of Little House on the Prairie instead.😂
It was part of my cartoon block along with random stuff from hanble barbera: grape ape, captain cavemen and 2 different ghostbuster cartoons. my parents I don't think cared about the cartoon they had a thing about sound. especially my dad.
Thundercats did have a lot of imagery and symbolism from the occult, i can see why parents would have been worried

I still watching most of the 80's cartoons show and tv shows on dvd, cause they are Culture classic.
The 2011 remake was pretty damn good. Far better than the travesty that came out a year or so ago.
Amen to that! Both points, ThunderCats Roar was a travesty of a show, more akin to a parody or pastiche than anything to do with any of the previous shows, heck the very _franchise_ itself!

Live action does not work for these animated shows, it’s stupid and they always have to condense the story for a movie. A CGI or well animated series is much better.

I had the pleasure of seeing both versions of this series and will forever be sorry that the latter ended on such a cliffhanger. Because I so wanted to know what came next. Had no idea it would be cancellation. Great job with the video.
We need an R rated live action thundercats movie, they are essentially evolved wild animals, imagine a scene where they get in touch with they're animal side and just start ripping the badguys apart

Mumra alone seem to be a rated R villain too. Summoning ancient evil spirits and all. 🤔I know the Mummy movies made such things comical and all, but it can be quite dark.

All these same voice actors went on to voice SilverHawks as well. I loved it equally as much as this show. MonStar was exactly like Mumra except space based. Same voice actor for sure Lol. You should do video on the SilverHawks. 🙂

The same animation and voice team had a third series, called TigerSharks, as well. They appeared on the screens of Mumm-Ra's pyramid ship in the 2011 reboot, which would make them a part of the ThunderCats/SilverHawks Universe. (Yes, the 'Hawks appeared there, too!)

@@LilySteph1949 everyone seems to know the Thundercats but not a lot know of Silverhawks. I wouldn't say it was better than the TCs, but certainly a close 2nd in badassery points.
Love the thundercats, I also own the complete series on DVD. Would love to see a live action movie come out, just hope that it will stay true to the cartoon!!
I liked Thundercats better than Master's of the Universe. Definitely one of my favorite cartoons as a kid
I used to run home from school to watch Thunder cats!! I even refused to start my homework until I watched it!! I now have the entire series on DVD.

First, let me thank you guys for putting out such AWESOME videos for all of us. This video was like all of your others meaning it DIDN'T DISAPPOINT!!! I wasn't really big on the remake of ThunderCats but the 80's OG ThunderCats was one of my favorite cartoons growing up!!! To this very day, I still collect Mumm-Ra
merch and memorabilia. My top two favorite 80's cartoon villains would have to be Mumm-Ra (of course) and Prime Evil from Filmations Ghostbusters. Like I said before, the video was absolutely STELLAR and your UA-cam Channel is one of the BEST!!! Keep up the great work!!!

Mumm-Ra was one of the few villains that truly scared me as a child. They don't make them like that any more.

The Demolisher to me was the hardest villian because he never give up, even defeating Mumma-Ra and Lion-O, Lion-O only won because he call the other Thundercats for help !.
Loved both the 1985 and 2011 series of the Thundercats. Keep in mind thundrainium weakens them even as mist or fumes.

This is one of the best cartoons ever to exist you just had to be there to understand and live through that particular error in fact I really feel sorry for my nephews who didn't live in that time to just see all of these nice episodes every episode was really good

I was not born to see this series when it debuted, but I did see it on Toonami when it was re-aired, and I enjoyed it along with Voltron in the 2000s or so. I remember an episode of Full House that Michelle was watching the show in the background. The show was fantastic for its time. The reboot was good, but sadly was cut too short.
The way the narrator pronounces names like "Slithe" and "Monkian" tells me he has never watched the show...Just Saiyan

Great 1980's cartoon. Thundercats, he-man, G.I. JOE and silverhawks are three great cartoon series til this day.
As a child I had the _biggest_ crush on Mum-Ra. One of the 2 highlights of each episode was:
*1.)* His transformation incantation (I got goosebumps EVERYTIME.)
*2.)* Lion-O's "Thundercats....HO!"
I was always confused as to why Grune (who _himself_ was the SAME SPECIES as the REST of the Thundercats) had a _FULL lion's head_ INSTEAD of the hybridized feline/human look the rest of the Thundercats spotted.
I'm still shocked that shows still go by the amount of toys sold from a show, if not, they stop it, even if the viewings are good on it

Yes, it and Heman were ultimately just toy commercials, but this list only scratched the surface of how surprisingly versatile the world building was here...also I heard that the ‘inside the actors studio’ guy wrote the theme song...after some time as a pimp.

Man I don't know why you think that ThunderCats was not a great 80s cartoon when it absolutely was! Even when they played the reruns in the late 90s, quite a few kids that never knew about until then went crazy over it!

"ThunderCats" was very popular during the 80's along side "Masters of the Universe"... In fact, it started to take off from its premier in '85, just as He-Man was on the decline. And claiming the animation lacked the "finesse" of big-budget Marvel, Hasbro/Sunbow Productions... I think it actually offered something much more intricate, given it was a cultural collaboration between American and Japanese animation artists.
He-man's animation was good for the time but the animation of Thundercats was far superior and more anime-like. Also He-man used much more stock footage,beyond their respective transformation sequences they both reused, punching, running , ect.
@@shadowconvoy Absolutely, but I can understand why, since the demand was so great for FILMATION to supply "Masters of the Universe" episodes in order to keep up with the introduction of new characters released by the toy line. Lou Scheimer ran his animation like a well-oiled machine, given the technology of the day. If he were alive today, he would have been a kid in a candy store. But you are right, not only were action motions repeated, but even characters were reintroduced, just touched up with maybe a different color hair, or shirt.

I loved this toon as a kid, the theme music was great, the main villain was just creepy enough to be genuinely scary and compelling to a young kid, it had it all. Definitely in my top 5 "toons from my childhood" list.

I’d like to see a continuation of the 2011 series, it was amazing and was beginning to include characters from other series like He-Man, Silverhawks, etc. They should do another season and just improve the animation.
