- He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was one of the defining products of the 80s. This show was extremely popular and influential among kids and, as a cartoon, it broke the convention that animated shows cannot be successful on weekday slots! The pro-social messages in the narrative, the action-packed drama, and the titular gallant hero all combined to make something that captivated an entire generation. However, it all started from the quest to give a toyline a suitable back-story. The kids had no idea who were the good guys and who the baddies were, and without a nice story, they wouldn’t know how to play with these characters!
Our beloved childhood show has come a long way since then, and currently, we are waiting for the Masters of the Universe live-action movie with bated breath. The worldwide pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have dealt a blow to the production process, which has already been going on for years. Several directors have come and gone, and the project has changed hands faster than a ten-dollar bill in a market! With the Superhero craze striking a chord with audiences of late, the well-written He-Man lore might just pave the way for a blockbuster, although there was a previous unsuccessful attempt to turn the show into a film in 1987. The strange thing is many of Mattel’s people, including “toy guru” Scott Neilich (Spector Creative on UA-cam), swear that there was nothing done to the toy to make it stink. So whatever smell was there was not intentional. While giving an olfactory component to a toy was not unheard of (Strewberry Shortcake) the toy makers were generally bright enough not to sell something that parents would immediately toss in a dumpster for smelling like roadkill. (The first generation Creepy Crawlies had taught them important lessons about toys that smell like roadkill.)

The original concept was that Hordak was a sorcerer. That’s how his original action figure was presented. But Filmation changed that when they used him as the main villain for She-Ra.

I loved that they made Trap Jaw and Skeletor the same race in one of the comics.
Well Skeletor is only half Gar. He's also half human in those stories as he was King Randor's half brother.
It was pretty smart of them, they did that with a few more obscure characters too, like Sweet Bee from Etheria being retconned into being a form of Andreenid, like Buzz-Off (Albeit a much more human looking one, without clawed hands or insectile eyes.)

In the Filmation cartoon, Zodac reminded me of Metron, one of DC Comics' New Gods characters.

In the German radio play, some villains had a much more complex backstory: Beastman (who is portrait as extreme simple minded) used to be a smart scientist, and TrapJaw lost his arm (and jaw) while saving a child that would have been crushed by a tank driven by Skeletor - who destroyed their lives and turnt them into minions.
MerMan, in the other hand, had ambitions on his own. He tried not only to defeat He-Man, but also to overthrow Skeletor by submerging the whole planet.
Guess that was not translated, but original content? In any case, they did a fantastic job - I consider the radio play to be better than the TV series.

The 02 Adult Swim cartoon was BOSS. After the series ended I was in a funk similar to that as when the Justice League and the Teen Titans went off the air, I still wish Mattel would revisit this toyline.

As a kid I used to have a lot of these toys. I had Stinkor but not Merman, and I just realized, the original toys from the 80's were both the same model, just painted different.

Actually he's from neither of those. He's from Horde World. He INVADED and took over Etheria, which is where his base of operations is - interesting fact - he can't go home until he conquers Eternia as that was the original mission Horde Prime gave him.

When the MOTU toyline first hit in 1982, I though Zodac was an evil warrior. The card backs didn't initially tell you who was good or bad. I mostly figured it out from the minicomics and toy commercials.

Faker wasn’t blue in the 80s cartoon. I think all the scenes they used here are from James Eatock’s fan film “Return of Faker” from a few years ago that he wasn’t allowed to release.

You forgot to mention Beast Man's background from the German audio cassettes. According to them Beast Man was once a scientist, smartest of his entire species. He put an artifact, the tablet of the ancient magicians, out of reach from Skeletor and in the end got tortured and experiemented on by Skeletor to make him a dumb loyal slave.
