Saunders and the squad break in four teenage replacements. Director: Georg Fenady Writers: Esther Mitchell, Bob Mitchell Stars: Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, Jack Hogan
My father, who was a World War II veteran and I use to sit in front of the TV every Tuesday night to watch Combat on ABC. Every time I watch an episode my thoughts go right back to those good ole days with Dad. I was 14 years old then and 69 now.... and it seems like only yesterday.
I was about 8 years old when the Greek TV station ,( belonging to the Greek Army Forces) first showing " COMBAT ".Now I'm 57 and I 'm still watching again and again the episodes .
This was my father Georg Fenady's directorial debut ! Ironically it was His first day! Love and miss you, "Ya big lug!" Thanks for a great life "SPORT"!
I know about him ! Great TV director. Saw many episodes of things like "Quincy" he directed. I always paid attention to directors, who really are the ones who make the show.
@johnfenady1226 Would you please consider starting a Wikipedia page for your father? Even if you are not familiar with their format, there are plenty of people that will be willing to help you put together a permanent memorialization of his accomplishments.
@@DonFahquidmi That would be great however i would need help because I'm not technology and computer savvy. People I know can do that. Dad had a 50 year career and would need a lot of detail! Thanks for your suggestion. My best JF.

My favorite war tv series in my teenage years. I remember Sgt. Saunders with his Thompson sub-machine gun, Kirby with his Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), Big John with his garand rifle, Doc and Lt. Jason with his carbine rifle.

Apparently not, and I guess it's nothing to be ashamed of because it never happened again. Again, NO Man knows how "brave" or reliable he will be under stress of mortal danger. Gosh! My favorite show when I was growing up in Alice, Texas, back in the 1970's. A bunch of us kids would get together and head out to the brush and pasture areas to play Combat! Everyone wanted to be Kirby!
Great episode. This episode took me back many years ago. I loved this series, and so did my Mom. I used to stay up til late in the morning to watch this show. I'd say, 2:00 AM on a school night, and my Mom would yell at me for not sleeping, because I had school that day. I'd finish the episode, and go back to sleep, and go to school that day, and tell everyone that I saw Combat last night, the best show in the world, and they would reply, '' So did I. ConlanCarter wasthe best as " DOC " . I think another very well played part he had in BRIDGEHAED In fact there were at least three actors doing the role but one is not mentioned in Wikipedia
My father, a career Army officer, once told me that good NCO's were priceless. He said he'd rather have a few outstanding NCO's than a dozen coffee fetching colonels in the Pentagon.
You can say that again. I was a 2LT to 1LT in West Germany. Half the NCOs in my company were mediocre to worthless. If we went to war against the Soviets my company would have all been wasted.
When Kirby said he'd be a hundred in August, it reminded me of my time in 'Nam. I had walked into the company bunker, which served as a club, and the guy acting as bartender asked how I was. I said i felt very old, and very tired. He made a screwdriver for me. It didn't help. The guy who played Tobin, and who went on to be newly on Gunsmoke , was ,or is the son of one of the greatest character actors of all time, Dub Taylor. His name is Buck Taylor.

Vic Morrow was one tough Guy, He played that part so darn well . Loved this show as a Kid when it aired on TV an when it was on Encore I tried to tape as much as I could . Not like fake swagger we see in Donald J Trump!!! Ok,sorry to bring politics in such a great show and I hate to make a mockery of such a great actor like Vic, RIP
From it´s intensity it reminded a lot of Erich Maria Remarque´s two books ALL QUIET AT THE WESTERN FRONT and FARWELL TO ARMS. Remarque had been a German volunteer in World War I. writing mostliy about his own War expericnes. Like those youngsters in this exellently done episode he had been much to young straight from the Highschool class bank and went with the wrong expectations into the bloody battles he himself has experienced. Fun Fact: Past World War I he made his daily living writing for a German Ladie´s magazin. But when the Nazis started to show their true face past 1933 his outspoken public criticism made him to immigrate into the USA.
That one guy who called Kirby "Pops" ....kind of like a young version of Kirby. Kirby must be thinking...."was I that big of a smart ass" when I was that age.
Did you notice his anger toward that young man after he was killed wasn't really anger at him, but for his foolish actions that caused him to be killed. Kirby obviously wanted the young man to succeed. I would guess a lot of young people are lost this way in battle. But I think now in our day they are better trained. After all, that war was so insane that the Germans had old men and kids fighting by the end of it all.
Kirby's background is that of a slum kid, a 'punk' as he calls it. He recognized that part of himself in that kid and did what he could to smarten him up.
Never missed an episode as a kid. One point I'll mention ..Saunders wears a marine helmet used by marines in Pacific theater. He's army in European theater.
Not necessarily. Camouflage patterns (trousers, jackets & one piece coveralls) were issued to select ETO army units in summer 1944. 41st Armored Infantry Battalion (2nd Armored Division); 2nd & 30th Infantry Divisions. Camos were withdrawn end of August 1944.
I recall My Gunny looking at me when I showed up at my perment duty station, he said "How old are you Marine?" I said 17 Gunnery Sargent." He had that same look.
What a beautiful ending. NO Man knows how he will act under extreme stress, especially in a Combat situation. Young Cops are not much different from soldiers. When I was 23 I had my first experience. Three of us chased a car thief with a shotgun into a building. Even though I was a relatively safe distance (about 30yds) I froze behind a large, wooden pole. I was back in control of myself and advancing to next position in about 5 seconds.
Except soldiers fight for freedom and cops take freedom away. Soldiers are honorable and cops are bullies and thieves with badges. Soldiers are heroes and cops are scabs.
An interesting side note - the tommy gun that Vic Morrow used in the show was actually made of wood. An authentic version was too heavy to carry during filming.
One plus to having the cast be about 10-15 years older than the average WW 2 GI was that they LOOKED older & more experienced than the new replacements.
Sgt. Saunders has no back story except he is from Chicago area and was in North Africa and the italy. I going out on a limb that Saunders was in the Abe Lincoln Brigade too
I think its "We're overbudget" I love these series. I remember in the Philippines, we didn't even have TV. I would go to the neighbor's ; I will wait for the signal- the clap of the Venture's "Let's Go" i also remember when Vic morrow came to visit Colegio de San Juan de Letran (Founded in 1620). The fk priests of the school decided that only 6 and 7th grade but only sections I and II. I was in the 7th grade and in section III. I missed meeting the guy. After he was killed on of the Twilight Zone, the movie, that was it. I haven't met the young daughter, Jennifer Jason Leigh- I believe she is old but the Combat series, the music theme has a was of preserving the memories except the memories of the Dominican priests- If Fr. Ramon Perez was the sergeant- Oh forget it!
@@frankhernandez6883 , yes, you can. And his smokes, and his girlfriend's photo, if that floats your boat. Just be quick. Because you're point man now. for a long a you live. Thus sayeth the Book of Hard Knox.
This must've been a producer's dream; No sets to speak of, a few uniforms, cigarettes, an explosion or two, and blank ammo. Talk about a recipe for financial success based on paper-thin plots. Watching this today, my main consolation for having been a fan was that I was in my early teens when it aired.
Good writing. What really happened was the progress in Europe was more than expected. Eisenhower scrapped the officer training program in the US and had those older, college educated people sent over immediately. They were fed into the line, individually, and not by unit. Having a formal education did not help survival on the line. Those filler guys were totally inexperienced and had a high casualty rate.

I loved this growing up. Vic Morrow and that tommy gun!
An interesting side note - the tommy gun that Vic Morrow used in the show was actually made of wood. An authentic version was too heavy to carry during filming.
You got that right...he used a real one for shooting scenes
@@daves2520 Wrong. It wasn't a wooden mockup. There were 2, and neither were "fake".
I believe it aired on Tuesday.
He hated Guns of all sorts in real life.
Watching in 2021. When watching Saunders, Kirby, Doc as a kid, the looked like old adults. Now they look you. But the do look war weary.
This looks like one bad ass show!
One plus to having the cast be about 10-15 years older than the average WW 2 GI was that they LOOKED older & more experienced than the new replacements.
I read that they wouldn't let them shave, and they always had the same costume. Laundered once a week.
@@floydvaughn836 They had to have shaved some or they'd have grown beards.
I'll never forget when we were going to get 2 battions of NVA going to pepper our ship during tet. I was a nervous sailor that nite
The German soldier creeping on the ground with eyeglasses sort of looks like Manfred Mann
He survived the first day and now McBride is a veteran of combat.
The problem is replacements always want to be in charge and tell Saunders what to do!
pretty amazing how screenplaywrights Bob & Esther Mitchell establish in 22 minutes the characters of the 4 replacements, and we empathize with them
Sgt. Saunders has no back story except he is from Chicago area and was in North Africa and the italy. I going out on a limb that Saunders was in the Abe Lincoln Brigade too
A lot of people talk about what they would do in those situations, but you will never know until you've faced them.

i like they way they shoot up ammo then when one gets killed they never take the dead mans ammo to top up just walk away and leave it
Lucky was the soldier who came back alive and in one piece. Those German and French winters had to be unforgiving. Cage is a winner.

Wen I was a kid my dad watched this show alot
Great ending the way it really is
"He made a wrong move and he's dead, that's all the speech there is".....classic Saunders.

This must've been a producer's dream; No sets to speak of, a few uniforms, cigarettes, an explosion or two, and blank ammo. Talk about a recipe for financial success based on paper-thin plots. Watching this today, my main consolation for having been a fan was that I was in my early teens when it aired.
well written and charming. The rest of the cast got a week off. Saunders and Doc episode.
We won stfu
The heart and soul of the army is the NCO’s.
Man! I really liked this episode.
i like it also
they look like theyve been in the field. unlike many movies now.
im 65 and i grew up on shit like this, the fugitive mission impossible.
