Taking you right the way through from the Coupe's top secret inception and the battle fought for its existence, to its stolen componentry and how it proved to the world that BMW wasn't getting dull.

The Z3 M Coupe car was no wider than the standard face-lifted roadsters at any point (front or rear), as the dimensions of the face-lift for the roadster cars came from the dimensions of the M Coupe and M Roadster.

Hi folks, Just to add a quick note. Whilst this is the story of the Z3M Coupe, much of the technical information on this car (such as the drivetrain), is also relevant to the Z3M Roadster, which was released a couple of years before the Coupe in 1996. However in the interest of keeping the story of this fascinating car easy to follow I've elected to mostly refrain from acknowledging the Z3M Roadster when telling the tale of the Coupe. I wanted to mention this now to certify fans of the Z3M Roadster that I know it arrived on the scene first and shares a great deal of componentry with its fixed roof sibling, the video's narrative just wouldn't have flowed as well if I were to backtrack and mention the roadster every couple of minutes. One day I will produce a standalone video on the beautiful Z3 and M roadster, as they greatly deserve one.

I worked at a BMW dealership during the golden era (1999-2000) and remember when we received Z3M coupe fresh off the truck. The service guys went gaga and so did I. The other highlight was seeing a brand new (then) E39 M5 being delivered. It of course was ordered by the CEO of the auto group I worked for. I remember storing his winter tires in our parts loft.
Great video. The M Coupe has been my only car since 1997. I got the first one in Manchester. I swapped it for a secondhand one in 2003. God knows what I'd drive if I didn't have it! Best car purchase ever.
I've watched you're video over and over, it is simply the most informative, in depth and well put together video about the M coupe, I recently got the chance to purchase one, and LOVE everything about it. "It doesn't make sense to the brain because its for the heart" is how i describe it to people.
One of my favorite cars ever ,, a rear 3/4 look at one and they are magic .

I own a z3 coupe 2.8 since couple of years now and I was considering to change for a lotus elise. But after I have seen your video, I am not so sure anymore! I like the way you make your videos, keep going...

While there technically were no special edition coupes, there are several very rare color combinations. Colors like Evergreen and Laguna Seca Blue where not sold in large numbers, effectively making them "special editions" and very sought after today. Indeed, The car has taken on cult status. There are several annual reunion style events for these cars around the world. Reference "Dorkfest" and "Schuh Syndikat" in the USA, but there are others in Europe.
Thanks for the bonus information, Eric. It's especially interesting to hear that the Laguna Seca Blue M Coupe sold in such small quantities, as it doesn't look too dissimilar to BMW's Yas Marina Blue, which is such a popular colour on their current 'M' Cars. I guess it's a good example of how tastes change over the years.

BMW ///M Coupé "Millenium Edition:
This is a one-off model that was made by BMW Technik GmbH in the year 2000, for the Auto Motor Und Sport Maganize. Only one was produced, and it was drawn within the readers of the magazine. The winner was a guy named Dirk, (nickname Greenswap on the German ZRoadster Forum). He says that he won the contest, and BMW authorized him only to choose the exterior color. He had 3 options: Orangeblur (the one he chose), Insectyellow (unknown), and Gunmetal (also unknown).The interior had to be the same color as the exterior. As you can see on the pictures, the wheels, the steering wheel and the upholstery were unique. The car was up for sale in April 2015 with 25.000km for 75.000€."
BMW ///M Coupe "Safety Car "
This is another unique model made by BMW ///M. With 522hp, it was made to be a safety car on Moto GP. It seems it was used in a few race, although we can't confirm. It had all the necessary equipment to do the job: lights, roll-cage, fiire extinguisher, etc. ... and of course a Turbo in the engine bay. In 2005 it was annouced for sale at a price of 40.000GPB. No signs of it since then.
This is my ALL time favorite BMW car!. Quirky looks but unique shooting brake design make it very usable and such a dramatic drive. An electric conversion (with Tesla Model S drivetrain) would be a killer project!.

I had a z3 3.0 coupe in college back in 2001. It was a great car, too bad it was stolen. I only had it for a year

Excellent video. Way better production value than the relatively low subscriber count would indicate. Seems you've hit the ground running.
A few nit-picks about the presented facts in the video.
BHP and HP are not the same. The USDM S52 engine made 240 HP, not 240 BHP. Etc.
The M Coupe was not wider in the front (or the rear) than the face-lifted Z3 roadsters. The facelift actually came from the dimensions of the M Roadster and M Coupe. The track widths were possibly very slightly wider because of wheel and tire choice, but the front hood, fender wings, and bumper covers of the face-lifted Z3 roadster were identical width to those on the M Coupe. Same for the rear fenders/wings and bumper covers.

Front end as you say in the video is shared with the roadster, so the width is no different to the roadster. The only width differences are at the back vs the old 4cyl roadster.

Most times, you're comparing the M Coupé with the standard roadster. It would be more accurate to compare M variants or standard variants of the bodies

What about the BMW E36 Compact? It's just a more civil version of the Z3. I think they looked a little at The rear end of the Compact, when doing The Coupe.

i know where they went wrong.if they would have made the rear like a datsun 240z or toyota celica 20 gt 1975 .it would have worked or a shrunken 69 mustang ,,.
Seems to me the z3 & e36 are popular because of their brand & image. S54 engines have rod bearing problems, chassis has lots of metal fatigue problems (strut towers, subframe, diff mounts are all prone to cracking & separating). They use a lot of plastic like the thermostat housing & valve-cover (sounds like a cost savings measure). The suspension is fixed, so the only thing you can align is the front toe. Doesn’t seem like a well engineered car at all.

I had a ‘00 z3 roadster ,and I was very disappointed,under steering because heavy engine at front.
I sold it and bought and NB Mx5, I cant regret. 1400kg for a roadster is too much ,and he behaved like a BMW 3series ......

Truly amazing production value for such a small channel. However, when something is great - you want it to be even better - I would appreciate more connection to the time period. Otherwise it's pretty unclear which years all this takes place - it's clear that the car is based on E36 somewhat and probably beginnings of the E46 - but precise dates as to when design decisions were taken/implemented - would add even more. Otherwise all good - clear explanation, amazing well thought-out graphics and obvious great deal of effort. Kuddos for the video, greetings from Latvia.
