As a young boy in the 60s I watched this show with my companions every chance and were glued to it. Later in life spending 4 years in 82d Airborne Infantry,I can’t help but think these shows contributed to my being a great combat soldier. Thanks for keeping them alive(and me).

I can't believe how critical the comments are that people are making about this show. This was great "TV" back in the day and its even better today. Who cares if some things are inaccurate. Just watch it for what it is, really good television, and keep your
    derogatory comments to yourself!

??? I haven't read many negative comments here, just one about whether or not a coil of wire would float, that wasn't much of a negative comment, in fact, he was right. So what? I think everyone likes this that is commenting. I doubt most young people will even try to watch this, not enough trash talk or glitzy costumes with weird hairstyles, so relax and enjoy it, it is by far the best on youtube. In fact, I can't even watch any of the new movies in 2017, every movie is now feminism on parade, totally bullshit.

I'm an Aussie, 52, nearing 53 and as a prepubescent scallywag this was one of my favourite TV shows. I admit I loved this macho stuff. We'd watch these shows, go to the bush that was all around my home, literally just across the road and "play" our war games, where no-one ever really died and everyone was a hero (if only in their own mind).
Sadly, (though I can't argue with people wanting to live in a house) that bush is now developed and all houses. Still, watching this, or I should say rewatching, this show has me reminiscing about those days when we didn't lock our doors, leash our canines (they just followed us on our adventures and like us it was "out of the house 'till lunch, or dinner" - sadly those days seem long gone for keyboards pixel screens and fear of serial killers), or worry about every little thing, well, maybe one - back then (and I know the youth of today grows up very fast) for us, it was very, very bad to get "girls germs" - Sadly today it's a very different world.

Jack Lord was right when he referred to Little John as a "clumsy ox" as that's what his character is often reduced to in order to propel the plot forward. In season 2 he trips while throwing a grenade and ends up killing a squad mate, in season 3 he leaves behind a package and attracts the attention of the Germans while retrieving it, and now he fumbles a spool of phone cable into a river. Little John in the first season was far better written, and had more depth to his character. Still enjoying Combat, and this episode was amazing with Vic Morrow, Rick Jason, and Jack Lord all together.

That town set sure got used a lot. The people who had to clean it up and prepare it for looking the way it would be used the next time must have put in a lot of overtime. Some times it need to look blasted and other times like people still lived there. Amazing that they could do such good work preparing for another episode a couple weeks later.

Whenever I want to satisfy my need to watch war movies or shows Combat never disappoints! The theme of this episode Is trust and betrayal. The Sergeant thought he was betrayed In the past and since then never trusted anybody.
I've met people like that with a 'chip on their shoulder' always.
We should all believe that there Is good deep down In every person and to make a mistake Is only human.

Another good solid episode. I read somewhere that the antagonism between Morrow and Lord was real. They had done a movie together a few years earlier and came to blows supposedly. Might be a legend but I don't find it hard to believe. Both were very strong willed actors who were known to be pains in the butt. A friend of mine had a sister who dated Morrow when he was still in NY. His comment was "if Vic ever smiled his face would fall apart". I know Quinn Martin in an interview said he had a ton of respect for Morrow as an actor but warned producers that he could be a bit of a problem. And Lord would later do a series, Stoney Burke, with Bruce Dern. Word is Dern hated him. Still, both actors' body of work will live on.

A U.S. Army WW2 infantry squad included a three-man, light machine gun team. This included an air-cooled M2 Browning light machine gun with detachable tripod, manned by a gunner, loader, and an ammunition carrier.
Sergeant Chip Saunders' squad was permanently understrength at roughly six men. I cannot recall if he ever had more, possibly eight men at best. The squad did not have the dedicated three-man light machine gun team.
Kirby performed the job of the machine gun team with his BAR, one-man, light machine gun. An experienced, stalwart veteran, though prone to complaining, Kirby seems to have done a fairly good job substituting for the three-man machine gun team, even though the M2 Browning had far more sustained firepower.

Yes there are a lot of nit pickers who comment on small slights seen on each episode of COMBAT but take into consideration there are plenty of stagehands creating the EPISODES and from time to time while filming one or two of the stagehands is called away (possible family matter to take care of) while someone else takes his or hers place during the filming sequence and perhaps an item or two is left as is and the PRODUCERS,DIRECTORS are pressed for time:sending out the 98% almost finished product (episode) to the film editors and music cue-ers and maybe announcing a voice over on the opening theme and saying (for example) SPECIAL GUEST STAR JOE BLO FROM IDAHO!! and getting the finished product over to MANY MANY TV BROADCAST STATIONS across the country for thier respective BROADCAST DATES!!!! So sit back and enjoy the squad as they get the ole job done******

In every episode of COMBAT! SGT Saunders or LT Hanley with the squad have had to deal with serious, negative attitudes from privates, other sergeants, and sometimes officers.
There was another episode where Saunders had to deal with a demolitions expert with just as negative and sour an attitude as Jack Lord's communications sergeant character.
And if it wasn't a serious bad attitude problem from an American soldier, the squad sometimes got it from some German NCO or officer or a local Frenchman.
Hanley and Saunders problem for the entire series was that the squad was seriously understrength. A WW2 U.S. Army infantry squad was typically 12 men. The American squad comprised a squad leader, buck sergeant, an assistant squad leader, corporal, a three-man light machine gun team, and seven riflemen.
You never saw Saunders' squad with more than eight men. There were new squad members each week who were there to get killed in ambushes, artillery, snipers, and other run-in's with the Germans who were all over the countryside like zombies from The Walking Dead. Saunders never had an assistant squad leader, a corporal. Every week, Saunders would lead five to six men on patrols meant for twelve men. In the show that was supposed to be indicative of manpower shortages endemic to the American Army engaged in long-term combat operations against the Germans and other enemies.
Saunders' squad received few replacements, never enough to bring the squad back to full strength. Usually two to three replacements at most would show up each week to be killed off so that the recurring squad members survived, even if repeatedly wounded.

The way the Sarge finally died in real life is truly tragic and bizarre. Killed by a helicopter blade while shooting a Vietnam war scene. War is deadly even on TV.

I forgot what episode it was, but the best scene was this one when they got a new guy in their squadron. Saunders asked him if he had seen any combat and the new guy replied that he saw some on TV, but only the ones where Rick Jason was the featured star.

At 0.13, that is not Saunders, but a stand in. They shot the scene in France, but Morrow told the producers, "not paying me, I am not going." Stand in does a pretty good Saunders walk.

+James Horan Good eyes, nice call . Hollywood sometimes send a second unit out to location without the Actors but stand ins to save money too

Actually they filmed quite a bit of this in France (Loire Valley) with the MGM backlot and Franklin Canyon. They had stand-ins for the whole squad. Also used some of the same footage from the episode "Bridge at Chalons". A great episode none-the-less.

The music is much appreciated. It’s like a break. It’s very dramatic. I don’t like the movie music. It’s not as if it isn’t music, but the vehicle of the music is the problem. It’s actually patronizing. It’s very childish. I hate Speilburg movie music, it’s very childish. It’s not handled well, the insignificance at human danger. It goes very frivolous. I really appreciate this show, Combat. There’s actual severity of trying to survive and it’s very adult. The show respects loss of life and trying to survive. Whoever created it, does sense the adult dark.

Would of been a good story line if the writers could have made an episode with a RUSSIAN SOLDIER who for whatever reason made HIS way to FRANCE for a secret mission and SAUNDERS and HANLEY had to ensure that HE gets to where he is to rendevous with other INTELLIGENCE OPERATIVES! and the information between the RUSSIAN and whomever could possibly shorten the war!!!!!
